JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie To Be Helmed By Zack Snyder

justice-league-1

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie has received the green light.

“Confirming the studio’s plans for a movie based on its iconic super-team for the first time, Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman said the studio has set plans to make a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.”

“Like MAN OF STEEL and its follow-up, which starts production next month, JUSTICE LEAGUE will be directed by Zack Snyder. Henry Cavill is expected to return as Superman, along with Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, who play Batman and Wonder Woman, respectively, in 2016’s MAN OF STEEL sequel tentatively titled BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN.”

The report also states,

“It will be a further expansion of this universe,” said Mr. Silverman. “’Superman vs Batman’ will lead into ‘Justice League.’”

A script is still in development and Warner has not set a release date, though the movie is unlikely to come out before 2018. Mr. Silverman would not comment on what other heroes might join Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in the movie. However the studio has recently been casting the role of Cyborg, a half-robotic hero who is expected to have a cameo in “Batman vs. Superman” and then appear in “Justice League.” Other DC heroes who have been in Justice League comic books include Aquaman, Flash and Green Lantern.

The Justice League (of America) really began in 1940 in All Star Comics #3 as the Justice Society of America (JSA) which united the early heroes of National Periodicals Publications: Green Lantern, the Flash, Hawkman, Dr.Fate, Hour-Man, the Spectre, Sandman, and the Atom.

Superman and Batman were charter members with Wonder Woman and Black Canary along with other superheroes joining the team in later issues. That series ended its run in 1951 with All Star Comics #57.

When National (now referred to as DC, Detective Comics) began the silver age of comics with their re-introduction of the Flash in Showcase #4, they eventually decided to bring back the JSA concept under a new name, the Justice League of America (JLA) in Brave and Bold comics #28 in 1960 with founding members the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. After getting their own title, Superman and Batman became full time members.

Over the years this has proven to be one of DC’s most popular books as the team roster has expanded to include nearly all of the company’s heroes. The JLA first came to TV in 1967 as a segment of Filmation’s ” The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure” on CBS Saturday mornings. A few years later a paired-down JLA, “The Super Friends”, produced by Hanna/Barbara began a long run on ABC.

superfriends

In live action, members of the team were featured in a two-part NBC prime special as “Legends of the Superheroes”, and in 1990 an unsold JLA live action pilot was produced, but not aired, in 1997. The group returned to animation in 2001 in the “Justice League” series running for five seasons on cable’s Cartoon Network.

JLApilot

Snyder’s BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN will also star Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and reunites MAN OF STEEL stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

Newcomers include Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey of “300: Rise of an Empire,” and Tao Okamoto of “The Wolverine.” All three actors will play characters newly created for the film.

BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN is written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Ben Affleck Revealed As Batman In Warner Bros. Pictures’ New Super Hero Feature Film, Now Slated to Open July 17, 2015

benaffleck

Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne.

Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.”

MAN OF STEEL

The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The studio has slated the film to open worldwide on July 17, 2015.

Batman-With-Superman-Logo

Last month’s surprise announcement of the new movie featuring both Superman and Batman created a wave of excitement and immediately fueled discussion and debate—among fans as well as in the media—about who would put on the cape and cowl of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego.

Snyder successfully re-imagined the origin of Clark Kent/Superman in the worldwide blockbuster “Man of Steel,” which has earned more than $650 million worldwide to date, and climbing. The director will now create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.

Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

MAN OF STEEL

In the announcement, Silverman stated, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”

Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

Kroll added, “We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.”

Affleck recently starred in the Academy Award-winning Best Picture “Argo,” which he also directed and produced, earning acclaim and a BAFTA Award nomination for his performance in the film, as well as a number of directing honors. In 2010, he starred in and directed the hit crime thriller “The Town.” His recent acting work also includes “The Company Men,” “State of Play,” and “Hollywoodland,” for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

bAffleck-hollywoodland07

Earlier in his career, Affleck starred in and co-wrote (with Matt Damon) “Good Will Hunting,” for which he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

The new Super Hero film is being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he co-created with Zack Snyder. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan and Wesley Coller serving as executive producers.

Production is expected to begin in 2014.

The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

DC Comics and Warner Bros. Celebrate MAN OF STEEL Movie With Original Copy of ACTION COMICS #1

DC Entertainment And Warner Bros. Host Superman 75 Party At San Diego Comic-Con

The world of comics was abuzz at Comic-Con International: San Diego as the Holy Grail of comic books — an original copy of ACTION COMICS #1, featuring the first appearance of the world’s most iconic Super Hero, Superman — made a rare appearance last night as the guest of honor, along with Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and director Zack Snyder, at a party celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Superman. Widely considered to be the genesis of the superhero genre, ACTION COMICS #1 — an original on loan from the personal collection of musician Jack White (The White Stripes, The Racounteurs, The Dead Weather) arrived under heavy security to the star-studded Comic-Con event sponsored by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“There wouldn’t be a Comic-Con without ACTION COMICS #1 and Superman so it’s fitting that we’re honoring the comic book that started it all here in San Diego,” stated Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment. “It’s been a year filled with milestones for Superman – while we celebrate 75 years of entertainment from the world’s first Super Hero, the global success of Man of Steel proves Superman is more relevant than ever.”

