STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE

Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn rescue Queen Amidala, ruler of a peaceful planet invaded by dark forces. On their escape, they discover nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker, a child prodigy who is unusually strong in the Force.

Anakin Skywalker’s Podracer in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was created from an interesting collection of vehicles and props. The front of the shuttle, in which Anakin sits, was made from the shell of a 1960’s racing car called a Maserati Birdcage.

It took three to four months to create many of the intricate and lavish costumes worn by Natalie Portman as Padmé Amidala. Much of the fine detailing was hand stitched to couture levels by a talented wardrobe team.

In total, a team of 45 animators worked on Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The team created more than 60 digital characters, including Jar Jar Binks. A crew of 15 animators worked solely on the iconic Gungan from the planet Naboo.

Star_Wars-_Attack_Of_The_Clones=EVH_USE_ONLY=Keystones=English===EVH_USE_ONLY=2000_x_2818 (727x1024)

STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES

When Jedi apprentice Anakin Skywalker is assigned to protect Senator Padmé Amidala, he discovers his love for her…and his own darker side. Obi-Wan Kenobi uncovers a secret clone army as the galaxy marches towards full-scale war.

Look carefully at the head statues in the Jedi Archives that Obi-Wan visits in Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones. The busts are sculpted in the shape of some very famous Star Wars faces including George Lucas, animation director Rob Coleman, model supervisor Brian Gernand and visual effects supervisors Pablo Helman and John Knoll.

A secluded lakeside retreat in Lake Como was the romantic setting used as the location for Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala’s first kiss. George Lucas was on vacation in Lake Como – and in the process of writing the script for the movie – when he decided that the ultra romantic setting would be perfect for the film.

EP2_IA_69834_Rb_

The scene where Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan travel in an elevator at the start of Episode II wasn’t in the original script. George Lucas wanted to add an introductory scene to the movie to show how well these two characters get along, even though there is a little tension between them in the scene that follows.

C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels makes a cameo appearance in the movie’s club scene behind Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker. Daniels is not in his C-3PO outfit for the shot, but the actor’s face is clear to see. Can you spot him?

The calm Kaminoan race appears briefly in Attack Of The Clones. They are a very graceful and serene alien race – but they were completely CG in the movie. Fashion models and the elegance of tai chi inspired the movie’s animators in creating Kaminoan characters Taun We and Lama Su.

Star_Wars-_Revenge_Of_The_Sith=EVH_USE_ONLY=Keystones=English===EVH_USE_ONLY=2000_x_2818 (727x1024)

STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH

Clone Wars rage across the galaxy. The sinister Sith Lord seizes control of the Republic and corrupts Anakin Skywalker to be his dark apprentice, Darth Vader. Obi-Wan Kenobi must confront his fallen friend in an epic lightsaber duel.

In total, 72 sets created for Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith. The largest set was the stage where Anakin Skywalker has an epic lightsaber battle with Count Dooku [played by Christopher Lee in the movie].

Christopher Lee wasn’t on set when the fight scene between Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker was shot. A stunt man performed the fighting choreography and his face was replaced with Lee’s. In other parts of the scene, a completely digital Count Dooku was used, too.

EP3_ILM_338b_

Adding a mechanical arm to Hayden Christensen’s body in the movie’s bedroom scene was an interesting challenge for the Star Wars special effects team. During the filming of the shirtless scene, Christensen wore a blue glove on set. The special effects crew later replaced the glove with a computer-generated robotic arm for the finished film.

George Lucas and his two daughters make a cameo appearance in the hallway of the movie’s elegant opera scene. George’s daughters refused to appear in the movie unless their father joined them. In the finished film footage, the director has a blue face and can be spotted talking to his younger daughter. His oldest daughter is in the center of the hallway as Anakin Skywalker runs past.

Star_Wars-_A_New_Hope=EVH_USE_ONLY=Keystones=English===EVH_USE_ONLY=2000_x_2818 (727x1024)

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE

Young farm boy Luke Skywalker is thrust into a galaxy of adventure when he intercepts a distress call from the captive Princess Leia. The event launches him on a daring mission to rescue her from the clutches of Darth Vader and the Evil Empire.

Despite being a big-budget blockbuster, the creative team often built props as economically as possible. For example, the pod that C-3PO and R2-D2 use to escape in Star Wars: A New Hope was created from two paint buckets. It was only used in two shots in the movie.

