CREED – The Review

Creed05720.dng

Yes, Creed – as in Apollo. Who knew one of the most popular and tragic characters in the Rocky mythology had a son? This is the premise in the latest installment of the Rocky franchise (technically Rocky 7, for those of you keeping count) titled CREED.

At first I thought this was just a clever way of disguising the fact that this is indeed a “Rocky movie”, because let’s face it, after the triumphant original (Rocky, 1976) not all the sequels lived up to the standard. The first few were good, but after Rocky IV (1985) – the one where he beats “the Russian” – Rocky V (1990) and Rocky Balboa (2006) just felt old and desperate. And not done very well. Even Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone, couldn’t save them. So naturally the idea of another Rocky movie couldn’t have been an easy pitch, not to mention there was a certain disappointment that everyone’s favorite underdog was going to go out that way. Until CREED.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station), CREED is the perfect vehicle to sort of wrap up the Rocky saga. And it’s not a ridiculous “comeback” premise, as Rocky is clearly now too old for any of that nonsense, and Coogler smartly sidestepped that landmine. It’s more like a throwback to the original, where an unknown neighborhood fighter gets his big chance at the title, and with a little help from a ratchety old trainer (the beloved Mickey, played by the late Burgess Meredith), he nearly wins. Only this time, the ratchety old trainer is Rocky and the fighter is Adonis Johnson – the son of none other than Rocky’s nemesis-turned-best-friend, Apollo Creed.

Turning in a stellar performance as the title character, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) is both physically and emotionally perfect in the role. He is not over the top or cocky – searching to understand where he came from and determined to make it on his own, despite following in his famous father’s footsteps.  Adonis (going by Don Johnson to hide his famous last name) finds Rocky still living sadly alone in Philadelphia, surrounded by the ghosts of his loved ones that have passed (his beloved Adrian and brother-in-law Pauly), and convinces him to train him for one big fight – a move that sends both of them down a road of redemption for the “father-son” relationship that they missed out on in their own lives. The scenes between the two are heartfelt and sweet, without being overly sappy. (Have a tissue ready for some of these scenes).

But the most joyful surprise of this film is Sylvester Stallone. His quietly subdued performance as the aging fighter and Philly’s favorite son is sublime. Stallone could have easily fallen back into a caricature of Rocky – with the punch-drunk mannerisms and slightly slurred speech. But he doesn’t. Instead, Rocky is wistful and sentimental and noticeably sad. No longer interested in the glory days, he is just passing time until he can be with Adrian again. In fact, Stallone has been getting such great nods for his performance, it’s a safe bet that he’ll be on many Oscar radars this award season, and you can pretty much bet that he will be invited to the big show – for the first time since 1977 when Rocky won best picture and Stallone was nominated for playing the iconic title character and for writing the screenplay (along with Best Picture, Rocky also took home statues for Best Editing and for Director John G. Avildsen).

Special note: the look of the film is amazing due to the great work by director of photography Maryse Alberti. Her cinematography gives the audience different perspectives in the ring from what one usually sees in the movies. Alberti used a steadicam throughout the film, particularly in the fight scenes, and the fight between Adonis and Sporino was shot in a single, two-minute take. Additionally, composer Ludwig Goransson’s thrilling score is reminiscent of Bill Conti’s iconic ROCKY theme.

Set to open Thanksgiving weekend, you can expect the box office numbers to be pretty impressive – the highest grossing Rocky movie thus far is Rocky IV (1984) and CREED is the perfect holiday fare for families, young adults and die-hard fans of the Rocky franchise.

OVERALL RATING: 5 OUT OF 5 STARS

Listen To A Sample Of The CREED Soundtrack From Composer Ludwig Goransson

Creed_Score_FeatureImageSource_2

The dramatic sound of the bell in Bill Conti’s score for ROCKY is one we all remember. The original Rocky (1976) film won the 1977 Academy Award for ‘Best Motion Picture’. Rocky composer Bill Conti, along with Carol Connors, were Oscar nominated for ‘Best Music: Original Song’ for “Gonna Fly Now.”

Check out this sample track from CREED by composer Ludwig Goransson.

