15 Best Film Scores of 2013

2012-film-scores

Contributed by Melissa Thompson and Michelle McCue

The sets. The hair and makeup. The cinematography. The story. The sound. All of the work of talented crafts people are pulled together under the very heart of any good movie – the score.

With the Academy Award nominations on Thursday, January 16, looming like the drumline at the head of a marching band, we thought we’d have a look back at some of the finer scores of 2013.

Listen and watch a handful of Hollywood’s leading composers discuss the art of scoring a film in The Hollywood Reporter’s round table discussion. With one hundred fourteen scores from 2013 vying for nominations in the Original Score category for the 86th Oscarswe suspect some of these names will be announced .

(THR)

Honorable Mention: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS from T Bone Burnett.

The soundtrack for INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS transported us to another time and place. The documentary feeling of the film stems from the Coens Brothers decision to shoot and record the music live with no playback and we joined right in the folk-song revival.

For more on the music, read a Q&A with T Bone Burnett HERE.

GRAVITY soundtrack

1. GRAVITY – Steven Price

For Alfonso Cuarón’s thriller, Price created a groundbreaking score, blurring the lines between electronic and organic sounds, incorporating a wide range of elements, from glass harmonicas to string and brass sections. The score captures the on-screen emotion and vacuum of space as another character in the film and left our hearts pounding.

2. THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES – Mike Patton

American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Patton, best known as the lead singer of the alternative metal/experimental rock bands Mr. Bungle and Faith No More, has composed a brooding and emotionally charged original score. Patton’s music guides the viewer through this multi-generational drama, linking characters, time periods, and locations with a harmonic convergence of jazz, folk, rock, blues and classical.

Patton’s score features an eclectic selection of music including selections by Arvo Part and Ennio Morricone.

all is lost

3. ALL IS LOST – Alex Ebert

In a film so devoid of dialogue, this great musical score assumed special importance. Director J.C. Chandor turned to acclaimed singer-songwriter Alex Ebert, leader of the band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, to compose the film’s score—his first such project.

“It was sort of a shocker in some ways,” says Ebert. “It’s amazing that J.C. would have that kind of faith in someone who hadn’t scored a film.”

Ebert says Chandor initially asked him to deliver very subdued materials, drones and low notes that sustained over scenes. He also specifically requested that the instrumentation avoid piano. That was challenging for the composer, who had already written some pieces on piano, but he understood Chandor’s reasoning.

“The piano has this inherent emotion to it,” he says. “We didn’t want anything that was ’emotion in a can’ or ‘tension in a can.’ But eventually I started taking more chances, and after some back and forth with J.C., we landed in this middle spot that I think was perfect.”

“It’s about beauty,” he says. “It’s emotional and everything that comes along with life and death, and nothing less. I think that’s the primary subject of humanity—and it’s something that you might want to stay away from because it would be overdramatic. But this dude’s in the middle of the ocean on a raft. Let the music be emotional because it is emotional. We followed the movie’s lead.”

philomena

4. PHILOMENA – Alexandre Desplat

The very emotional score from Alexandre Desplat’s PHILOMENA broke our hearts. We laughed and cried from beginning to end with Philomena Lee’s heart-wrenching story.

Oblivion

5. OBLIVION – Anthony Gonzalez,  M83, Joseph Trapanese

The score was one of the best of 2013 and an intregral part of OBLIVION’s sci-fi landscape.

6. CAPTAIN PHILLIPS – Henry Jackman

Jackman displays versatility in capturing both the intense, desperation and terror in the story of Captain Richard Phillips’ hostage situation with Somali pirates as well as the humanity of the circumstances. Hitting the right musical balance of drama and intensity was a challenge in minimalism for Jackman, so as not to manipulate the audience.

nebraska

7. NEBRASKA – Mark Orton

A member of the bluegrass folk collective Tin Hat, Orton’s vibe for Americana music was sought out by director Alexander Payne. Horns, acoustic strings and organ are some of the primary elemental instruments fueling the musical emotion to this story, capturing both the vast landscape and people of the flyover states. Orton, a graduate of the Sundance Filmmaker Institute, also scored the music to the 2014 Sundance premiere Drunktown’s Finest.