Ben Burtt is a Lucasfilm icon who created the many sounds of Star Wars. To research the sound of the Star Destroyer at the start of Episode IV, he had a fairly unsuccessful recording expedition to White Sands Missile Range. The sound designer was invited to record a number of military and scientific rockets taking off – but the result was crackly and poppy rather than the deep, rumbling and booming rocket engine. The sounds couldn’t be used as he’d hoped.

EP4_x_4D_IA_884

Look closely at the asteroids in A New Hope. The creative team was criticized that their asteroid designs resembled potatoes – but if you look in the far distance during Millennium Falcon chase scenes of A New Hope, real potatoes were actually used!

Archivists at Lucasfilm recently discovered the original lightsaber prop from Star Wars: Episode IV. You can see the discovery in all its glory in the bonus extras from the new digital release, Star Wars: The Digital Collection. What else will you discover with the new extras? Between 1975 and 1978, Charles Lippincott interviewed the cast and crew of Star Wars: A New Hope. These tapes remained lost for 40 years… Until now! You can hear excerpts from the tapes in the exclusive extras for the new digital release.

Star_Wars-_The_Empire_Strikes_Back=EVH_USE_ONLY=Keystones=English===EVH_USE_ONLY=2000_x_2818 (727x1024)

STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

The Rebels scatter after the Empire attacks their base on the ice planet Hoth. Han Solo and Princess Leia are pursued by Imperials, while Luke trains with Jedi Master Yoda. Luke must battle Darth Vader and learns the shocking truth of his past.

In the Star Wars fan world, there’s a lot of controversy about the color of the coat Han Solo wears on the planet Hoth in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Many fans think the coat is blue, but it’s actually brown. You can see it in the bonus extras of Star Wars: The Digital Collection.

If Anthony Daniels fell over in his C-3PO costume, he couldn’t get up on his own. The costume wasn’t very flexible at all. In fact, the actor couldn’t sit down whilst wearing it. Whenever you see C-3PO sitting in The Empire Strikes Back, either you don’t see below the waist or Anthony would sit down on set without the costume and they would build it up around him.

EP5_x_EP5_IA_990

Which everyday kitchen item was used to create the sound of C-3PO moving in the early movies? According to Ben Burtt, it was a couple of ice-cube trays being bashed around.

Harrison Ellenshaw – Matte Painting Supervisor for Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back – is no stranger to Disney. Harrison is the son of Peter Ellenshaw, who was a matte painter for Disney for many, many years. Peter worked on iconic movies including Mary Poppins, Bedknobs And Broomsticks and Swiss Family Robinson – and he was named a Disney Legend in 1993. Harrison can be seen talking about the use of matte paintings in the Star Wars saga in the bonus extras for the new digital release, Star Wars: The Digital Collection.

Star_Wars-_Return_Of_The_Jedi=EVH_USE_ONLY=Keystones=English===EVH_USE_ONLY=2000_x_2818

STAR WARS: THE RETURN OF THE JEDI

The Empire prepares to crush the Rebellion with a more powerful Death Star. The Rebel fleet counters with a massive attack on the space station. Luke Skywalker confronts Darth Vader in a final climactic duel.

Listen up when the carbonite block in which Han Solo is encased falls to the floor in Star Wars: The Return Of The Jedi. What was used to create the sound of the carbonite mass hitting the ground? Ben Burtt simply recorded the sound of a big garbage dumpster outside his home.

The iconic shot of Han Solo breaking out of the carbonite block was an interesting challenge for the movie’s special effects team. The crew made a wax figure of Harrison Ford and shone a bright light behind it for part of the epic transformation.

EP6_KEY_74_R

It was a huge task to move the mammoth life-size puppet of Jabba The Hutt on the set of Star Wars: The Return Of The Jedi. The special effects team had to stand behind and inside the character in order to try and make him move as realistically as possible. There’s a crewmember in the tail of Jabba, along with two crewmembers on remote controls, which were used to move the tongue and the eyes of the behemoth character.

The sand dune backgrounds for the scenes in which Jabba The Hutt’s barge heads to the Sarlacc Pit were all shot in Yuma, Arizona. When the background scenes were being shot, a sound crew was sent into the dunes – but the main thing they captured was sand in their equipment due to the high winds in the area! Instead, the sound crew headed off to a local naval air station where they recorded jets landing and taking off. These sounds became the basis for a lot of the speeder bikes seen later in the movie.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT Free Screening at Webster University April 14th

“You still think it’s beautiful to die for your country. The first bombardment taught us better. When it comes to dying for country, it’s better not to die at all!”

