DON PEYOTE – The Review

DON_P_257-600x337

For the sake of full disclosure, I would like to begin by declaring that I am not now, nor have I ever been, a participant of the pot smoking culture. Why am I declaring this, you may ask? Simple. This movie is, essentially, all about smoking pot. Wonderful. Another DAZED & CONFUSED you say? Wrong. With that said, DON PEYOTE is also much more, but the weed certainly plays a major role.

Please, do not misinterpret my opening remarks. I hold no personal or political grudge against anyone for partaking in this extra-curricular activity. I only bring it up to make a point, as indulging in the great green pastime may certainly influence how the film is experienced. So, as you read this review, keep in mind these are merely the opinions of a critic who was not under the influence during the viewing.

In so many ways, watching DON PEYOTE is like watching Terry Gilliam’s FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, only a bit more insane and with a definite indie flair. Instead of the central character being a gonzo journalist who thrives on anarchy, Warren is a struggling graphic novelist who thrives on paranoia. Both characters share a relentless taste for getting high, but after doing so, Warren delves into the colorful world of conspiracy theory, sinking deeper into its crippling grasp with each hit on his improvised apple bowl.

I’m sure you can already sense what’s in store with this film. Whatever you’re thinking, you’re not wrong. Or, you are. It all depends on how far removed from reality you currently claim to be. That, my friend, best describes DON PEYOTE and how best to determine where you may stand at the film’s completion. Just food for thought. Beware, and enjoy.

DON PEYOTE is about Warren, played by Dan Fogler, who fills the unknown void in his life with marijuana. He enjoys a relatively modest life, albeit with a borderline career and a relationship built on an unstable footing. His fiance wants a child, but fails to recognize she’s about to marry one, then when she does finds Warren completely surprised by her willingness to abandon their bond. Warren surrounds himself with friends, all of whom are equally out of touch and similarly self-destructive on a subconscious level, as he makes his way through this psychotic warm and fuzzy trip.

Let me stop you here, before we go any further. If you’re seeking a clearly structured, linear film with a concise story in three simple acts and a well-defined, low mess ending… turn around. Just, stop. Go home. Give up now. These things, you will not receive. DON PEYOTE, more or less, breaks all the rules of conventional filmmaking, but does so with such energy and bravado. The film appeals to just about every genre. Comedy, drama, mystery, horror… it even has a musical number.

DON PEYOTE is many things, but it is not a low-budget half-ass mockery designed only to get your money. Well, actually, it is, but the difference is that Fogler’s film delivers instead of just luring you in and then letting you down. The cast alone is as amazing as it is overwhelmingly surprising. Each moment of the film is like finding one prize after another, all within the same box of Cracker Jacks!

Allow me to elaborate. Anne Hathaway. Need I say more? Fine. Anne as a mysterious dream agent. Not hooked yet? Josh Duhamel returns* along side Dan Fogler. [*Please refer to SCENIC ROUTE (2013).] Jay Baruchel plays a drug dealer. Topher Grace plays Fogler’s agent, that’s right. Fogler, not Warren. (See the film for clarification.) Wallace Shawn plays Warren’s psychotherapist. Abel Ferrara plays a taxi driver… alright, this one’s not much of a stretch, but still… Abel Ferrara!

Perhaps my favorite moments in the film occur once Warren is committed. Mentally, not emotionally. For an indie film, DON PEYOTE has some incredibly imaginative imagery and the production value follows suit without straying from the indie core of the film’s appeal. Fogler is clearly having fun with this film, but worked extremely hard at making it so. Aside from starring as the cuddly, yet troubled central character, Dan Fogler also co-wrote and co-directed DON PEYOTE with Michael Conzoniero. Fogler is so confident with his vision that he frequently breaks the fourth wall, addressing the audience directly. Ballsy.

Fogler himself, as an actor and comedian, I am beginning to see him as something of a modern-day Chaplin. Talented, funny and smart, hard working and yet playfully driven. That’s impressions I get from watching his work, but DON PEYOTE really gets to the heart of this notion for me. The film oozes pet project, a labor of love. These are the kinds of films I love to see being made. Kudos, Mr. Fogler.

Personally, I enjoyed the frantic, disjointed nature of this film. I was refreshed by the utter lack of accurate expectations I had for DON PEYOTE, but with that may come a limit to its adoring audience and to the level of its viewers’ understanding. Try and look past this, if you will. Live a little. Enjoy the ride.Warren is a character that endures a lot of chemically-induced hardships for your entertainment.

DON PEYOTE is available through Video On Demand and opens theatrically on Friday, May 16th, 2014.

Dan Fogler Talks DON PEYOTE + Secret Projects

don_peyote_dan_fogler_mental_hospital

Two weeks ago I posted the first part of my most recent interview with Dan Fogler, which you can check out right HERE. In that video, we mostly talked about his graphic novel MOON LAKE which is available now for anyone looking for a last minute Christmas gift. I promised there was more and I wasn’t kidding. After going through 40+ minutes of footage, here is part 2 in which I chat with Fogler about several upcoming projects including DON PEYOTE, Kyle Newman’s BARELY LETHAL & his hope for a FANBOYS 2.

As you may remember from previous articles, DON PEYOTE is Fogler’s second film behind the camera and stars himself along with a ton of great celebrity cameos including Anne Hathaway, Josh Duhamel, Topher Grace, and Jay Baruchel.  Having seen a nearly finished cut of this psychotic acid trip of a film, I cannot wait for it to be unleashed upon the world. But until then, this video will have to do…

While chatting, Dan also gave us a very exclusive brief sneak peak at a super secret project that he is working on. It is so secret that it had to be put in a second video just in case the powers that be make us take it down. I’ve already had to blur out some of the clip he shows us. Dan refused to give me any hard details and swore me to secrecy on the little bit he did divulge. All I can say is that he is working with some awesome people on it and it may involve a fair bit of action. Enjoy!

