There is something about true stories that makes them so much more interesting than fiction. THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN (1985) tells the true story about Christopher Boyce and his buddy Daulton Lee. Boyce (Tim Hutton) is a former altar boy and intellectual, trying to find an occupation that can support and entertain him. His FBI father is able to pull some strings and get his idealist son a job working in the defense department. Boyce has few responsibilities and seems to be complacent drinking and goofing around with his co-workers. However, as time goes on, Boyce starts to learn top secret information that causes him to doubt the morality of his government. The idealist Boyce soon sees the illegal operations that the CIA is carrying out in above all places, Australia and eventually decides that he will leak some of the top secret info he is privy to, to the KGB. Of course, Over time, Boyce and his drug-dealing buddy Lee (Sean Penn), start to sell their top secret information to the KGB. What was once idealism turns into capitalism and espionage. The strength of THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN is the incredible performances by Hutton and Penn. Although one of them starts off with the best intentions, they will both soon find themselves in an unending downward spiral. Great direction by John Schlesinger, music, everything. THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN was made over 30 years ago but deserves to be reassessed. You’ll have the opportunity Thursday March 3rd when its screens at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue Maplewood, MO 63143). The show begins at 7:00pm.

Tribeca Review: ‘Serious Moonlight’

serious-moonlight

I was looking forward to this film since Cheryl Hines told me about it at the Adrienne Shelly Foundation Gala I attended back in October. I got a chance to speak briefly with her, and she talked about this passion project that she directed from a script written by Adrienne Shelly before she was killed. The film stars Meg Ryan, as Louise, a crossed lover who goes psycho (actually Misery) and duct tapes her cheating husband, played by Timothy Hutton, to a chair in their home. She refuses to let him go until he agrees to work on their marriage rather than run off with his current girlfriend, played by Kristen Bell.

For me, the star of the film was Justin Long who plays the gardener who decides to Rob the house when he discovers Timothy Hutton duct-taped to a toilet. Yes, I know I said chair before. He is moved to the bathroom after he attempts to escape. Long offers some sympathetic words of wisdom to Hutton while still pulling off the dumb criminal act. Hutton and Ryan are good as the leads, and Kristen Bell is always fun to watch. Louise’s attempts at winning her husband back are often funny and the film has some great moments between the two. The ending is fairly predictable but it is still a pretty fun movie. One thing that is surprising is the coarse language. Aside from a few F-bombs, this could have easily been PG-13 and therefore picked up much quicker and for more money by a studio.

Overall, Cheryl Hines did a pretty good job directing her first feature. The cast is fun to watch and the film is entertaining. It could be a good date night film, especially for older couples.

Review: ‘Lymelife’

Melissa:

The Culkins have proven that they are an acting family once again!   With two whole Culkins starring in the new release Lymelife,   they prove that more than the Baldwin brothers can dominate the acting scene.

The story follows Scott (Rory Culkin), a 15 year old boy in love with his best friend Adrianna (Emma Roberts). Scott’s parents Mickey and Brenda (Alec Baldwin and Jill Hennessey) are in a loveless, dysfunctional marriage. Meanwhile Adrianna’s father (Timothy Hutton) has gone mad with Lyme disease and her mother (Cynthia Nixon) is having an affair with Scott’s father. Scott and Adrianna are forced to cope with their surrounding worlds while being drawn to each other.

The thing that I liked most about this movie is how realistic it was. No one was really made out to be the bad guy, they just all dealt with the cards that life handed them. It was awkward and rough, but real.

Rory Culkin shows some impressive acting chops as the awkward teen who doesn’t really fit in. He’s picked on, ridiculed and in love with a girl completely out of his league. This movie played well to my heartstrings since I was one of those kids that people threw paper wads at in high school. I think it’s safe to say that most of us weren’t the coolest of kids, so the underdog approach is always a good route to take. Mix that in with a dysfunctional home life and you are playing to most of society! Rory Culkin has an awkward charm about him that makes him a great lead character! I wanted to jump into the screen and make him my BFF (Best Friend Forever)! Either that or at least give him a hug!

Emma Roberts was fantastic as a young girl trying to find her own sexuality while her mother slept around. Meanwhile, Rory Culkin did a fantastic job as the kid trying to rise above feeling weak, and learning how to stand up for himself. It really is a coming of age story, and I was wildly impressed by it!

The story addresses some hard hitting issues, such as adultery and divorce. Mix that in with being the kid that everyone picks on in school, and you have a fantastic story!

‘Lymelife’ opens today in Saint Louis at the Plaza Frontenac Cinema.

[Overall: 4 out of 5 stars]

Timothy Hutton sees Polanski’s ‘Ghost’

timothyhutton

Timothy Hutton has been cast to play an American lawyer in director Roman Polanski’s new film ‘The Ghost’ based on the book by Robert Harris. Hutton will star along side Tom Wilkinson, Jim Belushi, Kim Catrall, Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan. Wowsers! That’s one helluva cast!

The film, which begins shooting this week in Berlin, tells the tale of a ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) who is hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan). When he uncovers secrets, his own life is put in jeopardy. — HR
