Hell in Space! EVENT HORIZON Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

ehheader

“Rescue the crew, salvage what’s left of the ship. The crew is dead, doctor. Your ship killed them!”

eh3

EVENT HORIZON (1997) plays this weekend (August 26th and 27th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

eh6

EVENT HORIZON is almost 20 years old but it’s midnight movie cult status is fairly new. I saw it when it was new and thought it was good, but over the years a lot of younger movie geeks, to whom  EVENT HORIZON as apparently struck a chord, have approached me wanting to talk about it, and now here we are presenting at midnight at The Tivoli. Good.

eh5

EVENT HORIZON was made in 1997 and is a somewhat conventional science-fiction horror film that reflects upon earlier sci-fi efforts such as 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY and ALIEN, yet owes as much to the some of the gorier horror films of the ‘80s, especially the Hellraiser series.

eh4

The Event Horizon is a spaceship with the capabilities to “travel faster than the speed of light.” In the year 2040, the ship hasn’t been heard from in seven years later, so a rescue mission aboard the U.S.S. Lewis and Clark is charged with bringing the crew and the entire ship of the Event Horizon back. Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) is in charge of the operation. A British scientist, Dr. Weir (Sam Neill), haunted by the memories of his deceased wife, Claire, which are planted inside his deepest thoughts must join Miller and his crew for he was the one that designed the spaceship, Event Horizon. The rest of the cast consists of Peters (Kathleen Quinlin), and Justin (Jack Noseworthy), a rookie technician. Also, a psychologist, a pilot, and a wisecracking rescue technician round out the remaining characters. EVENT HORIZON is never predictable, the special effects are very good, and the film has a surreal, imaginative atmosphere that generates a breathtaking albeit claustrophobic fear. It really is ‘Hell in Space’

eh1
EVENT HORIZON was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who’s given us films in the MORTAL COMBAT, RESIDENT EVIL, and ALIEN VS PREDATOR series. Anderson has been accused of being a hack, but he delivers films with medium budgets and large scale special effects in a decent, workman-like manner. EVENT HORIZON is his best film – it’ wickedly scary, gory as hell, and does a good job showing what’s it like when people are forced to relive their own nightmares. It lacks logic and sense so if you’re looking for comprehension, look elsewhere. EVENT HORIZON was not a success upon its initial release and it may not have taken sci-fi-horror films to any new horizon, but it obviously stuck in the minds of filmgoers who caught up with at some point on DVD and I’m glad it’s showing midnights this weekend.

eh2

Don’t miss EVENT HORIZON when it screens midnights this weekend at The Tivoli

img12

Trailer Debuts for William H. Macy’s Touching RUDDERLESS

Rudderless_FinalPoster

Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the brand new trailer for William H. Macy’s upcoming directorial debut RUDDERLESS. Definitely one to put on your October calendar, the movie had its world-premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it was the closing night film.

In RUDDERLESS, Billy Crudup plays Sam, a former high-profile advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the sudden death of his son. Living off the grid on a docked sailboat, he wastes away his days while drowning his pain in alcohol. When Sam discovers a box filled with his son’s demo tapes and lyrics, his own child’s musical talent is a revelation for him, a grieving father who felt he’d been absent from his son’s life.

Communing with his deceased son’s dashed dreams, Sam learns each song and eventually musters the will to perform one at a local bar. When Quentin, a young musician in the audience, is captivated by the song, the unlikely duo forms a rock band that becomes surprisingly popular and revitalizes both of their lives.

RUDDERLESS1

Crudup, who gives a searing performance, leads an exemplary cast that includes Anton Yelchin as Quentin, Selena Gomez, Laurence Fishburne and Felicity Huffman.

With RUDDERLESS, William H. Macy helms a poignant and inspirational musical drama about the power of love, forgiveness and redemption. He says, “One of the major characters in the film is the music. Prepare to lose your heart to Billy Crudup. His performance is one of those cinematic gems you wait your whole life for.”

RUDDERLESS opens in theaters and available on Digital HD & On Demand October 17.

Watch Three New Clips From William Eubank’s THE SIGNAL

THE SIGNAL

Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, and Laurence Fishburne star in Will Eubank’s new thriller THE SIGNAL, a Focus Features release. Check out the brand new clips below.

Nic (Brenton Thwaites of The Giver and Maleficent), Haley (Olivia Cooke of Bates Motel), and Jonah (Beau Knapp of Super 8) are three college students pondering the future. Haley is relocating for a year, and her devoted boyfriend Nic and his pal Jonah are helping in the cross-country move.

But their road trip across the Southwest experiences a detour: the tracking of a computer genius who has already hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. Nic and Jonah have piqued this mysterious hacker’s interest, and vice versa. The trail heats up, provocations are traded online, and the trio find themselves drawn to an isolated area. Night falls, contact is made, and suddenly everything goes dark.

When Nic regains consciousness, he is in a waking nightmare. His friends are nowhere to be seen, but he is determined to locate them – in whatever form they may still be alive. His only lead is the man who now meticulously interrogates him, Dr. Wallace Damon (Academy Award nominee Laurence Fishburne). Damon voices concern for Nic’s safety, and tries to evaluate.

THE SIGNAL is produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Tyler Davidson & written by William Eubank & Carlyle Eubank and David Frigerio.

In a recent interview, director/co-screenwriter William Eubank was asked if there were there any low-budget or low-fi sci-fi films of more recent vintage that inspired him such as PI – Darren Aronofsky’s first movie – or Christopher Nolan’s MEMENTO?

In terms of challenge-the-mind movies, Eubank said, “PI I always think about, because I love the fact that it’s a mind-twister that occurs mainly in a room. MEMENTO is a good reference but I never really thought about it while doing THE SIGNAL. I do tend to think about small sci-fi a lot, like Duncan Jones’ MOON; stories where you’re forced to create a story that starts within a room and then break out after that, having the walls evaporate because you’re so concerned about what’s going on with the characters. THE SIGNAL is different in that it starts out in the open and then pretty quickly goes somewhere else; we’re forcing the audience to be detained with Nic. The character goes from freedom to imprisonment. I thought about Vincenzo Natali’s CUBE – and any movie that puts a character, where they don’t understand what’s going on, into containment.”

You have been chosen.

I’m sure by now you can appreciate where we are coming from.

Nic, Haley and Jonah are not isolated occurrences.

New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and 23 other cities will encounter THE SIGNAL on June 13th.

Holly-Color_headshot-5x7

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey of “300: Rise of an Empire,” and Tao Okamoto of “The Wolverine” have joined the cast of the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film.

All three actors will play characters newly created for the film.

Snyder stated, “Holly has always been one of my favorite actresses; she has immense talent and is always captivating on screen.
