PARIS CAN WAIT – Review

Can’t afford to pack your bags and embark on a vacation adventure in an exotic foreign land? No problem, just travel vicariously at the multiplex. Many different genre films have more than a bit of “travelogue” in them (one of the staples of “golden age” moviegoing was the double feature with several short subjects: cartoons, newsreels, comedy “two-reelers”, and the travelogue, sandwiched between the main films). One type of story often set in “faraway places’ is the “rom-com”. Oh, and a frequent star of such flicks is this film’s leading lady, Diane Lane (UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, NIGHTS IN RODANTHE). Yes, we’re talking about Superman’s Earth mum (we’ll see her again in the role soon in JUSTICE LEAGUE). These stories and many other recent Lane films concern her character re-discovering love and desire, usually after a long-standing relationship has gone “phhfft”. Now she’s on the road to romance once more, this time directed by a member of a lauded cinema dynasty in her narrative film debut. Here, the “city of lights” is the final destination, but we must take our time, since PARIS CAN WAIT.

The story begins in another French destination, Cannes, at the height of the famed annual film festival. High profile American movie producer Michael Lockwood (Alec Baldwin) frantically tries to pack for a quick business flight to Budapest. Since he’s constantly barking into his cell phone, most of the work is done by his faithful wife Anne (Lane), despite a painful ear infection. Outside the hotel, past the buxom starlets, is Michael’s producing partner, native son Jacques Clement (Arnaud Viard). Jumping into his driver’s vehicle, the group heads to the airport, but not without some detours for ear medicine (for Anne), along with fresh fruits and cheeses. When they reach the private jet hangar, the pilot advises Anne that the pressure could be quite painful for her condition. Anne says that she’ll beg off the work flight to Budapest and take the train to Paris, where Michael will join her in a couple of days. Nonsense, Jacques interjects. He has business in Paris, so she can join him as he motors there in his vintage (barely functioning) Peugeot. She hesitantly agrees as Michael flies away. But this “free spirit” is in no hurry as the usual seven hour ride turns into a multi-day adventure/ tour of the French countryside, complete with gourmet meals and expensive local wines. As they drive, eat, drink, and chat the two very different personalities (she’s pragmatic, he’s impulsive) begin to form a bond. Is it friendship or something deeper?

So who wouldn’t want to take a leisurely drive with the radiant Ms. Lane? Now in her fifth (!) decade as a film actress, she exudes a relaxed charm with a “down to Earth” attitude. There’s no movie star gloss about her. When the camera goes in tight for a reaction shot, there’s no fuzzy distortion or hazing. She’s comfortable with her maturity, flashing a smile that seems “earned’ by time. She shows us that Anne doesn’t quite know what to think of her “travel buddy”, but we see her slowly warm to him. Anne may be at a crossroads, but Lane’s confident performance is the film’s greatest strength. But talk about charm, Viard has tons (or barrels like wine) to spare. This Gaillec”smoothie” has an infectious appreciation of everything. Jacques denies himself no pleasure, even munching on plants pulled right from the forest (“A little salt, pepper, and a dash of oil…”). Though he frustrates Anne with his delays (“Ah, but it is truffle season!”), he really listens to her, and by the last miles (thanks to her detour) they form an emotional connection. It’s no wonder Michael is a touch worried (he’s only half-joking). Baldwin’s quite believable as the driven movie “big wig”, still smitten with Anne, but more than a bit distracted (almost neglectful). While Jacques is his “work partner”, she’s his “home partner”, their ardor now a tad cooled. It’s hoped he slows down and takes a lesson or two from Jacques.

