FERDINAND (2017) – Review

With the big holiday school break fast approaching, parents may be looking for a way to keep the kiddies entertained. Maybe they can be dropped off at the mall’s multiplex while the folks do some last-minute shopping (or exchanging/returning a few weeks from now). Perhaps the pre-teen action of the JUMANJI reboot may be a bit overwhelming, along with the new adventure in that “galaxy far, far away”. Well, hopefully they’ve been dazzled by the wonders of the new Disney/Pixar masterwork COCO (you parents and teens should see it, too). Like that recent flick, this one has a distinct Latin flavor, but it’s fairly mild rather than spicy. And it’s based (inspired really) by a 1938 Oscar-winning cartoon short from the “house of mouse”. However, those doing the “re-imagining” (stretching it from eight minutes to over one hundred) are the upstarts from Blue Sky, the animated feature branch of Fox (former hits include some Seuss flicks, RIO, and the looong-running ICE AGE franchise). Charging off the screen (if you pony up for 3D) comes that bovine pacifist, the bull named FERDINAND.

We meet the title bull as a calf on a ranch in Spain. There the powerful papas try to train their sons to be chosen for the honor of facing a matador at the local arena. But young Ferdinand has no interest in such violent pursuits, he’d rather smell the flowers. He does adore his daddy and is happy when his pop is chosen. Ferdinand waits for his return…and waits…until the truth dawns on him that he’ll never return to the ranch. Somehow the young bull escapes and ends up at a farm run by a little girl, Nina, and her father. Oh, and it’s a flower farm. The place is heaven for Ferdinand, who Nina raises as a pet. Soon the little calf reaches adulthood. He’s so big that now he can’t accompany Nina and her pop to the town flower festival. But big ole’ Ferdinand (voice of John Cena) won’t be stopped…that is until an agitated bee causes him to wreck the village until the police capture him. And then he’s sent back to his old ranch, reuniting with old boyhood chums, the queasy Guapo (Peyton Manning), timid wise guy Bones (Anthony Anderson), and the surly Valiente (Bobby Carnavale). Plus there’s a few new faces like the near-sighted Angus (David Tennant) and the genetically modified “Franken-bull” Maquina. Ferdinand is given a “calming goat” the hyper Lupe (Kate McKinnon) who becomes his mentor/coach since one of the bulls will be picked by retiring superstar matador El Primero (Miguel Angel Silvestre) to be his final challenge. Luckily a trio of sneaky hedgehogs helps them escape in a vehicle, leading to a big chase through the city that eventually lands Ferdinand in the arena. Is there any way the gentle giant can survive the big showdown with El Primero?

After lending his pipes to several straight-to-home-video cartoons, Cena proves to be a terrific vocal performer in his first feature lead role. His husky, deep-toned line readings still have Ferdinand’s optimism and youthful exuberance. He’s powerful and equally playful. Anderson is an endearing “motor-mouth” who brings some much-needed energy to every scene. Manning’s a likable doofus particularly when Guapo struggles to suppress his nervous nausea. And Carnivale is “muy macho” to the max as the tough Valiente. Tennant seems to be doing a riff on his TV Uncle Scrooge McDuck gig as Angus (a Scottish bull in Spain,,, maybe a tribute to Shrek?). The only casting misfire may be the usually hilarious Ms. McKinnon (so great in the GHOSTBUSTERS reboot) as the annoying, abrasive Lupe. The character is so aggressively “in your face” that it makes certain scenes almost an audience “endurance test”. Take a breather, and a few lessons from great toon’ sidekicks like Jiminy Cricket.

