Chris Evans, Meet CAPTAIN AMERICA

Sure, part of it’s been laziness.  I just don’t get too excited hearing about that latest stream of Hollywood up-and-comers who might or might not be donning the CAPTAIN AMERICA hood and knocking out Red Skull with a star-emblazoned shield.  So, it came down to an official announcement for us to break open the CAPTAIN AMERICA might be/is going to be/could be played by… game, and that is precisely what came down the pike today.

Variety has confirmed what countless other sites are already screaming about.  Chris Evans has been offered and has taken the lead role in THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA to be directed by Joe Johnston.  The actor is no newbie when it comes to comic book characters.  He took on the role of The Human Torch/Johnny Storm in both big-budget FANTASTIC FOUR movies, and he will next be seen in THE LOSERS.  Even PUSH, which Evans starred in early last year, was a comic book-style film that could have easily branched out into franchise-hood had it brought in a little more scratch.  THE FIRST AVENGER, though, will be Evans’ first endeavor into characterizing a lone superhero, and I think it’s safe to say his launch into A-level stardom is quickly approaching.

Evans would be joining Hugo Weaving on the film, who has already signed on to play the arch-nemesis, Red Skull.  The film is set for release on July 22nd, 2011.

CAPTAIN AMERICA Candidates Down to 6

Sometimes when playing fantasy cast, you just have to sit back and think to yourself, “Who would I like to see get kicked in the face really, REALLY, hard?”  That would be why I ran the header pic that I did, because, more than likely, whoever plays CAPTAIN AMERICA in the Joe Johnston-directed film will be kicked in the face at least once in the course of the film.  Today, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we have a list of six candidates who are on Marvel’s shortlist for the lead role.

These candidates are John Krasinski (THE OFFICE), Scott Porter (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and SPEED RACER), Mike Vogel (CLOVERFIELD and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) Michael Cassidy (SMALLVILLE), and Patrick Flueger (THE 4400 and BROTHERS).  Chace Crawford (GOSSIP GIRL and the upcoming TWELVE) is expected to test screen in the next week and Garret Hedlund (TRON LEGACY), who has already tested, had to remove his name from the list due to scheduling conflicts. Scheduling issues also kept SUPERNATURAL’s Jensen Ackles off the final list. One of these things just doesn’t belong here.

That would be Krasinski who no one would have pegged as being a likely candidate for the lead role in a comic book movie until today.  Unfortunately for those who think this casting would be a bad choice (myself included), Krasinski brings the most name recognition to the table.  This could be something Marvel might jump at, but something tells me they are going more for the slightly to mostly unknown, especially if what Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Marvel is looking to offer the lead actor roughly $300K for the first film.

Of course, as was the case with THOR, Marvel may not run with any of these actors but rather find another, stronger candidate while the 30-day holds are set on everyone on this list.  We should be finding out within the next couple of weeks who will be donning the mask, wielding the starred shield, and, more than likely, getting kicked in the face.

Joe Johnston Talks Up JURASSIC PARK IV and CAPTAIN AMERICA

Director Joe Johnston sat down recently with Box Office Magazine to not only promote his upcoming WOLFMAN remake.   Among some of the more interesting aspects of the interview (including the fact that Gene Simmons and David Lee Roth provide howls utilized in the finished film), are some updates on upcoming Johnston projects, namely THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA and JURASSIC PARK IV.

Here is what Johnston had to say about the p0tential fourth film in the JURASSIC PARK franchise:

Well, there is going to be a Jurassic Park IV. And it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen. It breaks away from the first three—it’s essentially the beginning of the second Jurassic Park trilogy. It’s going to be done in a completely different way. That’s pretty much all I can tell you.

If you think of the first three as a trilogy, number four would be the beginning of a second trilogy.

Johnston also discussed the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA film, which, to hear Johnston describe it, sounds like it is going to be more of a character study on young Steve Rogers than a wham-bang adventure movie.

The great thing about Captain America is he’s a super hero without any super powers. Which is why this story, among the hundreds of superhero stories, appealed to me the most. He can’t fly, he can’t see through walls, he can’t do any of that stuff. He’s an everyman who’s been given this amazing gift of transformation into the perfect specimen—the pinnacle of human perfection. How does that affect him? What does that mean for him emotionally and psychologically?

He was this 98-pound weakling, he was this wimp, and he’s transformed instantly into this Adonis. You’d think he got everything he wanted. Well, he didn’t get everything he wanted. The rules change at that point and his life gets even more complicated and dire. For me, that’s the interesting part of the story. It’s got some great action sequences in it and some incredible stuff that we’ve never seen before. But at the heart of it, it’s a story about this kid, who all he wants to do is fit in. This thing happens and he still doesn’t fit in. And he has to prove himself a hero—essentially go AWOL to save a friend.

Check out the rest of the interview over at Box Office Magazine where Johnston talks about Rick Baker’s effects in WOLFMAN and the reasoning behind the R rating.

THE WOLFMAN hits theaters on February 12th.   THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA is set for release on July 22nd, 2011.

THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA Starts Shooting in June

Thats right all of you people that are DYING for a Captain America movie, Joe Johnston will start shooting in June of 2010. If shooting really does start then they will probably make the May 6, 2011 release date its already been given. Also, the official title of the movie is set to be THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA for all of you that are keeping score.

Who do you think is going to lining up to play Captain America? Id still love to see a Dolph Lundgren capt but that’s just me. Leave us a comment and tell us who YOU think will make a good Captain.

Thanks to /Film for the heads up.