NYCC 12: Saturday & Sunday Recap

Shockingly, I arrived for my second day at NYCC with enough time to walk around the convention a bit before my first & only scheduled interview for the weekend. I didn’t mention it in yesterday’s coverage because I wanted it to be a surprise but one of the reasons I headed home early after NYCC yesterday was to watch THE BAY. Why did I need to see this flick you may ask? Because my roundtable today was with the legendary Barry Levinson, director of THE BAY as well as some other flicks you might have heard of like RAIN MAN, DINER, and SPHERE. Speaking with him was an incredible experience and I will have a full recap of the roundtable posted soon.

At the roundtable I ran into Mike Spring of DVDSnapshot.com, who I first met at the convention a few years back. We chatted for a bit before I once again made my way to the show floor. Seeing the massive wait at the IGN theater and the general overcrowding of NYCC, I decided it would be best to skip the panels since they were going to be live-streamed anyway for anyone interested in checking them out. I also assumed they would be made available afterwards although that seems not to be the case, at least not officially.

While passing the Magnet Releasing booth, I saw that director Glenn McQuaid was signing posters for VHS. I stuck around for a few minutes to get a really quick interview, which you can check out right here:

After some more aimless roaming of the overcrowded show floor, I stopped by the Archaia Comics booth to say hi to our good friend Dan Fogler (FANBOYS, BALLS OF FURY). We talked about setting up an interview in about 2 weeks to discuss DON PEYOTE, as well as a plethora of other projects he is working on.

My Sunday at NYCC consisted of more of the same; navigating my way through waves of costumed fans eager to throw down hard-earned cash. The one exception being the hour or so I sat down for a panel. My first and only for this year was an impromptu panel hosted by Sean Astin, which was created last minute thanks to a petition he himself started. He was one of those people with a decent-sized line of fans waiting to meet him the past three days in the autograph area.

Watching Sean Astin take command of the whole room, telling incredibly detailed and personal stories about his entire career, I gained a newfound respect for the man. Unfortunately the panel ran long and I was unable to interview him afterwards as I had discussed with whoever was assisting him for the day. Shortly after, security began their “hard close” of the convention and I was yelled at for not exiting promptly.

WAMG Sneaks A Peek At Dan Fogler’s DON PEYOTE

18 months ago Dan Fogler broke the news to us about his new film DON PEYOTE. 6 months ago he gave us a little update. Last week I finally got to see it. Well, most of it. The film is currently unfinished with 10 shooting days left and a handful of special effects that need to be added. For obvious reasons, this should not be considered a review of the film.

DON PEYOTE tells the story Warren Allman (played by Fogler), an unemployed stoner who finally finds a purpose in life after an unpleasant encounter with a homeless man preaching the end is near. Fueled by vivid apocalyptic dreams, Warren becomes obsessed with 2012 doomsday theories and decides to make a documentary on the subject while his fiancé is busy planning their wedding.

The film expertly weaves together a narrative storyline, Warren’s increasingly bizarre dream sequences and documentary footage. Many of the documentary elements are real interviews with people like Daniel Pinchbeck with Fogler in character. There are also some staged interviews such as Warren interviewing his friend’s drug dealer, played perfectly by Jay Baruchel in a quick cameo. Speaking of cameos, Anne Hathaway & Wallace Shawn both pop in for funny but all too short roles.

The brilliance of the film is that no matter how ridiculous the theories are, every character plays it straight so it is up to the audience to either laugh at or embrace the ideas presented on screen. Personally, I laughed. So did most of the audience. There are some absolutely hysterical scenes starting off with the opening sequence. I cannot wait to see it with the special effects added in because it is a truly unique and hilarious way to kick off this film.

Fogler likes to call his directorial debut HYSTERICAL PYSCHO “rock n’ roll Hitchcock on acid” which is a fairly accurate description. If he wants to continue the same motif for DON PEYOTE, I’d like to suggest “rock n’ roll Woody Allen.” Hopefully things come together quickly for this film because it will be a juggernaut on the festival circuit when it is finally finished.

Until then, you can stay updated by liking the Facebook fan page HERE or following the man himself on Twitter at @MrDanFogler.

WAMG Exclusive: Dan Fogler Talks New Film & Graphic Novel

Recently, I posted an interview with Dan Fogler (Fanboys, Balls of Fury) about his Atom.com webseries M’LARKY. The first season just ended (Watch HERE) so I thought I’d post some of the other cool stuff Dan mentioned during our interview.

In the video below, Dan breaks the news about his new film DON PEYOTE. This is his second feature as a writer/director but unlike HYSTERICAL PSYCHO Dan also stars in this one. After the interview, I got to see some footage from the film and it is going to surprise you. This is a very different role for Dan and his comparison to Woody Allen is spot on. The film also has some rather surprising cameos by Jay Baruchel and Anne Hathaway. They are still deep in production on this but I have no doubt that this is going to be one very interesting flick.

Dan also gave us a quick update on the status of HYSTERICAL PSYCHO. I’ve seen the film a few times now and it really is a fantastic EVIL DEAD style horror comedy. The film will hopefully be coming out this October, along with a graphic novel based on the film’s main location. Here’s a quick video of what Dan had to say about the film and the MOON LAKE graphic novel.

And here are two pages of artwork from it: (Warning: The second image is VERY GRAPHIC)

BLACK BEAR BLUES

DESENSITIZED DEIRDRE

I think the artwork is incredible; how about you? Which of Dan’s upcoming projects are you most excited about?