8. DESPICABLE ME 2 – Heitor Pereira

A celebrated musician and former member of the platinum-selling group Simply Red, Pereira sings to the hearts of children through his scores for Despicable Me 2. The sequel, which follows the further adventures of the notorious spy Gru, Pereira created specific themes for the new characters, specifically 1960s romantic comedy tones for his love interest Lucy and Latin-mariachi rhythms for the evil El Macho.

9. SAVING MR. BANKS – Thomas Newman

Newman has composed music for nearly 100 motion pictures and television series and has earned 11 Academy Award® nominations and six Grammy® Awards. His score goes hand-in-hand with the back story of Walt Disney and PJ Travers making of MARY POPPINS and left us looking for tissues by the film’s end.

frozen

10. FROZEN – Christophe Beck

The second of Disney’s movies that showed young girls it was okay to be their very own heroes!

rush

11. RUSH – Hans Zimmer

With their collaborations on blockbusters from The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons to more intimate projects such as Frost/Nixon, director Ron Howard and Hans Zimmer, a Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award® winner, once again joined forces for the sounds of RUSH.

Balancing the racers’ simple desires with their frenetic-yet-controlled behavior on the track was a challenge for Howard and Zimmer as they created the soundtrack to the film. The composer captured the spirit of the Formula 1 world.

epic

12. EPIC – Danny Elfman

The rousing score for The Leaf-Men. Enough said.

pacific rim

13. PACIFIC RIM – Ramin Djawadi

Okay, so maybe it didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations, but hot damn if the score to PACIFIC RIM wasn’t one of the coolest of 2013. Made us want to suit up as Jaeger pilots and make a last stand in our ‘Gipsy Danger’.

WWZ_CD-Bklt_VA-15B-560x560

14. WORLD WAR Z – Marco Beltrami

Animal skulls and teeth combined with percussion add to the tension of utter panic and anxiety in a world being overrun by a Zombie pandemic.

15. PRISONERS – Jóhann Jóhannsson

Giving you the sense of dread and desperation, Jóhann Jóhannsson’s score for PRISONERS left us with aches and chills over a parent’s worst nightmare.

croods

We couldn’t end our list without a quick mention for composer Alan Silvestri’s music for THE CROODS. While the film score conveyed beautiful themes and resonated on a deeper level than words could ever say, we were fans of how Silvestri combined the Abbey Road Orchestra  and the USC Trojan Marching Band… especially the percussion section!

PACIFIC RIM’s Guillermo Del Toro, Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba At BFI IMAX Premiere

PacificRim_IMAX_Kaiju

While America was celebrating the 4th of July in the U.S., the British were celebrating the release of PACIFIC RIM with the European premiere.

The apocalypse was cancelled as the cast and crew of PACIFIC RIM descended on London’s BFI IMAX Waterloo – but not before the Jaeger and Kaiju dwarfed the London sky line.

Director Guillermo Del Toro and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Rinko Kikuchi, alongside the likes of director Edgar Wright and Rizzle Kicks, stomped down the red carpet.

New PACIFIC RIM Featurette With Stars Idris Elba And Charlie Hunnam

PACIFIC RIM

Actors Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam, along with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, discuss the sci-fi action adventure and the characters of PACIFIC RIM in this brand new featurette.

Charlie Hunnam, who stars as Raleigh Becket, one of the brave Jaeger pilots, says, “The characters in the film are at the eleventh hour, and the only way they can overcome this colossal danger is by coming together and forgetting all their petty differences, be it nations or creeds or backgrounds. The one thing mankind has proven time and time again is that we can overcome any obstacle that we set our minds to, and I think that message will resonate with audiences.”

Get ready for giant monsters versus giant robots in a winner-take-all war that joins man and machine against aliens who ascend from the deep and be sure to check out a plethora of images from the upcoming film HERE.

Elba plays Stacker Pentecost who had been the commander of the Pan Pacific Defense Corp before the Jaeger Program was cut when the world leaders decided to shift their resources to other forms of defense. Now he leads those who are willing to stand with him in the Resistance.

