Low budget horror does not get much better than the original THE EVIL DEAD from 1981. In fact no other low budget horror film even looks like THE EVIL DEAD thanks to Sam Raimi. So if you want to see how a future major director starts from the real bottom end of film making and works his way up then you need to watch THE EVIL DEAD at all costs. Besides, Raimi was just a young kid when he made it (using a school’s 16mm film camera)….. and so were his friends who acted in it…. The movie was filmed in 1979 and released in 1982 where it hit the video market just at the right time. It was one of the very first cult classics promoted by the advent of video tape.

THE EVIL DEAD still is one of the nastiest films ever made. It contains extreme violence, blood, tree rape, torture, beheadings, dismemberments, mutilations, gore, violence towards women, chain saws – all in full view of the camera. The camera work is used unusual and skillful, the editing is dramatic and the low budget special effects beat the pants out of some of the neutered CGI we’re subjected to these days.

The premise of THE EVIL DEAD is simple. Five young kids go to a cabin in the woods for a short vacation. In the house they find a tape recording which manages to invoke an incantation which wakes up the evil in the woods. It comes after them – turning some of them into the undead, demons, zombies and flesh eating ghouls. Cue lots of household items being used as weapons, an initially sissy anti-hero (Bruce Campbell) who became, thanks to this film and its two sequels, the god of millions of adoring horror fans Copied by a hundred other horror films, exploited by a million uncensored bootleg copies – THE EVIL DEAD is still the low budget horror king. And that is a hard act to beat! Now you can catch it again on the big screen when it plays midnights this weekend (June 29th and 30th) at The Tivoli Theater.

THE EVIL DEAD Screening Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

EVILDEDA-HEADER

“Thank you. I don’t know what I would have done if I had remained on those hot coals, burning my pretty flesh!”

evildeadult

THE EVIL DEAD screens midnights this weekend (October 9th and 10th) at The Moolah Theater (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO). Admission is only $5. Come early for great drink specials, cool trivia with even cooler prizes.

EvilDead-4

Sam Raimi’s classic horror-comedy THE EVIL DEAD still holds up after almost 35 years. Even though the plot may now sound very clichéd, and it probably did in 1981 too, it never hinders the fun of horror: A group of five friends, Ash, Cheryl, Scotty, Linda and Shelly (played by Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly respectively) drive to a remote forest cabin for a fun weekend but their plans are quickly put on hold by the presence of sinister forces from the unknown. After having inadvertently summoned the evil entities with the help of a strange book and audio tape found in the cellar, everything turns against them: the forest won’t allow them to leave and starts assaulting them in gruesome ways, turning them into zombie-like freaks one after another. Ultimately only one of the friends remains human, intent on making it out alive…

evil-dead-2-4

THE EVIL DEAD starts as an atmospheric suspense-driven horror film: the camera crawls near the ground like a preying animal, there’s focus on creepy little details like a swing banging against a wall, a clock pendulum stopping by itself, a bridge ominously falling apart even before anything out of the ordinary has happened. Once the gore starts after about 30 minutes, it keeps escalating to ridiculous levels, conveniently shifting the tone towards comedy without awkward mood changes. The infamous vine rape scene looks genuinely nasty, providing maybe the most horrific moment in the story, and while the wild dismemberments in the latter half of the film are intentionally over the top, the tone maintains a feel of tragedy throughout – the freaks were once human beings, more than fodder for axes, bullets and chainsaws. Despite the excessiveness of the gore, the suspense is never allowed to fade away even at the very end, thanks to Raimi’s skillful direction and the frequently oblique camera-work.

evil-dead

The effects still look excellent for the most part; only the stop-motion transformations of the climactic scenes at the end have dated notably, but I think their old-fashioned cartoon-like quality is really charming in a way. The screen-presence of the pus-oozing plastic monsters is on a wholly different plane of existence than the obviously non-existent CGI creations of many modern action movies.

Don’t miss THE EVIL DEAD when it screens midnights this weekend (October 9th and 10th) at The Moolah Theater (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO).

Gimme Some Sugar, Baby! – ARMY OF DARKNESS Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

“Keep your damn filthy bones outta my mouth!”

army_of_darkness_DVD1_2

ARMY OF DARKNESS  plays this weekend (August 22nd and 23rd) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

If they’d put Sam Raimi in charge of the banks there wouldn’t be any recession, because what he managed to do with a small budget earlier in his career is absolutely remarkable.

army-of-darkness

One reason that the Evil Dead series is such a satisfying trilogy of movies is that Sam Raimi added to the formula with each new instalment in an intelligent way. Where the first film was an out-and-out horror film, the second was a horror-comedy, while ARMY OF DARKNESS (1992) was a horror-comedy-fantasy. This meant that each movie has its own distinct personality, while sharing a single core idea. With ARMY OF DARKNESS, Raimi produced the most commercial entry in the series and played down the horror element in favor of fantasy battles and humor. The latter is mainly provided, of course, by Bruce Campbell. He is such an important part of this movie that it is inconceivable to imagine him not in it. Similar to his turn in EVIL DEAD 2, Campbell puts in a comic acting master-class. His brand of hammy acting and physical knock-about humor really has to be seen to be believed. Campbell’s considerable cult reputation is hugely based on his performances in these two films; he is quite simply a revelation. Of course, Sam Raimi has to be credited too, as his kinetic style of direction is a perfect match for Campbell’s over-the-top style of comic acting. Raimi remains one of the few directors who has consistently found a way of combining comedy and horror effectively. No mean feat, as all too often, despite the abundance of comedy-horrors, very rarely do they succeed in being either funny or scary.

