“Riviere-Perdue” Season 1 – TV series review

The six-episode police procedural miniseries from France, “Riviere-Perdue,” covers a related series of crimes in six 52-minute episodes. Its tone is more somber than most of the European TV fare I’ve reviewed – almost Nordic in tenor. But the setting is a village nestled in lush mountain greenery that makes it a visual treat, including all the standard driving transition scenes with overhead shots well above average on the beauty scale.

The star is Captain Alix Berg (Barbara Cabrita) who specializes in juvenile cases. She and an older homicide colleague, Commissaire Balthus (Jean-Michel Tinivelli), come to the eponymous town because two 11-year-old girls, Anna (Charlotte Lacoste) and Lucie (Camille Petit), went missing five years earlier, but staunch public pressure to find them endures. Their parents aren’t wealthy, and no ransoms were demanded, making some sort of perversion or trafficking most likely.

Ferrer (Nicolas Gob), the local lead cop, is still kicking himself for not realizing there had been a crime from the get-go, possibly making the recovery harder than it became. There’s a lot of anger and suspicion among the two families and others who may have been involved. The whole town is up in arms about the lack of resolution. The upside for viewers is that quite a few cast members get to display a wide range of their dramatic chops.

Some new evidence leads to the suspicion that an abduction from seven years before this one might have been done by the same perp or perps. Anna is rescued by a trucker in the early going but says little about her five years in captivity, including how much of the time she was with Lucie. Some of that may be due to emotional trauma and a head injury, but she also seems more secretive that she should be – especially since Lucie’s whereabouts remain unknown. Most of the running time centers around the search for Lucie, as the three detectives ricochet among a number of suspects, pursuing each clue that pops up regarding the old and new cases.

MHz Choice subscribers may recognize Gob from the light mystery series “The Art of Crime,” and Bruno Debrandt from the episodic procedural drama “The Traveller.” I’ve enjoyed both series, as my reviews of them reflect. This one is more serious and mystifying than those others. That’s partly due to the nature of the crimes running through the season, and all the dicey reactions and shifting relations among the principals that ebb and flow at a high and often extreme rate. As usual, there’s no nudity and relatively little on-screen violence. Beyond that, the less you know of the details, the more you’ll savor the suspense and its handful of plot twists.

“Riviere-Perdue” Season 1, mostly in French with English subtitles, is available via on MHz Choice starting Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025.

“Something Undone” Season One – TV Series Review

Michael Musi as Farid and Madison Walsh as Jo, in the Canadian crime drama TV series “Something Undone.” Courtesy of MHz Choice.

The crime drama from Canadian TV, “Something Undone” starts with an unusual premise. Farid and Jo (Michael Musi, Madison Walsh, who were also co-writers of the series), a pair of true-crime pod-casters come across a 30-year-old sensational murder in a small Newfoundland town in the house of a family of five, with Satanic-type symbols scrawled on its walls.

The case was closed on the decision that the father killed his wife, kids and self. But Farid and Jo suspect that’s not the whole story. Farid goes to the town and is met with hostility (and more) at every turn. Few are willing to answer his questions. The police chief takes a “nothing to see here” approach, claiming the old file can’t even be found.

Meanwhile, Jo is obsessing over her own personal history and issues. She’s on medications for mental health problems including alcohol abuse, and digs deeply into the suicides of her mother and granny for answers to her own fragile psychological state. She and Farid are at odds over the value of her treatment and the dangers of her drinking, further complicating both of their efforts. The action alternates between the two, linked by their erratic attempts at communication.

Farid concludes the heinous crime had been whitewashed, unfairly pinning the blame on the father. He learns there were similar killings in the area around the same time that were never solved. The town depended heavily on tourism, and didn’t want visitors to be deterred by any perceived dangers. Dredging up the old story is seen as a new threat to that part of its economic base by most of the locals. An unseen hand appears to be keeping a lid on the facts, and punishing anyone who provides information to the journalist.

The story stays suspenseful throughout its 10 hour-long episodes, but empathy for the protagonists is hard to maintain. As Farid and Jo clash and fail to support each other’s burdens, they grow more annoying than sympathetic. One saving grace is the excellent performance by Billy Campbell as a local religious do-gooder with a questionable past.

Those of us who crave closure should consider this caveat. The series aired in 2023. Though there aren’t big cliffhangers, it leaves dangling plot points most would want resolved. As of this writing, it’s unknown if a second season or follow-up tele-film are in the works. I hope either will come to pass.

