Watch The Trailer For LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, Premiering August 16 On HBO From Producers Misha Green, J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele

From showrunner and executive producer Misha Green, HBO’s new drama series LOVECRAFT COUNTRY debuts Sunday, August 16 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the ten-episode series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

The series stars Jurnee Smollett (“Birds of Prey,” “Underground”), Jonathan Majors (“Da 5 Bloods,” “The Last Black Man in San Francisco”), Aunjanue Ellis (“When They See Us”); Abbey Lee (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Jada Harris (“The Resident”), Wunmi Mosaku (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), and Michael Kenneth Williams (HBO’s “The Wire” and “Boardwalk Empire”). Recurring guests include Courtney B. Vance (HBO’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” “American Crime Story”), Jamie Chung (“Once Upon a Time”), Jamie Neumann (HBO’s “The Deuce”), Jordan Patrick Smith (“Vikings”), and Tony Goldwyn (“Scandal”).

LOVECRAFT COUNTRY is executive produced by Misha Green, J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Bill Carraro, Yann Demange (who also directed Episode 1), Daniel Sackheim (who also directed Episodes 2 and 3) and David Knoller (executive producer on Episode 1); based on the novel by Matt Ruff.

Produced by afemme, Inc., Bad Robot Productions and Monkeypaw Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11, 2011 – Academy Award® winner Steven Soderbergh (“Contagion,” “Traffic,” “Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen”) and Emmy® Award-winning producer Jerry Weintraub (“Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen,” “The Karate Kid” series, HBO’s Emmy®-nominated “His Way”) will bring the film BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, starring Academy Award® winners Michael Douglas (“Wall Street,” “Traffic,” “Solitary Man”) and Matt Damon (“Contagion,” “Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen,” “Invictus”) to HBO Films, it was announced today by Len Amato, president, HBO Films.

Executive produced by Weintraub and produced by Gregory Jacobs (“Contagion,” “The Informant!”) and Susan Ekins (“Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen,” “The Karate Kid” series), BEHIND THE CANDELABRA takes a behind-the-scenes look at the tempestuous relationship between legendary entertainer Liberace and Scott Thorson, his younger live-in lover. Directed by Soderbergh from a script by Oscar® nominee Richard LaGravenese (“Water for Elephants,” “The Fisher King”), the film stars Douglas as Liberace and Damon as Thorson.

“This is a story that’s going to surprise a lot of people,” said Amato. “It’s funny, heartbreaking and always fascinating, and we are delighted that Jerry and Steven brought the film to HBO. With Steven at the helm, directing such accomplished actors as Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, this is a dream project for us.”

Says Weintraub, “I’ve wanted to make a film about Liberace for a very long time, and after the amazing experience I had with HBO on ‘His Way,’ I knew that they were absolutely the right place for this movie. I am thrilled that we have the incomparable Michael Douglas to inhabit the role of Liberace, as well as the exceptional Matt Damon to play the pivotal part of Scott Thorson.

I am thrilled that we have the incomparable Michael Douglas to inhabit the role of Liberace, as well as the exceptional Matt Damon to play the pivotal part of Scott Thorson. Putting these two fine actors in the creative hands of Steven Soderbergh – it doesn’t get better than that!”

“From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it,” says Soderbergh. “HBO’s fearless approach to original programming and their unparalleled ability to pull in viewers make them the perfect fit for us. Apart from my hair growing back, I couldn’t be happier.”

“Richard Plepler and I developed an enormous respect and affection for Jerry when we worked with him on his HBO documentary, and we hoped that it would be the beginning of a long and productive relationship,” says Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “We are extremely excited that he is returning to HBO with this riveting film and sensational array of talent.”

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA will start production in summer 2012, with locations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs. Tara Grace, vice president, development and production, HBO Films, will serve as production executive on the project.

THE SUNSET LIMITED – The Review

THE SUNSET LIMITED, the new original HBO film, premiered recently. The film is a perfect example of effective stage-to-screen adaptation, based upon the stage play of the same name written by Cormac McCarthy, the extraordinary writer responsible for THE ROAD and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

HBO’s adaptation stars Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones as the two nameless characters, Black and White. The initial thought which may come to mind with this casting is a clash of egos, but regardless of the truthfulness of this possibility, the result is far from catastrophic. Both actors have seemingly limitless charisma and onscreen presence, a shared trait which benefits this production greatly.

Written back in 2006, THE SUNSET LIMITED takes place in a single location, a rundown apartment in the slums, where Black has taken White after saving him from an attempted suicide. The title of the play/movie refers to a particular subway train in Brooklyn, a route known as The Sunset Limited, the train in front of which White intended to leap, sending him into silent, peaceful darkness.