The actor calls his character “a lifelong soldier and a natural born leader. No matter how big the problem is, his attitude is, ‘I’m going to find a way to fix this.’ Even after he loses his funding, he is still determined to fight and rally those who are left. Pentecost will not give up, even though he doesn’t have much to work with against an increasing number of Kaiju attacks. But as a strategist and a soldier, his only job is to figure out how to survive and to win.”

KAIJU (kaijū, Japanese) Giant Beast.

JAEGER (yā’gar, German) Hunter.

The global nature of the war against the Kaiju is reflected in the design, colors and insignia of the Jaegers, all giving nods to their country of origin. The four main Jaegers seen battling in the upcomng film are: Gipsy Danger, from the USA; the Chinese Crimson Typhoon; Russia’s Cherno Alpha; and Striker Eureka, from Australia.

No less attention was paid to the creation of the dreaded Kaiju, which are destruction incarnate. The designers gave the Kaiju different nicknames that were indicative of their most prominent physical attributes, like Knifehead, Axehead, Leatherback, etc. Some are viciously calculated, others are more raw power.

Del Toro assembled some of the top concept artists in the industry to design what he calls “the most terrifying but majestic creatures you could ever imagine,” each with its own distinct silhouette and lethal capabilities.

The Jaegers and the Kaiju were brought to life onscreen by the visual effects wizards at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), who were collaborating with del Toro for the first time. Together they executed epic battles that unfold on land and sea and in the air.

Del Toro exudes excitement when he says, “I want this film to be an inspirational adventure, like the movies I used to watch as a kid. It is my hope that after you see ‘Pacific Rim,’ you’ll want to be a Jaeger jockey. No matter what age you are, you’ll want to jump on board a Jaeger and head right into a Kaiju brawl.”

Del Toro equates the look of the U.S. of A.’s Gipsy Danger to “a classic gunslinger heading into a fight. A mixture of a deco skyscraper and John Wayne. Gipsy has swagger and is made to resemble a WWII fighter jet in paint job and details.”

Russia’s Cherno Alpha is a T-series Jaeger with an oversized nuclear reactor. Its exceptional brawn makes up for its more lumbering gait. It is the oldest, heaviest Jaeger in the surviving fleet.

China’s Crimson Typhoon is a Mark 4, the only Jaeger with three arms, thanks to its three-man pilot team. Its moves are as close as a massive Jaeger can get to martial arts.

Early in the Jaeger program, it was discovered that the complexity and sheer size of the robots made it impossible for one person to handle alone. The neural load proved fatal for a single brain. Eventually, they learned that it could only be done with two pilots: one controlling the Jaeger’s right hemisphere; the other, the left. But in order for that to work, they had to be in perfect sync – connected to the robot in body, and to each other in mind.

It’s Robot VS Kaiju In New PACIFIC RIM Trailer – Guillermo del Toro Talks Of Dream Of Being Jaeger Pilot

bbb_4258

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro presented never-before-seen footage and the new trailer from his highly anticipated sci-fi adventure “Warner Bros. Pictures and  Legendary Pictures PACIFIC RIM” today at NCM Media Networks’ “The Bigger Picture” Cinema Upfront Event at New York City’s AMC Loews Lincoln Square movie theater.

As a special guest of the country’s top national cinema network, he previewed a new trailer of the film and then spoke to a standing-room only crowd of over 700 advertising and media industry professionals, highlighting why the movie theater experience is so important for audiences and blockbuster films like PACIFIC RIM.

Below are highlights from his remarks:

“I think that it is very important for us to remember why we go to the theater – what makes the experience memorable. I think that one of the reasons why we all are still making movies and showing movies is because we expect new generations of filmgoers to truly experience films. Not only in the scope and the size we create, but also in the community experience – the fact that you go to a theater.

When I first went to a theater as a kid, I went with my mother. And I came to the realization that there were two worlds – one world was outside the doors, and the other was inside the theater.  I was so little that when I went to see that first movie, I fell asleep!  I woke up, fell asleep again, and the movie kept going – I was like four years old – and it was a double feature so I was having a sandwich and some popcorn with my mother.  When we came out, I wanted to go right around the block and go right back in again!