One of the director Ryan Coogler’s favorite aspects of shooting CREED in the City of Brotherly Love was…the brotherly love. “I liked the vibe out there, it was very similar to Oakland, where people have a lot of pride in their sports teams, pride in where they’re from. The music culture out there is also very big, and we were able to bring that to life in the film through the character of Bianca, thanks to Tessa Thompson and our composer.”

Ludwig Goransson, who also worked with Coogler on his previous film, scored CREED and wrote several tracks for Thompson to perform in character.

“Creating an EP for a fictional buzz-worthy artist is challenging, but knowing what Ryan had in mind for the character, Tessa and I were able to go into the studio as soon as she was cast,” he says. “We wrote and recorded about eight songs and Ryan chose his favorites for the movie. It was a very special experience for both Tessa and me because we could see and hear how Bianca came together through her music.”

The composer had a unique approach to build the score, too. “I always feel encouraged by Ryan to think outside of the box and create something that I really believe in. The first thing I did was record sounds from a boxer during his training routine, with the purpose of turning those sounds into musical elements as the basis for the score,” he explains. “After experimenting with those sounds, I rearranged one of the love themes I’d written and gave it a bigger, more aggressive, orchestral sound with a few modern elements and a strong melodic theme.”

CRD207_000035.tif

Of course, the musical history of the “Rocky” films had to be addressed. “I studied Bill Conti’s score thoroughly and was inspired by the way he combined jazz and classical harmonies,” Goransson continues. “I didn’t intend to use any ‘Rocky’ music beyond just one climactic scene, but Ryan and I discussed how to score an older Rocky, and we came up with using Adrian’s love theme.”

Having spent so much of his life influenced by the ‘Rocky’ films, and determined to be a part of them, Coogler is thrilled to at long last bring this new chapter in the beloved series to the screen, and hopes that moviegoers will be as eager to see the story as he has been to tell it. “I’ve been a Rocky fan since as long as I can remember,” he says. “I know those movies like the back of my hand. I think we captured that spirit and also brought something new for fans to enjoy.”

Txtd-Final-Rated-1sht-CREED (691x1024)

WAMG has your passes to one of the most anticipated films of 2015, Ryan Coogler’s CREED.

The film reunites Coogler with his FRUITVALE STATION star Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, and explores a new chapter in the “Rocky” story, starring Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role.

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title…but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?

Ryan Coogler directed from a screenplay he wrote with Aaron Covington, based on a story by Coogler. The film is being produced by Irwin Winkler, Robert Chartoff, Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler, Kevin King-Templeton and Sylvester Stallone, with Nicolas Stern executive producing.

November 25 Is CREED Day – Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson And Director Ryan Coogler On Hand For Proclamation

CREED_Day_Museum

Standing atop the Philadelphia Art Museum’s iconic steps, Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter proclaimed Wednesday, November 25 “Creed” Day in honor of the upcoming film – opening that same day – which explores the next chapter in the “Rocky” saga.

CREED stars Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson joined Mayor Nutter on Friday to receive the official proclamation. The film’s writer/director, Ryan Coogler, and producer Irwin Winkler were also on hand.

The film, which brings Rocky Balboa face-to-face with the son of his one-time rival and best friend, Apollo Creed, was shot in and around the City of Brotherly Love. The museum steps, and the statue of Rocky that stands at the bottom of them, can, in fact, be seen in CREED.

Mayor Nutter also gifted the team from CREED with individually inscribed miniature Liberty Bells to mark the occasion; they, in turn, presented the mayor with a framed rendering of the mural, created as a special tribute to the city, that was installed Friday morning at the Front Street Gym in North Philly, a location that features prominently in the new film.

Following the presentations, former football star Vince Papale – who, much like Rocky, went from underdog to hometown hero to sports superstar when he became a walk-on Philadelphia Eagle – opened the floor for questions from the press in attendance.

From Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema comes award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s CREED. The film reunites Coogler with his “Fruitvale Station” star Michael B. CREED also stars Tessa Thompson (“Selma,” “Dear White People”); Phylicia Rashad (Lifetime’s “Steel Magnolias”); and English pro boxer and former three-time ABA Heavyweight Champion Anthony Bellew.

The film opens nationwide on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, with select international territories as well as all television distribution being handled by MGM.
