Check out the brand new poster for Focus Features’ upcoming film, KILL THE MESSENGER – opening in theaters on October 10, 2014. This one you’ll definitely want to keep on your radar during Awards Season. The first trailer debuts tomorrow.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Bourne Legacy”) stars in the dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb.

Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation’s streets…and further alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications. His journey takes him from the prisons of California to the villages of Nicaragua to the highest corridors of power in Washington, D.C. – and draws the kind of attention that threatens not just his career, but his family and his life.

Directed by Michael Cuesta (“Homeland”), KILL THE MESSENGER is written byPeter Landesman, based upon the books Dark Alliance, by Gary Webb, and Kill the Messenger, by Nick Schou

The huge cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Liotta, Tim Blake Nelson, Barry Pepper, Oliver Platt, Michael Sheen, Paz Vega, Michael Kenneth Williams, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Andy Garcia.

Every spring, high school seniors anxiously await letters of college admission that will affirm and encourage their potential. At Princeton University, admissions officer Portia Nathan (Tina Fey) is a gatekeeper evaluating thousands of applicants. Year in and year out, Portia has lived her life by the book, at work as well as at the home she shares with Princeton professor Mark (Michael Sheen). When Clarence (Wallace Shawn), the Dean of Admissions, announces his impending retirement, the likeliest candidates to succeed him are Portia and her office rival Corinne (Gloria Reuben). For Portia, however, it’s business as usual as she hits the road on her annual recruiting trip.

On the road, Portia reconnects with her iconoclastic mother, Susannah (Lily Tomlin). On her visit to New Quest, an alternative high school, she then reconnects with her former classmate, idealistic teacher John Pressman (Paul Rudd) – who has recently surmised that Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), a gifted yet very unconventional New Quest student, might well be the son that Portia secretly gave up for adoption years ago while at school. Jeremiah is about to apply to Princeton.

Now Portia must re-evaluate her personal and professional existences, as she finds herself bending the admissions rules for Jeremiah, putting at risk the future she thought she always wanted – and in the process finding her way to a surprising and exhilarating life and romance she never dreamed of having.

This film has been rated PG-13 (for language and some sexual material).

Production Beginning on Focus Features’ ADMISSION; Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Michael Sheen To Star

Production begins this week in New York and New Jersey on Focus Features’ Admission, directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Weitz. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.

The comedy/drama stars Screen Actors Guild Award winner Tina Fey (30 Rock), Paul Rudd (soon to be seen in This is 40), BAFTA Award nominee Michael Sheen (The Queen), Golden Globe Award nominee Gloria Reuben (ER), Wallace Shawn (of the upcoming A Late Quartet), and Academy Award nominee Lily Tomlin (Nashville). The screenplay is adapted by Karen Croner (One True Thing) and Mr. Weitz from Jean Hanff Korelitz’s 2009 novel of the same name.

Mr. Weitz, an Academy Award nominee as one of the screenwriters of About a Boy, most recently adapted and directed Being Flynn for Focus. He is producing Admission with Andrew Miano, his partner in the production company Depth of Field, and Kerry Kohansky-Roberts (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist). Academy Award nominee Caroline Baron (Capote) is executive-producing the movie. Admission director of photography Declan Quinn, production designer Sarah Knowles, editor Joan Sobel, and costume designer Aude Bronson-Howard are all reteaming with Mr. Weitz following their work together on Being Flynn. Focus holds worldwide rights to Admission, and will commence sales at this month’s Cannes International Film Festival. Focus director of development & production Christopher Kopp is supervising Admission for president of production Jeb Brody.

