12 YEARS A SLAVE Big Winner at 29th Film Independent Spirit Awards

Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, handed out top honors to 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska at this afternoon’s 29th Film Independent Spirit Awards. Blue Jasmine, Fruitvale Station, Blue is the Warmest Color, Short Term 12, This is Martin Bonner and 20 Feet from Stardom also received awards at the ceremony, which is held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.

Comedian Patton Oswalt was this year’s host.

Highlights include: The first ever award delivered via Wild Rabbit’s state-of-the-art drone. Mid-show Patton also received multiple motivational messages via Skype from Sarah Silverman, Reggie Watts, Weird Al Yankovic and… his parents. Also showcased during the ceremony, the Indie-izer, Patton’s newly developed app that turns anyHollywood big budget film into an indie film.

The Spirit Awards were the first event to exclusively honor independent film, and over the past 29 years, has become the premier awards show for the independent film community, celebrating films made by filmmakers who embody independence and originality.

This year’s major category winners were 12 Years a Slave, which won Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Female and Best Cinematography and Dallas Buyers Club, which won Best Supporting Male and Best Male Lead; Fruitvale Station which won Best First Feature and Nebraska, which won Best First Screenplay; Blue Jasmine, which won Best Female Lead, Short Term 12 which won Best Editing; This is Martin Bonner, which won the John Cassavetes Award; Blue is the Warmest Color, which won Best International Film and 20 Feet from Stardom which won Best Documentary.

The 7th annual Robert Altman Award was given to one film’s director, casting director, and ensemble cast. Jeff Nichols’ Mud received this award, along with casting director Francine Maisler and ensemble cast members Joe Don Baker, Jacob Lofland,Matthew McConaughey, Ray McKinnon, Sarah Paulson, Michael Shannon, Sam Shepard, Tye Sheridan, Paul Sparks, Bonnie Sturdivant and Reese Witherspoon.

The 2014 Roger and Chaz Ebert Fellowship which includes a cash grant of $10,000 was awarded to Lulu Wang. This annual award is given to a filmmaker currently participating in Film Independent’s signature diversity mentorship program, Project Involve. Wang wrote and directed her first feature film Posthumous set in Berlin, starring Jack Huston and Brit Marling.

The Bright Future Award, sponsored by Unilever Project Sunlight, honors a filmmaker whose work best exemplifies a commitment to telling stories of positive change in the world. The inaugural Bright Future Award recipient is Patrick Creadon, whose film, If You Build It, exemplifies the power of hands-on education and the impact a few budding creative minds can have on the future of a community. The award includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant funded by Unilever Project Sunlight.

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB – The Blu Review

An engrossing account of one homophobic redneck’s struggle to get the medicine he needs to survive despite having full blown AIDS, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is an honest portrayal of how anyone who is “different” was hated and rejected in our society in a less enlightened time (in this case, the mid-1980’s). Mathew McConaughey has an excellent shot at taking home an Oscar next month for his lead performance here. The actor lost all most fifty pounds to prepare for the role of Ron Woodroof, a character that addresses a still, very prevalent health issue in this country and does so with bravado. Also, Woodroof went up against some heavy corporate players, specifically big pharmaceutical, which should help his chances with the Hollywood left. The other strong performance and likely Oscar recipient in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is the revelatory Jared Leto as the transvestite Rayon and though his is the sort of unoriginal Oscar-bait character that the Academy adores, one can’t possibly ignore his powerful presence.

