WHEN THE SAINTS screens Sunday, July 13th at 12:30pm at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar Blvd.) as part of The St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase

The St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, an annual presentation of the nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. The Showcase screens works that were written, directed, edited, or produced by St. Louis natives or films with strong local ties. The various film programs that will screen at the Showcase range from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Many programs include post-screening Q&As with filmmakers. Filmmakers of all ages within a 120 mile radius of St. Louis are strongly encouraged to submit their works, or at the very least attend the event to celebrate with us and the amazingly talented St. Louis filmmakers.

WHEN THE SAINTS  documents the story of one man’s mission to end sexual exploitation in the heart of Malawi, Africa, and his journey to discover that it begins in his own heart. Beautiful, honest, vulnerable, and wildly compelling, this story challenges us all to explore the unplumbed depths of our hearts. It calls us to care about justice for girls who are trafficked in rural Africa, and at the same time asks us to examine the ways we either dignify or exploit our brothers and sisters. Both thought provoking and universal, this film is a powerful tool to rally the saints with a greater cry for purity.

Check out the trailer for WHEN THE SAINTS:

Tickets for all film programs from July 13-17 at the Tivoli are $12 each; $10 for students with valid and current photo ID and for Cinema St. Louis members with valid membership cards. Advance tickets are on sale at the Tivoli Theatre box office (5-10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 2-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday). No phone sales, but tickets can be purchased online. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance tickets may be purchased at https://tickets.landmarktheatres.com. There is a $1 per-ticket service charge.

“So Let It Be Written. So Let It Be Done.”

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for director Ridley Scott’s EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS.

Starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley, the film will be in theaters December 12.

Earlier this year, moviegoers saw Darren Aronofsky’s superb NOAH with Russell Crowe in the lead, as well as 20th Century Fox’s SON OF GOD.

From the director of GLADIATOR and PROMETHEUS comes the epic adventure EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire.

Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharoah Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

Hollywood Costume Lands At The Academy

1 hollywood costume

This fall the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present the final showing of the groundbreaking multimedia exhibition Hollywood Costume in the historic Wilshire May Company building, the future location of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. Organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A), this ticketed exhibition explores the central role of costume design – from the glamorous to the very subtle – as an essential tool of cinematic storytelling.

The Academy is enhancing the V&A’s exhibition and will include more than 145 costumes from over 60 lenders. The Academy’s presentation will add more than 30 costumes to this landmark show, including Jared Leto’s costume from Dallas Buyers Club (Kurt and Burt, 2013) – a recent acquisition to the Academy’s collection – as well as costumes from such recent releases as The Hunger Games (Judianna Makovsky, 2012), Django Unchained (Sharen Davis, 2012), Lee Daniels’ The Butler (RuthE. Carter, 2013), American Hustle (Michael Wilkinson, 2013) and The Great Gatsby (Catherine Martin, 2013).

In addition, Hollywood Costume will showcase the Academy’s pair of the most famous shoes in the world – the original ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz (Adrian, 1939) shown with Dorothy’s blue and white gingham pinafore dress.

“We are thrilled to bring this innovative exhibition to Los Angeles,” said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy President. “Hollywood Costume invites visitors to see some of the most well-known costumes from their favorite movies and to explore the impact designers have in creating our most beloved characters.”

Upending the conventions of what is considered “costume,” Hollywood Costume reveals what is hidden in plain sight: that films are about people, and the art of the costume designer helps create their characters. On view October 2, 2014, through March 2, 2015, the exhibition brings together iconic costumes from Hollywood’s Golden Age, including costumes for Marlene Dietrich from Morocco (1930) and Angel (1937) designed by Travis Banton, and from modern classics such as Mary Poppins (Tony Walton, 1964), Raiders of the Lost Ark (Deborah Nadoolman, 1981) and Titanic (Deborah L. Scott, 1997).

