LILO & STITCH (2025) – review

And we’re finally back to the blockbusters, to be precise, the big Summer box office blockbusters, that will dominate the multiplex for this weekend (of many to arrive). Of the titanic duo for the three-day holiday, this one’s a remake, though it actually may be considered a “franchise” or even a “tent pole”. In the wake of the huge success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, several other studios have wanted their own “unified, united film series”. In a few weeks, we’ll see DC Studios at Warner Bros. try once more with SUPERMAN, while Universal continues to “fiddle” with their “Dark Universe” returns of the classic movie monsters of the “golden age” (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.). Well, that “home of Marvel”, Disney, has an ongoing universe comprised of “live-action” remakes of their iconic animated classics. They stumbled, to put it lightly, a couple of months ago with SNOW WHITE. That nixed a planned redo of TANGLED, but this new redo was already well “down the pipeline”. Maybe since this isn’t almost 90 years old like the March misfire, this “re-imagining” of a 23-year-old cartoon feature will work, since children continue to adore (I’m stunned by all the clothing “merch” over the last few years) the cartoon chaos of LILO & STITCH.

We return to deep, far, faraway outer space as the United Galactic Federation meets to pass judgement on “mad” scientist Jumba Jookiba (voice of Zach Galifianakis). The Councilwoman (VO: Hannnah Waddingham) announces that he’ll be imprisoned while his “creation”, the destructive, wild Project 626, will be banished to a barren, empty world. Well, the little critter breaks his bonds and hijacks a ship and is on his way to Earth. The Councilwoman is relieved since the planet appears to be comprised of water…until she sees that 626 has crashed on an island. She then sends “Earth expert” Agent Pleakley (VO: Billy Magnussen) off to retrieve it with the begrudging help of Jookiba, who hopes this will help to reduce his “sentence”. Meanwhile, on that Hawaiian island named Kaua’i, an orphaned six-year-old girl, Lilo (Maia Kealoha), struggles to make friends and stay out of trouble. Luckily she’s not completely alone, as she lives with her nineteen-year-old sister Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong), who is her legal guardian after the death of their parents. But she’s having a tough time holding down a job while keeping their home tidy for the inspection from a kindly but firm social worker, Mrs. Kekoa (Tia Carrere). Luckily, Nani is helped by her neighbor Tutu (Amy Hill) and her smitten (with Nani) grandson David (Kalpo Dudoit). When 626 crash-lands, he disrupts a big wedding party, before being knocked out by a truck and taken to an animal shelter. That’s where he’s spotted by Lilo, who’s been begging for a puppy. 626 retracts the spikes on his back, along with his antennae and a pair of arms (he has four and two feet) in order to look more like a dog. It follows Lilo home, where she names it Stitch (VO: Chris Sanders). Oh, his pursuers are not far behind, as Jookiba and Pleakley assume human form and search for the escapee. Also on the hunt is CIA agent Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance), who suspects that an alien is on the loose. Can Stitch evade them while curbing his destructive instincts as Nani tries to convince Kekoa that she should retain custody of lil’ sis’ Lilo?

Heading up the cast, in the “co-title” role is the bubbly, effervescent screen newcomer (hey, she’s only nine now) Kealoha as Lilo. She’s got an infectious smile, bringing lots of good-natured energy to the role, getting us on her side when those “mean girls” zero in on her. She has a good rapport with the more-seasoned actress Augudong as her frazzled big sis Nani, who has a deft comic touch even in the manic slapstick sequences as she tries to keep the crazy chaos under control. Galifianakis tones down his weird, awkward comedy flick persona as the fussy and devious mad doc Jookiba. Most of the alien zaniness (aside from Stitch) is provided by Magnussen, who appears to be having a grand old time goofing on his leading man looks. Vance is somber and stoic as the determined fed who’s always a few steps behind his quarry. Carrere projects warmth and concern in a role that is usually villainess, but her social worker is truly trying to help things work out for the siblings. Hill is also a nurturing presence as the protector of those girls. while being a good “foil” for Dudoit as her clumsy, cute, and charming grandson who just can’t say the right things to his adored Nani.

So, this is a big leap from MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON for director Dean Fleischer Camp as he tackles a sprawling family fantasy adventure. For most of it 108-minute runtime, he keeps the story afloat with the plot pretty much “on track’ in a variation of the classic cartoon chases (think the Roadrunner and the Coyote, Tom and Jerry, etc.). And, as with many of these remakes, it’s not really all “live-action” as Stitch and all the aliens have now gone from smooth, fluid, hand-drawn (2-D) animation to state-of-the-art, every hair rendered CGI animation (we don’t see the live actors in the first six or seven minutes of the “space trial”). And these beloved cartoons have lost little of their appeal in the transition, though I’m not keen on Pleakley’s mucus-like skin texture. So the effects animation is slick, but it doesn’t mesh completely with the often clunky live slapstick, with many of the action set pieces ending with “wacky” frozen still shots. It proves distracting, much like the overuse of vocal “looping” or ADR, which results in many quick cutaways while characters are speaking. And a few shots where bits of dialogue are delivered by actors with their backs to the viewer. Perhaps this may have been implemented due to the stilted line direction of some film acting novices. For a time, I was flashing back to one of the many irritations of MADAME WEB (they set the bar very low for audio editing). The whole film seems to be running (or swimming) in circles, going into its second hour, with the obligatory set destruction and the overused “death fake-out” of so many family-friendly flicks. Sure, the island locations are gorgeous, and kids will still love the gross-out antics of Stitch, but those not swept away by a wave of nostalgia for that 2002 original may prefer to dust off that DVD (or VHS tape) for a more consistently entertaining comic romp with LILO & STITCH. Aloha!

