The Rock ‘n’ Roll Drive-in in Chaffee, MO (272 Drive-In Lane Chaffee, MO 63740) has become another great St. Louis-area place to see old movies (Chaffee is about 120 miles south of St. Louis). I there was ever a film deserved to be considered a classic then CASABLANCA is it, Even if you haven’t seen it before you’ll recognize much of the dialogue; it is probably the most quoted, and misquoted, film of all time. Humphrey Bogart is excellent in this career defining role as bar owner Rick Blaine who has come into possession of two “letters of transit” which guarantee the holders unhindered passage out of Casablanca. He has these as Ugarte (Peter Lorre), the man who asked him to look after them, was captured by the Vichy French police before he could get them back. Ugarte had been planning to sell the documents to Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), a Czech nationalist who is fleeing from Nazi occupied Europe to the United States via neutral Portugal. Things are complicated by the fact that Laszlo’s wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) had a relationship with Rick before the fall of Paris and he never really got over her.

Right up until the end we don’t know what Rick will do, perhaps he will let Victor and Ilsa have the letters, perhaps he will let Victor have them on condition that Ilsa stays with him or perhaps he will betray Victor and leave Casablanca himself with Ilsa. Bogart isn’t the only great performance; Ingrid Bergman is fantastic as Ilsa, there is a real chemistry between her and Bogart, Claude Rains is great as the French policeman who’s loyalty is likely to change depending on who he thinks is likely to be the most use to him and Paul Henreid’s restrained performance as Victor Laszlo is faultless too.

It is hard to say what genre this film is, it is one of the great romances, it is also a war film, a thriller and even has some subtle comedy moments. Don’t be put off by the film’s age or the fact that it is in black and white – CASABLANCA is a must see. Whatever your tastes you owe it to yourself to watch this at least once, although I suspect few people will only want to watch it just once.

Is CITIZEN KANE the greatest film ever made? On a technical level, it may as well be. It’s at least the most groundbreaking film ever made. On a storytelling level, it’s an amazing achievement itself in that Orson Welles used such avant-garde techniques yet maintained an engrossing story. It’s a film full of contradictions and works perfectly because of them. Its over-the-top yet subtle, experimental yet accessible, quickly paced yet requiring of patience. Its considered the greatest film because of how it incorporates all these trademarks and the fact it basically reinvented the rules on how to make a movie. This must be credited to both Gregg Toland’s cinematography and Robert Wise’s editing as much as Orson Welles’ direction. This is probably the first film that could be considered so visually dense it required multiple viewings.

Oddly enough, in spite of the vast array of technical advances introduced in this film, it’s the story that one remembers. Welles is so often praised as a director, it’s easy to overlook the fact he was an accomplished actor also. Because of his multi-layered performance, Kane is a sympathetic individual instead of a cold hearted capitalist stock character. The screenplay by Herman J. Mankiewicz is so superb many argue he deserves as much credit as Welles. The hype on this one is really deserved. It really may as well be the greatest film of all time and now you’ll have the opportunity to see it on the big screen at The Rock ‘n’ Roll Drive-in

Cinematic Triumph CASABLANCA Returns to Theaters Nov. 12th & 15th

“Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine”

Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid form one of Hollywood’s most unforgettable love triangles in one of the most well-known – and most quoted – movies ever made: Casablanca. On Sunday, November 12, and Wednesday, November 15, moviegoers everywhere will say, “Here’s looking at you, kid,” when Casablanca returns to cinemas across the country in celebration of the its 75th All screenings, which are part of the TCM Big Screen Classics series from Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events, will also include specially-produced commentary before and after the feature by TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz.

Set against the desperate backdrop of the titular Moroccan port city as World War II rages throughout Europe, Casablanca is the unforgettable tale of refugees who will do anything to escape the inexorable advance of Nazi forces and flee to America. As they wait for passage to the United States, they gather in Rick’s Café Americain, the nightclub owned by mysterious Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart). Then, one night, of all the gin joints in all the cities in all the world, in walks Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) and the storied freedom fighter Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), who have come to inquire about letters of transit that they hear Rick can help them obtain.

Casablanca won three Oscars® in 1944 for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. In 2002, the American Film Institute named Casablanca as the most romantic movie ever made, and in 2012 Time Magazine called it “the single greatest movie ever made.” Seeing Casablanca on the big screen is an experience no movie lover will forget, even as time goes by.

BONNIE AND CLYDE Returns to Theaters Nationwide August 13th and 16th

“This here’s Miss Bonnie Parker. I’m Clyde Barrow. We rob banks.”

Fifty years ago, Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde made Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway into genuine superstars, building on the tale of a real-life crime spree that had enthralled America in the 1920s. Bonnie and Clyde smashed through almost every cinematic taboo, combining violence, sex, romance, action and comedy in groundbreaking ways.

On August 13, 50 years to the day from its original theatrical release, Bonnie and Clyde returns to theaters nationwide, presented by Fathom Events and the TCM Big Screen Classics Series.  Nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Bonnie and Clyde won two Oscars and presaged a cultural obsession with public notoriety at any price.

Bonnie and Clyde will play in more than 600 theaters nationwide on Sunday, August 13, and Wednesday, August 16, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day.

For theater information, go to the Fathom Events site HERE

TCM Primetime host Ben Mankiewicz will offer newly produced commentary before and after the film — a movie whose legacy paved the way for films like Natural Born Killers, The Fast and the Furious and Baby Driver.

Its initial release, on Aug. 13, 1967, set off shock waves.  In his original review, Roger Ebert called Bonnie and Clyde “the definitive film of the 1960s, showing with sadness, humor and unforgiving detail what one society had become.”  The film’s poster showed the eponymous couple in the throes of death — a death that cemented their celebrity status.  And if there’s anything Bonnie and Clyde, as embodied by Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, truly hope for, it’s notoriety — to become known for their violent exploits.

Though it was made 50 years ago — and was itself a tale that had taken place 30 years prior to that — Bonnie and Clyde remains not just a great American film but also one that shows the seeds of our current cultural obsessions.  Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow would be even more at home, perhaps, in a society that glamorizes fast cars, violent lifestyles and celebrity status.  (It’s not hard to imagine the title duo Instagramming their every moment or broadcasting a robbery on Facebook Live).