Hollywood Costume is curated by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, Academy Award®-nominated costume designer and founding director of UCLA’s David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design, whose credits include National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Coming to America (1988) and the music video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (1983); with Sir Christopher Frayling (Professor Emeritus of Cultural History, Royal College of Art), and set and costume designer and V&A Assistant Curator Keith Lodwick.

“Cinematic icons are born when the audience falls deeply in love with the people in the story. And that’s what movies and costume design are all about,” notes Landis.

The exhibition is the culmination of a five-year effort to source, identify and secure objects from all over the world. The collectors who have loaned to the exhibition include major motion picture studios, costume houses, actors, public museums and archives, and private individuals.

EXHIBITION STRUCTURE
This innovative exhibition takes visitors on a non-chronological, four-gallery journey that tells the story of costume design from early Charlie Chaplin (The Tramp, 1912) to Man of Steel (James Acheson and Michael Wilkinson, 2013). Hollywood Costume includes montages, animation, film clips, and projections, supported by a specially commissioned score written by British composer Julian Scott. The clothes are exhibited alongside quotes and interviews with costume designers, directors, and actors discussing the role that costume plays in creating the characters on screen.

Act One: Deconstruction introduces the role of costume design in cinematic storytelling. This section explores the link between clothing and identity and how designers bring characters to life. Deconstruction features contemporary and period costumes from films including The Social Network (Jacqueline West, 2010), Dreamgirls(Sharen Davis, 2006), Fight Club (Michael Kaplan, 1999), The Addams Family (Ruth Myers, 1991), Dangerous Liaisons, (James Acheson, 1988), Barry Lyndon (Ulla-Britt Söderlund, Milena Canonero, 1975), The Virgin Queen (Charles LeMaire, Mary Wills, 1955) and Mildred Pierce (Milo Anderson, 1945). The costume designer’s research process is revealed using designs and sketches, costume fittings, budget breakdowns, and script pages with dialogue containing personality-defining clues.

Act Two: Dialogue examines the creative collaboration among great filmmakers, actors and costume designers. Using archival film footage as well as specially commissioned interviews, Dialogue explores five key director/designer pairings: Alfred Hitchcock and Edith Head, who worked together on 11 films including The Birds (1963); Tim Burton and Colleen Atwood, whose films together have spanned from Edward Scissorhands (1990) to Dark Shadows (2012); Martin Scorsese and Sandy Powell, who have teamed on films from Gangs of New York (2002) to The Wolf of Wall Street (2013); and Mike Nichols and Ann Roth, who have worked together for over 20 years on films fromSilkwood (1983) to Closer (2004). The Academy’s presentation of Hollywood Costume features a new interview with writer-director Quentin Tarantino and costume designer Sharen Davis, who collaborated on Django Unchained (2012). This section also explores how costume designers have worked within the rapidly changing social and technological landscape of the last century: from silent to sound, from black and white to Technicolor, and from the studio system of Hollywood’s Golden Age to multi-national corporations and art house “indies.” Censorship, remakes and genre will be deconstructed in a section devoted to historic and social context. It will show how costume designers have embraced the innovations in technology and animation, such as Joanna Johnston’s design for the animated character Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and the designs integrating motion-capture (“mo-cap”), exemplified by characters from Avatar (Mayes C. Rubio, Deborah L. Scott, 2009).

Act Three: Finale presents the most memorable and treasured costumes in cinema history, for Hollywood heroes, leading ladies, and femme fatales alike. They include those for Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale (Lindy Hemming, 2006) Marilyn Monroe as “The Girl” with the pleatedwhite halter dress in The Seven Year Itch (Travilla, 1955), Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl (Irene Sharaff, 1968) and Sharon Stone as Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct (Ellen Mirojnick, 1992). Iconic fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero costumes will also be on view, from films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Jany Temime, 2009), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Tish Monaghan, 2009), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (April Ferry, 2003) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Eiko Ishioka, 1992). Finale explores how beloved characters continue to inspire film lovers, ignite fashion trends, and enrich international popular culture.

