Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm And Jeremy Renner Play A Game of TAG

For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade—risking their necks, their jobs and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry: “You’re It!”

This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready.

Based on a true story, the New Line Cinema comedy TAG shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.

TAG is directed by Jeff Tomsic (Comedy Central’s “Broad City”), with a starring ensemble cast led by Ed Helms (The “Hangover” movies, “We’re the Millers”), Jake Johnson (TV’s “New Girl”), Annabelle Wallis (“The Mummy”), Rashida Jones (TV’s “Parks and Recreation”), Isla Fisher (“Now You See Me”), Leslie Bibb (“Iron Man 2”), Hannibal Buress (“Neighbors”), with Jon Hamm (“Baby Driver,” TV’s “Mad Men”) and Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” “The Town”).

The TAG screenplay was written by Rob McKittrick (“Waiting”) and Mark Steilen (TV’s “Mozart in the Jungle”), screen story by Mark Steilen, and based on the Wall Street Journal article entitled “It Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being It,” by Russell Adams. The film is produced by Todd Garner and Mark Steilen, with Hans Ritter, Richard Brener, Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter serving as executive producers.

The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Larry Blanford, production designer David Sandefur, editor Josh Crockett, and costume designer Denise Wingate.

TAG is set for a June 15, 2018 release.

BABY DRIVER – Review

Edgar Wright knows cinema. It’s evident in the way he writes his characters. It’s evident in how he chooses to tell his stories. It’s evident in the little visual nods he sprinkles into each scene, like tiny cinematic sprinkles – though they may seem unnecessary, they add to the delightful treat for film lovers. And so, with each new film, he pushes himself in terms of telling a new type of story and delivering it in a way that pushes his exhilarating style. It’s impossible to watch an Edgar Wright film and not feel the energy he has for the project, complete with those fun little sprinkles on top.

His unabashed glee for filmmaking has come to a head with BABY DRIVER. Years of studying film, analyzing the camerawork, acknowledging the tropes, and listening to the importance of a solid soundtrack, has amounted to a cinematic fervor that he hasn’t exhibited before. Sure, films like HOT FUZZ and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD have shown the filmmaker challenging his comedic visual chops or adapting a new visual language, but with his sixth feature film, Wright gathers his knowledge and love of cinema into a nearly two-hour assault on the senses that’s sure to be one of the most talked about films of the year.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a kid who walks (or drives) to the beat of his own drum. He’s constantly plugged into his headphones to drown out the hum in his head from a childhood accident, and in doing so, he has created the ultimate soundtrack for the film. You see, Baby is a getaway driver who is looking to get out of his contract with his crime boss (Kevin Spacey). When he meets the girl of his dreams at a diner (Lily James), he sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But as we all know with this genre, there’s always one last heist and it never goes as planned.

Relative newcomer Ansel Elgort is a delight, as he saunters and spins his way around veteran talent like Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, and Jon Hamm. There’s a coolness to his performance that matches Wright’s style. It’s never cocky or ultra-masculine; it’s more indicative of Marlon Brando’s or James Dean’s brooding cool in THE WILD ONE or REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. Spacey seems to be toning it down (thankfully) to make room for Foxx, Hamm, and Eliza Gonzalez to flex their intimidating muscles opposite our puppy-eyed hero.

However, it’s important to remember that behind those soft eyes and quiet accent is fuel and rock n’ roll. Wright reminds us of this throughout the majority of the film. Like a Nirvana song where the verses are slightly softer and prettier and the choruses are loud and in your face, Wright incorporates those same tempo changes into the film. He’s not afraid to let the sweet moments between Baby and his waitress girlfriend shine, but he also ramps up the the intensity and is perfectly comfortable behind the wheel. It’s a balancing act, but he masters both with finesse and skill.

What might be the most astonishing feat but feels effortless, is the editing accompanied with each carefully selected song (curiously done by two editors who haven’t always worked together). The soundtrack, which runs the gamut from 60’s R&B like Carla Thomas, 70’s punk including The Damned, and a dash of modern hip-hop with Run the Jewels, is used throughout the film to coincide with the action, making the film the equivalent of an action movie musical. It’s one thing to listen to these songs, but it’s completely different watching how each drum beat and chord change matches up perfectly with the film.

