“Where are they? Where are your friends now? Tell me about the loneliness of good, He-Man. Is it equal to the loneliness of evil?”

MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE starring Dolph Lundgren as ‘He-Man’ wasn’t given a chance back when it was released in 1987 simply because it was based on a toy. Nowadays, with big-budget epics based on video games and other playthings (TRANSFORMERS, LEGOS, BATTLESHIP)being a common occurrence, you’d think people would be a bit more open-minded. It’s true that MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE really is a low-budget movie from the exploitation kings over at Cannon Films, but it did a great job stretching its meager funds into a very elaborate fantasy look. The production design by William Stout is fabulous and Gary Goddard’s direction is quite stylish. Bill Conti’s music score is especially noteworthy — one of the better fantasy-adventure scores of the era. Skeletor’s prosthetic make-up takes a bit of getting used to but Frank Langella plays him like he was doing Richard III at the Old Vic! There’s not an ounce of the tiresome eye-rolling which most “legitimate” actors feel compelled to introduce into these types of roles (think Peter O’Toole in SUPERGIRL). I was already a grown-up when I saw this at the 66 Drive-In and had never seen the cartoon, so I took it at face value as a stand-alone film. The decision to set most of the picture on earth (which I’m told was done for budgetary reasons) actually gives MASTERS a nice TARZAN’S NEW YORK ADVENTURE- quality that I find quite appealing. All in all, I think this is one of the better STAR WARS imitations that came out in the 80s and will make for a very entertaining night at the movies when it screens this Wednesday night at Schlafly Bottleworks

DRAFT DAY – The Blu Review

draftday_trailer_gs

When Michael Haffner reviewed DRAFT DAY here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote: “DRAFT DAY still serves as a carefree way to get through a Sunday afternoon until the 2014 football season kicks off. A few late in the game twists will make audiences cheer and seeing Costner act as a capable leader for the whole team makes DRAFT DAY an easy win for football fans.” – read all of Michael’s review HERE)

DRAFT DAY

I missed DRAFT DAY on the big screen but just caught up with it on Blu-ray courtesy of the folks at Lionsgate. I was less enthused than Michael. The title doesn’t lie. This film is all about the NFL draft and draft day to a mind-numbing degree. It’s a real ‘inside baseball’ look at the process but I suspect most folks who are not fans of the NFL will find their eyes just glazing over early on. They tried to hammer father/mother and relationship issues in to Kevin Costner’s Sonny Weaver character along the way but it feels tacked on, as if the producers pulled the writer aside and forced it in to the script after it was finished. Weaver’s peripheral romance with Jennifer Garner’s executive lawyer is dull and pointless, as are the conversations with his opinionated mother (Ellen Burstyn). In the lead, Costner remains in the kind of laid-back mode he’s gotten away with in the past, but now just seems lethargic, barely commanding the screen at all. It’s clear that the NFL was in full support of this movie but that spun in to an almost propaganda type cooperation. DRAFT DAY does get somewhat intriguing as the minutes tick down to the televised event the film’s named after, but on balance, DRAFT DAY is one long ESPN/NFL commercial with no depth.

DRAFT DAY

However, hardcore sports fans seemed to have enjoyed it.

Paul Salfen at Fox Sports wrote:

“Kevin Costner is the king of great sports movies. DRAFT DAY is another winner!”

And Verron Haynes, an NFL Running Back said the movie is:

“Masterfully entertaining and completely electrifying. A must-see!”

Draft-Day-Movie-Review-Image-2

DRAFT DAY comes to Blu-ray Disc from LionsGate Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that is impeccably sharp and well detailed, offering sweeping panoramics of football fields and offices, delivering excellent fine detail in midrange and close-up shots (several close-ups of Costner are almost unforgiving in revealing the increasingly deep crags in the actor’s face). Colors are generally very accurate looking and frequently pop nicely aided by strong, consistent contrast.

The quality of the audio can be noticed in the scenes with newsrooms, meeting rooms, and overlapping dialog. The track proves impressive for the movie’s many smaller character-driven moments. Like the video, the audio here is quite impressive, and also earns a reference-quality score.

Bonus Features:

–  (HD) On the clock: The making of Draft Day (2 segments totaling 59 minutes)

–  (HD) Welcome to Prime Time – 9 minute featurette

–  Filmmaker audio commentary featuring writers Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman

–  (HD) 5 deleted scenes totaling 8 minutes

–  (HD) Theatrical trailer

–  Bonus DVD

–  Digital HD Copy

Here’s a special clip that’s a nice summary of  Costner’s many sports films:

Though I didn’t care much for DRAFT DAY, it’s a film that seems to know its audience and relishes in the details of the business of sports, and a certain type of sports junkie may find a lot to enjoy.

DRAFT DAY Arrives on Blu-ray & DVD September 2nd & Digital HD August 19th

When Michael Haffner reviewed DRAFT DAY here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote: “A sign of a good sports film is if the audience enthusiastically cheers during a film like a crowd at a live sporting event. That’s exactly what happened when I went to see Ivan Reitman’s DRAFT DAY. The theater was into every second as the film counted down the minutes to the big event.” (Read the rest of Michael’s review HERE)

Adapted from award-winning author Tom Drury’s novel of the same title, THE DRIFTLESS AREA will be directed by Zachary Sluser, who co-wrote the screenplay with Drury.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin on May 14th in greater Vancouver.

The film is being produced by Keith Kjarval, through his Unified Pictures production/finance banner and Aaron L. Gilbert, via Bron Studios, in association with CW Media Finance. Nicole Romano at Anonymous Content manages Sluser and is Executive Producer on the film.

“Frank Langella is a powerful character actor who elevates every project he is associated with and lights up the screen with his effortless acting skills. As such, he is a welcome addition to THE DRIFTLESS AREA cast as the film begins production,” said Steinbauer.

Said Kjarval, “I’ve admired Frank and his work for a long time and view his onscreen presence as immeasurable, so bringing him into ‘The Driftless Area’ is truly exciting. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the rounding out of this great cast.”