Famed musician Jack White loaned his original, 1938 issue of ACTION COMICS #1 to DC Entertainment for use at the event, stating, “ACTION COMICS #1 is an important piece of history. Instead of keeping my comic locked inside a vault I want to share it with fans during key moments like Superman’s 75th anniversary, much like fine art is shared in museums.”

ACTION COMICS #1 made a grand entrance at the event, complete with a Brinks security truck delivery following a hand-off from Tornado Comics, a comic retailer that helped facilitate the appearance in San Diego. The comic was displayed in a special, “speeding bullet-proof” display case made specifically for the event, allowing guests to get an up-close look at what many consider to be the most valuable comic of all time.

In addition to the landmark appearance of ACTION COMICS #1, the San Diego celebration honoring Superman was a dazzling event at the Hard Rock Hotel, with guests including Man of Steel star Henry Cavill, Man of Steel director Zack Snyder, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson, DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, among many others. The event is part of a year-long celebration honoring 75 years of Superman that includes a commemorative logo, and a new, animated short that pays homage to Superman and the many iterations of the Super Hero throughout his 75 years. The animated short is produced by Zack Snyder and will be released later this year.

Superman fans attending Comic-Con International: San Diego can attend a special panel “Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment: Superman’s 75th Anniversary Celebration” on Saturday, July 20 at 4:15pm in room 6A. Panelists include Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman), Tim Daly (Superman: The Animated Series), Jim Lee (DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and artist for SUPERMAN UNCHAINED), Jack Larson (the original Jimmy Olsen from Adventures of Superman), talent from Man of Steel, and many more.

MAN OF STEEL

MAN OF STEEL – The Review

man-of-steel

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman – making his flight back into the multiplex after a 7-year absence. Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL is an improvement over Brian Singer’s SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006) which is never mentioned in discussions of great super-hero movies and Henry Cavill, this strapping young fella starring, makes Brandon Routh from the earlier film look downright womanly by comparison. Snyder has a distinctive vision to bring to the story and his “franchise reboot” at least feels like something other than a naked grab for dollars. It’s big and dark and eager to please, and it frequently succeeds, but despite its best intentions, it’s over-serious and overlong and not as much fun as it should be. MAN OF STEEL is a good movie but seldom ascends to the heights of 1978’s SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, still the best big-screen interpretation of the character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster eighty years ago.

MAN OF STEEL opens with Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lara Lor-Van (Ayelet Zurer) celebrating the birth of Kal-El, the first naturally born child in centuries on the dying planet Krypton. Rebellious General Zod (Michael Shannon) desires to take over power, battling and ultimately killing Jor-El (don’t worry – he’ll come back later to spiritually counsel his son). Just before Krypton implodes, baby Kal-El is rocketed away while the captured Zod and his goons are frozen eternally, to be thawed out later by the planet’s destruction. Kal-El reaches Earth and, as we’re shown is a series of flashbacks, is raised by upright Kansas farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane). They teach him to conceal his special powers as he grows because they know the human race would never accept him. The adult Clark Kent meets Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lois Lane while she’s on assignment in Canada to report an object trapped in ice which turns out to be the spaceship that contains the remains of General Zod. Lois begins an investigation of Clark, sparring with her editor Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), and eventually teams up with Superman to defeat Zod’s plan to replace humanity with the last of the Kryptonians.

MAN OF STEEL does what it does pretty well. The scenes where young Clark is baffled and traumatized by his special powers – the x-ray vision he initially can’t control or the heat beams that shoot from his eyes – provide good drama. The action sequences in the first half – an oil rig fire, a school bus accident, a tornado – are punchy and engaging, setting my hopes high. Unfortunately, when the action movies to Metropolis for the film’s finale, it feels like they handed the directorial reigns over to Michael Bay with massive big-scale effects sequences that may feed your inner 10-year-old’s appetite for destruction but seem dutiful instead of exhilarating. Since Zod’s a Krytonian, a foe of comparable strength, we get endless scenes of hero and villain smashing and sailing faster than speeding bullets through crumbling skyscrapers in a climactic battle that doesn’t know when to stop (thousands of Metropolites must perish in this climax but we never see them). It’s always been the more earth-bound quality of the Superman legend that made the comic-book fantasy soar, so to turn the climax into a Transformers retread is a disappointment. I wasn’t wanting, or expecting camp but MAN OF STEEL lacks a sense of humor. Snyder is unable to avoid the common comic-book adaptation trap of gloomy self-seriousness. Early in the film Lois Lane (Amy Adams) tells Clark Kent, who’s helping her unload her camera equipment to “be careful with those bags. They’re heavy”. It’s a funny line, but I was kept waiting for more like it.

