Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost known as Thule Station. There, a crew of international scientists has unearthed a remarkable discovery. But elation quickly turns to terrifying paranoia in the thriller The Thing, as the group of researchers encounters something inhuman that has the ability to turn itself into an exact replica of any living being.

Columbia University paleontologist Dr. Kate Lloyd (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’s MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD) has left behind the safety of her sterile laboratory and traveled to this desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime.

Joining a Norwegian research team led by Edvard Wolner (Fallen Angels’ TROND ESPEN SEIM) that has stumbled across a creature buried in the ice, Kate – along with fellow explorers Dr. Sander Halvorson (Season of the Witch’s ULRICH THOMSEN) and Adam (NCIS: Los Angeles’ ERIC CHRISTIAN OLSEN)—discovers an organism that seems to have died in the ice eons ago.

When a simple experiment near this outpost frees the thing from its frozen prison, Kate must join the pilot, Carter (Warrior’s JOEL EDGERTON), and his sidekick, Jameson (Lost’s ADEWALE AKINNUOYE-AGBAJE), to keep it from killing everyone and anything it encounters. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite suddenly mimics anything it touches…pitting human against human as it fights to survive and flourish.

The Thing, which serves as a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same name, is directed by MATTHIJS VAN HEIJNINGEN in his feature-film debut. The thriller is written by ERIC HEISSERER (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and based on the classic story of terror “Who Goes There?” by JOHN W. CAMPBELL JR.

THE THING will hit theaters October 14, 2011.

THE THING Trailer + New Photos = Intense

Watch Universal Pictures’ first trailer for THE THING (via MSN)

Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman.

In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up.

When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish. The Thing serves as a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same name. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, the thriller is produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman (Dawn of the Dead).

New Stills From Universal Pictures’ THE THING, LARRY CROWNE, & DREAM HOUSE

For those true geeks who keep a calendar of the upcoming movies throughout the year, Universal Pictures has some films that you may want to keep your eye out for. I’m the most interested in the first picture above for the 3rd version of THE THING and still wondering if it’ll be able to hold it’s own against the claustrophobia of the classic 1951 original and the shock value of John Carpenter’s 1981 horror film.

Queens native Josh Kovacs (Stiller) has managed one of the most luxurious and well-secured residences in New York City for more than a decade. Under his watchful eye, nothing goes undetected. In the swankiest unit atop Josh’s building, Wall Street titan Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) is under house arrest after being caught stealing two billion from his investors. Though amateurs, these rookie thieves know the building better than anyone. Turns out they’ve been casing the place for years, they just didn’t know it.

First Cast Members Confirmed for THE THING

A month or so ago (not entirely sure, because we didn’t run a story on it), a character list was released for the new sequel/prequel/remake of THE THING.  One of the main reasons I, personally, didn’t scope it out was that I heard it revealed some pretty deep spoilers on the project.  Now, according to Heat Vision Blog, some casting has been done on those characters.

They are reporting Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton have signed on as Ph.D. candidate and a blue collar helicopter pilot, respectively, who are thrust into terror when the Norwegian expedition team they are with in the Antarctic uncovers a UFO buried in the ice.

Blue collar helicopter pilot?  Really?  They couldn’t come up with anything besides that?  Again?

As indicated in the report, the film is tentatively titled THE THING, so the questions on how this is connected to John Carpenter’s 1982 version remain.  Shooting is set to begin on March 15th in Toronto.   Matthijs Van Heijningen is taking on directing duties.

THE THING Prequel Begins Filming in March

It has been almost a year since it was announced Universal was moving forward with their proposed sequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 version of THE THING.  At that time, Variety was reporting BATTLESTAR GALACTICA executive producer Ronald Moore was working on the screenplay with commercial director and producer Matthijs Van Heijningen taking a seat in the director’s chair.

Now, it seems, pre-production is finally coming to an close, as Production Weekly announced, via their Twitter feed, that the prequel is set to begin shooting in Toronto this coming March.  Production is expected to run until June.

In March, Moore said his film would be a “companion piece” to Carpenter’s film, and not a full-fledged remake as was previously rumored.

We’re telling the story of the Norwegian camp that found the Thing before the Kurt Russell group did.

While the thought of a sequel, prequel, or remake to Carpenter’s THE THING gives me CG nightmares, I do have some faith in Moore’s talent at expanding on established properties.

Unfortunately, much of what is going to make a THING prequel work is in the execution, particularly the Thing itself.  Much of Van Heijningen’s commercials have been character-driven, but there is one commercial he did for Pepsi Max that features some nice, practical effects featuring an octopus.  Still, time will tell how his talents will transfer over to the feature film world.

Universal finds a director for remake of ‘The Thing’

It’s been rumored and talked about for a while now, but Universal is apparently committed to reviving ‘The Thing’ with a new remake. This will become the third version of the movie with the last remake being John Carpenter’s 1982 version that scarred the Hell out of audiences with it’s ground-breaking special effects. The original version of the movie was made in 1951 by Howard Hawks and was titled ‘The Thing From Another World’.

Ron Moore (Exec Producer of ‘Battlestar Galactica’) will write the screenplay and Universal has now tapped Matthijs Van Heijninge to direct. He’s a producer and director of TV commercials, but this will be his first effort at directing a feature-film. Just as Carpenter’s version was based on John W. Campbell, Jr’s short story “Who Goes There,” this new remake will also apparently rely strongly on this same source material.

Van Heijningen has shot blurbs for brands including Toyota, Pepsi, Heineken, Bud Light and Visa. He is also developing “Army of the Dead” at Warner Bros. with producer Zack Snyder, who also crossed from commercials to features by directing the Strike-produced “Dawn of the Dead” remake.