In the movie, Ms. Fey is portraying Portia Nathan, an admissions officer at Princeton University. Evaluating thousands of hopeful college students, the exceedingly bright and driven woman lives her life by the book, both at work and in her relationship with a faculty colleague, Mark (Mr. Sheen). Visiting an experimental New Hampshire high school submitting applicants, Portia is caught off guard when its co-founder John Halsey (Mr. Rudd) turns out to have attended college with her. She is then floored when reminded of the life-altering decision that she made while still a student herself; she had a son, who she gave up for adoption, and who she now realizes may be one of John’s students, the precocious misfit Jeremiah. As Portia’s emotions surge forth, she finds her life turning upside down in embarrassing ways and begins to bend the admissions rules – in the hopes of getting Jeremiah on the best path while perhaps righting her own as well.

Mr. Schamus said, “Everyone at Focus is delighted to be continuing our collaboration with Paul Weitz, a truly humane filmmaker. As always, Paul has joined with an amazing cast, for a story that promises not only laughs and tears, but the deep pleasures of understanding and empathy.”

In addition to Admission, current and upcoming Focus Features releases include Moonrise Kingdom, world-premiering as the opening-night film of the 2012 Cannes International Film Festival, the new feature from Wes Anderson, starring Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Jason Schwartzman; Lorene Scafaria’s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley; Sam Fell and Chris Butler’s ParaNorman, the new 3D stop-motion comedy thriller from animation company LAIKA; Jamie Travis’ contemporary comedy For a Good Time, Call…, starring Ari Graynor and Lauren Anne Miller; Closed Circuit, the suspense thriller directed by John Crowley and starring Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall; Gus Van Sant’s Promised Land, the contemporary drama written by and starring Matt Damon and John Krasinski; the historical tale Hyde Park on Hudson, directed by Roger Michell and starring Academy Award nominees Bill Murray and Laura Linney; and Joe Wright’s epic love story Anna Karenina, starring Keira Knightley, Jude Law, and Aaron Johnson.

Review: TRON: LEGACY

Greeting fellow programs. Seeing as it’s TRON Tuesday, you’re in for a special treat. Here’s my early, spoiler-free review of TRON LEGACY.

(Reviewed at AMC Universal CityWalk, Hollywood, Dec. 2, 2010.)

I’m just gonna come right out and say it – TRON was fun! And by TRON I mean TRON: LEGACY, the sequel to the 1982 Disney film TRON. Now typically this would not be my kind of movie, but I vaguely remembered the original (I was in high school) and my curiosity got the better of me. The film opens with Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), 18 yrs or so after the disappearance of his scientist father, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). A flashback shows Sam at 9 or 10 and the last time he saw his Dad. Then the film cuts back to current day in the film and Sam is now 27. It’s only when his father’s old friend, Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) pays him a visit, that Sam goes to his father’s old workshop.

Once there, Sam discovers his father’s computer still running and gets sucked onto the grid and into a digital adventure. I’m not going to say anymore otherwise explaining it all just gives it away….I hate reviews that blab everything.

I will say, first of all, the look of the film is amazing. It’s dark and hip and definitely high tech. The special effects were everything I was expecting and more. The modes of transportation are absolutely the coolest. And the way they appear!?!? Director Joseph Kosinski really gives you the feel of being in a video game (and not for nothing, but the vibe kind of reminded me a little of The Black Hole, which I loved). This is exactly the kind of film that works well in 3D. And if you see it in IMAX, it’s even more amazing, as you feel as if you are right in it.

One of the most pleasant surprises is that the film isn’t totally dependent on the special effects. The story is good and the characters are well thought out. One of my fears was that if the audience was not familiar with the original movie, they would somehow be lost in this one. That was not the case at all. The story moves along with the appropriate explanation of the “past” and stands on its own as an adventure for a new generation of fans. There are surprises around every corner and I happily had no idea where we were going until we got there.

Disney smartly returned Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner to their original characters, which brings a certain sentimentality for the almost cult-like followers of the first film, and many of the new characters are funny, weird and definitely cool. Olivia Wilde’s character, Quorra, shows up kickin’ ass.

Be on the look out for Michael Sheen’s character – he’s a cross between Frank-N-Furter and PT Barnum.

I would totally recommend this movie to anyone who just wants to sit back, relax and hang out in another world for a few hours.
