TRUST ME is directed by and stars Clark Gregg (Marvel’s THE AVENGERS, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and Joss Whedon’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING).

Felicity Huffman, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet, and Allison Janney co-star in the dark comedy about a struggling Hollywood agent for child actors.

Clark Gregg’s TRUST ME will be released On Demand iTunes May 6th and in select theaters June 6th. Pre-order it HERE.

It’s definitely one of the must-see movies of the summer and utterly charming.

TRUST ME tells the sharp, comic story of Howard Holloway (Gregg), a down-on-his luck agent for child actors and truly one the last good guys left in Hollywood.

After discovering a 13-year-old acting prodigy (Saxon Sharbino), he is poised to close the deal of a lifetime which would catapult his tween client and, at long last, himself, into the big time. With the support of his gorgeous new neighbor (Peet), he must wrangle the actress’ volatile, overprotective father, dodge a scheming producer (Huffman), and outwit his uber-slick nemesis (Rockwell). As he arrives on the brink of the Hollywood dream that’s eluded him for a lifetime, he begins to sense that his innocent young starlet may not be quite what she seems.

This is the second feature film written and directed by Gregg, who made his directing debut with CHOKE, an adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel that starred Sam Rockwell.

Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell star in the brand new trailer for BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY.

A small town pharmacist’s uneventful life is turned inside out when a chance encounter with a lonely trophy wife turns into a walk on the wild side in the murderously funny dark comedy.

Doug Varney (Sam Rockwell) is the model of suburban respectability—until the night he delivers a prescription to the home of Elizabeth Roberts (Olivia Wilde). Gorgeous, seductive and multiply addicted, Elizabeth eagerly introduces Doug to extra-large martinis, uninhibited bedroom behavior and the illicit pleasures of the pharmacopoeia he has access to in his store.

Disregarded for years by everyone from his domineering wife Kara (Michelle Monaghan) and troubled son Ethan (Harrison Holzer), to the goldbricking employees at the drugstore he bought from his insufferable father-in-law (Ken Howard), Doug surprises himself by embarking on an exhilarating drug-and-alcohol fueled affair with the most glamorous woman he has ever met.

But his extracurricular activities quickly send his life spinning out of control when a routine DEA audit reveals serious discrepancies in his inventory. Convinced he’s about to lose everything, Doug hatches an ill-considered scheme with Elizabeth that will allow to them to have it all—at an almost unthinkable price. Also starring Norbert Leo Butz, Ray Liotta and Jane Fonda.

From Samuel Goldwyn Films, BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY hits theaters and VOD March 14.

TFF 2013: TRUST ME Q & A WITH CLARK GREGG

TFF Trust Me

On my last full day at the Tribeca Film Festival, I attended a public screening of Clark Gregg’s TRUST ME. Most probably know him as Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and to be honest that is mostly how I knew him as well. For some reason, I had no idea that he was the writer & director of CHOKE, which is a flick I thoroughly enjoyed and will probably revisit soon. I even have a promotional CHOKE anal beads bookmark that was handed out at NY Comic Con of all places. Following the film’s screening (only the 2nd ever) Clark Gregg was on hand for a short Q & A with the audience. I managed to film the entire thing and now have posted it for your viewing pleasure. The video may contain spoilers; however, in my opinion the few quick references probably won’t make any sense until after you see the film anyway. Enjoy!

TFF 2013 DAILY RECAP: Monday April 22nd

Tribeca Coverage Logo

I had to skip the press lounge and head straight to the Clearview Cinemas for the 10 am screening of WHITEWASH. What unfolded was a film far stranger than what the Tribeca Film Guide’s summary suggests. This “dark comedy” opens with an all too serious tone but slowly becomes a much more comedic effort. The timeline skips around as well and the audience is left wondering at first what is even real. Thomas Haden Church delivers a truly fantastic performance as a man delving into insanity and facing immense guilt for his crime but the overall film left me a bit unsatisfied.

TFF Whitewash

I had less than 30 seconds to get to the next theater to catch Justin Long’s writing debut, A CASE OF YOU. The film is a fairly predictable rom-com that follows the age-old formula precisely. That isn’t exactly a bad thing though since the film is both fun and funny, with a slew of fantastic performances by Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood and a series of surprising cameos.  I’m just not quite sure what a film like this is doing at TFF since it doesn’t fit the typical description of what you normally would find at a festival, even one like Tribeca. I’m not complaining though since I thoroughly enjoyed this film which quote-happy critics will surely call a hilarious and charming rom-com for the Facebook generation.