“The film is briskly directed by Jean-Marc Vallee who keeps the timeline clear (helped by title cards counting the days from Ron’s fatal diagnosis) and guides this exceptional cast. He perfectly captures that period of time when HIV was almost a modern-day scarlet letter eliciting blind hatred from the ignorant. And he doesn’t shy away from ravages of the disease (the use of a high-pitched piercing buzz to denote its attacks on the brain is highly effective). Vallee also makes excellent use of the Texas locales. Like many of the holiday films, this depicts a brutal time in history, but it’s essential in capturing the very high stakes in this compelling drama. Now Universal has released DALLAS BUYERS CLUB on Blu-ray and here’s the lowdown:

Image: The MPEG-4 AVC, 1080p transfer, with its aspect ratio at 2.39:1, is a natural-looking, vibrant, and crystal clear image that helps immerse us in the lives of these finely etched characters. At times the image is dazzlingly sharp, especially during close-ups and the contrast is perfectly pitched, creating a fine sense of depth. Grain is totally absent, and no specks or scratches mar the pristine source material (the movie was shot digitally using Arri Alexa cameras) though the color palette remains rather muted.

Sound: The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track won’t blow you away – this is, after all, a largely intimate film – but the crisp, clear sound possesses plenty of presence and resonance.

Unfortunately, Universal has really skimped on the extras:

Deleted Scenes – There are three of them, lasting less than five minutes total. The longest is a nice scene featuring McConaughey and Jennifer Ganer at Leto’s bedside. It’s a moving scene that I’m surprised was cut. The other two are brief and inconsequential.

A Look Inside ‘Dallas Buyers Club – is a negligible 4-minute promo piece featuring McConaughey talking about the film in between a few clips.

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is a terrific movie presented as a quality hi-def Blu-ray presentation that is worth having in your collection. I wish Universal had not been so stingy with the extras though. A look at the real Ron Woodroof would have been nice, or even a more in-depth ‘making of’ featurette. Perhaps a loaded edition awaits.

12 YEARS A SLAVE and GRAVITY Tie At 25th Annual Producers Guild Awards – Winners

12 YEARS A SLAVE and GRAVITY have tied at this year’s PGA. With AMERICAN HUSTLE taking the SAG ensemble on Saturday night, we have a bonafide Best Picture race on our hands folks! This is the first tie for the top film in Producers Guild Award history.

The PGA split keeps the Oscar race wide open in one of the tightest three-way battles in years, with “American Hustle” still in the game following a week of big showings at the Golden Globes, Oscar nominations and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Tonight the Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced this year’s winning motion picture and television productions at the 25th Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

His crash course of research reveals a lack of approved treatments and medications in the U.S., so Ron crosses the border into Mexico. There, he learns about alternative treatments and begins smuggling them into the U.S., challenging the medical and scientific community including his concerned physician, Dr. Eve Saks (Screen Actors Guild Award winner Jennifer Garner).

An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally in fellow AIDS patient Rayon (Gotham Independent Film Award winner Jared Leto), a transsexual who shares Ron’s lust for life. Rayon also shares Ron’s entrepreneurial spirit: seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, they establish a “buyers club,” where H.I.V.-positive people pay monthly dues for access to the newly acquired supplies. Deep in the heart of Texas, Ron’s pioneering underground collective beats loud and strong. With a growing community of friends and clients, Ron fights for dignity, education, and acceptance. In the years following his diagnosis, the embattled Lone Star loner lives life to the fullest like never before.

Spirit Award winner Matthew McConaughey stars in this first trailer for the fact-based drama DALLAS BUYERS CLUB from director Jean-Marc Vallée (The Young Victoria).

In DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, McConaughey portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1986, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live.

With the U.S. still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal.

Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a “buyers club,” which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies.

The film’s original screenplay is by Craig Borten and Melissa Wallack. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB will have it’s world premiere at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival, followed by a theatrical release on November 1st in New York and Los Angeles.

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, currently in post-production, has been acquired by Focus Features for domestic theatrical release in the second half of 2013. The company has also acquired Latin American rights to the feature. Focus CEO James Schamus and Focus president Andrew Karpen made the announcement today.

A Truth Entertainment production, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is produced by Robbie Brenner and Rachel Winter. Spirit Award winner Matthew McConaughey stars in the fact-based drama for director Jean-Marc Vallée (The Young Victoria). The film’s original screenplay is by Craig Borten and Melissa Wallack.