Remember when I mentioned the first adaptation of this tale was an eight minute short. There’s a big part of this flick’s problems. That kids’ book from Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson is a great bedtime story, its reading (or performing as some parents prefer) is about as long as that Disney Oscar winner. Hence six (!) writers are brought in to pad and streeeetch it out to feature-length. This plagued Blue Sky’s previous Seuss flicks (and doesn’t bode well for the new take on the Grinch next year). So now Ferdinand needs to have four best pals and that “comfort goat”. And hedge hogs (guess helpful mice are too played out after CINDERELLA). And if that’s not enough future toys to eat up time, there’s a corral near the bulls with three truly obnoxious show horses (thinking the accents are German or Austrian) who prance and pose in some trite comic “bits”. They help the story stop dead for several minutes while the horses and the bulls engage in a “dance battle”. There’s a touch of adult humor dropped in when the bulls who don’t make the arena “cut” are put in a trailer bound for the ominous meat-packing plant overlooking the ranch (the trailer door has a silhouette diagram indicating the different meat cuts..”flank”, “prime rib”, etc.). At one point I was reminded of the superior SAUSAGE PARTY when the bulls believe the trip to the “big show” leads to the soft life rather than their demise. Director Carlos Saldanha tries to keep things rolling with lots of manic slapstick, but several set pieces (the car chase, the market mayhem) drag on too long, although he does a nice riff on the old “bull in a china shop” cliché. The character design work on the animals is engaging, but why do almost all of the humans have such wide noses (I may be nitpicking, but it was distracting). Perhaps this film has been released too close to COCO (with its similar setting) making it even more mediocre. FERDINAND may fascinate the youngest. least discriminating viewers, but animation fans may prefer a fragrant stroll through a garden to this frenzied matinée filler.

BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT – Review

barbershopnewcut

This film franchise zeros in on something that many small towns and big cities (really the neighborhoods in said cities) share: mainly a place where everyone seems to gather. Some place aside from the obvious schools, city halls, and churches (or synagogues). It’s actually a business. There’s a popular corner diner, maybe a bar or pub, perhaps a locally owned clothing store. Well, for this neighborhood in the south side of Chicago it’s the hair salon known to moviegoers thanks to 2002’s BARBERSHOP. That modest little “slice of life” flick was popular that it inspired a sequel two years later (BARBERSHOP 2: BACK IN BUSINESS). The following year saw a spin-off (BEAUTY SHOP) and a TV series on premium cable channel Showtime. The scissors and shavers have been silenced for almost a dozen years, but now movie goers have another appointment with Calvin and his crew for BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT.

There have been lots of changes at Calvin’s (Ice Cube) Barbershop over the last twelve years. Sure, many of the hair stylists are still there. Jerrod (Lamorne Morris) and Raja (Utkarsh Ambudkar) are snipping at each other while old-timer Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer) offers unsolicited advice to all. One new addition is Rashad (Common) the eloquent hubby of the enterprising Terri (Eve), a much in demand hair artiste’. She’s part of the other big change at Calvin’s. The shop is now co-ed with a beauty parlor run by Angie (Regina Hall) splitting the floor right in half. One of their most popular beauticians is the bombshell  Draya (Nicki Minaj) whose provocative wardrobe attracts the attention of all the fellows and rises the ire of her lady co-workers, particularly Terri who believes that she has set her sights on Rashad. The biggest change has occurred outside the shop, as brutal gang violence has turned the streets of the South Chicago neighborhood into a war zone. Calvin fears that he and his wife Jennifer (Jazsmin Lewis) will lose their teenage son, hoops prodigy Jalen (Michael Rainey, Jr.) to those very mean streets. His concerns are so great, that Calvin secretly makes plans to move his business to a new location on the north side. But before this happens, the employees attempt to stop the bloodshed over the weekend by establishing the shop as a safe zone, a peaceful haven, by offering free cuts over 48 hours.

Just how many film franchises can Ice Cube keep juggling? He’s returned to this one after the action comedy tent poles RIDE ALONG and 21 JUMP STREET, along with the family friendly ARE WE THERE YET?. Here he’s a great anchor/straight man, setting up punch lines and diffusing altercations, along with being a strong, strict but fair father figure. In the workplace, Common makes for an equally impressive, co-anchor especially in the more serious debates over social injustice. It’s a shame that he’s saddled with the silly, sitcom-style infidelity subplot. We never believe that Minaj’s Draya is a serious threat to the fierce Eve as Terri. All her form-fitting outfits don’t distract as from Minaj’s tepid line readings. She’s a talented singer, but she’s not a polished actress quite yet. Cedric is still an entertaining blustery old buffoon although I had some trouble understanding his low guttural growls. TV stars Anthony Anderson (“ABC’s “Black-ish”) scores laughs as food hustler J.D., while new addition J.B. Smoove (HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) is funny as all-around hustler (real estate, pharmaceuticals, you name it) and barber “One-Stop”.

