Weinstein Confirms Sequels, Remakes, and Neve
Harvey and Bob Weinstein aren’t messing around when it comes to their horror and genre division, Dimension. In fact, according to Variety, Bob is “going back to do what he does best.” That would be nonstop moviemaking and damn the detractors.
For starters, he announced ‘Scream 4’ will begin production in mid-2010, probably April or May. The new film will be the start of a new trilogy of films, Wes Craven is in talks to return to the director’s chair, and Neve Campbell is confirmed to be coming back to reprise her role of Sidney Prescott. David Arquette and Courtney Cox Arquette are already on board to reprise their respective roles.
Robert Rodriguez is working on a screenplay for ‘Spy Kids 4,’ which, to no one’s surprise, will be shot in 3D. Production on this installment of the franchise is looking to begin in March with Disney on board as a partner.
While we’re on the subject of 3D, Weinstein confirmed ‘Halloween III’ will be a 3D film, and it is looking at a release next October. Perhaps Bob got too fed up with hearing people say he couldn’t release against ‘Saw.’ Hopefully, that is exactly what he does with this new entry into the ‘Halloween’ franchise. ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ helmer Patrick Lussier is already attached to direct.
Last and probably least is the announcement that Dimension is remaking ‘The Children of the Corn.’ Also on deck are 3D sequels to ‘Hellraiser’ and ‘Scanners,’ and remakes of ‘Short Circuit’ and ‘An American Werewolf in London.’ In a nutshell, Bob Weinstein ain’t jacking around any more.
I’m heading back to my franchise films. These films are our strength, and we are committed to doing them in style.
Next up for Dimension is the November 25th release of ‘The Road’ and the January 15th release of ‘Youth in Revolt.’ Their ‘Piranha 3-D’ is currently slated for release on April 16th.
