28 Entertainment announced today the acquisition of the story rights to George Jones and his wife Nancy for a feature film project about the incredible life and career of the iconic country singer. The project, written by Dennis L. Baxter and produced by Baxter and 28 Entertainment’s Jay Hoffman and Brian A. Hoffman, depicts George’s life as a country music legend while battling his personal demons.
“Over the years we have been approached to make George’s life into a feature film, but it was not until Dennis Baxter became involved that we were confident the story could be told accurately. George and I started working with Dennis six years ago in crafting the life-long story. Knowing George had input in this film and that it will be told the way he wanted it told, I feel we are in good hands to collaborate with 28 Entertainment as we move forward with production,” said Nancy Jones.
Nancy Jones will Executive Produce and consult on the project. Baxter worked closely with Nancy and George on the story before George passed away on April 26th in Nashville at the age of 81.
“George had hoped to see the movie before he passed and worked with me to make sure the story was complete.” said Dennis Baxter.
Jones’ story is one of legendary talent, fame and success, while showing the dark side of alcoholism and drug abuse to levels that few people could survive. It is also a story of healing, renewed faith and the unconditional love that ultimately pulled him through the turbulent times. The script portrays a life that was torn apart by addiction in a very public way, and was saved by the incredible love story of Nancy and George.
“George’s career is one of the most celebrated of country music legends, and we feel it is important to tell his story for fans and music lovers around the world. We are huge fans of George and his music and look forward to working closely with Nancy as we bring his life to the big screen,” said Jay Hoffman of 28 Entertainment.
George Jones had 14 number one country hits and more than 150 songs on the charts, including his award winning single “He Stopped Loving Her Today”.
Jones was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992, named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2008 and in 2012 was presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. Along with his induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame he received countless other awards and accolades from ACM, CMA, Country Music Television, and of course, The Grand Ole Opry.
The deal was represented by Chris Corabi on behalf of 28 Entertainment’s Jay Hoffman, Brian A. Hoffman, and Dennis L. Baxter, and by Jeff Rosen of Greenberg Traurig on behalf of George and Nancy Jones.

Starring in, as well as producing WWZ, Pitt’s other starring vehicles have ranged from Greek hero Achilles in Wolfgang Petersen’s TROY to George Clooney’s forever-eating friend Rusty Ryan in Steven Soderbergh’s OCEAN’S 11, as well as superhero “Metro Man” in the animated MEGAMIND and Death in MEET JOE BLACK.

It’s not even fair to say how sexy Pitt was as smooth talker J.D. in Ridley Scott’s movie.
10. KALIFORNIA
Pitt gave the term “white trash” a whole new meaning when he played serial killer Early Grayce in Dominic Sena’s KALIFORNIA. According to this encyclopedia of knowledge, Early states that once you move to the Golden State, “first month’s rent is free. State law.” Who knew?
9. Se7en
The chemistry between homicide detectives David Mills (Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) was undeniable in David Fincher’s Se7en. This bar scene written by Andrew Kevin Walker was a discourse on the human condition made all the worse by Pitt’s devastating resolution at the film’s end. He transformed from a man into WRATH right before our eyes.
8. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
If there ever was a time when Pitt was the spitting image of Robert Redford, it was in this film when the actor played Paul Maclean in A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT. The hair, the twinkle in the eyes, the charming smile made a handsome combination.
7. MONEYBALL
As the General Manager for the Oakland A’s, Pitt made you fall in love with the game in Bennett Miller’s MONEYBALL. “How can you not be romantic about Baseball.” With a 2nd nomination as Best Actor as Billy Beane, we bet the farm that this likeable actor would be the one up at the podium at the 84th Academy Awards with the statuette in tow.
6. THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
Brad has us realizing that life is both interesting and difficult with many turns along the way in his the once-in-a-lifetime role of a man aging in reverse. Without a doubt, Pitt rightfully earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination in David Fincher’s amazing THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON.
5. TWELVE MONKEYS
Subject – Mental Patient Jeffrey Goines. Think psychotic version of Tyler Durden in FIGHT CLUB… which we’ll get to in a moment. Seeing his first of three acting Oscar nods, Pitt’s jittery, hand-flapping motions in director Terry Gilliam’s apocalyptic film had us as well as The Academy convinced of the “The Army of 12 Monkeys”.
4. LEGENDS OF THE FALL
This one deserved a full length photo of Pitt as Tristan Ludlow. As he mourned in the family cemetery by the gravesite of his fallen brother, we cried right along with the grief-stricken Pitt in Edward Zwick’s epic LEGENDS OF THE FALL. Released in 1994, that scene along with the flowing locks of hair, still has us swooning some 20 years later.