TFF A Case Of You

With a little bit of time before my next screening, I made my way to the Filmmaker Lounge for the first time during the festival. It was in a different location than last year, unlike the press lounge, and I was far more impressed with the new digs. There were also a lot more postcards and promotion material amongst the tables in the lounge. Perhaps the nicest surprise of all was the Magnum Ice Cream freezer that actually had ice cream left in it. After a delicious Gold bar, I grabbed some lunch nearby and made my way back to Clearview for my final screening of the day.

TFF Filmmaker Lounge

Clark Gregg’s TRUST ME is a fun yet increasingly dark look at Hollywood from the perspective of child agent Howard Holloway (Gregg). The film opens with a shot of the protagonist dying but the film still manages to take you on quite a surprising ride right up until it ends. Besides, in the world of Hollywood, especially the one portrayed in this film, you never really know who or what to trust.  Following the film Clark Gregg came out for a fun and informative Q & A, which I recorded and will be posting shortly. After, he stuck around for another 10 minutes to meet with fans. I had the pleasure of talking with him for a bit and must say that he is one of the most personable guys I have ever met. You can tell he truly appreciates and respects his fans, which is sometimes hard to find at events like this. This turned out to be the last screening I attended as press for the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and it was definitely a highlight to go out on.

THE WAY, WAY BACK – The Sundance Review

26FAXON1_SPAN-articleLarge

Every year, there’s one movie that becomes what I like to call the “It” faux-indie. Faux-indies are the movies that try to approximate the sensibilities of low-budget films, often with directors and writers known for independent work, but feature decidedly mainstream, well-known actors. The overall effect is very odd, as the audience is being asked to see movie stars as normal human beings. Sometimes it works. More often, it doesn’t. In many ways, Sundance has become the poster child for premiering these kinds of films.

And a new trend has emerged in recent years. It seems that there’s always one particular faux-indie that garners lots of awards show attention, usually  sweeping up a few Oscars. You know them: Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, The Kids Are All Right, The Descendants. Last year it was Silver Linings Playbook (although it’s a borderline case, as David O. Russell may officially be approaching mainstream director status). And I believe that The Way, Way Back has the strongest potential to be this year’s faux-indie champion – at least, of anything to come out of Sundance.

The film was written and directed by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, who won Oscars for writing The Descendants. The only newcomer in the cast is Liam James as main character Duncan, a shy kid who’s at a loss for things to do while on summer vacation at the beach. He’s stuck with his mom, Pam (Toni Collette) and her boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell), and not even the allure of cute neighbor girl Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb) can shake him out of his funk. He finds a groove, though, when he starts working at a local water park, under dry-witted slacker Owen (Sam Rockwell). Over the course of the summer, Duncan slowly comes out of his shell at the park, even as he remains resolutely insular around his family.

The cast is solid, and the biggest strength in the movie’s arsenal. Carell is far and away the standout. While he’s tried to work against the Michael Scott image in his other film work, he’s done so by either playing up his goofballery or his sad-sackiness. But here, he instead escalates his inner jerk, and creates a truly loathsome character in Trent, who seems like an accumulation of every terrible step dad quality one can think of. He’s not a monster, though, just a really convincing asshole, able to work over others through vile passive-aggression. He feels eerily plausible as a result.

But no one is bad here. Collette does a great job of making sense of the fact that Pam is with Trent, and portrays a sympathetic, quiet desperation to just have a good time. Rockwell is very funny, even if he’s basically the archetypical indie trickster. Allison Janney is a lot of fun too, even though she’s going way, way, WAY broad and over-the-top as the family’s booze-loving neighbor. Actors like Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet, Rob Corddry also turn in minor but nice supporting turns.

It’s a pity that everyone is trapped in such a rigidly standard faux-indie story mold. These kinds of movies are always stuck in a weird place, somewhere between trying to portray life honestly (the indie ideal) and trying to sell an easy happy ending (the Hollywood ideal). The Way, Way Back is no different. There’s more than a few things that ring true about what it’s like to be an introverted teen in an extroverted environment. James sells it well, even if he feels interchangeable with any other skinny young awkward white guy protagonist. But every beat that you’d expect comes pretty much exactly when you’d predict it. And the overall impression feels false.