I was completely transfixed.  It was not TV and it was not us sitting on the sofa at home. It was going to a place that was very much a temple of images.  A temple where you can find an experience that you didn’t have in any other medium.

When we go to films, I think it is to find either one of two things, in every genre of every movie ever made – we either look for intimacy, or spectacle.  I think this second category is where we crafted “Pacific Rim.”  We made “Pacific Rim” thinking about skill, about how to best deliver a spectacle that was not only about showing things, but about making an audience become involved in that adventure — become involved in a world of that dimension.

In this movie, we figured out every single detail. We stared the adventure about three and a half years ago, and we started designing everything that you will see on the screen.  From the tiniest detail in a small plate in the robot, to the markings on the machines, the diagrams, the IDs, the pamphlets – everything. Then to the big, big scale – things like Kaiju, which are the monsters, and Jaegers, which are the robots.

When I was a kid, for me a Kaiju – a great Kaiju film – was a unique experience.  I was born in 1964 and I was able to see some of the great giant monster movies back when they were released.  Some people smile when you say kittens or puppies.  When you say giant monsters or giant robots, I smile!  That’s really what makes my day. And I believe that there is something in every kid, or at least in every male kid, that makes them smile the same way.

When you think about these things going at each other in the middle of a city, destroying airplanes, destroying towns, it is OK because there is no relation to real-world violence. There is just the beauty, the graphic majestic spectacle, of two forces of nature clashing with each other. I think that is awe inspiring. And there is something of an element of redemption, in the sense that as a kid you finally feel that the world realizes what it is to live in a place where gigantic things make no sense!

And I think that when you live in a world like that, when you are like a kid and fulfill the fantasy of seeing these creatures, you can also then access a world of adventure. We wanted to create an aspirational world of adventure with “Pacific Rim” where you could dream of something. We didn’t want to make a war movie that requires you to only endorse one single country, or ideology, or point of view. We wanted to make an adventure for the entire world. An adventure where a kid could dream of being a Jaeger pilot, the way our generation dreamt of being a cowboy or an astronaut.

And to deliver this, we need the big screen. We need the bigger picture, we need the theater. We need the communal experience of seeing it like that, and the fact that we are sharing it with other people and validating our experience with a group of other moviegoers that love the experience.

Today, I wanted you to get a sense of scale with the Jaegers, get a sense of how it feels to have something that is 25 stories high walking towards you.  With “Pacific Rim,” we went for incredibly beautiful, rich color – a saturated pallet that brings this sort of pop culture, comic book feel to the film. It’s really romantic and operatic; at least it is for giant monster and giant robot lovers!”

He then rolled several minutes of exclusive, never-before-seen footage from the film that truly showed the power of the big screen.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing the epic sci-fi action adventure from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

In case you missed it, here’s another look at the new trailer. “Pilot to Pilot connection… engaged!”

And for good measure, the Guillermo del Toro introduced Japanese trailer.

Today the Industry Trust for IP Awareness and Warner Bros. Pictures UK released a unique trailer for the upcoming epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim that promotes the value of a great movie experience.

Running in cinemas, digital, online and social media, the exclusive 30-second trailer celebrates the visual mastery behind the forthcoming blockbuster movie and directs audiences to Findanyfilm.com, a search engine for official film releases, all aboveboard and all in one place.

Josh Berger CBE, President & Managing Director, Warner Bros. UK, Ireland and Spain said: “This fantastic Pacific Rim trailer captures some of the vital ingredients that make a movie experience worth paying for and, at the same time, addresses the continued challenge posed by piracy.”

Liz Bales, Director-General of the Industry Trust for IP Awareness, said: “This latest ‘Moments Worth Paying For’ trailer celebrates the skill and creativity behind the finished film as something worth paying for – and what better way to bring that message to life than via the visual thrill-ride on offer in Pacific Rim?”

The Industry Trust’s “Moments Worth Paying For “campaign, launched in November 2010, has since gone from strength to strength. Independent tracking research by ICM in December 2012 revealed that those audiences exposed to the campaign were significantly more likely to pay for official film and TV than those not exposed to it.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.
