OLD DADS – Review

It looks like another stand-up comic has decided to expand on his stage persona and make the jump to a feature film. Of course, that’s nothing new as comedians have been doing this since the first filmed pratfall or wise-crack. Things are a bit more welcoming now as the onslaught of streaming services have put out a big “welcome mat” to the jokesters, raking in lots of new subscribers with taped comedy concerts, usually running about an hour or so, perfect for those needing a quick fix of laughter. It has worked for Kevin Hart and Amy Schumer, and Jo Koy’s autobiographical EASTER SUNDAY certainly found an audience at the multiplex. Will the same happen to this touring comic who pushes against the current culture? Well, it’s going straight to streaming, which might be the perfect home for a trio of OLD DADS.

The de facto leader of the threesome (think Moe without the bowl haircut, or no hair at all) is Jack (Bill Burr). He’s living the good life in the suburbs of Pamona, CA in a home with his gorgeous wife Leah (Katie Aselton) and their adorable five-year-old son along with one “on the way”. Oh, Jack is just past the big “5-0”, hence the flick’s title. Speaking of, the other dads are his best pals. There’s high-energy Connor (Bobby Cannavale), who loves to have fun as long as he can hide from his intimidating wife Cara (Jackie Tohn), who lets their five-year-old son run wild. And there’s Mike (Bokeem Woodbine) who’s living with his gorgeous much younger girlfriend Britney (Reign Edwards) after getting his two sons from a previous marriage into college. These days the guys are especially happy since they’ve sold their sports apparel business and are now senior employees . But this doesn’t sit well with twenty-something new owner Aspen (Miles Robbins) who wants to revamp the place and toss out anyone over 35. To keep in his “good graces” the guys go on a disastrous road trip. This gives Jack more agita when dealing with the “touchy-feely” head of his son’s ritzy private school, the “doctor” (Rachael Harris), who enlists him and Connor to run the big school fundraiser. And then Britney drops a bombshell on Mike. Suddenly it feels as though the entire world has turned on the old-fashioned “ordinary Joes”. Can they ever catch a break or will the new social rules of the 21st century crush them?

Since this film is an extension of his stand-up monologues, the first in the cast would be Mr. Burr (who also is a big force behind the camera). He seems fairly comfortable in this lead, and quick with line delivery while not given a big emotional range. Jack goes from affable “bro” to enraged alpha at almost regular intervals, though we get a bit of his softer side as he deals with his wife and son. Cannavale has more to do, as he must become the modern henpecked hubby, then shift into the “over-served” wildcard, before eliciting the most laughs as he desperately tries to be hip with the younger staff at work, while checking himself for wrinkles and grey hairs. Much more mellow is Woodbine whose Mike gets great delight in testing the boundaries of modern race relations, especially for fans of rap music while never flaunting what appears to be his charmed homelife. As for their “better halves”, Aselton does a variation of the long-suffering but adoring missus since often in modern sitcoms like “The King of Queens”, who has her hubby’s back despite her snarky asides and eye rollings. Tohn is effective as the cartoonish new age shrew who has a fast sneer for anyone questioning her parenting “style”. On the “flip side”, Edwards is the sweet “pixie girl” of Mike’s (and most guys) dreams who shows her strength when fate throws the couple a big “curve”. As for the “cancellers”, the too-sensitive villains, the “work jerk” is the obnoxious Aspen played with an aloof arrogance and casual cruelty by the wispy Robbins. But the real “big bad” may be the passive-aggressive “back-biter” who’s the head of the school played with eyebrow-arching relish by the delightfully devious Harris who earns the jeers and hisses of the audience.

Oh BTW, Mr. Burr is the film’s director and the co-writer of the script, as I hinted earlier. It’s the showcase for his character who delights in “pushing buttons” as he “melts the snowflakes”. It may play better as a standup set as the ranting and confrontational sequences become grating and abrasive after the first act or so. It feels as though the whole thing is a verbal comic riff on the “crime alley” training exercise for police trainees. Jack enters another area, a “way too woke” doofus pops up, and he must mow em’ down with a nasty but well-deserved “burn”. Yes, they’re true “cardboard” targets in his takedown on the irritants in society of the new world. Burr’s longtime fans will take great delight in Burr’s battle, but “newbies” will be tempted to grab the remote and start a’ scrollin’. And the use of hidden cameras to take down the trio would never fly for an instant despite the “softening” of the culture. It all comes together in a strip club finale (perhaps to get some of that HANGOVER vibe) and a cliched race to the hospital that sadly involves a beloved veteran actor in a thankless cameo, this after a current gifted thespian is wasted in a “throw-away” bit. The whole film is shot like a flat one-camera sitcom, with a structure that feels like several episodes strung together. I appreciate that Cannavale was putting an energetic effort into Connor, but only rapid fans of Burr’s specials will relish this feature-length farce with him as the general leading the charge of these OLD DADS.