Oh, that cinema dynasty I referred to? This is written and directed by Eleanor Coppola (wife of Francis Ford), making her narrative debut at age 80 (guess it’s never too late to try something new, another one of the story’s themes). Like her male lead, Coppola lets the film glide along with an unhurried pace. She allows us to drink in the gorgeous setting (expertly shot by cinematographer Crystel Fournier) from ancient architecture to opulent museums, the green flowing hills to the swankiest hotel rooms and restaurants. The meals are presented so lushly we almost expect the camera to pan over to another table occupied by Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, the stars of the cinematic cuisine “crawls”, THE TRIP, THE TRIP TO ITALY, and the upcoming (hooray!) THE TRIP TO SPAIN. This breezy flick takes a turn into some dark dramatic territory in its final act, but its last moments are full of whimsy (the “fourth wall” is chipped, but not really broken). Everything’s not quite wrapped up with a dainty bow which may frustrate some, while giving some hope for a follow-up (where could they go next?). Sure it’s somewhat slight, but for those wanting a charming road trip without hitting the highway (or dealing with the airport), relax for a neat 90 minutes because PARIS CAN WAIT.

Lightning Entertainment’s Slate Of New Titles For Cannes Includes Chris Colfer’s STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

Lightning Entertainment has acquired international rights to five feature films and will present the slate of new titles, including the star-studded comedy STRUCK BY LIGHTNING written by and starring Glee’s Chris Colfer, to buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market, it was announced today by Robert Beaumont, President of Lightning Entertainment.

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING will make its market premiere at the Marché du Film following its Tribeca Film Festival world debut where it received an overwhelmingly positive response. SERVITUDE will also make its market premiere with promotional footage being shown for family film HEAVEN’S DOOR and South African thriller ONE LAST LOOK. BLACK SOUTH-EASTER is currently in production.

“We are thrilled to present this eclectic slate of new titles featuring films from across the globe to our buyers at Cannes and we are incredibly excited that both STRUCK BY LIGHTNING and SERVITUDE will be making their market premieres next month,” said Robert Beaumont. “We always look to find films with a unique twist that we can bring to the marketplace, and we feel that these films are right on target,” he continued.

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING is written by and stars Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer from Fox’s popular award-winning TV show, Glee. He stars alongside Rebel Wilson (BRIDESMAIDS), Allison Janney (THE HELP), Christina Hendricks (AMC’s Mad Men), Dermot Mulroney (THE GREY) and Sarah Hyland (ABC’s Modern Family). The smart, irreverent coming-of-age comedy is directed by Brian Dannelly, who previously directed cult comedy SAVED! and was creative producer on the first season of Showtime’s Weeds where he also directed several episodes.

The film tells the tale of seventeen year old Carson Phillips who is determined to make something of himself and blaze a trail beyond his crummy high school, when he is suddenly struck by a bolt of lightning. The incident is the spark to a wickedly funny story about a young man who devises a blackmailing scheme to improve his chances of getting accepted into a top college…but what he accomplishes is much more profound.

The comedy is produced by David Permut, Roberto Aguire and Mia Chang, co-produced by Monica Aguirre Diez Barroso, Steve Longi and Mark Moran and executive produced by Jason Michael Berman, Chris Colfer, Glenn Rigberg and Lawrence Kopeikin. It is a co-production between Permut Presentations and Camellia Entertainment.

ICM and Traction Media sold international rights to Lightning Entertainment. The deal was negotiated by Joseph Dickstein, the company’s SVP of Acquisitions, with Richard Guardian serving as a consultant on the film for Lightning.

SERVITUDE is a comedy written by Michael Sparaga (SIDEKICK) and directed by award-winning film director Warren P. Sonoda whose previous credits include HAM & CHEESE, TEXTUALITY, and UNRIVALED.  The film stars Joe Dinicol (the CW’s The L.A. Complex), Enrico Colanton (CBS’ Person of Interest), Dave Foley (HBO’s The Kids in the Hall), Kristen Hager (BBC’s Being Human) and John Bregar (THE ENTITLED).  The comedy is produced by Sean Buckley of Buck Productions and Michael Sparaga’s Victory Man Productions and was developed with mentorship from veteran producer/director Ivan Reitman and acclaimed comedy screenwriter, Etan Cohen. Released theatrically by Alliance Films in Canada earlier this year, the film will make its US debut at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 29th.

Josh goes in to quit his job waiting tables at Ranch Steakhouse, but is unable to do so as the restaurant is short-staffed for the night. After discovering a secret memo revealing the company’s plans to fire the staff, he rallies his fellow servers and takes over the restaurant for one final, glorious night.