The Way, Way Back is solid. It’s nice. It is far from a great film, but farther from a bad one. There’s some good performances to savor, and sturdy writing to appreciate. It’s just such so thoroughly faux-indie. Also, I don’t really know what the title means. No one, at any point, talks about traveling back to anywhere, whether literally or metaphorically. *shrug*

Review: CONVICTION

The new drama CONVICTION is based on a true story and aspires to be an inspirational tale of a scrappy underdog fighting the system similar to RUDY and ERIN BROKOVICH. And like those films, CONVICTION benefits from some great actors helping to tell this true tale.

The movie begins in 1980 at a horrific crime scene . A woman in Ayer, MA has been brutally murdered in her tiny, trailer park home. Officer Nancy Taylor (FROZEN RIVER’s Melissa Leo) picks up Kenny Waters (MOON’s Sam Rockwell) for questioning(this after a heated verbal altercation). Kenny’s sister Betty Ann (AMELIA’s Hilary Swank) and her hubby Rick (MUMFORD’s Loren Dean) pick him up from the police station after his release. A couple years pass and Kenny is picked up again and charged with the murder. After hearing damning testimonies from his former girlfriends (ZODIAK’s Clea DuVall and OLD SCHOOL’s Juliette Lewis) a jury finds Kenny guilty of the crime. Betty Ann is determined to get him freed and embarks on a 12 year journey through the legal system. Although she was raising two boys and holding down a full time bar job she enrolled in law school and never gave up on her brother.

Tony Goldwin (THE LAST KISS) directs with great style from a script by Pamela Gray (MUSIC OF THE HEART), but it’s the actors that elevated CONVICTION from Lifetime TV movieland. Took me a bit to get used to her “Baaasten” accent , but Swank really makes you cheer on this working class mother. The always interesting Rockwell makes Kenny a very compelling if not always likable character. Sure you feel for the guy, but he’s got a real anger management problem. I was surprised and delighted to see Minnie Driver in the film as Betty Ann’s law school classmate and pal. Seems like it’s been a while since we’ve seen her.Late in the film Peter Gallagher turns in an energetic performance as Barry Scheck (I hope Scheck sent a nice thank-you note to the producers). Duvall and Lewis do fine supporting work as Kenny’s exes (kudos to the make-up team for Lewis’s nasty choppers). Near the film’s end Ari Graynor (NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST) shows off her dramatic skills as Kenny’s estranged daughter, Mandy. My only problems are with the manipulative flashback scenes of Kenny and Betty Ann as youngsters who are inseparable until the authorities pull them apart. I’d like to have seen how Betty Ann stayed on the straight and narrow while Kenny became a magnet for trouble. I’m also curious as to whether the authorities were so heartless as to arrest Kenny DURING his grandfather’s funeral services. The dissolution of Betty Ann and Rick’s marriage is quickly glossed over. He forbids her from going to law school and shortly we see Betty Ann picking up her two boys from his nice, new, suburban home. But I may be nitpicking too much. All in all CONVICTION is a well dune entry in the inspirational non-fiction film genre with some top-notch acting.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

On The Set of Favreau’s COWBOYS & ALIENS

Director Jon Favreau tweeted this peek at the set of his new film COWBOYS & ALIENS, Dreamworks’ and Universal Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of Platinum Studios cross-genre comic. A source on the set told me it’s filled deep with a lot of extras and that shooting began on Thursday, June 10th in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Even one of the film’s stars, Olivia Wilde, tweeted “Its the coolest set ever.”

Favreau is directing Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde, Noah Ringer, Paul Dano, Clancy Brown, Adam Beach, and Ana De La Reguera in a film that crosses the classic Western with the alien-invasion movie in a blazingly original way. Joined by Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Damon Lindelof, Denis L. Stewart, and Dan Forcey, COWBOYS & ALIENS will be an action thriller that will take audiences into the Old West, where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror beyond our world.

The film’s synopsis:

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move onto its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). Its a town that lives in fear…But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one-by-one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents’ townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors, all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

You can follow the movie’s progress on Twitter or Facebook. From DreamworksSKG and Universal Pictures, COWBOYS & ALIENS will be in theaters next summer on July 29, 2011.
