KILL YOUR DARLINGS Official Trailer

Sony Pictures Classics has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming film KILL YOUR DARLINGS.

Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster, Michael C. Hall, Jack Huston, Jennifer Jason Leigh & Elizabeth Olsen and directed by John Krokidas, the film will hit theaters on October 16, 2013.

KILL YOUR DARLINGS is the previously untold story of murder that brought together a young Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William Burroughs (Ben Foster) at Columbia University in 1944, providing the spark that would lead to their Beat Revolution. This is the true story of friendship and murder that led to the birth of an entire generation.

”It’s really Ginsberg’s coming of age,” notes director John Krokidas. ”He showed up at Columbia, 17 years old, the dutiful son of his parents—a failed working class poet and an emotionally ill mother whom he took care of. He came to school thinking maybe he wanted to study labor law, until he met a young man named Lucien Carr who put an idea in his head that he should be a writer, and that they were going to start a cultural revolution called ’The New Vision‘ which was going to change society. So what really resonated for me, thematically, was this idea of being 18 or 19 years old, leaving the nest for the first time and trying to find your own voice, and feeling that you could do something important with your life, that you could change the world, and really make a  difference. And then of course, the end of the story being—they actually did.”

Kevin Cooper’s THE PAINTER Makes NYC Premiere At UrbanWorld Film Festival

the painter_one-sheet

Amarok Productions is tackling the tough subject of how violence is robbing the innocence of our youth in its current short film entitled THE PAINTER. Written and directed by Kevin Cooper, THE PAINTER’s poignant anti-violence film can be seen at UrbanWorld Film Festival on September 20th 5 p.m. and September 21st at Noon at AMC 34th Street 14.

Cooper partnered with non-profit organizations (UCAN and Youth Guidance) to include children from high risk areas in the filmmaking process. “It was inspiring working with these children…a film about the violence with the help of victims,” says Cooper.

Ron Caldwell (“Flight”) stars in the film and will be in attendance at UrbanWorld.

A boy, barely 12-years-old, lives in a world where violence surrounds him. His sole means of survival is to escape the violence outside by creating art. He is alone – abandoned for as long as he can remember. He begins this day like every other: quietly sipping a cup of coffee in his run-down kitchen, walls covered with newspaper clippings that chronicle the epidemic death toll in the inner city. Amid wailing sirens and a squawking police scanner, he sits uncomfortably…cleaning a paintbrush. An interviewer’s voice, unsure of what he is witnessing, asks the boy to explain his existence…his art. Though the police instruct the boy to “return to work”, the interviewer holds them off until finally the boy agrees to show us his art. Step inside the line…his art – a world at war. Are you ready?

“Youth Guidance is honored to partner with Amarok Productions on “The Painter,” a short film that creatively and poignantly shines a spotlight on the devastating impact of youth violence,” said Youth Guidance CEO, Michelle Adler Morrison. “The opportunity to audition for roles in this important project provided [our youth] with a transforming, once-in-a-lifetime experience they aren’t soon to forget.”

Cooper produced the NYU short “Red,” written and directed by Gary Nadeau, which won many awards including the Gold Medal Student Academy Awards in 1994.

After moving to Chicago, he was moved to action last summer when violent deaths in the city reached alarming levels. Cooper says, “I feel a responsibility to stand up and add my voice to the choir of people trying to help the most innocent of the victims by bringing awareness to what is essentially a warzone.”

Amarok’s co-owner and producer DeAnna Cooper adds, “There are very few things as pressing as the violence that plagues Chicago. So many children in these areas are suffering and cannot escape…they need our help.”

Amarok will show the film in Chicago, at Montreal’s World Film Festival and LA Shorts Festival, in addition to UrbanWorld, making this their third Oscar qualifying festival in their run to date. THE PAINTER will head to Italy in November as part of the San Marino Film Festival.

“Life in space is impossible.”

Watch Sandra Bullock & George Clooney in the brand new trailer for director Alfonso Cuarón’s GRAVITY.

“I was stunned, absolutely floored,” director James Cameron told Variety.

“I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.”

Here’s a preview to the soundtrack from GRAVITY by composer Steven Price.