3. FIGHT CLUB
While were sure Tyler Durden would be at the top of most Brad Pitt ” Best of ” lists, FIGHT CLUB found it’s way into the third spot. In David Fincher’s film, we became willing accomplices of Durden’s rules to “NOT talk about Fight Club!”
2. THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD
The quietness of it. The stillness of it. The Assassination of Jesse James. Pitt’s understated performance made us empathize with the outlaw’s dignified death in Andrew Dominik’s THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD.
1. Inglourious Basterds
Nazi Hunter Lt. Aldo Raine demanded from his team “100 Nazi scalps” in Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. While this was quite the introduction to the merciless, unforgiving character, it was the final scene with Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz that solidified his performance for our Number 1 spot.
Yes, Brad Pitt has had his share of “fluff” movies. Thelma and Louise, Cool World, Johhny Suede. But these were early in his career and they were short-lived. Soon after, he proved his acting mettle with A River Runs Through It, Kalifornia, Interview With The Vampire, and Legends of The Fall.
These were the roles that got him noticed. Roles that made directors want to cast him because, not only could he fill seats with his matinee-idol good looks, but because he was quietly becoming a damn good actor. In Se7en, and 12 Monkeys, he made you believe he was Detective David Mills and mental patient Jeffrey Goines and he was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for the latter.
To his credit and Hollywood’s delight, Brad Pitt has since managed to float effortlessly between light, big budget, Hollywood, mass-appeal movies (Troy, the Oceans trilogy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and more serious and interesting roles (Seven Years in Tibet, Fight Club, Babel and Killing Them Softly). There isn’t much doubt that an Oscar is in the very near future for Brad Pitt.

With the first day of summer a mere two days away, Walt Disney Animation Studios has released this first trailer for FROZEN, the coolest comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen.
When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna (voice of Kristen Bell), a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell.
Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.
The studio also announced today that it has tapped a trio of talented actors to join the voice cast in FROZEN. I just came out of the Hollywood screening of WORLD WAR Z at the ArcLight Theater and I’m stunned and slack-jawed – it is that awesome! WORLD WAR Z is ridiculously good!! You’re rooting for every character in the movie. I have no words for how great director Marc Forster’s thriller is. Nevermind the “jump” scenes that will scare the livin’ daylights out of you.
Composer Marco Beltrami’s score is spot on. It had me teary-eyed in more than a few moments throughout. The writing was really smart, keeping the pace moving along in real time. Every scene is absorbed with no time to breathe in between transitions. No long dialogue scenes. No unneccessary back stories. You care about all these people because they are human beings like you.
Brad Pitt is so amazing – dude, seriously, where did you come from? How are you this good? He’s not over the top, he’s not kicking ass like every other action hero. His character is not trying work this out by himself.
The whole supporting cast is fantastic, particularly Daniella Kertesz as Segen, the IDF soldier – she is so tough, while others would just lay down and die. The underlying theme of this movie is that you must work together and if and when this happens, all the parts will be important for any of it to work. It’s a great ensemble, team-effort. I literally had my hand over my mouth for the final half hour of the movie.
I can’t wait to see this again – YOU MUST SEE THIS FILM!!
Meanwhile over in New York City, Times Square was overrun on Monday at the premiere of WORLD WAR Z. Stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale and writers Drew Goddard and Damon Lindelof walked the Z shaped red carpet and greeted fans. Later on Director/Executive Producer Marc Forster, along with Pitt, introduced the film at the Ziegfeld theatre.

This review was originally published in February. MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL never played theatrically in St. Louis (thankfully) and my review has been amended to include a look at the extras on the new DVD of the film.
MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL is a documentary from producer, director, cinematographer Stephen Vittoria about convicted cop killer and former Black Panther Mumia Abdul-Jamal (real name: Wesley Cook), an articulate, relatively intelligent radical with a distinctive speaking voice and a passion for public relations. Slickly produced, and with an excellent original score by Robert Guillory, the film is presented as a collective form of tribute to Mumia, with dozens of “witnesses” including Amy Goodman, Angela Davis, Dick Gregory, Ruby Dee, Cornel West, Peter Coyote, Lydia Barashango, Juan Gonzalez, and Linn Washington, all testifying on-camera to the brilliance of the subject’s writing skills. Mumia himself is represented through archival footage, voice-over, prison visitation footage, and by an actor portraying the convicted killer moping in his prison cell.