Many might recognize the familiar story beats and cinematic tropes and see it as lazy or that Wright and his crew are copying off the films that have come before. Yet, Wright isn’t trying to hide his references. In fact, he openly showcases his love of these previous films throughout. You can’t have a kid from the “wrong side of the tracks fall in love with a waitress at a diner without a little cheese. When you name the pizza place in your film “Goodfellas” – a film acknowledged as a cornerstone for film soundtracks – you clearly aren’t hiding your influences. Instead, Wright chooses to use these influences to create a cinematic language that walks a fine line between acknowledging the past and winking at the audience (something Tarantino falls on the wrong side of most times).

BABY DRIVER is an adrenaline-fueled love letter to the pulpy films from the 40s and 50s that’s precisely set and edited to the ultimate mixtape. Thoroughly exhilarating with just a touch of pathos, Edgar Wright has found the perfect vehicle for his passionate, cinematic voice. Each of our lives is set to a soundtrack, and it’s up to us to choose what track we want to live by.

WHO IS BABY DRIVER?

Cool but a little naive. Young but with an old soul. goofy at times, but all business when it counts. Thrillingly good at his given task, but not always aware of the consequences of what he does. That’s Baby, played by Ansel Elgort, a character Edgar Wright created as a way for moviegoers to live vicariously through a criminal, but also experience the very real fallout of that world.

“The movie is structured so it opens with the dream of being a getaway driver, and very quickly turns into the nightmare of being a criminal,” says Wright. “The opening chase is sort of positioned as a clockwork act of precision. Everything goes right. Then very quickly, with subsequent situations, things start to go wrong, and very visceral consequences start to bear down. The storm clouds have been gathering during the movie. At some point, Baby’s luck is gonna run out.”

The Baby we meet at the beginning of the movie – hidden behind sunglasses, dialed in to his iPod playlist, then a hellion at the wheel – is like the greatest gang apprentice ever. “This kid’s a hotshot, but he’s also on the fringes of the gang,” says Wright. “He literally sits as far away from them as he can, because he really doesn’t want to be part of the group. He thinks, wrongly, that he can be a getaway driver but not be a criminal Like, ‘I’m just the courier. I don’t have anything to do with the bad stuff.’ The action scenes are kind of like Baby’s day job, and I think a lot of people that work in a job sometimes shield themselves in a different persona. Then when they’re home, they’re a different person.”

When Wright was dreaming up the role, he envisioned a riff on the strong silent type personified by Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen, but with the tension that it might all be a front. “You meet him, and he’s a badass in his profession, and then immediately afterwards you start to meet the real kid. It’s an interesting dichotomy, that he’s really good at a job that he should not be doing.”

The music that drives the Baby Driver is, to Wright, indicative of his twofold persona. Blasting his favorite tunes while he does his job looks cool, but it masks a defect tied to a tragedy. “He has this hearing defect, tinnitus, a whine in his ear caused by being in a car crash when he was young,” says Wright. “It has the effect of him not wanting to talk too much, because people with hearing defects can feel more self-conscious talking. But the other aspect of that is to listen to music, to drown out the whine. It becomes a security blanket, and then a full-blown obsession. He literally has to soundtrack his entire life because he can’t really do things without the right music playing.”

Baby is encouraged by his elderly deaf foster father (CJ Jones) to get out of his life of crime. Meeting the friendly, beautiful waitress Debora (Lily James) further articulates for him how misdirected his life is, and how much better it could be. But Baby has to make that leap, and cut ties with his profession. What will it cost?

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES – Review

How’d that beloved tune from the “pre-fab four” go? “Another Pleasant Valley Sunday, here in status-symbol land”. Well, they might’ve been crooning about the locale of this new comedy. Everybody’s lawn is perfect, right out of AMERICAN BEAUTY. Maybe even “picture perfect”, but more than a bit dull. Some of the residents perhaps secretly hope that things will get shaken up a tad. Ah, be careful what you wish for, so goes the old saying. That’s what happened in the final John Belushi/Dan Aykroyd team-up in 1981, NEIGHBORS. But instead of that off-kilter, way-too friendly couple, the new arrivals bore more than a passing resemblance to MR. & MRS. SMITH (not the Hitchcock comedy, but the first pairing of Pitt and Jolie). That’s the premise, as two “normals” risk life and limb when they’re KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES.