Merely by chance, or perhaps by divine intervention, Black is there on the deck to save White from his untimely demise. This becomes the basis of this dialogue-driven film, a philosophical inquiry into the nature of faith, God and the purpose of life. Written with a fervent dialect, precise and calculated yet uncompromisingly organic, I was fully drawn into this intimate conversation.

THE SUNSET LIMITED was also directed by Tommy Lee Jones. I am reminded of Alfred Hitchcock’s ROPE, or LIFEBOAT, two films shot in singular locations, but both films carry an intensity of emotion and suspense that causes one to forget that the setting does not change. In ROPE, Hitchcock designed the film to appear as a single, continuous shot. In THE SUNSET LIMITED, Jones uses multiple cameras, allowing him to maintain optimal connection between the viewer and the actor, allowing us to maintain eye contact with the characters. They say the eyes are the windows to a man’s soul. This couldn’t be more fitting to the theme of this film.

In the beginning, White is a sad, pathetic man; an educated man whom Black refers to as The Professor. I noticed that the overwhelming emotion was to feel sorry for White, given that despite his education and success [as made evident in a bit of dialogue] he finds no joy or cause for happiness in the world. White perceives this existence as dismal, remedied only by the hope for the dark, silent loneliness of death. Black, on the other hand, feels compelled and obliged to hold White in his apartment, engaging in deep conversation regarding White’s actions and intentions. Black is determined to show White the light, bringing his back from the darkness, giving him hope for life and a renewed sense of faith.

What emerges in THE SUNSET LIMITED is a strong and intelligent debate about the very nature of faith and God. What lies beneath the surface is a question of truth, perception and the lengths to which a man’s faith can be stretched. For the first two-thirds of the film, Black is clearly the one leading the conversation, clearly searching, looking for someway to draw White back to the void. An uneducated man, a man of former deviance through his own admission, Black explains how God spoke to him, showing him the light and setting him on his current path to help his fellow brothers. Black feels he simply must find a way to ensure White is ready to reenter the world, before leaving his home.

In the end, as is often the nature of Cormac McCarthy’s writings, THE SUNSET LIMITED takes a decidedly darker turn, revealing the truly frightening side of White that turns Black’s world inside-out. Assisted by an endlessly moving camera and a score that is both subtle and aggressive, Jones makes the absolute most of his single locations, tapping into the actors’ experience and descriptive eyes. While there is an abundance of camera movement, none of which is in excess, Jones also allows the camera to linger when necessary, especially on the actors’ eyes. Engage, observe, react; this is the exchange that occurs repeatedly throughout the film, the two men testing each others’ faiths; one in God, the other in nothingness.

THE SUNSET LIMITED certainly has its underlying tone, a tendency leaning towards the blasphemous, but in truth questions both sides of the debate. Those who feel strong, uncompromising conviction in their faith need view this film cautiously, but need view this film nonetheless. Those who hold their faith in utter certainty have the most to lose, thus testing their faith is an exercise in questioning one’s own perception of belief. For those on the fence, or that of the atheist, this is an intellectually-stimulating journey into a realm of human mystery as old as man himself.

SEX AND THE CITY 2 Poster Short on the Bling

sex and the city 2

Where’s the bracelet?   Where are the rings?   Where are the dangling, pearl earrings to go along with that $850,000 necklace that looks like it could be used by the Mafia to weigh victims down?   There is easily space on this first poster for SEX AND THE CITY 2 to fit a small country’s annual budget worth of jewelry and accessories into.

I’m disappointed HBO and New Line.   You could have spent more.   A giant, sequined 2 and what looks like the Stargate opening up behind it just isn’t cutting it any more for us fans of Carrie and the girls.   Your second movie where you shoehorn more complexities and relationship woes into these girls’ lives is fast approaching.   Now is not the time to get wholesale on your marketing.   When Samantha’s character poster comes out, I want my retinas to burn.   I want so much glitz and glamor coming off that poster that any bird flying within two feet of it will immediately burst into flames.   That’s what I demand.

The poster comes courtesy of Imp Awards.   SEX AND THE CITY 2 hits theaters on May 28th, 2010.

Show to Check Out: ‘Bored to Death’

bored-to-death

A show about a man struggling at the job he knows best until he gets a phone call not meant for him, a phone call from a woman who mistakes his number for that of a private eye.   And what can this man do otherwise but pretend to be a private eye and solve cases with the help of his goofy and hindering friends.   Though this may sound familiar to some, and I do mean some, as it is almost about the same as the Andy Richter starring Andy Barker P.I. that had a short run on NBC a few years ago.   But fortunately for this show it boasts a bit of a more upscale cast as well as being on HBO where more adult like situations can run rampant and cursing is almost a requirement.