When I spoke with Mr. Price recently during a phone interview on his work for Edgar Wright’s THE WORLD’S END, I asked him about his score for GRAVITY. At the time he was mastering the soundtrack for Cuarón’s film and was calling from the studio in London where he was putting the finishing touches to the album.

“GRAVITY has been an amazing experience. Because of where the film is based, up in space, and there’s no sound in space so there are no rules. The music can do things that it wouldn’t ordinarily do because the conventions of the sound in the film are gone. It’s been great fun playing with the conventions of how we can do things and doing them a little differently. I’m very excited about people seeing it because of what Alfonso has achieved – from the writing through the way it looks. It’s a complete experience so I’m looking forward to people seeing it in the cinemas and having the experience, both visually and with the music.”

“Of all the films I’ve ever seen in 3D, (some people love it and some people don’t,) it’s the most immersive – the experience. Being up in space and the way it’s been shot… the tension is quite incredible and it’s a very emotional film as well. The whole thing is a real journey with amazing performances and everyone is very proud of it.”

GRAVITY

Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone – tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.

But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

The film will be released in 3D and 2D and IMAX in US theaters on October 4th and in UK cinemas on November 8th.

TAMPOPO Screens at the Tenacious Eats ‘Movies for Foodies’ Event September 10th

tampopo-header

TAMPOPO is a beloved Japanese film from 1985 that is a paean to the joys of food. It will be screened next Tuesday, September 10th, as part of Movies for Foodies, a regular film series put on by the chefs at Tenacious Eats. This is a one-of-a-kind event where food is prepared and plated in front of you while you watch a film on the big screen. Tenacious Eats only works with locally produced food procured by them and hard-to-find ingredients imported from places that specialize in them. For each new film, the folks at Tenacious Eats write a new menu specific to that movie’s story. Sometimes the menu is literal and sometimes it is inspired interpretation. In all cases, each dining experience is different because each film is different. By integrating film and food, Movies for Foodies creates an original experience, a feast for the senses, an event that brings food and film, chefs and diners together. The location for the event is Meyer’s Grove at 4510 Manchester in ‘The Grove’ neighborhood of St. Louis. The doors open at 6pm, and TAMPOPO begins at 7pm.

tamp1

TAMPOPO tells of a trucker named Goro, who rides into town like a modern Shane to help Tampopo, a sweet young woman who has her heart in the right place, but not her noodles, set up the perfect noodle soup restaurant. Woven into this main story are a number of smaller stories about the importance of food, ranging from a gangster who mixes hot sex with food to an old woman who terrorizes a shopkeeper by compulsively squeezing his wares. Each interlude is insightful in some way about the role of food in Japanese life. Memorable scenes include ordering lunch in a French restaurant, a teacher at a finishing school trying to show a group of young women how to eat spaghetti Western style, a family eating the last meal made by their dying mother, and an jaw-dropping scene featuring a gangster, his moll and a raw egg yolk.

tampopo-2

So join Chef Liz Schuster and the Tenacious Eats gang at Meyer’s Grove Tuesday night for a five course TAMPOPO-inspired meal as well as five cocktails – preceded by music from the hot gypsy jazz band, Coco Rico!

tampopo-6

All tickets are $55.00 per person in advance and $65.00 at the door. Reservations are highly recommended. Seating is limited. Surrounded by sounds, smells, sight and passion, a Movie for Foodies dinner is the immediate gratification of the senses.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Brown Paper Tickets HERE

New RUNNER RUNNER Trailer Stars Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake

runner-runner-DF-11009R_rgb

Check out the new trailer for RUNNER RUNNER.

Princeton grad student Richie (Justin Timberlake), believing he’s been swindled, travels to Costa Rica to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Ben Affleck). Richie is seduced by Block’s promise of immense wealth, until he learns the disturbing truth about his benefactor.

When the FBI tries to coerce Richie to help bring down Block, Richie faces his biggest gamble ever: attempting to outmaneuver the two forces closing in on him.

Director Brad Furman came to RUNNER RUNNER fresh from the success of The Lincoln Lawyer in 2011. “I had a specific vision for RUNNER RUNNER, to create a journey down the rabbit hole for Richie,” he notes.  “The movie begins in New Jersey, and then Richie ends up in Costa Rica and a fantastic but corrupt world.”

“Runner Runner.” It’s an expression unknown to all but perhaps the most ardent gamblers.