THE INSPECTION – Review

A homeless young Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options, decides to join the Marines, but the catch is the young man is gay and an earlier time when gays were banned from serving in the military, the era of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Gabrielle Union plays the mother of this young man, whom she kicked out ten years earlier, in this moving drama inspired by writer/director Elegance Bratton’s own experiences. The drama has garnered strong praise for its powerful drama, in an impressive directorial debut for writer/director Elegance Bratton.

Ellis French (Jeremy Pope) has been living on the streets since his mother kicked him out at the age of 15. Now 25, he sees little ahead for him and decides to do something desperate, specifically entering the military. Not just the military but the Marines, rather than a less-tough branch like the army or navy. However, before he can be inducted, Ellis must get his birth certificate from his mother, who does not want any contact with him. Showing up at her door, his mother (Gabriel Union), a ramrod-straight, strict corrections officer, is both shocked and cold towards him, treating her son as if he is a threat to her safety and barring the door to him. She responds to his decision to join the Marines with a mix of skepticism and mild amusement. Eventually, reluctantly, she warily lets him in.

Her behavior raises questions in our minds about their past history but the film offers little on that past. Her apartment is filled with objects that tell us she is deeply religious, so we guess that her religious feelings are at least part of why she rejected her gay son, but her reaction is so extreme, we wonder if there is something more.

Joining the Marines hardly seems like the best idea for a gay Black man in this more homophobic era, so his estranged mother’s skepticism about that decision might be something we share as well. Yet Ellis is making a very deliberate choice in picking the Marines. He is offering himself up to be remade, with a hope for a rebirth into a different life. That mix of desperation and determination drives him but it seems a long reach.

Marine boot camp is tough for any recruit but more so for someone concealing a secret like Ellis French. Induction calls for recruit French to declare he is not a communist or planning to overthrow the government, along with a litany of other things, including being homosexual. He does that without blinking. Once at boot camp, French finds himself among mostly white recruits, who already think of themselves as Marines. Yet he finds he is not the only one facing special challenges, including a Muslim recruit named Ismail (Eman Esfandi).

The drill instructors are led by tough Sergeant Laws (Bokeem Woodbine), a Black sergeant who, unlike the rest of the instructors, has actual combat experience. It is something he wears like a medal on his chest, something which both he and the other instructors clearly feel sets him on a different plane, but it also has a toxic effect. “I hate recruits,” Laws says early on, “But I love Marines.” Since both Laws and recruit Ellis French are Black, one expects a connection between them, but it is a Hispanic drill instructor, Rosales (Raul Castillo), who quietly offers some encouragement and something more, albeit more in private.

Jeremy Pope gives a moving performance as Ellis French, who reveals a level of commitment to his goal and courage in the face of the abuse he receives once they figure out he is gay, as you know they will. In an unusual role for her, Gabriel Union gives us a harsh, rigid and religious woman as Ellis’ mother, although we catch glimpses of a motherly impulse to hope for success for her son, even as she keeps him at arm’s length.

Other outstanding performances sharpen the raw emotion of this powerful drama, notably Raul Castillo as the more kind drill instructor. Bokeem Woodbine is alternately terrifying and riveting Laws, the hardened lead drill instructor.

It is a grueling experience, as one expects, but THE INSPECTION is unblinking and unrestrained in its depiction of the boot camp’s bullying, abuse and hardship. That brutal honesty goes a ways to elevating this film above the usual boot camp tale, but the film is also a salute to what the Marines gave Bratton, a personal rebirth on several levels. We have to assume French’s unseen ten years spent on the streets have given him an inner strength and resourcefulness we don’t expect at first. Along with the bullying and violence, we also see moments of friendship, humor, and even tenderness. It is not just a sense of camaraderie that grows between the recruits but a pride in accomplishment, and a deeper kind of personal transformation for the lead character.

The camera often focuses closely on faces, and a surprising number of scenes are shot in dim light or half lit, giving the film a far different tone than most boot camp dramas, one that is more contemplative. The pace is contemplative too, at least early on, requiring us to let things develop. We are given little about Ellis’ previous life, or details of what happen between him and his mother, leaving the audience wondering about what has to have been pivotal years. Instead, the focus is firmly on the boot camp experience, and its powerful ending, which eschews pat conclusions.