So, now McConaughey WANTS to be Captain America?

captain-america41

Many of you will remember back when Matthew McConaughey was being touted as the shoe-in for the role of Captain America in the coming movie from Marvel, but the reality is that the rumors never ceased for this role.

The difference at the time was that McConaughey showed very little, if any, interest in the role. Of course, it’s not really his genre of expertise. Now, on the other hand, McConaughey is apparently having a change of heart and the idea is growing on him.

McConaughey told MTV that “it would be fun” in response to being asked about landing the role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Better yet, Jennifer Garner chimed in as well…

“You would be a great Captain America,† Garner told McConaughey during a recent press event. “You could wear a cape and tights and little pointy shoes.†

Funny! Someone hasn’t been reading their comic books, eh? Then again, this isn’t nearly as funny as some of the other rumored casting choices that include Channing Tatum and John Cena.

Fantasy Cast… Who should play Steve Rogers/Captain America?

fantasycast

It’s set for July 22, 2011.   ‘The First Avenger: Captain America,’ which I’m sure is going to get a name change any day now to just ‘Captain America,’ is coming out the month after ‘Thor,’ and the casting rumors are flying strong.

Of course, just about anyone can play Cap.   What role we need someone to fill is Steve Rogers.   It’s like casting Bruce Wayne before worrying about who would play Batman.

If I can put my two cents worth in, I think the perfect choice for Steve Rogers/Captain America would be Josh Holloway.

josh-holloway

A few years back, he was at the top of everyone’s list to play Gambit in the next ‘X-Men’ movie.   I think he’s more suited to play Cap America.   He’s got the build.   He’s got the look.   He has the attitude.   Plus, being one of the favorites on a hit television show, he’s right on the cusp of breaking out.   He just needs a starring role in something like ‘Captain America’ to completely launch his career.

Now, we leave it to you.   Who do you think would make an ideal Captain America?   Are you more concerned with someone filling the Steve Rogers role?

downey-iron-man0114a

Marvel Studios have revised their release dates for the upcoming films ‘Thor’, ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers’. They have also confirmed the fourth installment of ‘Spider-Man’. Here is the latest release schedule to date:

Iron Man  2: May 7, 2010 (unchanged)

Spider-Man 4: May 6, 2011

Thor: June 17, 2011Â   (previously June 16, 2010)

The First Avenger: Captain America: July 22, 2011 (previously May 6, 2011)

The Avengers: May 4, 2012 (previously July 15, 2011)

Maybe with a less rushed shooting and production schedule, Marvel can continue the consistent high-quality of product they have been turning out (Iron Man, Hulk and Spider-Man).

Jackson & Marvel bury the hatchet; Nick Fury appearing in ‘Iron Man 2’

ultimatenickfury

Samuel L. Jackson and Marvel have come to agreement regarding the actor reprising his role in ‘Iron Man 2’. Â  Nick Fury will be in the film!

Jackson’s deal is a long-term commitment to play Fury, the leader of the espionage unit the Shield. His deal contains an option to play the character in nine future Marvel superhero films, efforts that are expected to include ‘Captain America,’ ‘Thor,’ ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Shield’ as well as potential sequels.

Funny how this news comes just days after Marvel, a publicly traded company, announced record results in their fourth quarter of 2008. Â  It’s kind of hard to tell interested talent that you can’t pay them their salary if you have a movie (‘Iron Man’) that made $582 million worldwide. Â  Marvel reported net sales of $224.3 million and net income of $63.0 million, compared to $109.3 million and a net income of $27.6 million for Q4 2007.

Now, hopefully, we’re mere hours away from announcing Mickey Rourke has signed back on.

Hope, hope!

‘Captain America’ Gets Its Director

Joe Johnston has signed a deal to direct ‘First Avenger: Captain America’ for Marvel Studios. Â  Lest you know him simply as the guy who directed ‘Jumanji’, ‘Jurassic Park III’, and ‘Hidalgo’, Johnston has had a much more interesting career than that, especially when it comes to geekdom.

He acted as  effects illustrator and designer: miniature and optical effects unit on ‘Star Wars IV: A New Hope’, and art director visual effect on ‘Empire Strikes Back’, ‘Return of the Jedi’, and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’.   He’s also currently in post-production on ‘The Wolfman’.

“This is a guy who designed the vehicles for ‘Star Wars,’ who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ ” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “From ‘Rocketeer’ to ‘October Sky’ to ‘The Wolfman,’ you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one.”

Set in World War II, ‘Captain America’ tells the story of Steve Rogers, a sickly man who undergoes government experiments to become a super-soldier.

‘First Avenger: Captain America’ is another in a long line of films Marvel has slated building to their ‘Avengers’ movie in 2011, in which the main characters from ‘Iron Man’, ‘Hulk’, ‘Captain America’, and ‘Thor’ team up.

‘First Avenger: Captain America’ is set for a May 6, 2011 release.

So, who’s your choice to play Captain America? Â  Let us know below! Â  Personally, I’m rooting for Josh Holloway (Sawyer on ‘Lost’).

Captain America ‘Hulk’ cameo…

Thanks to Slashfilm.com we have some photos of the”cameo” from ‘The Incredible Hulk’. The above photo isn’t that clear, but someone did this to show it a little better:

Now, that isn’t much of a cameo, but it is a cameo so there you have it. Apparently the Captain was frozen in the Arctic, and this is probably going to be the segway into The Avengers movie, or a Captain America movie..We will see.

If you look really close, you can see that is Dolph Lundgren… just squint a little bit.
