ANIMAL FACTORY starring Willem Dafoe will be available on Blu-ray November 28th From Arrow Video

Troubled youth Ron Decker (Edward Furlong, American History X) is sentenced to a ten-year stint in the notorious San Quentin State Prison for a drug-dealing conviction. Inexperienced in the ways of prison life, he’s taken under the wing of Earl Copen (Willem Dafoe, To Live and Die in LA), an experienced con with the entire prison in the palm of his hand – inmates and guards alike. But as Ron grows increasingly cocky in his privileged role as Earl’s confidant, is he in danger of biting off more than he can chew with some of the jail’s more volatile inhabitants?

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Eddie Bunker (Reservoir Dogs), Animal Factory was Steve Buscemi (Lonesome JimInterview)’s second stint in the director’s chair and sees him marshaling a formidable ensemble cast, including Bunker, Danny Trejo (Machete) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system and the deals they cut with each other, and themselves, in order to survive.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT – Review

While THE FLORIDA PROJECT has all the bright lush colors of Disney World, this tale is far from the magical world we associate with Disney. Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) might be living in her own happy little world, but her impoverished life is less than ideal. Moonee’s mother barely scrapes by trying to make a buck any way she can, while her daughter runs about in abandoned buildings and scavenging food with her friends. With all that being said, Moonee is still happy living carefree with the other kids who live in the rundown apartment complex, The Magic Castle, that sits just a few miles from Disney World.

Like he did with his previous film, TANGERINE, director Sean Baker once again gives voice to a part of society that is not often depicted on film. Baker has a way of showing these characters without judgment. Their lives and way of life feel so authentic that it feels like you’re watching a documentary. If it weren’t for the inclusion of Willem Dafoe as the manager of The Magic Castle – delivering one of the best performances in his career – you might think that the entire cast is made up of non-professional actors who live like this in real life.

If you didn’t know that Baker had a full script and gave directions to the kids, you would think that the child actors were improvising. There’s a real sense of danger as we watch them explore abandoned buildings and walk alone down busy streets. Young Brooklynn Prince is captivating as the leader of the pack. There’s a reckless confidence that she naturally portrays – an aspect of the character that she clearly got handed down to her from her mother.

Moonee’s mother is every inch the wild child. Covered in tattoos, dressed in clothes that barely cover her thin frame, and frequently smoking a blunt, she represents an older version of her daughter. One might see her as reckless, but on the other hand, she’s enjoying life with what little she can afford. She doesn’t have the money to buy fancy clothes or take her daughter to Disney World, but she can afford to let her daughter play with her friends while she smokes up – a vacation for her that’s affordable and attainable.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT is not an easy film to watch. There are few moments of joy in this bleak setting. Most of all, it’s hard to watch this film without feeling frustrated. Moonee is living with a desperate mother that is often negligent. Not only that, she treats her daughter like a friend, not a daughter. Baker doesn’t judge her relationship, but it’s hard to watch without passing judgment yourself. She’s a character that’s so frustrating because you want to tell her to be better, but since so many of us have never been in her situation, you can’t in good judgment chastise her.

Instead of focusing on the dirty hair and hand-me-down clothes, cinematographer Alexis Zabe lovingly presents these poor lives in a beautiful way. The purple and pink hotel buildings and clear Florida skies provide light to what could have easily been shown in a more dreary way. THE FLORIDA PROJECT is definitely not a very hopeful film as Baker hints at a cyclical world that is often hard to escape. The dream of a happily ever after isn’t always attainable. But as the film suggests throughout (and clumsily hammered home in the finale), that doesn’t mean we can’t have those brief moments where we can escape to our self-constructed fantasy worlds.

Overall score: 3.5 out of 5

DEATH NOTE – Review

Review by Stephen Tronicek

There’s one disclaimer that needs to be laid out before this review of Adam Wingard’s zestless, boring and very bad Death Note: There is no reason for Death Note to be adapted with a whitewashed cast. There will be writings on the one strength of the movie coming from said cast and the involvement of this cast in the film. That does not mean in anyway that it’s a smart decision to have done this or that it is right, just that the fact that this happened does offer one interesting thing.

The simple premise of Death Note is as follows. Light, a young student, comes into possession of a notebook that can cause the death of anybody whose name is written in it. Light gains a friend in Ryuk, a demon who carries out the rules of the Death Note (the notebook). As authorities start to pinpoint the multiple killings Light has performed as a serial act, an investigator named L starts to slowly uncover the identity of Light.

The difference between the Japanese anime that this film is based on and the film itself is that  out of necessity, the film has kneecapped it’s ability to tell a compelling story.  That necessity is formed by two conditions: 1. The length of the film being under one-hundred minutes and 2. The transferring of the story into an American setting. The first condition’s effect is obvious. At one-hundred minutes the film has to tell a more contained, but still compelling, story while still covering the basic beats forming the premise of Death Note, leaving the film without the breathing room that an episodic show provides. The second condition is less defined, in fact the one thing that the filmmakers succeed at is created by that condition, but as an element of tone and artistic influence, Death Note is decidedly Japanese and transferring the story into an American setting doesn’t allow the influences of pop culture and the stylistic flourishes, that inform quite a bit of the greatness of the original anime, to be present.