Before viewing, I had never paid much attention to the Mumia Abdul-Jamal case, but the film inspired me to do some research. While I’m aware that it’s possible for an innocent man to be framed, there appears to be little question regarding Mumia’s guilt and MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL doesn’t bother making an attempt to argue otherwise. It’s not a film like THIN BLUE LINE or PARADISE LOST that sets out to prove an innocent man is behind bars. Imagine if DELIVER US FROM EVIL, the 2006 documentary about a priest convicted of child molesting, focused on a bunch of celebrities gushing about the brilliance of the subject’s sermons, determined to put a halo on his head without once addressing his crimes. Abdul-Jamal is constantly referred throughout the film as “the most famous political prisoner in the United States”, but that’s inaccurate. A political prisoner is someone who is imprisoned for his or her participation in political activity. I hope one thing that Democrats and Republicans alike can agree on is that cop killing is not political activity. ‘Cop killer’ is the term that best fits Mumia is because that’s both the genesis of his fame and the elephant in the room. In 1981 while working as a cab driver, he engaged in a gun battle with Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Mumia was shot once by Faulkner while six bullets from Mumia’s gun hit the officer who died of his injuries. Mumia was tried, found guilty, and was sentenced to death. In 2010, judges on federal appeals courts cited a legal loophole in striking down Abdul-Jamal ’s death sentence, and the Philly DA refused to seek a new sentencing hearing. Abdul-Jamal , now 59, will spend the rest of his life in prison living among his own kind — thugs and criminals. It’s a fate he chose for himself with his actions but whatever else one might think of Mumia, he’s led an incredibly effective media campaign over the last 30 years. Through a combination of political correctness, a warped appeals process, and old-school con-artistry, Abdul-Jamal has fabricated a romantic persona for himself: the innocent political activist railroaded by the racist legal system. College students, Hollywood celebrities, and the usual race-baiting rebel rousers have taken the bait.
What proof would Mumia supporters would find acceptable for a murder conviction? It’s irrelevant because this film doesn’t even go there. What MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL does is attempt to excuse Mumia’s actions. The film spends a lot of time illustrating the social and political events that went on in Philadelphia during Mumia’s formidable years, circumstances which allegedly created the climate that lead to him shooting officer Faulkner six times. Comparisons are made, and images are shown, of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan, the Holocaust, the Vietnam War, as if dark chapters in history are somehow an excuse to kill a cop. The film introduces its own boogey man in the form of Frank Rizzo, the police chief and then mayor of Philadelphia. Rizzo had a volatile relationship with Philly’s black community during his tenure in the ‘70s. The film details a horrific incident in 1985 in which police dropped a bomb from a helicopter to end an armed confrontation with the radical black liberation group MOVE which touched off a neighborhood fire killing 11 people, including five children and the group’s leader, John Africa. This section, illustrated with gripping archival footage, is the film’s best. I had no idea the City of Brotherly Love was such a racial powder keg at this time and I learned a few things, but Rizzo was no longer Mayor when Officer Faulkner was murdered by Mumia. The Mayor was William Green, a liberal-leaning democrat and while the city’s racial unrest may have shaped Mumia’s worldview, it’s hardly a vindication for his crime.
MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL is clearly agenda-driven but what exactly is its objective? Everyone in it keeps expressing their desire to see Mumia walk free. Are we supposed to assume that he’s innocent of the crime he’s been convicted of even though the film presents no evidence of that? Did I miss a prerequisite film that laid that out for me? Or are they saying that he may be guilty but should be set free because his writing is so profound and his voice so important? Peter Coyote, who once had an acting career, says of Mumia: “His melodic, silky baritone is gone way too soon” (the timbre of Officer Faulkner’s voice is never described). Mumia enjoys international attention, lucrative book deals, publication in academic journals, speaking invitations, and a regular soapbox on taxpayer-funded radio. The French even named a street after him, so it seems he’s getting more attention as a prisoner than he ever would as a free man. In the film Cornel West merrily refers to the police as “the oppression apparatus” but if you are willing to kill a police officer in the course of his duties, the crime is significantly more serious in the eyes of society. Killing a cop undermines the justice system and makes it harder to enforce the law in general. That’s extra damage, and it makes sense to have a bigger deterrent to discourage it, therefore Mumia clearly deserved his seat on death row. It’s not that hard to understand yet MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL bends over backwards to excuse, rationalize, and demand society’s forgiveness for Mumia’s crime. We’re told that Mumia was forced to drive a cab at night because a radio gig he’d been offered, one that would have paid him a six-figure salary, came with the caveat that he cut his dreadlocks and he had way too much pride to do that. The film wants us to accept that Mumia was some great writer before he killed Officer Faulkner, pushing the paranoid myth that he was a skilled reporter exposing corruption in Philadelphia therefore was targeted and framed for exposing government malfeasance. It’s true that he had part time reporting jobs at some Philadelphia radio stations including the National Public Radio affiliate there and may have had a following, but he hadn’t worked as a journalist for over a year before he committed murder. Despite claims on the covers of his books, Jamal had never won any prestigious awards for journalism and any writings by him before he committed murder don’t seem to even exist (try finding them). MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL is filled with luminaries reciting Mumia’s writings, all written after his imprisonment, in angry, strident tones. Giancarlo Esposito in particular looks like his eyes are about to pop out of his head while San Francisco-area ‘spoken word artist’ Aya de Leon reads from Mumia’s book Live From Death Row while punching the air like Rosie Perez during the opening credits of DO THE RIGHT THING. Perhaps they’re angry because they’re asked to read Mumia’s stale, lofty-sounding Communist ideology and Black Liberation rhetoric. This grievance stuff may have seemed fresh 40 years ago but today with a black president in the White House, the sneering fury and non-stop victimization is just tiresome. His books reportedly sell well so I guess there’s an audience for this but the more you listen to Mumia and the more you hear testimony about his writing, it becomes clear that he’s a born manipulator who is playing the audience, using the drama of his incarceration to defuse and soft-pedal his crime.