ArmyOfDarkness2

Now you’ll have the chance to ARMY OF DARKNESS on the big screen again when it plays this weekend (August 22nd and 23rd) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

Prince Wheeliam

Prince Wheeliam of England is an avid racing fan. He can’t believe his luck that the final race of the one-of-a-kind World Grand Prix is happening on the streets of London. Though he must remain impartial when by his grandmother the Queen’s side, he is privately rooting for his fellow Brits Lewis Hamilton and Nigel Gearsley to cross the finish line first.

Sgt. Highgear

Sgt. Highgear is a member of the regiment assigned to London’s landmark Buckingham Palace. With a recognizable tall bearskin cap atop his scarlet body, he stands guard at his sentry box with pride and conviction.

Topper Deckington III

Topper Deckington III is a classic British double-decker bus in a vivid shade of red who relishes in his daily Killswitch route through London’s famous bustling Petroldilly Circus.

Chauncy Fares

No one knows the sites, streets or shortcuts of London better than the jovial Chauncy Fares, a quintessential London black cab.

Review: ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’

cloudymeatballs

From the children’s picture book of the same name, Columbia Pictures,  and  Sony Pictures Animation, comes ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,’  a tasty tale of an all-you-can-eat  buffet gone wrong. A well meaning inventor, Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), has been trying to come up with the one thing that’ll put his experiments (spray on shoes, monkey  thought translator)  on the map, while trying to  help people  at the same time. But everytime his inventions go bust, Flint’s  heavily eyebrowed  Dad (James Caan) frowns on his attempts and tries to persuade him to join the family business. Added to his distress, Flint has been forever bothered and pestered by town brute Brent (Adam Samberg). Aided by Steve the Chimp (Neil Patrick Harris), Flint forges ahead  with his next invention, a water to food machine, and when he  tests his newest creation, it’s accidentally  sent into Earth’s orbit.  Along with  Sam Sparks (Anna Faris), the new, spunky weathergirl, and the locals of the seaside town of Swallow Falls, Flint is  surprised to  see his  machine  pouring down  all kinds of salivating food instead of  rain and everyone celebrates the wonderboy. Like manna from heaven comes mutated  pancakes, juice, ice cream, hamburgers, but after a while, instead of feeding the masses, all these edibles become a virtual food storm with an ala carte spaghetti twister. Flint and  the citizens of  Swallow Falls  now have to find a way to save the world’s appetite from his out of control smorgasbord.

Directors/screenwriters Phil Lord and Chris Miller have taken the  sweet children’s book by Judi and Ron Barrett and  made a film than can stand apart from the 1978 classic. Their hammy, food filled  script will have you chuckling, with lines like, “a breakfast system is on its way…my forecast? Sunny – sideup.”   Be on the lookout for the laughable, standout  characters  of Earl Devereaux (Mr. T), the bubble-butted town cop, his son Cal Deveraux (Bobb’e J. Thompson), and the  conniving Mayor Shelbourne (perfectly voiced by Bruce Campbell) trying to  cash-in on Flint’s food making machine, along  with the additional happenin’ cast of Anna Faris, Bill Hader, Adam Samberg,  and Neil Patrick Harris. The palate filled, scrumptious animation, especially the scene  where the main characters   are seen frolicking around in a room full of jello,  is best seen in 3-D and is accompanied by a mouth watering score from Mark Mothersbaugh (‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,’ ‘Rugrats’). Rated PG for some mild language, this family friendly ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ is yummy enough to eat and best served in your local movie theatre.

Bruce Campbell Speaks on ‘Spider-Man 4’

bruce campbell spiderman

If you’re a fan of Bruce Campbell and his always-entertaining cameos in friend, Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ films, this is some nice news to get your week started.   Campbell, while attending the red carpet premiere of ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,’ spoke with Access Hollywood about ‘Spider-Man 4.’

First off, the film is set to begin shooting this coming January.   This will give ‘Spider-Man 4’ the same amount of time the first ‘Spider-Man’ had between start of production and release date.   ‘Spider-Man 2’ didn’t begin production until April of the year before its release, and ‘Spider-Man 3’ began production all the way back in November of 2005.   The latter piece of information didn’t seem to help its chances with fans of the previous two.

Campbell also made some mention as to his part in ‘Spider-Man 4.’   He will definitely be appearing in the film, but it’s not going to be another, five-minute cameo as with the previous, three films.   Campbell revealed that he is taking a major role in the upcoming film, which will surely get fan fantasy casting rumors started immediately.   There have been rumors for years that Campbell may, some day, take on the role of villain, Mysterio.   Early rumors on ‘Spider-Man 4’ were that the villain would be Morbius, a rumor that was shot down, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing a vampire-themed entry into the series.   This also doesn’t put Campbell in the driving seat for that, particular character.   ‘Spider-Man 4’ is sure to have more than one villain, even though that was one of the biggest issues fans had with the third film.

‘Spider-Man 4’ is set for release on May 6th, 2011.
