BENNY & JOON – The Blu Review

Benny loves his sister Joon unconditionally, but she is becoming a bit too much to handle. He has taken care of her ever since their parents passed away, and her mental illness is taking its tole on Benny. To make matters worse, Joon lost a wager which left her responsible for Sam, one of the other players relatives. Benny is forced to open his home to the very eccentric Sam, who seems to have molded himself after Buster Keaton. What none of them expected to happen was for Joon to fall in love with Sam, and vice-versa. Theirs is definitely a love for the storybooks.

Is Benny & Joon a realistic story? Of course not. Is it an amazing story?  You bet it is! Mary Stuart Masterson plays Joon with such an innocence. Add Aidan Quinn as her brother, and the two are quite a pair on-screen. Quinn might be a bit cheesy while playing the love scenes (Not necessarily in a good way. You know, the way that makes us hopeless romantics swoon), but his characters interaction with Joon is well portrayed. Of course, the thief of every scene that he is in is Johnny Depp as Sam. It could be very easy to get lost in how creepy it could be for the character of Sam to fall for Joon, since her exact illness is never specified. Depp, however, plays the innocent and unconventional character of Sam in such a way that all the viewer sees is his good intentions and loving heart. Sam doesn’t see Joon for her mental illness, he sees her for her heart. Depp does an amazing job at conveying that message as Sam. Julianne Moore also makes a a fun appearance as Ruthie, ex-actress turned waitress, and the love interest of Benny. To be honest, I think she looks ten times better now than she does in this film. Kudos for aging well!

Since BENNY & JOON was not shot like films today, the blu-ray is not super sharp, but the 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio still looks great for what it is! I think people are just a little too finicky by expecting older films to look just as great as the films of today that are shot in high-def. I am more than happy with the quality. The film also comes with some fun extras such as:

  • Audio Commentary by Jeremiah Chechik
  • 2 Deleted Scenes: One is of Sam’s audition in front of William H. Macy’s character, and the other is the full “Mutilator” B-Movie staring Julianne Moore’s character Ruthie. The only drawback to both of these scenes is that the commentary cannot be turned off.
  • Costume, Make-up Test and Stunt Reel: Shows various lighting and make-up tests with the actors. This is aimed more at those that enjoy learning the technical side to making films.
  • The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” Music Video (RAD!)
  • And of course, the Theatrical Trailer… I love watching older trailers!

OVERALL RATING: 5 out of 5 stars (For the film itself, 4 out of 5 stars for the blu-ray)

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES – Penelope Cruz Honored With Star On Hollywood Walk of Fame

Rob Marshall, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Johnny Depp on hand to celebrate the star of the upcoming “PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES”

In anticipation of the release of her new film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in theaters May 20, 2011, Penelope Cruz received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, April 1, at 11:30 am. in front of the El Capitan Theatre, 6834 Hollywood Boulevard, joined by “On Stranger Tides” co-star Johnny Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall. An Academy Award® winner Penelope Cruz has proven herself to be one of the most versatile actresses by playing a variety of compelling characters, and most recently, becoming the first actress from Spain to be nominated and to win an Oscar®.

First introduced to American audiences in the Spanish films “Jamon, Jamon” and “Belle Epoque,” in 1998 she starred in her first English language film, “The Hi-Lo Country” for director Stephen Frears opposite Woody Harrelson, Patricia Arquette and Billy Crudup. In 1999, Cruz won the Best Actress award at the 13th Annual Goya Awards given by the Spanish Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for her role in Fernando Trueba’s “The Girl of Your Dreams.”

Confirming her status as an international actress, Cruz landed a series of coveted roles. She appeared in Billy Bob Thornton’s “All the Pretty Horses,” Fina Torres’ “Woman on Top,” Alejandro Amenabar’s “Open Your Eyes,” and Maria Ripoli’s “Twice Upon a Yesterday”. Additionally, Cruz co-starred in Pedro Almodovar’s “Live Flesh” and the critically acclaimed “All About My Mother,” which was awarded the Golden Globe® and Oscar® for Best Foreign Film.

Next up for Cruz was a role opposite Johnny Depp in “Blow” for director Ted Demme and “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” opposite Nicolas Cage. After that, Cruz starred opposite Tom Cruise in Cameron Crowe’s thriller “Vanilla Sky.” She then tackled “Masked & Anonymous,” “Fan Fan la Tulipe,” which opened the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, and “Don’t Tempt Me.” She received rave reviews for her performance in “Don’t Move” (“Non ti Muovere”) in which she was honored with a David Di Donatello Award (Italian Oscar) and the European Film Award for Best Actress.

To add to her already diverse choice of film credits, she starred in films including “Gothika,” “Head in the Clouds,” and “Sahara.”

In 2006, Cruz starred in “Volver,” which again teamed her with director and dear friend Pedro Almodovar. Critically-acclaimed for her role as Raimunda, she won the Best Actress awards at the European Film Awards, the Spanish Goya Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and received both Golden Globe® and Oscar® nominations.

Her recent credits include “Elegy” opposite Sir Ben Kingsley and Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” opposite Javier Bardem and Scarlet Johansson. Cruz won an Oscar®, a BAFTA, a New York Film Critics Circle and a National Board of Review award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

In 2009, Cruz and Almodovar were back in action for the fourth time with “Broken Embraces,” for which she again received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Lena. Also that year, she teamed up with “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” director Rob Marshall for the first time and starred alongside Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard in the film version of the musical “Nine.” Her standout portrayal of Carla garnered Screen Actors Guild®, Golden Globe® and Academy Award® nominations. Her third Oscar® nomination made history as it marked only the third time in Oscar history where the winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress was nominated for the same award again in the following year.

Cruz is involved in the following charities: Worldwide (RED) campaign lead by Bono and Bobby Shiver, Artists for Peace and Justice in Haiti (APJ), UNICEF The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). She had the honor of working with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity; volunteering in a leprosy clinic in India and she also worked with the Dalai Lama for the House of Tibet in Spain.

Johnny Depp To Star In FilmDistrict’s THE RUM DIARY On October 28, 2011

It was announced today at CinemaCon, by Bob Berney, President, Theatrical Distribution that FilmDistrict will release THE RUM DIARY, based on the early Hunter S. Thompson novel that was ultimately published in 1998. It stars Johnny Depp and will be released on October 28, 2011. The film is directed by Bruce Robinson (“Withnail and I”) from his own screenplay and also stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi. “The Rum Diary” is produced by Infinitum Nihil, the production company headed by Depp and Christi Dembrowski, along with Graham King and Tim Headington. Anthony Rhulen and Robert Kravis also produce.

“The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s “The Lost Generation,” Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals.  It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

“Hunter S. Thompson became close with Johnny Depp during the filming of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and showed Depp the unpublished manuscript for The Rum Diary,” says producer and FilmDistrict co-founder Graham King. “I am extremely proud to bring this novel to film and to honor Hunter’s legacy.”

Peter Schlessel, CEO of FilmDistrict and President of GK Films, says, “The Rum Diary” is a special project for all of us here, as it is a true collaboration between both of our entities. Depp gives an extraordinary performance in this remarkable adaptation.”

“Robinson directed one of my favorite films, “Withnail and I” – combine that with Hunter S. Thompson and it’s a match made in celluloid heaven,” says Bob Berney, President of Distribution, FilmDistrict.

“The Rum Diary” is a GK Films, Infinitum Nihil and Film Engine production produced by Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, Anthony Rhulen, Robert Kravis, Tim Headington and Graham King.