The show stars Jason Schwartzman, a struggling writer come hapless investigator, and from the trailer that is available on the HBO website it looks like it could be a little darling of a show.   From what is viewable from the trailer it looks like a good, quirky show that of course has to be set in New York.   And even though that becomes the typical back drop for most crime shows it definitely looks like they infuse some good old Woody Allen spirit into it.   It also looks to be paying tribute to old detective books as he hangs out in the shadows of New York and has to deal with his fair share of femme fatales.   Which they look to have some decent talent with Kristen Wiig and Parker Posey popping up somewhere along in the season.

As for the encumbering and necessary sidekicks they’ve brought in some decent talent with Ted Danson as Schwartzman’s magazine editor who finds out what he’s doing and insists on tagging along.   And for all those Hangover fans out there we have none other than the rising comic star himself Zach Galifinakis as a comic book illustrator and close friend of Schwartzman’s character.   They both look like they will be pretty funny additions to the show.   If you want to know more about the show definitely head over to HBO and check out the trailer and there’s actually a decent blog by the creator, Jonathan Ames, that sheds more light on the show and how the main character is based a lot off of him so it’s worth a check out.   As for the show, it will premiere September 20th at 9:30 on HBO so check it and give it some support and love.

Review: ‘Entourage’ Season 6 Episode 2

It’s almost tradition in Entourage to have an episode about Vince’s new movie premier. This time around it’s for “Scorsese’s Gatsby”, which everyone in the show is calling Vince’s best work yet. The episode doesn’t really accomplish a whole lot or push much story forward but it does give some of the guys great moments. Turtle and Jamie-Lynn are officially stepping out as a public couple, Sloan and E are still sort of a couple and of course Vinnie can get any woman in the world and has the best movie he’s done in years.

The biggest piece of drama comes when Ari learns his new partner might be having an affair with one of the many agents at the Miller-Gold office. This of course can bring down an entire angency if a sexual harassment lawsuit is presented. It’s amazing how many scruples a jerk like Ari can have when it comes to his business and keeping it all in tip top condition.

The only other real piece of plot involves E’s new neighbor Ashley having a crush on him. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but E and Sloan obviously still have feelings and E is claiming that he wants to stay single for a while. It could get complicated. Alexis Dziena plays Ashley and I honestly can’t stand her. I think it has somethign to do with how she looks, but here she’s also playing an annoying stalker type character, who dresses horribly and is very rude.

Review: ‘Entourage’ Season 6 Episode 1

entouragereview

It’s been a year since we last saw the boys of Entourage and it seems that time has been kind to them. Vince has a good movie under his belt for the first time in a long time, Drama is still a cast member on a hit TV show, Turtle is some how still dating Jamie-Lynn Sigler and E has been getting lucky with several girls, but still holds a candle for his old girlfriend Sloan.

The episode is all about growth, and I’m sure the entire season will be as well. Ari is working with his new partner, but now Lloyd wants a promotion. E hasn’t been away from Vince since they moved out to LA together but Sloan tries to push him to sublet a house from her friend, Drama has moved out long ago, and Turtle is always spending the night at Jamie-Lynn’s place. If E actually moves into this place, it’ll leave Vince all alone in the house that they first bought years ago (whic they had moved back into during the off season).

The episode is good with a few good laughs, but mostly sets up the ideas of what the next season is going to be about. Vince’s real growth is that finally, at nearly the age of thirty, he’s getting his Driver’s license. This really shows that he truly is a man-boy with zero real responsibility. He doesn’t know how to live a grown up life. There are also subtle hints that Ari’s new partner may start to drag him down a bit.

This is far from the strongest writing we’ve seen on the series, but it’s a nice change. Seeing the boys all on truly different life paths is kind of nice. It really makes me think that this could be the last year we see Vince and the crew together. Vince’s new film about Enzo Ferrari is pretty cool too. Here’s hoping we see some sweet cars.

HBO Might Have a Winner with ‘Bored to Death’

schwartzmanboredtodeath

The show will star Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis who are both incredibly funny, if you throw in Ted Danson you might have a real winner here. This is the premise for the show which starts in September:

The Jonathan Ames-penned “Bored” centers on Jonathan (Schwartzman), a struggling thirtysomething writer with a drinking problem in Brooklyn who, following a painful breakup with his girlfriend, decides to emulate his heroes from the novels of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.

Watch the teaser below and tell me what you guys think..this sounds like a winner to me but I love everything Schwartzman touches.