BEN IS BACK – Review

Earnest and predictable, I can’t think of a single scene that stands out in writer/director Peter Hedges’ new drug addiction drama BEN IS BACK. It may have its heart in the right place, but boy is it lousy. Unlike this year’s similar BEAUTIFUL BOY, BEN IS BACK does not portray the downward spiral of drugs but instead takes place over one 24-hour Christmas Eve. By the time we meet 19-year Ben (Lucas Hedges – the director’s son!), he’s a young drug abuser returning home having been in rehab for 77 days and swearing “This time it will be different”. His mom Holly (Julia Roberts) acts happy to see him, yet the first thing she does is scramble to hide all the pills in the medicine cabinet. Ben’s younger sister Ivy (Kathryn Newton) claims to loves her brother but is clearly worried he’s going to ruin everyone’s holiday (he does!). The rest of the brood consists of Holly’s second husband Neal (Courtney B. Vance), who’s paid for all of Ben’s treatments, a pair of much younger half-siblings, and Ponce the dog.

The first half of BEN IS BACK depicts how one member can fracture an entire family, no matter how well-adjusted they may be. Unlike Ben’s sister, his mom is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and naively trusts that his old habits won’t catch up to him. This consists of many scenes of Holly hovering over Ben like a hawk, accompanying him to his rehab meeting and even into the bathroom while he pees, just to keep her eye on him. Ben and Ivy climb up to the attic to find Xmas decorations where he has a panic attack since that’s where he used to hide his drugs. At the film’s midpoint, BEN IS BACK runs out of mopey things to say about the mother/son dynamic and changes direction by introducing  thriller elements. Holly and her son decide to spend time together at a shopping mall, where Ben is spotted by some of his former drug dealers and clients riding up escalators, glaring at him menacingly while he’s trying to dine at the food court. This is where the film takes its turn into a more conventional crime drama. Apparently Ben owes some of these dealers money so they break into his home and kidnap poor Ponce. Holly and Ben’s all-night searched for the pinched pooch is ridiculous and feels like padding but it does pick up the pace from the dull first half.

The sensitive and anguished performances by Roberts and Hedges are effective in their intended, irritatingly Oscar-bait way. The aforementioned mall is also the setting for Roberts’ showiest grandstanding when Holly confronts the now Alzheimer’s -addled doctor who’d prescribed Ben painkillers years earlier for a hockey injury, a remedy she blames for her son’s messy current state. Roberts spits out this scene’s angry dialog in in a most actor-ly way, but the fact that screenwriter Hedges chooses to give this minor character dementia, unable to respond, seemed like a cheap shot. Why not make him clear-headed so these two can have an honest debate about doctor-patient ethics? As the scene is written, Holly comes off as a bully. Lucas Hedges displays the same downcast sensitivity that critics embraced in the recent BOY ERASED, but he seems to be playing the same weepy character here, one that’s a drag to be around. BEN IS BACK is never entertaining or informative and it runs out of lectures to give long before its morally questionable climax (I’m still unsure whether that’s a happy ending or a sad one).  After having just seen BOY ERASED and BEAUTIFUL BOY, I found BEN IS BACK dramatically flat, lacking any style or emotional punch and easily the worst of these three similar films. And I didn’t much care for those other two!

OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY – Review

officexmasparty

“It’s that time of year….” for another big holiday themed comedy. We’ve had a big  family yuletide mix of laughs and tears with ALMOST CHRISTMAS, that’s, ahem, almost a month old now. That bit of tinsel joined a long list of similar movie comedies like LOVE THE COOPERS and a film now considered an annual viewing tradition for many, NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION. Yes, they’re all holiday hijinks with the family, but that other family is largely ignored. I’m speaking of the “workplace family”, the folks you bond with while “on the job” (many “workaholics” spent more time with them than their spouses and kids). Ah, the studios got the hint, so the newest movie present under the big multiplex tree is all set to be unwrapped. Looks like we’re all invited to the big OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY.
The film begins with a tough pre-holiday event for Josh Parker (Jason Bateman) as he finalizes his divorce, He tries to look on the bright side while walking to his job at a Chicago-based data service company. Unfortunately moral there is more than a bit down. Supervisor Nate (Karan Soni) endures merciless teasing from his co-workers who believe his “always outta’ town” supermodel girlfriend is fiction. Executive secretary and newly single mom Allison (Vanessa Bayer) fights on the phone with her reckless ex. Mary (Kate McKinnon), the up-tight head of human resources, annoys those that aren’t on the straight and narrow (“button up that blouse!”). And  the pessimistic Jeremy (Rob Corddry) always seems to be ready to “blow a gasket”. Fortunately Josh is team-mates (and perhaps a bit more) with the resident IT wizard Tracey (Olivia Munn) who’s quick with a wisecrack and ideas for new projects. Plus Josh is great pals with the branch’s boss, and son of the company founder, Clay Vanstone (T.J. Miller), a fun, generous fella’ who’s looking forward to giving his employees a big holiday party. All seems to be a go for a “blow-out” that will allow everybody  to “blow off some steam”. Then big trouble arrives in stiletto heels, it’s Clay’s stepsister Carol (Jennifer Aniston), who oversees all the company’s outlets. She’s just closed the Orlando branch and has set the flagship office in her cost-cutting sights. Unless Clay and his team can land a big fish, namely a tech mega-company repped by Walter Davis (Courtney B. Vance) who’s only in town for a couple of days, the ax will fall. Oh, and there will be no holiday party, either (what a humbug!). Clay, Josh, and Tracey scurry over to a swank hotel to meet with the “button-down” Davis. He’s not impressed, so Clay plays a hunch and invites him to the big company Christmas party that night. But with just hours to go, can they put together a bash that will save their jobs? Really, what could possibly go wrong?

The calibre of the comedy dream team gathered for this flick is truly amazing. Leader of the pack is the always dry, understated Bateman who still doing a riff on his “Arrested Development” TV role, namely the voice of reason trying to stay afloat in a sea of insanity. His skill at getting big laughs from subtle facial expressions and line delivery is truly impressive. Frequent co-star Aniston (is this their fourth, fifth, or tenth movie?) is basically doing a less sexually aggressive spin on her HORRIBLE BOSSES man-eater. She’s still intimidating as she makes it clear that her threats are very real. Usual funny sidekick player Miller really swings for the fences in more of a big league, or lead, role. Unfortunately we’ve seen this “man-child” persona before and can’t help wonder if the script made a pitstop at Will Ferrell’s doorstep. Munn gets to show off more of her playful sassy, sexy side here  than in many of her recent roles ( RIDE ALONG 2 particularly). Corddry has little to do other than reprise his “angry frat-boy” jerk from his HOT TUB gigs. A big surprise is the energetic performance from Vance, usually a somber, serious actor (recently winning awards as Johnnie Cochran in the TV OJ docudrama) who appears to relish the chance to cut loose and get goofy. Oh, and there’s not one but two current SNL stars. Bayer (who was in TRAINWRECK last year) is one of the story’s more sympathetic characters as her smiles mask her frustrations with her ex and with a possible new suitor. McKinnon, the true shining light of the recent GHOSTBUSTERS reboot, brings her usual focused commitment to the prudish Mary, but her talent is wasted on a role that goes in a most obvious direction. We’re just waiting for her to unleash her “wild side” (she does “rock” a “non-denominational holiday sweater”). Sam Richardson of TV’s “Veep” wrings some laughs as the office drone turned clumsy, clunky “hip hop” DJ. Randall Park, THE INTERVIEW’s subject, has an hilariously awkward romantic encounter with Bayer. Two funny ladies score big laughs with their brief work here. Jillian Bell (23 Jump Street) is Trina, the boss of a, uh, “escort service” who goes from pleasant “sing song”-voiced people-pleaser to vicious “gangsta” pimp at the drop of a hat. But guilty of “grand theft larceny” as she steals her scene with Aniston is the hysterical Fortune Feimster, now on TV’s “the Mindy Project” as Aniston’s chattering Uber driver who delivers a truly clever rant on the name “Carol”. It’s no wonder she delivers the film’s final chuckle.

Oh, if only the finished film were worthy of this all-star cast. It’s like assembling Marvel’s Avengers to bust jaywalkers. They’re cast adrift in this murky mess of a script, credited to six (!) writers, which meanders aimlessly. I was often wondering if the actors were pressured to come up with better bits on set (or think them up after hours). Too many punchlines never connect and land with a loud thud, or are greeted with silence. Plus the constant shots of folks over-indulging gets tiresome (as Gene and Roger remarked about watching somebody play a video game), just as in last year’s SISTERS. The “rom-com’ subplot never surprises, and the “save the day” finale is telegraphed from the first ten minutes. Oh, and the flick commits the worst crime of comedy movies: All the laughs are in the trailer! When they occur we think “Oh, I recall that from the TV spot on SNL”. And here’s a private pet peeve. It’s set in Chicago (the offices are across from the big Picasso sculpture, for gosh sake!) and the credits proclaim “filmed in Atlanta”. Just as with THE BOSS, c’mon! Durn’ “bean-counters’! Directing duo (two directors and six screenwriters!) Josh Gordon and Will Speck make the movie feel like we’re enduring a real interminable party that just will never end, one where you wish the host would start turning off the lights and the music. At the film’s final moments we’ve suffering from a “cinematic hangover” and filled with regret for all the missed comic opportunities. These wonderfully talented performers deserve a better vehicle than the sloppy OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY.