For the uninitiated, here’s a quick explanation: In the game of poker Texas hold ‘em, each player is dealt two “hole cards,” which they keep to themselves. Then three cards are dealt face up – also known as The Flop. The fourth card dealt up is The Turn and the fifth card is The River.

Sometimes a player will get the two cards he needs on The Turn and The River – a very lucky break that is also known as “runner runner.”

For RUNNER RUNNER’s Richie to avoid jail, he’ll need an ingenious plan – and some very lucky breaks.

12 YEARS A SLAVE Featurette “A Portrait of Solomon Northup”

12 yrs a slave

In this new featurette from Fox Searchlight, the cast a crew of Steve McQueen’s 12 YEARS A SLAVE discuss Solomon Northup, the free man kidnapped and sold into slavery whose life serves as the inspiration for the movie.

“I wanted to tell a story about slavery, and it was just one of those subject matters where I thought to myself, well, how do I approach this? I liked the idea of it starting with someone who is a free man, a man who is much like everyone watching the movie in the cinema — just a regular family guy,” McQueen recalls, “who is then dragged into slavery through a kidnapping. I thought of him as someone who could take the audience through the ghastly conveyor belt of slavery’s history.”

Variety‘s review said,

“This radiant aesthetic, coupled with the rousing use of spiritual songs, provide a beacon of optimism amidst so much hate, once again proving cinema’s place as the ultimate human-rights medium. It’s a shame that such injustice was allowed to exist for so long — 12 years for Northup and nearly 250 for those less fortunate — and an even bigger disgrace that it takes a British director to stare the issue in its face.”

12 YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

The film will show at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6 and opens in limited release October 18.

12 yrs a slave_2

12 YEARS A SLAVE stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (TALK TO ME), Michael Fassbender (SHAME), Benedict Cumberbatch (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS), Paul Dano (LOOPER), Garret Dillahunt (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN), Paul Giamatti (WIN WIN), Scoot McNairy (ARGO), Lupita Nyong’o, Adepero Oduye (PARIAH), Sarah Paulson (MUD), Brad Pitt (WORLD WAR Z), Michael Kenneth Williams (“Boardwalk Empire”), Alfre Woodard (“Steel Magnolias”), Chris Chalk (“Newsroom”), Taran Killam (THE HEAT), and Bill Camp (LINCOLN).

The filmmaking team includes Director of Photography Sean Bobbitt, BSC (HUNGER, SHAME); production designer Adam Stockhausen
(MOONRISE KINGDOM); editor Joe Walker (HUNGER, SHAME); Academy Award® nominated costume designer Patricia Norris (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD) and Academy Award® winning composer Hans Zimmer (INCEPTION, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES).

Zimmer created a theme for Solomon that, like the character, keeps evolving throughout the film. “The theme runs all the way through the movie, and everything that happens in one way or the other is felt, seen, perceived by Solomon and his theme,” he says. “It takes on different colors and different moods, just as he does. And, like the story, the score has a cyclical nature.”

Most of all, Zimmer wanted to stay in tune with the film’s intimate humanity. “What I think Steve and all the actors managed to do in 12 YEARS A SLAVE is to figure out a way of telling a vast story in a humble way,” he concludes. “I use ‘humble’ as the greatest compliment I can give, because the humility of this film is what makes it so personal. The quieter the story gets, the more you lean in to be part of it.”

Sony Pictures Classics has sent us two brand new images for director Bennett Miller’s
upcoming film FOXCATCHER.

FOXCATCHER is a psychological drama directed by Academy Award nominee Bennett Miller (MONEYBALL) and starring Golden Globe winner Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo, Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave and Sienna Miller.

FOXCATCHER tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Tatum), who sees a way out from the shadow of his more celebrated wrestling brother Dave (Ruffalo) and a life of poverty when he is summoned by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (Carell) to move onto his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Desperate to gain the respect of his disapproving mother, du Pont begins “coaching” a world-class athletic team and, in the process, lures Mark into dangerous habits, breaks his confidence and drives him into a self-destructive spiral. Based on actual events, FOXCATCHER is a gripping and profoundly American story of fragile men who pinned their hopes for love and redemption on a desperate obsession for greatness that was to end in tragedy.

FOXCATCHER will be in theaters December 20, 2013.
