The Producers Guild of America Announces Date For 27th Annual Producers Guild Awards

pga_logo_13

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced Saturday, January 23, 2016 as the date for its 27th Annual Producers Guild Awards, which will be presented at the landmark Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles. The 2016 date marks the second consecutive year the Guild will have hosted the awards at the historic location, as the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards are already set for early next year on January 24, 2015.

Last year 12 YEARS A SLAVE and GRAVITY took home top honors becoming the first ever tie in PGA history.

David Heyman, Anthony Katagas, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, Alfonso Cuaron, Steve McQueen, Brad Pitt

“Every year at the Producers Guild Awards, we strive to honor all of our industry’s hardworking producers and seat as many members and guests as possible. We are thrilled to establish a continuing relationship with the Century Plaza, which has the quality, services, facilities and most importantly — space — to accommodate our rapidly growing membership,” said Vance Van Petten, National Executive Director of the PGA.

“The Century Plaza has a rich history with Hollywood, and we look forward to creating even more Hollywood milestones together with the PGA and the Producers Guild Awards,” said Duane Mah, Director of Events at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

One of the awards season’s marquee events, the Producers Guild Awards celebrates the finest producing work of the year, and gives the Guild an opportunity to honor some of the living legends who have shaped the profession. Considered a strong prognosticator for the Best Picture Oscar, the announcement of the Guild’s Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures is one of the most eagerly-anticipated of the season.

The list of recipients of honorary awards such as the Milestone Award, the David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures and the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television and the Vanguard Award read like a roster of the industry’s biggest names, including icons such as Steven Spielberg, Jerry Bruckheimer, Brian Grazer, J.J. Abrams, Steven Bochco, Clint Eastwood, Sherry Lansing, Robert Evans, Roger Corman and Lorne Michaels, extending back to such legends as Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney, Billy Wilder and Louis B. Mayer.

Held in January, the Producers Guild Awards is a must-attend event for the industry, and represents a unique chance for PGA members to extend their network, support their Guild, and pay tribute to the best of their profession.

The Producers Guild Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday evening (Jan. 19) in Beverly Hills, California.

The night marked a first with the shocking historic tie between GRAVITY and 12 YEARS A SLAVE for Best Picture (Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures).

In addition to the competitive awards, the Producers Guild presented special honors to TV’s ‘Big Bang Theory’ producer Chuck Lorre with the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television.

During his acceptance speech, Lorre told the audience why Ben Affleck, last year’s winner for ARGO, can play Batman and then Affleck joked about often being confused with Matt Damon, but rarely with Michael Fassbender.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today that Chris Meledandri, Founder and CEO of Illumination Entertainment, will receive the 2014 Visionary Award. The award will be presented to Meledandri at the 25th Anniversary Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Sunday, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

The Producers Guild Visionary Award recognizes a television, film or new media producer for his or her unique or uplifting contributions to our culture through inspiring storytelling or performance.

Meledandri is being recognized with the Visionary Award as one of the definitive producers of contemporary animation. He receives this award just as the latest blockbuster hit that he has produced, Universal and Illumination’s DESPICABLE ME 2, becomes the 5th highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide at the global box office.

“I have spent my career working alongside brilliant, passionate filmmakers to tell the types of stories that move audiences, and to receive recognition for this from the peers whose work I deeply admire makes this award all that more meaningful,” said Meledandri.

Previous honorees include producer, entrepreneur and humanitarian Russell Simmons, for his dedication to philanthropy and work as a film and television producer;  producer Laura Ziskin, for her commitment to storytelling and her efforts organizing the 2008 and 2009 Stand Up To Cancer campaign and television specials; Jeff Skoll, for his work with Participant Media in creating films that inspire social action; and Joel Gallen, who produced the landmark post-9/11 telethon “America: A Tribute to Heroes.”

Meledandri is currently in production on MINIONS, an original animated film starring Oscar® winner Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm that will be released on July 10, 2015, as well as an untitled project that will be released on February 12, 2016.

Meledandri was previously an executive at 20th Century Fox for 13 years. While there, he became founding president of 20th Century Fox Animation, which he headed for eight years, amassing more than $2 billion in global box office revenue.

During his tenure, he helped 20th Century Fox become a major player in the world of animated feature films and in 1998, he led 20th Century Fox’s acquisition of fledgling visual effects/commercial house Blue Sky Studios, which he built into a successful producer of animated features. He oversaw the creative and business operations of Blue Sky Studios, now 20th Century Fox’s wholly owned CGI studio. While at the studio, Meledandri supervised and/or executive produced movies including ICE AGE, ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN, ROBOTS, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, THE SIMPSONS MOVIE and DR.