“Something Undone” Season One begins streaming MHz Choice on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

“Chantal” – TV Series Review

A scene from the Dutch TV series “Chantal.” Courtesy of MHz Choice

We’ll start the review of “Chantal: Season One” with a “consumer caution:” if you’re looking for an extension of the 2007 soft-core porn flick with the same title, this ain’t nowhere close to the same ballpark, so cool the jets of your libido before starting.

Regular readers know I’ve reviewed a lot of European crime series here, including many that were comedic in tone. This dramedy offers a couple of unique aspects: it’s our first from Belgium, and it’s more droll than other light faves like “Capitaine Marleau” or “Captain Sharif”. The familiar part is that the eponymous police detective (Maaike Cafmeyer) comes to a small town to head its unit. She moves there with her daughter (Anna-Marie Missoul) seeking a less taxing turf than before, so she’ll have more time to study for the Commander exam. This is meant to be only a short-term gig before moving to Brussels for the higher-level training if she passes, and a meatier position thereafter.

The little town of Loveringem, located in the western part of Flanders, isn’t quite ready for a female cop. Even though Chantal is middle-aged, everyone she meets assumes this newcomer must be an underling. She’s also resented by Rik “the Sheriff” Cloedt (Dries Heyneman) who assumed he’d become top banana, only to be outranked by the first distaff colleague they’d seen. Besides the sexism, Chantal has to circumvent smug cops from higher-ranking agencies who diss her little band of locals and try to shunt them off to menial tasks… or less.

Part of the droll humor comes from the prevailing cowboy motif of the community, despite its apparent dearth of cattle. Most of the guys dress like extras in an oater. They typically drink beer from the bottle, rather than wine. The homey main bar/social hub (Café Misery) looks like a roadhouse teleported from the southern US, complete with country music and line dancing. Everything but a mechanical bull in the décor.

Season One consists of eight hour-long episodes, opening and closing with two-parters, surrounding six stand-alone murders to solve. As usual for Euro-fare, there’s not much action or visible gore throughout. The scripts are written well enough so that even the more obvious mysteries are entertaining to watch. The cast is completely non-glamorous, making all the characters as relatable as they come, with a mix of bad eggs, good folk and oddballs. A bunch of players get fleshed out with story arcs, making the series grow cozier for viewers as they continue.

No cliffhangers. Season Two has already aired abroad, and most who start here should be eager for Chantal’s further adventures to join this charming intro to our side of the Atlantic.

“Chantel” Season One, mostly in Dutch with English subtitles, begins streaming on MHz Choice starting Tuesday, Feb. 25.

“Cassandre” Season 1 – TV Series Review

Gwendoline Hamon as Cassandre, in the French TV crime drama “Cassandre” Season One. Courtesy of MHz Choice

The premise of the French TV crime drama, “Cassandre,” is nothing new to fans of the genre. A police detective from Paris moves to a much smaller city due to some sort of scandal/personal problem that made him/her want/need a change of scenery badly enough to take a big step down the career ladder. But based on the two episodes comprising first half of its debut season that were available for review, the scripts and casting still make this one a fine entry into your realm of viewing options. I must not be the only one thinking that way. After starting in 2015, it’s now up to 30 episodes (and still counting), with the same principal cast.

Gwendoline Hamon stars in the title role as an ambitious, successful detective who asks for transfer to the city where, as we soon learn, the juvenile detention school her surly teenage son Jules (Luca Malinowski) was sentenced to is located. She’s resented by her new colleagues not only for being an outsider, but for replacing the beloved old boss, who just happened to be the husband of the prosecutor (Beatrice Agenin) and the father of #2 detective Pascal (Alexandre Varga), who everyone assumed would take up his father’s position. For another source of friction within the unit, Nicky (Jessy Salomee Ugolin) is secretly boinking Pascal and worries that this rather attractive new arrival will provide competition for his affections.

The first case offers no respite, as the body of a hang glider soon shows itself to be the result of murder, not mishap. She was the wife of a man who is part of a rich and influential family. They resist any investigation that could reflect poorly on them or their businesses. Even worse, Cassandre’s inquiries turn up some old skeletons that are even more upsetting to many of the principals.

The second case is about the murder of a popular teacher at Jules’ school. Once again, the pressure is on because many locals were already fearful of the bad kids being housed in their town, and would love finding a scandal to justify closing it. If you don’t know what NIMBY means, Google it, since it’s an attitude that exists just about everywhere.

