Learn more about the real heroes of LONE SURVIVOR in this new video, featuring interviews from writer/director Peter Berg and Marcus Luttrell, along with the families of the real-life SEAL team members portrayed in the film.

Universal Pictures will release LONE SURVIVOR in select LA/ NY theaters on Christmas Day – everywhere on January 10, 2014.

In case you missed it, Mark Wahlberg was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE on Tuesday night and spoke about the film.

In early December I had the privilege of hosting Air Force and Navy Servicemen, along with their guests, at a special screening of the upcoming film at a local St. Louis theater.

All the officers’ reactions were very positive after seeing it and agreed that the film was really great and stayed true to the book. I am very grateful for what our military does for us on a daily basis and it was an honor to watch the movie them.

So my job is done. Mission complete.”

I like war films – always have.

Having seen LONE SURVIVOR in November, I can tell you it’s one of the finest additions to the genre and one of the best films of 2013.

The experience of what these men endured on their mission will have you in tears by the end of the movie. Director Peter Berg truly respects and honors these men with a realistic, timeless and isolated portrait of the sacrifices that one small band of warriors made… and how one survived to tell their tale.

In November, we showed you the first trailer and images from the film.

Here’s the latest TV spot and brand new photos.

Based on The New York Times bestselling true story of heroism, courage and survival, LONE SURVIVOR tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative who are ambushed by the enemy in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Faced with an impossible moral decision, the small band is isolated from help and surrounded by a much larger force of Taliban ready for war. As they confront unthinkable odds together, the four men find reserves of strength and resilience as they stay in the fight to the finish.

A total of 11 SEALs and 8 soldiers perished on that mountain. This day is forever marked in our history, as it became the biggest single loss of life for Naval Special Warfare forces since World War II, until August 6, 2011, when a U.S. Boeing CH-47 Chinook military helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan and 30 U.S. military personnel and 8 Afghans were killed.

Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor

On June 28, 2005, a four-man reconnaissance and surveillance team – Lieutenant Michael Patrick “Murph” Murphy, Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell, Sonar Technician (Surface) Second Class Petty Officer Matthew Gene “Axe” Axelson, Gunner’s Mate Second Class Danny P. Dietz, Jr.  – boarded a helicopter for insertion into a remote mountainous region in Kunar province, near the Pakistan border. Their mission, code name Operation Red Wings, was to identify Ahmad Shah, a key Taliban leader believed to be hiding out in the mountainous terrain and responsible for the deaths of many American service members.

Although Murphy, Dietz, Axelson and Luttrell — under the command of Lieutenant Commander Erik S. Kristensen — coordinated a successful infiltration into the region, three goatherders grazing their flock stumbled upon the men’s hiding place and plunged the mission into immediate jeopardy. The SEALs knew it was time to abort. Protocol dictated that they release the civilian noncombatants, but were they to do so, they knew that it could be mere minutes before word reached the numerous Taliban fighters that Americans were up the mountain.

After a discussion of the rules of war, the SEALs saw that they only had three choices: kill the three civilians to prevent them from disclosing the location to the Taliban; tie them up and leave them on the mountain, where they would surely die due to the dropping temperatures; or set them free and make their own way to a communications zone and pickup. Ultimately, the civilians were cut loose, and the SEALs began an arduous climb to what they hoped to be safety.

Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor

Soon, hellfire rained down upon them. The Taliban assault—an intense firefight from PK machine guns, AK-47s, RPG-7s and 82 mm mortars—came quickly and relentlessly from three sides. Nothing the elite SEALs had experienced could have prepared them for what came next: They were outgunned by a much larger enemy force and driven deeper and deeper into the treacherous terrain.
Tragically, Murphy, Dietz and Axelson were killed on that mountain, alongside their would-be rescuers—those manning a Night Stalker MH-47D Chinook helicopter that was attempting to save the four SEALs. The helicopter was taken down by rocket-propelled grenade fire from the Taliban forces, and those aboard perished.

The lives of 16 Special Operations Forces including 8 other Navy SEALs — Kristensen, Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey S. Taylor, Petty Officer Second Class James E. Suh, Chief Petty Officer Jacques J. Fontan, Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey A. Lucas, Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel R. Healy, Lieutenant Michael M. McGreevy, Jr., and Petty Officer Second Class Shane E. Patton—and 8 Army Night Stalkers—Major Stephen C. Reich, Sergeant First Class Michael L. Russell, Chief Warrant Officer Christopher J. Scherkenbach, Master Sergeant James “Tre” W. Ponder, III, Sergeant Kip A. Jacoby, Sergeant First Class Marcus V. Muralles, Staff Sergeant Shamus O. Goare and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Corey J. Goodnature — were lost on that fateful day.

Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor

Because of the actions of his fellow men, Luttrell—although gravely wounded—evaded the enemy fighters and crawled miles to safety. Once again, however, Afghan civilians stumbled upon his hiding place. This time, he was more fortunate. A Pashtun villager named Gulab discovered Luttrell nearly dead—where the petty officer first class lay with a torn shoulder, facial fractures, broken back and pelvis and bullet holes that had riddled his body.

Gulab, whose tribe lives by the ancient code of the Pashtunwali—one that dates back to the pre-Islamic era—that dictates aid for a person in dire need from his enemies, was unblinking in his decision to take Luttrell into his home. At great risk to himself, his family and fellow villagers, Gulab defied the Taliban warlord Shah and hid the American soldier until he could be returned safely to his base.

Lone Survivor

Miraculously, Luttrell was finally located by American forces and brought to safety. Through courage, perseverance, the kindness of strangers and the ultimate sacrifice of his brother SEALs under the most extreme conditions, Luttrell is alive today with one mission: to share their story.

Luttrell says: “It’s about brotherhood, and about no matter how bad it gets or what happens to you, you keep fighting just to protect the guy next to you until the minute you die. You need to go through something like that to understand the capacity to which someone will go to give their life for somebody else. Most people wouldn’t do that. That’s what it resorted to: It went from hunting this guy down to protecting each other until the very end.”

Lone Survivor is written and directed by PETER BERG, who again crafts a striking portrait of the unbreakable bonds between men that he first explored in Friday Night Lights. Based on the book “Lone Survivor” by retired Petty Officer First Class MARCUS LUTTRELL with PATRICK ROBINSON, the film tells the dramatic story of how a single decision resulted in unimaginable consequences for these SEALs and the fellow servicemen who tried to rescue them.

Win A Pass To The Advance Screening of CLOSED CIRCUIT In St. Louis

ClosedCircuit-OneSht

In the international suspense thriller CLOSED CIRCUIT, a high-profile terrorism case unexpectedly binds together two ex-lovers on the defense team – testing the limits of their loyalties and placing their lives in jeopardy.

One morning, a busy London market is decimated by an explosion. In the manhunt that follows, only one member of the suspected terrorist cell survives: Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), who is arrested and jailed. Preparations begin for what promises to be the trial of the century.

But there’s a hitch: the government will use classified evidence to prosecute Erdogan, evidence so secret that neither he nor his lawyers can be allowed to see it. Hence the need for the Attorney General (Jim Broadbent) to appoint a Special Advocate, an additional government-approved defense lawyer (Claudia Simmons-Howe, played by Golden Globe Award nominee Rebecca Hall), one who has clearance to see classified evidence and who can argue for its full disclosure when the trial moves to “closed” session. The rules for the Special Advocate are clear: once the secret evidence is shared with her, Claudia will not be allowed to communicate even with the defendant or with other members of the defense team.

But just as the case is on the eve of going to trial, Erdogan’s lawyer dies suddenly, and a new defense attorney, Martin Rose (Eric Bana), quickly steps in. Martin is tenacious, driven, brilliant – and an ex-lover of Claudia’s. The two lawyers make an uncomfortable pact to keep their former affair hidden. But as Martin begins to piece the case together, the outlines of a sinister conspiracy emerge, one that will draw him and Claudia dangerously close again.

The film stars Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciarán Hinds, Riz Ahmed, Anne-Marie Duff, Kenneth Cranham, Denis Moschitto, Julia Stiles, and Jim Broadbent,

Tribeca 2012 Review: DEADFALL

DEADFALL is bound to get comparisons to FARGO. With a few minor script tweaks and slightly different accents, this could have been passed off as a direct to DVD sequel. It is not that there are any similar characters or storylines but more so in the look and feel of the film. Had this been FARGO 2, I’d call it a worthy successor although I’m sure others will want my head on a platter (or my body in a woodchipper) for saying that. Prior to seeing the film, I heard some strongly negative feedback and was even told to avoid it completely by someone who attended an earlier press screening. Since then I’ve noticed a slew of negative reviews calling it an absolute mess and much worse. Honestly, I don’t know why everyone is ranking on this film so much because I loved the hell out of it.

