The First Trailer For RAGNAROK Is Here

RAGNAROK Domestic adapted Art

Here’s a first look at the brand new trailer for RAGNAROK starring Sofia Helin and Pål Sverre Hagen (KON-TIKI).

Archeologist Sigurd Svendsen (Pål Sverre Hagen) has for years been obsessed with the Oseberg Viking ship. The only inscription found on the ship is the enigmatic ´man knows little` written in runes.

Sigurd is sure that the Oseberg ship contains the answer to the mystery of Ragnarok, the end of days in Norse mythology. When his friend Allan finds similar runes on a stone from the north of Norway, Sigurd becomes convinced that the runes are in fact a treasure map.

Together they mount an expedition group and their adventure leads to “No man’s Land” between Norway and Russia, which has been deserted for decades. Here Sigurd learns the true meaning of the runes – a secret more terrifying than he could possibly imagine.

Directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose (COLD PREY – THE BEGINNING) and written by John Kåre Raake, Magnet Releasing will release RAGNAROK on iTunes/OnDemand and in select theaters August 15.

I SAW THE DEVIL Trailer

From Magnet Releasing comes the trailer for the horror film I SAW THE DEVIL.

Synopsis:

I SAW THE DEVIL is a shockingly violent and stunningly accomplished tale of murder and revenge from Korean genre master KIM Jee-woon (The Good, The Bad, The Weird and A Tale of Two Sisters). Oldboy’s CHOI Min-sik plays Kyung-chul, a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. The embodiment of pure evil, he has committed horrifying and senselessly cruel serial murders on defenseless victims, successfully eluding capture by the police.

On a freezing, snowy night, his latest victim is the beautiful Ju-yeon, daughter of a retired police chief and pregnant fiancée of elite special agent Dae-hoon (The Good, The Bad, The Weird’s LEE Byung-hyun). Obsessed with revenge, Dae-hoon decides to track down the murderer, even if doing so means becoming a monster himself. And when he finds Kyung-chul, turning him in to the authorities is the last thing on his mind.

The lines between good and evil fall away in this diabolically twisted game of cat and mouse. Pushing the concept of revenge to its most extreme limits, KIM Jee-woon brilliantly transcends the police procedural and serial killer genres in surprising and thrilling new ways.

I SAW THE DEVIL will be in theaters on March 4, 2011. Visit the film’s official site HERE or on Facebook HERE.

BLACK DEATH Red Band Trailer

Magnet Releasing has debuted this red band trailer for their upcoming action, bubonic plague film BLACK DEATH.

“Time to repent” is right. Yikes – this film is rife with some hardcore, medieval torture. Good times.

Synopsis:

The year is 1348. Europe has fallen under the shadow of the Black Death. As the plague decimates all in its path, fear and superstition are rife. In this apocalyptic environment, the church is losing its grip on the people. There are rumors of a village, hidden in marshland that the plague cannot reach. There is even talk of a necromancer who leads the village and is able to bring the dead back to life. Ulric (Sean Bean), a fearsome knight, is charged by the church to investigate these rumors. He enlists the guidance of a novice monk, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) to lead him and his band of mercenary soldiers to the marshland, but Osmund has other motives for leaving his monastery. Their journey to the village and events that unfold take them into the heart of darkness and to horrors that will put Osmund’s faith in himself and his love for God to the ultimate test.

BLACK DEATH premieres on Video On Demand on February 4, 2011 and in theaters on March 11, 2011. Find the film on Facebook here.

VANISHING ON 7th STREET Trailer Debuts

From the director of THE MACHINIST comes this creepy trailer for VANISHING ON 7TH STREET starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo.

Tapping into one of humankind’s most primal anxieties…fear of the dark. Oh yeah, I’m definitely in for what looks to be one scary, apocalyptic thriller! You can check out the trailer on the film’s YouTube Channel from 3 months ago here.

Synopsis:

An unexplained blackout plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, and by the time the sun rises, only a few people remain—surrounded by heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. A small handful of strangers that have survived the night (Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, John Leguizamo and newcomer Jacob Latimore) each find their way to a rundown bar, whose gasoline-powered generator and stockpile of food and drink make it the last refuge in a deserted city. With daylight beginning to disappear completely and whispering shadows surrounding the survivors, they soon discover that the enemy is the darkness itself, and only the few remaining light sources can keep them safe. As time begins to run out for them, darkness closes in and they must face the ultimate terror

Watch The New Trailer For Gareth Edwards’ MONSTERS

A new domestic trailer for MONSTERS, somewhat different than the one we showed you back in July, has debuted on Apple iTunes. Alien invasion films a-plenty with MONSTERS and SKYLINE due out by the end of 2010 and BATTLE: LOS ANGELES scheduled to be released in March 2011. Cool beans by me.

Synopsis:

Six years ago previously, a NASA probe returning to earth with samples of an alien life form, crashed over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear, and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain “the creatures”… The story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

MONSTERS will also be shown in the United Kingdom on Saturday, Aug. 28th, at the Film4 FrightFest which runs from August 26 to August 30 in London’s Leicester Square. The film already saw some fantastic reviews out of SXSW and Cannes – including this one here from IGN. Look for MONSTERS on-demand on September 24th and in theaters on October 29th. You can like the film on Facebook.

As an extra treat, here’s a making-of video for the film.

Review: ‘Big Man Japan’

bigmanjapan

‘Big Man Japan’ follows the exploits of a middle-aged man whose job entails being occasionally shocked with electricity that turns him into Dai Nipponjin, a several stories tall behemoth that defends Japan from a variety of giant monsters. Think of Ultraman as a blue-collar worker and you’re on the right track. Instead of being a revered hero of the people, Dai Nipponjin is reviled as a noisy and destructive oaf.

‘Big Man Japan’ is a clever satire, a deconstruction of the Japanese super hero but also a decidedly acute dissection of Japan itself, the influence of American culture and the relationship between Japan, the United States and North Korea. It’s a lot to pack into one movie, but creator/director/star Hitoshi Matsumoto pulls it off without a hitch. Admittedly, if you go into this film with little or no knowledge of the above, then prepare to be baffled at some points, but know that much of the comedy is born out of the characters.

Matsumoto is a renowned Japanese comic and ‘Big Man Japan’ is his first feature film. Shot in the style of a documentary, Matsumoto litters the movie with a kind of dry, self-deprecating humor that reminds me very much of Brit comic, Ricky Gervais. Like Gervais, Matsumoto is most interested in the kind of sad, pathetic character that surrounds his self in denial, yearns for entitlement and skirts responsibility. The main character in ‘Big Man Japan,’ Daisato, is exactly that type of character, a pariah in the eyes of the people he has sworn to protect.

The film shifts style and focus from the understated moments with Daisato to highly absurd comic fantasy featuring giant CGI monsters. The creature designs never fail to amuse and the effects work in service of the story. Monsters range from giant demons to massive hoping legs topped with human heads to skyscraper-sized old men in diapers.

It is possible to come to this movie green and be entertained, though it is definitely skewed towards an audience that is familiar with daikaiju (giant monster) cinema.

‘Big Man Japan’ is the sixth and final film for Magnet Releasing’s Six Shooter Film Series, and it is a satisfying end to a remarkably successful slate of movies.

‘Big Man Japan’Â  opens in Los Angeles at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre and in New York on May 15

[Overall: 4 stars out of 5]