The cast is excellent. As usual for Euro fare, they are mostly attractive, but well shy of glamorous, to keep them in a relatively relatable dimension. There’s also less action and bloodshed than one typically finds in comparable US crime dramas. One bonus is the fourth member of the squad, Dominique Pinon, whose distinctive face you will recognize even if you don’t know his name. The veteran actor has played a wide array of supporting characters in comedies and dramas on both sides of the Atlantic, and always delivers the goods. With about 200 movie and TV credits under his belt, it’s gratifying to see him landing a steady gig.

There’s a lot of melodrama in the mix, especially surrounding Cassandre, her bitter son and bitterer (I don’t care if that’s not a real word. I like the way it scans here) ex. That’s usually a turn-off for me, but it’s all so well written and integrated by series creators Bruno Lecigne and Matthieu Masmondet that they set the table for a long and satisfying run.

“Cassandre” Season One, in French with English subtitles, streams on MHz Choice starting Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Friday DVD Giveaway: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Season 1

sonsofanarchydvd

After the rebirth of badass biker films with ‘Hell Ride’, FX announced ‘Sons of Anarchy’ which is a show based on…you guessed it, badass bikers!

We got a couple copies of season 1 on DVD and we want you guys to experience this show. Although it is on FX it still spares very little. Check out this synopsis:

The Sons of Anarchy is an outlaw motorcycle club with many charters in the United States. The Charming local is the original founding charter of the Sons of Anarchy.

The Charming charter is based out of a clubhouse adjacent to the Teller-Morrow auto mechanic shop. Led by Clay Morrow, the club protects and controls Charming through close community relationships, bribery and violent intimidation. The full name of the motorcycle club is Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original; on occasion, the show will abbreviate it as SOA, though more frequently the club is referred to as SAMCRO (a rough acronym of The Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original) or Sam Crow. This nickname is also reflected in the original title of the show, Forever Sam Crow.[6] The club’s leathers also refer to “Men of Mayhem,” Jax has worn a hat that says “Reaper Crew,” and their logo is a grim reaper wielding an M-16 with scythe blade and holding a crystal ball. Another symbol of the club is the crow. (At least two female characters affiliated with the club have crow tattoos.) As for the motorcycles, the Sons mostly ride customized Harley-Davidson Dyna’s.

Club members have “day jobs” in local industries, most of them working at Clay’s auto repair shop, but they primarily make money by importing illegal weapons and selling them to drug gangs in the East Bay, along with protection runs for local businesses by protecting valuable truck shipments from hijacking.

So what you need to do in order to win a copy for yourself is tell us your favorite biker movie, or favorite moment from the show and why. We will then pick the winners at random and notify you via email.

If you aren’t one of the lucky winners, you can still pick up a copy. It hit shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray on August 18th!

DVD Review: ‘Eastbound & Down’ Season One

eastboundanddownreview

When I tell you that ‘Eastbound & Down’ is the greatest show on television you will argue with me, but your argument will be worthless because Danny McBride will have already kicked your ass. When you combine Jody Hill and Danny McBride then you are guaranteed comic gold platinum diamonds, actually they don’t have a word to describe how amazing those two guys are together.

eastboundlogoboobs

McBride plays Kenny Powers, an over the top former MLB pitcher who after washing out of the majors is forced to move in with his brother who still lives in their hometown of Shelby North Carolina. Out of work, and out of money he has to resort to substitute teaching the PE class and try to figure out a way back to the top.

His former high school sweetheart April is teaching art at the school and is currently engaged to the douchebag principal. Kenny vows to win her heart back which doesn’t take much since she still seems to have the hots for his ridiculous and crude behavior.

April is played by the absolutely amazing Katy Mixon who had me drooling all over myself all season and left me breathless in the last episode, that is of course until I got a piece of information from CineVegas, but we wont go there.

Jody Hill brings super crude humor to an entirely new level and its a place that I wish more directors/writers would take things. No one compares to this guy, and he doesn’t even have a comedy background! If you loved ‘Observe and Report’ or ‘Foot Fist Way’ then there is absolutely no reason why you haven’t seen this show. Do yourself a favor and buy this today, or else I cant be your friend anymore.

The special features offer up some outtakes, commentary tracks on 3 episodes, and a really awesome making of featurette.