Blue Boy the Hog at The Hi-Pointe Saturday Morning – STATE FAIR

STATEFAIR-HEADER

“Biggest boar in the world, I bet!”

statefair2

The Missouri State Fair has been in Sedalia since 1901. I’ve lived in Missouri all of my life, but have never attended even though I grew up with a pet hog named Blue Boy! I made that last part up but, I did once judge a pickle-canning contest. Okay, I made that up too, but Iowa seems to have the most all-American State Fair and you can attend it vicariously this Saturday morning when the 1945 classic musical STATE FAIR screens at St. Louis’ Hi-Pointe Theater as part of their Classic Film Series.

Statefari

STATE FAIR is the story of an average all-American family on the way to their state fair, with games and rides, cotton candy and candied apples, contests for baking, livestock, etc., and a lot of fun and angst too. The music by Rodgers and Hammerstein is just great, including the Oscar-winning song, “It Might As Well Be Spring” sung by Jeanne Crain, who made many a man’s heart go a-twitter back in the day, I tell ya! At the fair, she meets Dana Andrews. Dick Haymes is her brother who meets singer Vivian Blaine, and Charles Winninger and Fay Bainter are their parents. A state fair hook-up hoedown! Don’t miss it!

STATE FAIR

Now you’ll have the chance to see STATE FAIR in all of its big screen glory when it screens this Saturday morning (July 12th) at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, MO). The movie starts at 10:30am and admission is only $5.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE Plays Midnights at The Tivoli This Weekend

mst3k-header

“Into the weenie mobile, weenie man away!”

Okay, you have a big decision to make this weekend: do you seen RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD at midnight at The Hi-Pointe Friday and MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE at The Tivoli midnight on Saturday, or do you see MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE at The Tivoli midnight Friday and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD at midnight at The Hi-Pointe on Saturday? Either way, there’s a couple of fun midnight shows in St. Louis this weekend (read my take on the RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD screening HERE)

mst3kbdcap4_original

If you’re unacquainted with the origin of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE, a cult cable series on the Sci-Fi Channel, fret not. Think of Mad Magazine meets a live-action version of Beavis & Butthead, and you’re on your way to the moon. Instead of having Burger World’s Dickheads of the Month unspooling wisecracks over Ratt and Warrant video clips, you have two androids, Gypsy and Crow, and their human pal, Michael J Nelson, unspooling wisecracks over an endless stream of  Z-grade films. They are held captive aboard a bone-shaped space vessel by an evil scientist, Dr Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulie who also co-wrote the script), who plans to conquer the world by exposing Earthlings to celluloid crap and, in the movie, the choice of deconstruction is the 1954 sci-fi schlocker, THIS ISLAND EARTH (which is actually a good, if mildly cheesy, film – I’ve shown it at Super-8 Movie Madness). No household names with eye-candy looks, no costly visual trickery and certainly not much of a plot, MST-3K has less to do with science-fiction than the cannibalization of popular culture; their gleeful nitpicks are peppered with a litany of pop culture references from The Addams Family and TOP GUN, to Kate Moss, the Matsushita Corporation and even William Shatner. The namechecking may alienate some and the jokes are of a hit-and-miss variety but when it does hit, it hurts.

More Brains at The Hi-Pointe Midnights This Weekend! – RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD

Return_of_the_Living_Dead-header

“Send more cops!”

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD screens this Friday and Saturday nights (July 11th and 12th) at midnight at the Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s Late Night Grindhouse series.