Full disclosure: I have not seen the previous entries in the film series, so I can only consider this current effort (with franchises most film goers will debate the merits ala’ “Two is better than the first.”). Director Malcolm D. Lee tries to keep “all the plates spinning”, but eventually the disparate themes of the screenplay by Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver crash and crumble on the multiplex floor. Every twenty minutes or so a character must deliver a proclamation or observation which halts any momentum of the story (“speech-i-fyin” is the slang phrase that comes to mind). The goofy caricatures and comedy stereotypes never gel with the very somber real-life tragedy that the script attempts to address. One minute Rashad is going down the list of those killed in the headlines and in the next he’s hiding out with Draja, and avoiding his wife Terri. It really trivializes the true situations, especially with the simple-minded ploy to stop the shootings. Free haircuts? Getting celebs to go viral? Shooting  endless cell phone video of Draya furiously “twerking” (ugly exploitation)? The well-intentioned hi-jinks comes off as a slap in the face to those truly working at lasting solutions. The hilarious and heavy-handed never mesh, particularly when a regular perishes (he may as well have had a target on his back) and becomes a martyr. Though the film has a very talented cast, BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT just doesn’t really cut it as comedy or “message’ flick.

Edit the Final Cut of New Indie Pic THE POWER OF FEW

Director/writer Leone Marucci and star Q’orianka Kilcher (Terrence Malick’s The New World) are inviting online audiences to determine the final cut of their new film, THE POWER OF FEW, with a ground-breaking digital editing contest, ‘Scene 64.’ Using raw film footage and editing tools on the film’s official website www.thepoweroffew.com, participants will have the opportunity to cut a scene from the film. One of the favorites, as voted by fans, will be used in the finished film and the winner will receive a screen credit.

‘Scene 64’ features Kilcher and co-star Jesse Bradford (Bring It On, Flags of Our Fathers), in an action sequence shot on location in New Orleans. The pair co-star with an ensemble cast including Christopher Walken (Hairspray, Wedding Crashers) and Christian Slater (True Romance, Very Bad Things) in the crime mystery. THE POWER OF FEW revolves around an enigmatic smuggling ring’s efforts to steal a priceless artifact. The story unfolds through the unique perspective of five characters who cross paths on a day filled with danger, hope and possible transformation.

Marucci and Kilcher are continuing the exploration of perspectives by welcoming users to the film’s official site where they can download pages of Maurcci’s script; access a video library containing all footage shot on location; and edit the scene as they envision it. Entrants will also have access to audio tracks from the film’s score by Grammy-winning Mike Simpson, whose composing credits include the film soundtracks of Fight Club and Zoolander and acclaimed work as co-writer/producer on the Beastie Boys’ “Paul’s Boutique” album.

First-time producer and star Q’orianka Kilcher commented, “We’re doing something that’s never been done before: we’re creating a direct connection between a passionate global audience and Hollywood, with an Internet connection being the only requirement. I love the idea of empowering people from around the world with this direct involvement.”

CONTEST TIMELINE:
  • May 18 – ‘Scene 64’ editing tools live on www.thepoweroffew.com
  • June 21 – First day to publish final cut in the Scene Gallery. Voting begins for the top fan favorite

Director Leone Marucci said, “From performance to design to direction, filmmaking in its purest form is a collaborative process. In the spirit of a story being told from multiple perspectives, it’s been our goal to create an interactive experience where we open up the creation of the film to the worldwide audience.”

THE POWER OF FEW producers continue their embrace of the collaborative filmmaking process with ‘Scene 64.’ During the casting process, first-time actress Stephanie Meilaq won the part of “Carmen,” by a vote hosted on the film’s website. The audience had direct control over the make-up department after the filmmakers asked for body location of tattoos to be sported by “Junkshow,” the key character played by Anthony Anderson (Transformers, The Departed), who’s character’s name was also picked by fans.

The ensemble cast includes Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation), Nicky Whelan (Hall Pass), Devon Gearhart (Changeling), Jordan Prentice (In Bruges), Navid Negahban (Fox’s “24”) and multi-platinum selling rap artist Juvenile.

The film was written, directed and produced by Leone Marucci under his Steelyard Pictures banner; produced by Q’orianka Kilcher’s iQ Films; Exec Produced by Todd Trosclair, Roy Kurtluyan, Whitney Kroenke; Produced by Jimmy Holcomb, Jay Thames, Roy Scott Macfarland, Fred D’Amico.
