Director Bryan Singer In Production On 3D Epic Action Adventure JACK THE GIANT KILLER

Stars Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci,
Ian McShane, Bill Nighy and Ewan McGregor

Burbank, CA, May 27, 2011—Principal photography is underway in London on acclaimed filmmaker Bryan Singer’s 3D epic action adventure JACK THE GIANT KILLER, with Nicholas Hoult in the title role of Jack, for New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures.

JACK THE GIANT KILLER tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Hoult and Singer recently collaborated on the Singer-produced “X-Men: First Class,” for release later this year. JACK THE GIANT KILLER also stars Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle; Stanley Tucci (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Julie & Julia”) as the deceitful Lord Roderick; Ian McShane (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” HBO’s “Deadwood”) as the besieged King Brahmwell; Bill Nighy (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) as the giants’ leader General Fallon; and Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars,” “The Ghost Writer”) as palace guard Elmont.

Singer will direct from a screenplay by Darren Lemke and Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney, story by Darren Lemke & David Dobkin. The film will be produced by Neal Moritz, David Dobkin, Bryan Singer and Patrick McCormick.

The creative filmmaking team includes Singer’s longtime collaborators, director of photography Newton Thomas Sigel (“X-Men,” “Superman Returns”) and editor John Ottman (“X2,” “Superman Returns”). The production designer is Gavin Bocquet (“Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”).

JACK THE GIANT KILLER is filming on location in and around London, and is scheduled for a summer 2012 release.

A New Line Cinema presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Bryan Singer Might be Out of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

I remember it like it was yesterday hearing about director Bryan Singer and how he had announced he would be taking on X-MEN: FIRST CLASS just as soon as he finished work on JACK THE GIANT KILLER.  Well, it appears another giant Jack might be slaying is that dream of another Singer-directed X-MEN movie, as Hitfix is reporting they have it on authority from multiple sources Singer might be off the FIRST CLASS project.

With Singer working on getting JACK THE GIANT KILLER done for Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox isn’t waiting around, and is “actively searching” for a director to step in and take over the next X-MEN film.  Judging from the Hitfix article and a recent interview that ran in the LA Times featuring Singer and Lauren Shuler Donner, it would appear Singer stepping aside as director of FIRST CLASS is an amicable decision.  He could be on board as the film’s producer, or even as producer of the planned WOLVERINE 2.

However, the idea of Singer acting as director of FIRST CLASS seems to be diminishing hope.  That isn’t to say we will never see Singer step behind the camera on another X-MEN movie.  There are always plans to do a fourth film chronologically in the series, something the Hitfix article touches on.  We should know by sometime this Summer what Singer’s next directorial project really is.

D.J. Caruso Helming ‘Dead Space’ Film

dead space

Director D.J. Caruso has been tapped to bring the video game ‘Dead Space’ to cinematic life.   Variety is reporting the ‘Eagle Eye’ director is attached to the project.

Electronic Arts, the company behind the best-selling video game, has been working on producing the film along with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill. They and Caruso have been meeting with screenwriters to see who has the best vision for the film.   Once a screenwriter is set, the consortium of producers will begin auctioning the film off to studios.   With the success of the video game, finding a buyer shouldn’t be an issue.

The story takes place deep in space where an engineer responds to a distress signal.   He soon finds the ship he boards is crawling with all kinds of monstrosities, human corpses that have been brought from the dead from a virus.

While the premise sounds a bit like most other sci-fi/deep space action and horror structures, it will be interesting to see Caruso work with this setting.   He has always brought a slick look to his films, though none of them have been on the level of his first feature, ‘The Salton Sea.’   Caruso also has a lot on his plate with ‘Jack the Giant Killer’ and ‘Y: The Last Man’ in development.

DJ Caruso becomes a ‘Giant Killer’

DJ Caruso (Eagle Eye) has been dubbed thee mighty fantasy filmmaker. Caruso will direct a new telling of ‘Jack the Giant Killer’ for New Line Cinema. He will be working from a screenplay by Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard). The one thing that’s still unknown is, aside from the general storyline, what’s the approach to this film? Will it be live-action, or will it be animated? Will it be reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen classics, or updated in a more ‘300’-esque modern stylized approach? Can Caruso make the leap from contemporary action-thrillers to the mythical lore of old?

The story begins… “when a princess is kidnapped, threatening a long-standing peace between men and giants. A young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing her. Darren Lemke is the original writer.” –HR