That being said, the one thing that the filmmakers did succeed at is making the film feel quite different within its setting. Most remakes or adaptations as of recent don’t bother adapting the story to the prospective culture, something that ultimately making the remake,  the same movie without the soul that the original might have had. There’s inconsistency because what may be common in one culture is not in another. Death Note doesn’t make that mistake. It feels decidedly American, with much of the new plot hinging on Light engaging in a John Hughes inspired romance that feels pretty alien from the original’s tone. Not that this makes the movie any better. In fact, this change just about ruins the identity of the main character by turning him into a boring white guy that lack almost any of the agency that the original character did. That agency instead falls to the demon Ryuk, which is a problem because Ryuk is in this movie for like two minutes. Ryuk is voiced by Willem Dafoe and any noticeable lack of Willem Dafoe is just awful, but the character basically drives Light’s original choice to use the Death Note in this version, and then the other characters just do it for him too. Seriously, there’s only a few choices that Light gets to make that define his character and most of them don’t land very well or are invalidated by the film itself. This just isn’t a good character piece or horror action film.

The direction of the film is especially flat, and that’s quite disappointing for director Adam Wingard. Wingard has always had a little too much concern for style, but his efforts like You’re Next and The Guest tend to work (Seriously, go watch The Guest). Death Note, however, makes one think some of the choices that were motivated in those films were just stylistic flourish, reflexively ruining what may be some of the best moments of Wingard’s career. It’s like the motivated style is just put up on screen for no reason. A plastering up of a lifeless mimic of genre filmmaking.

Netflix’s Death Note is a disappointment both filmically and to fans of the series. It is at once not creative enough and too creative for its own good. The original show was great as it was and this is not the original show. Unfortunately, it’s not any better.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT Trailer Is Here; From TANGERINE Director Sean Baker

THE FLORIDA PROJECT screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2017. The reviews were very positive for director Sean Baker’s new film.

“a hysterically rude, visually stunning cinematic theme park” – Telegraph

“Baker captures their possibly imaginary flight together to a magical destination via a brief burst of guerilla-style filming. And that stylistic switch is as much a part of the director’s content-dictated aesthetic as the limpid compositions and singing colors that infuse this movie about low-rent lives with such visual richness.” – THR

“He imports marginalized circumstances into breezy, entertaining formulas where you’d least expect them. “The Florida Project” lacks the narrative clarity of his earlier movies, but as it takes time developing a self-contained world, it also contains far more complex textures.” – IndieWire

Starring Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Prince, Valeria Cotto and Bria Vinaite, check out the first trailer for A24 Films THE FLORIDA PROJECT.

Warm, winning, and gloriously alive, Sean Baker’s THE FLORIDA PROJECT is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood.

Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince in a stunning breakout turn) and her rebellious mother Halley (Bria Vinaite, another major discovery) over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget motel managed by Bobby (a career-best Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion.

Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious and ebullient Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmates—including Jancey, a new arrival to the area who quickly becomes Moonee’s best friend—fearlessly explore the utterly unique world into which they’ve been thrown. Unbeknownst to Moonee, however, her delicate fantasy is supported by the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT opens on October 6, 2017.

Willem Dafoe To Star In Vincent Van Gogh Biopic AT ETERNITY’S GATE

“When facing a flat landscape I see nothing but eternity. Am I the only one to see it?” “Existence can’t be without reason.” – Vincent Van Gogh, 1888

Rocket Science announced today that Golden Globe Winner Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Before Night Falls) will direct AT ETERNITY’S GATE, which will star Academy Award Nominee Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, John Wick) as Vincent van Gogh.

Based on a screenplay by Schnabel and Jean-Claude Carrière, the story focuses on the time in Vincent’s life that he spent in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

Academy Award Nominee Jon Kilik (The Hunger Games franchise, Babel) will produce the film, which will be shot on location in France. Rocket Science is handling international sales and CAA is representing the U.S rights.

“This is a film about painting and a painter and their relationship to infinity. It is told by a painter. It contains what I felt were essential moments in his life, this is not the official history – it’s my version. One that I hope could make you closer to him,” said director Julian Schnabel.

Producer Jon Kilik said: “After over 20 years of working together, I am excited to continue my collaboration with Julian. This one is going to be special!”

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In 1886, he moved to Paris where he met members of the avant-garde, including Paul Gauguin. At Eternity’s Gate is a film about creativity and the sacrifices Vincent made to produce the spectacular masterpieces that are instantly recognizable around the world today.

Schnabel directed Before Night Falls, which became Javier Bardem’s breakthrough Academy Award-Nominated role, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, won a Golden Globe, and for which he was named Best Director at the 2007 Cannes International Film Festival.

Dafoe stars in Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, which will make its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival. He is currently filming Aquaman and will next be seen in Justice League, both for DC Comics and Warner Bros.

Kilik has produced over 30 other features by directors such as Oliver Stone, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Bennett Miller, Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Robert De Niro, Tim Robbins and Gary Ross. He has produced all of Julian’s films including The Diving Bell and The Butterfly.