It is not a perfect film but this semi-autobiographical drama is surprising, effective and deeply, movingly human, and an impressive debut for writer/director Elegance Bratton, full of promise.

A Marine unit stationed in the hostile province of Helmand Afghanistan wilderness faces a harrowing mission as they try to help a fugitive woman reach safety from the Taliban in JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE.  Packed with intense action, thrills and the gritty reality of war, the all-new movie JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE is inspired by JARHEAD, the highly praised feature film that follows a naïve young recruit and his platoon mates from the intensity of boot camp to being deployed to a lonely outpost in a surreal desert setting.  JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE transports the action to the brutal battlefields and dusty villages of Afghanistan, where a band of Marines risk their lives to save a woman fleeing certain death at the hands of her Taliban pursuers.

Battle-scarred and disillusioned by the war, Corporal Chris Merriman (Josh Kelly) is put in charge of a unit whose next mission is to resupply a remote outpost on the edge of Taliban-controlled territory.  While driving through the hostile Helmand province, a Navy SEALflags down their convoy and enlists the unit on an operation of international importance: they must help an Afghan woman famous for her defiance of the Taliban escape the country.  Without tanks or air support, Merriman and his team will need all the courage and firepower they can muster to fight their way across the war-torn country and shepherd the woman to safety.  JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE is a thrilling action-adventure that celebrates the courage and patriotism of the men and women in the U.S. Marines.

JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE will be released on Blu-ray August 19th but We Are Movie Geeks has already seen it!

The original JARHEAD had a satirical bent and was less about the insanity of warfare in the jungle than the insanity of inaction, boredom and frustration in the desert. JARHEAD was also directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes and had an A-list cast that included Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Fox. JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE is directed by John Michael Paul, whose credits include the TV quasi-sequels LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER and TAKEN: THE SEARCH FOR SOPHIE PARKER. It stars Stephen Lange, basically recreating his character from AVATAR (nothing wrong with that), actor Josh Kelly, who served three tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq as an Army Ranger before starting his acting career mostly in TV, and Cole Hauser. It’s a cheaper-looking film featuring mostly hand-to-hand combat as opposed to large-scale battles or helicopter rescues, but the action is excruciating and relentless, and director Paul doesn’t spare the audience. If anything, he rubs our noses in the blood, sweat, and tears of combat. Bullets pierce bodies with sickening force and frequency, bones shatter, men die. JARHEAD is more in the mode of LONE SURVIVOR and more conventional in its tone than its predecessor and is a good, tough, satisfying war film.

JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE looks very good on Blu-ray, offering a sharp image that bolsters the film’s gritty intensity.   The movie is provided with a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio. This is a nicely detailed and impressive image that leaves little to complain about. Visual clarity is very strong, revealing a great sense of fine detail. Close-ups are especially striking, highlighting every dirty pore and unkempt whisker on the soldiers’ faces. Depth is also impressive, bringing a life-like sense of dimension to the image. Colors adhere to a palette that favors browns, yellows, beiges, and greens, emphasizing the Afghanistan wilderness setting. Contrast is high but well balanced and black levels are solid and consistent.

The film is presented with an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix along with a Spanish DTS 5.1 mix. Optional English SDH and Spanish subtitles are also included. Nuanced, spacious, and absolutely assaulting when it needs to be, this is a powerful and fully enveloping track.

The only extras are a pair of deleted scenes.

JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack including Blu-ray, DVD & DIGITAL HD on August 19, 2014, including both an R-rated and Unrated version as part of the DVD Originals line from Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.  The film will also be available on DIGITAL HD two weeks early on August 5, 2014.

Despite some budgetary limitations, JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE is a solid action film and worth a purchase for fans of good war stories.

Well, the day of judgement is close at hand as DEVIL begins tonight at 11:59:59. TWO Shyamalan films in one year – whodathunk it?? DEVIL is the first installment of The Night Chronicles, a series of terrifying stories conceived by M. Synopsis:

Wow. It’s M. Night day – again – here at WAMG! Universal Pictures has released another tv spot for DEVIL, in theaters on September 17th.

Universal Pictures is going all out with their spine-tingling marketing for the first movie in its Night Chronicles supernatural anthology with the line, “for balance in the world, good and evil must coexist. But in an elevator with the DEVIL, only one will remain.” Watch the most recent tv spots and on September 17th, “Bad things will happen for a reason,” when a group of people stuck in a claustrophobic elevator realize that one of them is the devil. Yep, I’m definitely scared now!
