The Strange Brew Film Series Has Moved! MALLRATS Wednesday Night at Urban Chestnut

“Hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorn for Sega.”

Webster University’s Award-Winning Strange Brew Film Series has moved! The new location is Urban Chestnut in the Grove (4465 Manchester Avenue, St. Louis 63110). The kickoff film for the new locale is Kevin Smith’s 1995 comedy MALLRATS. It’s this Wednesday, June 6th. The movie starts at 8pm and admission is $5.

Shift the central idea of Clerks from a convenience store to a shopping mall. Trade a pair of slacker salesmen for two newly dumped layabouts. Bring in Jay and Silent Bob for some new hijinks. Add an ill-conceived game show, a puffed-up security chief and a topless prognosticator of fortunes, and you have MALLRATS (1995).

MALLRATS was widely panned upon its initial release, but the years have been good to the film and it has developed into the type of cult classic perfect for Strange Brew.

Smith demonstrated once again his mastery of sharp-witted dialogue and his ability to draw fully realized characters you’d love to meet despite — or perhaps because of — their many flaws. The best of the lot is Jason Lee, a Smith movie staple, as Brodie. He’s obsessed with comic books and Sega games, and his fixations cost him his long-suffering girlfriend Rene (Shannen Doherty). Brodie’s best friend is T.S. (Jeremy London), who also loses his girlfriend Brandi (Claire Forlani) after another in a long stream of arguments. The quartet of dumpers and dumpees all end up at the mall, where paths inevitably cross. They also interact with various friends and foes: the supportive gal pal Gwen (Joey Lauren Adams), the sexually precocious Tricia (Renee Humphrey), the shark-like suitor Shannon (Ben Affleck) and, of course, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith). For a comic book fan, MALLRATS is an awfully funny experience. Did I mention the Stan Lee cameo!?! Don’t miss it Wednesday night at Urban Chestnut!

A Facebook invite for the screening can be found HERE
The movie starts at 8pm and admission is $5. There will be food to order and plenty of pints of Urban Chestnut’s famous home-brewed beer.

THE SECRET OF NIMH – The Blu Review

Get ready to meet some runaway rodents with an earth-shattering secret! Suspenseful and heartwarming, this beautifully animated odyssey stars Mrs. Brisby, a mild-mannered mother mouse with a plan to move Heaven and Earth (or at least her house and home) to save her family from Farmer Fitzgibbon’s plow! Along the way she gets some help from a lovelorn Crow, a busybody neighbor mouse and a fearsome Great Owl. Unfortunately, Mrs. Brisby will need an engineering miracle to hoist her home, and for that she must face a mysterious rat, fend off a ferocious cat and claim a magic amulet! But when Mrs. Brisby discovers the astounding secret of NIMH…it could change her life forever! This timeless tale of love, courage and determination will transport the whole family into an enchanting world where the bravest hearts live in the meekest of mice.

This is a must see for any animation fan. Not from the Disney machine, this film proves that good animated films can be done without being backed by the “house of mouse”. The voices of Derek Jacobi, Elizabeth Hartman, Arthur Malet and Don DeLuise certainly helped to make this story the imaginative, fun filled ride that it is! This is a timeless tale that generations to come will enjoy!

The only thing that is not timeless is the video quality. The film just does not transfer over to our 1080p world very well (1080p/AVC-encoded transfer). The English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 was pretty impressive though, if I do say so myself.

  • Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1
  • Video Codec: AVC/MPEG-4
  • Resolution: 1080p/24
  • Audio Codec: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, French Dolby 2.0 Mono, German Dolby 2.0 Mono, Italian Dolby 2.0 Mono, Portuguese Dolby 2.0 Mono, Spanish (Castilian) Dolby 2.0 Mono, Spanish (Latin American) Dolby 2.0 Stereo
  • Subtitles: English SDH, French, Spanish (Latin American)
  • Region: A (B? C?)
  • Rating: G
  • Discs: 1
  • Studio: MGM
EXTRAS
  • Audio Commentary: Gary Goldman and Don Bluth discuss the film, although this is not new. This was the commentary recorded for the DVD release in 2007, which is still both relevant and fun! My art loving self especially enjoyed listening to the two of them talk about how they approach animation and budgeting. If you are a fan of animation then you are going to enjoy this!
  • Secrets Behind the Secret (14 min) Goldman and Bluth are back to take you on the journey from book to screen. Again, if you are into animation you will like this. This is in SD.
  • Trailer (2 min) I love watching trailers for older movies, so this was neat,

Andy Fickman developing ‘Heathers’ Musical

heathersmusical

Remember ‘Heathers’…? Of course you do! The 1988 dark comedy about teens is a popular cult favorite and launched the careers of Wynona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty. Well, are you ready for Heathers: The Musical? No, I didn’t stutter. It’s true, but it gets even worse. Andy Fickman, you know… the auteur director responsible for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s masterpiece Disney films including ‘The Game Plan’ and ‘Race to Witch Mountain’… yeah, so he’s developing a musical stage adaptation of ‘Heathers’. Yipee!

The trio has worked on the production under the radar for some time, even doing readings this week in Endeavor’s screening room. The readings saw “Veronica Mars” star Kristen Bell playing the lead and Christian Campbell as J.D., with Jenna Leigh Green (“Wicked”), BrokeDown Cadillac lead singer Corri English and Christine Lakin (the CW’s “Valentine”) as the three Heathers. — HR

Fickman isn’t entirely foreign to the musical genre, having directed ‘Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical’ in 2005 with partner Kevin Murphy, with whom he is working with on ‘Heathers’. Fickman claims the original movie offers many “over the top” moments that would give the musical a similar appeal to John Waters’ ‘Hairspray’. Unfortunately, Fickman failed to consider one crucial element… Waters knows how to make an entertaining movie!