ONE LAST LOOK marks the feature film debut of successful television and commercial director Philip Roberts, who also wrote the script. Currently in post-production, the thriller starsStephanie Schildknecht (YOUNG LEONARDO) and newcomer Anna Capraro as two gorgeous sisters on a trip through Africa.  When Angie disappears, Yasmin accepts the help from a loner musician to find her sister which leads her to the remote farm of a charismatic sculptor, played by Neil Sandilands (Fox’s House). But appearances deceive, and behind the charm and smile is hidden a terrible secret.  Lightning holds worldwide rights outside of Africa, with Richard Guardian serving as a consultant on the film.

HEAVEN’S DOOR is a family film starring Charisma Carpenter (upcoming THE EXPENDABLES 2), Dean Cain (OUT OF TIME), Golden Globe winner Joanna Cassidy (HBO’s Six Feet Under) and Edward Herrmann (the WB’s Gilmore Girls), written and directed by Craig Clyde (THE WILD STALLION, A CHRISTMAS WISH). Currently in post-production, the film is produced by Bryce W. Fillmore and Dave Hunter. HEAVEN’S DOOR is a heartwarming tale about a small town girl who discovers a window into Heaven and uses her new found powers to help heal and bolster faith in the small community until she is faced with the ultimate sacrifice. The film will air in the US at Christmas 2012.

BLACK SOUTH-EASTER is a noir thriller currently shooting in Cape Town, South Africa.  The film is written and directed by NYU film graduate Carey McKenzie, who makes her feature film debut following her critically acclaimed documentary, ORIGINAL CHILD BOMB. McKenzie developed the project through the Binger Institute, which was also selected for the Berlinale Co-Pro Market in 2009. The thriller is produced by Rachel Young and Tendeka Matatu, whose 2008 film, GANGSTER’S PARADISE: JERUSALEMA, was a critical and box office success, screened at several international film festivals and was the country’s official entry for the Academy Awards. The cast includes Tony Kgoroge (INVICTUS) and Fana Mokoena (MACHINE GUN PREACHER), who have both been cast in Justin Chadwick’s newly announced LONG WALK TO FREEDOM, as well as Yu Nan (upcoming THE EXPENDABLES 2), Deon Lotz (SKOONHEID), Thomas Gumede (OTELO BURNING) and Zolani Mahola (FRESHLY GROUND).   Richard Guardian will serve as a consultant on the film for Lightning.

The film tells the story of an ambitious policeman, Sizwe Miya, who uncovers a poaching scheme by his ex-police-comrade who is now a corrupt crime lord. As a man of integrity, he has no choice but to take a stand against his old colleague.

In addition to the new Cannes slate, Lightning will also be showing buyers first footage from the comedy THE HOT FLASHES starring Brooke Shields, Daryl Hannah, Virginia Madsen, Camryn Manheim and Wanda Sykes and screening the Australian sci-fi film, 25th REICH starring Jim Knobeloch, Dan Balcaban and Jak Wyld. Lightning will also present the thriller FIVE THIRTEEN starring Tom Sizemore, Taryn Manning, Danny Trejo and James Russo.

‘Humpday’ is tearing it up at Cannes

AMC posted about blog this morning after talking to Mark Duplass(left) and Josh Leonard(right) during the Cannes film festival. Mark and Josh were talking about the humbling experience it has been for them having ‘Humpday’ at the festival. Check out part of it here:

“We found out a few months before the official announcement came in. It kind of blew my mind, to be honest. This is a tiny, tiny movie made with friends… the fact that it’s come this far is kinda surreal still. …”

When asked if they had been taking part in any of the Cannes festivities they had this to say:

“Josh almost got arrested trying to get into a big film premiere. Twice.
That, and the four minute standing ovation we got for the premiere of Humpday. Or, maybe it was the 75 year-old Frenchman (who) asked me in a Q&A if Josh and I were homos in real life. Tough call… it’s been a good few days. …”

I am really stoked that this movie is doing so well. The director and stars of the film are all great people and deserve everything they get from the flick. Make sure you go out and see it when its released on July 10th!