While it’s well-made, watching MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL is a strange and maddening experience. Linking the obscene entitlement of a cold-blooded cop killer with the squirmy arrogance of his celebrity followers, it seems to take place in an alternate universe where right is wrong and up is down. Frances Golden, his “literary agent” actually whines that since Mumia doesn’t have access to a typewriter or a computer, he’s forced to write by hand and that his fingers have become calloused! Oh, the humanity! I’m sure Officer Faulkner would gladly trade the bullets in his skull for the poor baby’s sore fingers. Mumia’s written at least seven books from prison and he could probably write more if they would just give him a computer (and he wouldn’t get those boo boos on his fingers). When a British Pakistani writer named Tariq Ali says with a straight face “If there’s any justice in the world, they’ll award Mumia the Nobel Peace Prize, but I’ll bet they won’t”, I started to wonder if MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL was some sort of put-on. Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King Jr. are all recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize but does anyone outside of Bizarro World really think a convicted cop killer deserves to join their ranks? This film is clearly part of an international campaign to free a killer. If you’re interested in myths and mass ignorance, there might be something of interest in MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL but anyone with a conscience is advised to skip it. The best way to deal with someone like Mumia is to ignore him. Dick Gregory says in the film “One day we’ll find out Mumia was the voice of America!” God help us all if that’s true.
MUMIA: LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABDUL-JAMAL is defiant in its one-sidedness, and was criticized for spending most of its running time glorifying Abdul-Jamal (and for its long-winded title) and very little on the murder and trial themselves. Now that it’s out on DVD from First Run Features, the producers have attempted to rectify that by tacking on a bonus short film: Manufacturing Guilt which runs about 25 minutes. It’s hosted by the filmmaker Stephen Vittoria and immediately starts making excuses about how we must ‘understand the climate of the times’ to justify Abdul-Jamal’s homicidal urges . Vittoria attempts a mini-PARADISE LOST, raising supposedly provocative questions about the evidence and the verdicts. The problem is that all the conspiracies, when not imploding under their own weight, un-believability and ridiculous contradictions, can be refuted by the transcripts of the trial. There was no suppressed evidence, mysterious persons fleeing the scene, or witnesses threatened by the police. Vittoria simply regurgitates a bunch of long-discredited theories and makes up a few new ones. Abu-Jamal didn’t testify at his own trial and waited 20 years before releasing self-serving testimonial. My favorite wacko moment is when they trot out ‘Self-proclaimed hitman’ Arnold Beverly, who claims he was hired by shadowy nefarious forces to whack Officer Daniel Faulkner. Manufacturing Guilt is the only extra on the DVD except for an ad for ‘Prison Radio” which asks for ten dollars so you can listen to more of Mumia Abdul-Jamal’s whining.

On Monday morning, actor Brad Pitt was on ABC’s Good Morning America to promote his upcoming film, WORLD WAR Z. While talking to host George Stephanopoulos, the actor also reaffirmed that his partner, actress Angelina Jolie, was doing great after her double mastectomy. “Business as usual. She’s doing great and you know, when she wrote her piece, we had already come out the other end and feeling very good about it.”
Pitt’s next stop on his global tour will be in Russia.
The story revolves former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.
WORLD WAR Z opens in theaters this Friday, June 21st.