DEADFALL opens with a car crash. Addison (Eric Bana) and his sister Liza (Olivia Wilde) make it out alive but their driver is not so lucky. Addison kills the first cop on the scene while Liza stuffs a bag full of the scattered money they just stole from a casino. They decide to split up as they each attempt to make it across the border. Addison ends up killing his way through the woods and Liza uses her looks to secure a ride with Jay (Charlie Hunnum) to his family’s cabin near the border. It is Thanksgiving and he is going to see his mom (Sissy Spacek) and dad (Kris Kristofferson) despite their strained relationship. Problem is Jay just got out of prison and may have accidentally killed a former business partner who refused to give him the money he owes. Addison faces some obstacle himself with the police after him investigating the murder of the trooper he killed. Despite the wishes of her father / police chief  (Treat Williams), among the search party is the very capable Hanna (Kate Mara) who just so happens to be old friends with Jay and his family.

Believe it or not, there are even more side stories and important characters that I’ve chosen to excise for time. Yes, the film is convoluted. Yes, it has moments of needless complications and mass coincidence. Yes, it can be a bit campy and has heavy-handed moments that feel a bit forced. Yes, the fairly incestuous relationship between Addison and Liza is a bit weird. Yes, the insanely sexist attitudes within Hana’s police department feel horribly outdated. Yes, I’m starting to see why some people didn’t like this film after typing all that.

But none of that really matters because DEADFALL is damn fun. And the single biggest aspect that will suck you in and keep you watching no matter how ridiculous things get is Eric Bana. If this film came out before KNOCKED UP, this would be the movie they were all toasting to in the nightclub. Eric Bana’s performance is brilliantly twisted and wildly unhinged without ever going too far over the top. Addison is a badass who does some truly awful things with a wink and a smile. The film has plenty of other great things going for it like some wonderful visuals, thrilling action set pieces, the beautiful Kate Mara, and unnecessary Olivia Wilde nudity. But the only real reason you need is ERIC F***ING BANA!

Tribeca 2012 Daily Recap: April 26th

Today was a fairly solitary experience at Tribeca. No industry cocktails or drinks with filmmakers. Just 3 films, a few press lounge pitstops for free Magnum ice cream and a few moments of conversation with Jeremy Wein from ThisMyShow.net.

ANY DAY NOW may have a story that seems fitting for a Lifetime Movie of the Week but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a incredibly well crafted film full of surprisingly powerful performances. Despite being set in the late 70s, it shares an important message that is still relevant today. The film never feels too heavy-handed and has some funny comedic beats sprinkled throughout. While it didn’t get my tear ducts flowing, quite a few people left the theater with tissues in hand so it appears I was not the only one moved by it. With less than 5 minutes until my next screening, I went straight to the next film. I had originally planned to see JACK & DIANE but after hearing some less than stellar critiques, I opted for something a little more light-hearted.

LOLA VERSUS is the story of Lola (Greta Gerwig) who is dumped by her fiancé right before her wedding so she sleeps with a couple of guys and bitches about love while trying to find herself. I am oversimplifying it but this is a perfect example of the type of comedies I complained about yesterday. The film is entertaining but it just felt like everyone was trying way too hard. While some of the dialogue is genuinely witty, other moments felt completely forced. I am a huge fan of pop culture references in dialogue (as known by anyone who has seen any of my work) but it needs to fit naturally into the conversation or it runs into the danger of coming across as a desperate attempt to seem hip. Overall, the film had a general feeling that it was made by indie-minded creatives trying to appeal to both mainstream and arthouse audiences. In my opinion, some of it worked but more of it didn’t.

Regardless of the film, I would like to commend Daryl Wein on his passion for the project. He apparently showed up to the press screening for a Q & A which I’ve never heard of anyone actually doing for press. Unfortunately, it was not announced and nearly everyone was already gone so he just left. It is too bad because I would have been interested in hearing what he had to say and possibly chatting with him about the film. If it is any consolation Daryl, I once did a Q & A via Skype for my film STUCK LIKE CHUCK where only 3 people stayed after the film. Yeah, that probably doesn’t change anything. I still commend him for the effort. Following the screening and a super quick lunch at my new favorite TFF dining establishment, 2 Bros. Pizza, I rushed back to Chelsea Clearview Cinemas for my final film of the day.

DEADFALL is bound to get comparisons to FARGO. With a few minor script tweaks and slightly different accents, this could have been passed off as FARGO 2. It is not that there are any similar characters or storylines but more so in the look and feel of the film. This is not a criticism but merely an observation. In fact, if this were FARGO 2, I would call it a pretty worthy follow-up. It is fast-paced, witty, and beautifully twisted. Eric Bana gives a stunning performance as truly compelling villain. Some fellow press members told me that the film was not worth my time but it ended up being one of my favorites of the festival so far.

Lesson of the DAY: We press people don’t know shit sometimes… Also, when the hell did Bill Pullman get so old?