The Gaffneys, Karen (Isla Fisher) and Jeff (Zach Gallifianakis), seem to be living the “American dream”. They’ve got two pre-teen boys and live in cozy two-story home in an up-scale cul-de-sac. Karen takes care of said home, while running a part-time interior design biz from the study. Jeff, like many of his neighbors, works at a big local aeronautics company. He heads the human resources department in one of the more popular offices. That’s because he has internet access (too many sensitive government projects are going on upstairs, so no web surfing). The Gaffneys are contemplating a romantic Summer when they load their boys into a bus bound for camp. As they clumsily try to heat things up (if ya’ know what I mean), a moving van pulls into the driveway of the empty house across the street. New neighbors! And quite a glamorous duo, it’s the Joneses, travel writer Tim (Jon Hamm) and food blogger Natalie (Gal Gadot). They soon pay the Gaffneys a visit, even bringing them a hand-crafted gift. Jeff develops a bit of a “man crush” on Tim, but Karen’s radar is activated. Something’s just not right about them. Tim just “happens” to run into Jeff and invites him to lunch where Tim is way too interested in Jeff’s routine job (and his co-workers). During a late night exploration of the Jones house, the Gaffneys discover a room full of surveillance tech and gadgets. Could they be spies? And who are there bosses? This could make things very awkward at the next block party!

“Huzzah!” and a hardy, heartfelt “Welcome back!” to Ms. Fisher, who has been absent from screens for three years (there was a cameo in her hubby’s THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY a few months ago). In her first major role since 2013’s LIFE OF CRIME, she is the story’s instigator, the person who really puts the events in motion. Fisher’s a great comic partner for Galifianakis, but also marvelous when she’s intimidated by Gadot in the big changing room scene (showcased in the trailers and TV ads). While her hubby goes into panic mode after a big chase/shoot-out, Karen is invigorated even getting a case of the “munchies”. This is a spirited energetic comic performance, perhaps her best work since her break-out role in (no!) 2005’s WEDDING CRASHERS. As for her on-screen hubby, Galifianakis is much more grounded than he was in the very recent dud MASTERMINDS, making Jeff less of an outlandish cartoon, more of a sometimes goofy, bewildered “guy next door” (maybe a distant, less fanatical cousin of Ned Flanders from TV’s “The Simpsons”). Yes, he’s got a weird fascination with home beer brewing and indoor sky-diving, but Jeff’s a dependable “Joe”, who’s pretty clumsy, but aways sees the best in people. Still, he’s yearning for something…

That yearning is somehow fulfilled by Hamm, who’s doing more than a riff on Bond. He treads a delicate line as Tim, who is engaged in a dance of seduction with Jeff in order to get needed intel. The surprise (especially for Tim) is that the funny, little fellow answers his own yearning for a human connection. The tough (always has a 5 o’clock shadow) agent really just wants a pal. Hamm has finally gotten a film role that allows him to shed the ultra-cool brooding Don Draper of “Mad Men”, while exercising his comic chops and flexing an action-hero swagger. Besides caring about Jeff, Tim is crazy about his wife played by new movie Wonder Woman Gadot as super model/assassin, deadly and gorgeous. Her Natalie is all business, and is genuinely stunned that her partner/hubby develops feelings for the “squares”. Her line delivery is more subtle and calculating, as in the aforementioned scene with Fisher. Natalie is playing with Karen, as a cat plays with a trapped mouse. Her explaining her accent by telling everybody that she’s from Greece (like a certain warrior princess) is a nice touch. As precise as Hamm’s Tim is, he barely holds his own while battling by her side. The great supporting cast includes several actors from the acclaimed HBO comedy “Veep”, namely Matt Walsh as Jeff’s neighbor/co-worker, Kevin Dunn as the company security chief, and another of the show’s guest stars in a most unexpected role.

Feature comedy director Greg  Mottola (SUPERBAD, ADVENTURELAND, PAUL) deftly guides this terrific ensemble, keeping the story flowing, and happily avoiding that deadly lull at the one-hour mark that derails many a funny flick. Michael LeSieur’s clever script delivers big laughs while making these characters feel real, never mere gag props. He also provides several great set pieces aside from the shoot-out and dressing room scenes. A lunch at a secret, exotic eatery is a true “gut-buster” (some entrees can bite back). Despite its PG-13 rating, this is a fairly adult story, but one that doesn’t depend on a barrage of “F-bombs” to prop up the plot. And hey, the best jokes aren’t in the trailer (just as with the new GHOSTBUSTERS and WAR DOGS), and it’s well under two hours (somebody knows how to edit!). You’ll have a most entertaining time watching and KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES.

Get ready for a big load of Minion cuteness! Stuart, Kevin and Bob journey through history in search of a new master in the official trailer for MINIONS.

The story begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters – from T. rex to Napoleon – the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he – alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob – ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

The film also features Jon Hamm, Steve Coogan, Allison Janney and Michael Keaton. Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today, MINIONS is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda.