Return_of_the_Living_Dead3

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1984) was a spin-off of the Living Dead series that resulted from the sharing of copyright between George Romero and NIGHT FO THE LIVING DEAD co-writer John Russo. While Romero went to continue the narrative with DAWN OF THE DEAD and DAY OF THE DEAD, both bleak social satire/horrors, Russo undertook a humorous and far more chaotic reprise of the original story. Russo wisely teamed with writer/director Dan O’ Bannon (a St. Louis native!), who pulled out all the stops for one gut-buster of an entertaining horror film. From a strip tease in a graveyard by Scream Queen Linnea Quigley to a massive showdown between the zombies and the law, and a way-over-the-top climax, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is a pinnacle of pitch-black zany humor. There’s nothing funnier than James Karen beating the split dog with a crutch or Clu Gulager uttering hilarious throw away lines, like, “Great, it hurts to be dead” and “We lied those aren’t rabid weasels”. The more I think about it, the funnier it gets.

Return_of_the_Living_Dead4

Unlike Romero’s zombies the ones in RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD move relatively fast and can speak (they use police radios, like a takeout service, to call for more reinforcements). Head shots don’t do them in any more, since even their severed body parts can move and grasp at prey. Thankfully they’re not just good make-up effects, but also have distinct personalities that add tremendously to the film’s fun value. And RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is a lot of fun, full of good humor and tongue-in-cheek genre touches (like the graveyard being named as ‘Resurrection Cemetry’). Russo, O’Bannon and the cast seemed to have had a great time making it and you’ll have a great time seeing it on the big screen again when RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD plays midnights this weekend at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s Late Night Grindhouse Midnight series.

Extended Look at Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Trailer

GOTG_Payoff_1-Sht_v4b_Lg

On Monday, moviegoers got an exclusive look at never-before-seen footage from Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY starring Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana. The first glimpse showed Pratt as Star-Lord assembling the Guardians.

The IMAX 3D First Look featured 17 minutes of exclusive footage of director James Gunn’s film.

We begin with an expansion of the sequence from the teasers and trailers of the Nova Corps scanning each individual guardian for their histories and arrest records (look for a glimpse of a major Marvel Universe baddie). Then there’s more of Peter Quill trying to retrieve his audio player with the “awesome mix” cassette from one of the jailers. After a detox spray the five are lead to the prison courtyard. Shortly Rocket formulates an escape plan and, due to unexpected circumstances, that plan is quickly put into motion. The Marvel logo concludes the scene with many quick action shots from the rest of the film. Groot and Rocket look to be the best team/bromance of the Summer. Can’t wait for August!

Missed the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY IMAX event tonight? Get a sampling with this extended look trailer.

(via Fandango)

“Movie fans having post-holiday weekend blues will get extra fireworks with this new ‘Guardians’ material,” says Fandango Fangirl Tiffany Smith. “We get our first extended intro to Groot, with Vin Diesel’s voice uttering the classic ‘I am Groot’ line, and Bradley Cooper bringing to life Rocket. The music, including The Runaways’ ‘Cherry Bomb’, gives us a cool retro vibe.”

To celebrate the upcoming debut of the action adventure film, Fandango is also launching a sweepstakes where fans can take home actual props used in two of Marvel Studios’ biggest movies.  Prizes include Captain America’s Stunt “Stealth Shield,” used in the action sequences from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” license plate from “The Avengers.”

The sweepstakes runs July 7 through August 4, 2014 and there are two ways to enter.

Moviegoers may receive an automatic entry by purchasing a “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie ticket or tickets at www.fandango.com or via Fandango’s apps.

Fans can also enter without purchasing a movie ticket by sending an email with the subject line “Fandango’s Guardians of the Galaxy Sweepstakes” to marketing@fandango.com, with the entrant’s name, email address, state of residence, and date of birth. Entrants must be at least eighteen years of age.  The full sweepstakes rules are available at www.fandango.com/guardians.

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18 (Jan. 1969), stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. The haunting story of THE GIVER centers on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound power of knowledge, he realizes that the stakes are higher than imagined – a matter of life and death for himself and those he loves most. At extreme odds, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all – a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before.

THE GIVER is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

The film opens in theaters on August 15.