Henry Cavill makes for a fine, rugged, muscular hero, combining correctly chiseled features with a likable soulfulness and humanity. He does a funny riff on the merit of handcuffs, but I mostly wished he would lighten up, or at least smile more. Amy Adams is less successful, turning Lois Lane into a relatively anonymous presence who makes little impact on the screen. She also seems miscast and, unless there was a cougar reference I missed, too old for the role (Ms Adams is in fact nine years older than Cavill) though we’re reminded several times that Clark Kent’s age is 33 (one of many Jesus references in the film – for more go HERE). A somber Michael Shannon lends gravity as a determined Zod, a military man born and bred to save his race. His is a complex and at times sympathetic villain and I did not miss Lex Luthor at all (though I did miss Jimmy Olsen – wtf?).

Visually, MAN OF STEEL is undeniably impressive. No expense has been spared bringing Snyder’s vision to the screen – it’s the hugest, loudest, smashiest film of the summer but too much of it is overkill, from the CGI destruction to Hans Zimmer’s bombastic score. MAN OF STEEL is not in the same league as the best men-in-tights adaptions. It’s well worth a look, but I think the more you dial down your expectations, the more you’ll enjoy it.

MAN OF STEEL New Featurette And Images

MAN OF STEEL

On June 14 Superman will soar through the skies once again in director Zack Snyder’s action adventure MAN OF STEEL. A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

Given the character’s iconic status, Henry Cavill, was both excited and humbled to play the titular character in MAN OF STEEL. “Superman is one of the truly special figures man has created throughout history,” he relates. “He stands for hope, for the ability to conquer adversity against all odds. That’s something we can always hold onto, no matter where we are in life or what’s going on in the world. We will always face hardships in one way or another, and therefore hope will always play a significant part in our lives. To take on that mantle of hope as Superman was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Snyder assures, “He has a red cape, he has an ‘S’ on his chest, he has a blue suit and red boots. He’s Superman.”

Born Kal-El of Krypton, raised Clark Kent on Earth. What world does he belong to? What world does he fight for? Those are the questions confronting Superman, and the choices he makes will determine the fate of the planet he has always called home.

“In the world of Super Heroes, Superman is the completely uncompromising figure who exists to represent the best that all of us can be,” director Zack Snyder states. “He is the ideal; he’s what we strive for, that magical, golden god, the kind of icon that has extended beyond the comics world and into all of popular culture.”

Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster and first appearing in the comic book Action Comics #1, published on April 18, 1938, Superman quickly became a cultural phenomenon, winning fans around the world in live-action and animated form in nearly every known entertainment medium. In feature films, TV shows, radio, video games, social media and literature, he has battled some of the greatest villains of all time.

Though the Man of Steel has graced the pages of comics and the small and big screens in various incarnations for over 75 years, his values have remained constant, serving as a beacon in an ever-changing and increasingly complex world.

Cavill admits he did not fully comprehend the extraordinary responsibility he took on in playing the role of the world’s most recognizable Super Hero until one day in Plano, when he met several Superman fans watching them film. “Their interest, and interaction with me, were enormously flattering, but also made me understand how important it is to them that I do justice to this character,” he relates. “I had always held the role in very high regard, but that day really instilled in me the value of the choice I’d made, and I was so honored. Thankfully, I really believe we’ve stayed true to the Superman the fans expect, but brought him into our modern times, and I hope they’ll really enjoy the result.”

“Superman belongs to all of us,” Snyder concludes. “He represents the ultimate hero, and a celebration of Super Hero culture by encompassing all the incredibly cool attributes that inspire us—flight, speed, strength—and the best of humanity, like the importance of family, however you define that, and our need for love and a sense of belonging in the world. That is why, amidst all the awesome visuals, the intense battles, the problems of the planet that he takes on on our behalf, we want him to win: because he’s true, because he has a good heart and pure intentions. We want him to choose us, because we want to be the best that we can be, just like him.”

The S-shield, perhaps the most instantly recognized family crest in history, has long represented the strength and courage of the Super Hero who proudly bears it on his chest. Originally standing for Superman, the “S” has since become the heraldic symbol of the house of El, and stands for “hope.” Similarly, Krypton’s council members bear their own glyphs, as does Zod and other members of the Kryptonian elite. The glyphs all have origins in Kryptonian history and are not based on any Earthly symbology.