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT screens Tuesday April 14th at 7:30pm at Webster University’s Winifred Moore Auditorium. The event is FREE

all55

The German program at Webster will commemorate the centennial of the end of WWI with three screenings of films about war and Germany with a brief historical introduction before each one.

all4
The film series kicks off April 14 with ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) — the first major anti-war film of the sound era, faithfully based upon the timeless, best-selling 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, who had experienced the war first-hand as a young German soldier. The film was advertised with the brooding face of one of the young German recruits sent into World War I. The landmark, epic film used acres of California ranch land for the battle scenes, and employed over 2,000 extras. From four Academy Award nominations, it won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director (Lewis Milestone with his first sound feature), and it was also nominated for Best Writing Achievement (George Abbott, Maxwell Anderson, and Del Andrews) and Best Cinematography (Arthur Edeson).

all3

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT is easily one of the most gripping, realistic interpretations of the horror of military combat. Also a rarity, it’s an American anti-war film told through the eyes of German soldiers. While some of the dialogue may be dated, and the early-sound film mix today seems muffled, the graphic and vivid scenes really bring out the horror and make you feel sympathy for all involved. Some of the dialogue is inspired, and stands the test of time – Soldiers mulling over just how a war starts (“One country offends another country”…”How can a mountain in Germany offend a field in England?”)

All Quiet on the Western Front

Some scenes in ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT are some of the most famous in movie history – a machine gun’s view of the carnage, indiscriminately mowing down hundreds of soldiers who drop dead six feet in front of the camera, soldiers ceasing to exist after a shell hit (all that remains, in one case, are the soldier’s hands, clutching a strand of barbed wire). The battlefields are miles of muddy, shell-cratered wasteland, the soldiers too numerous to count. The final scene, concerning a butterfly, is definitely one of the most startling movie endings of all time in terms of emotional power.

Rob Simonsen’s AGE OF ADALINE Original Motion Picture Score Available Digitally April 21; CD May 12

tumblr_inline_nme7rficbE1qmcog3_400

Lakeshore Records will release the AGE OF ADALINE – Original Motion Picture Score digitally on April 21st and on CD May 12, 2015.  The album features the film’s original score by Rob Simonsen (FOXCATCHER, THE SPECTACULAR NOW) and the song “Start Again” with Simonsen and Faux Fix, featuring Elena Tonra.

The AGE OF ADALINE, a romantic drama, stars Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Kathy Baker, with Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn and will be released nationwide by Lionsgate on April 24, 2015.

The film is directed by Lee Toland Krieger from a screenplay by J. Mills Goodloe & Salvador Paskowitz and J Mills Goodloe; story by J. Mills Goodloe & Salvador Paskowitz. Producers are Sidney Kimmel, Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi.

After miraculously remaining 29 years old for almost eight decades, Adaline Bowman [Blake Lively] has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones [Michiel Huisman] reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents [Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker] threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

“We all agreed that since the story spans the last hundred years, the orchestra was the appropriate instrument and tone for the score,” said Simonsen.  “While there are some ambiences and synthesized elements in there, they’re meant to add atmosphere for the most part, and not sound manufactured, per se.”

With a keen instinct for storytelling, Simonsen has established himself amongst a new wave of composers making a significant impact in the film industry. Under the mentorship of Mychael Danna, Simonsen apprenticed alongside one of the most respected film composers from the last two decades. In addition to co-scoring films like the Fox Searchlight hit (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, Rob provided additional music for films including MONEYBALL and LIFE OF PI, the latter of which won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2013.

Working independently, Simonsen garnered two 2013 World Soundtrack Academy Award Nominations for the Sundance hits THE SPECTACULAR NOW and THE WAY, WAY BACK. The same year, he scored the global ad launch for Apple’s iPhone 5 and provided the iconic piano music for their Everyday campaign.  His momentum continued in 2014, completing work on Zach Braff’s second feature, WISH I WAS HERE, and Bennett Miller’s multiple Oscar nominee FOXCATCHER.  Simonsen also recently completed work on Roland Emmerich’s much-anticipated STONEWALL.

STONEWALLImage1427911180
STONEWALL

Simonsen is a co-founder of The Echo Society, a composer collective presenting an ongoing concert series in Los Angeles, providing composers, musicians and artists a new and exciting platform to create and perform progressive musical works.   “Adaline’s theme is mostly heard on the piano,” Simonsen described. “We wanted something melancholic and pretty, yet not too sad. And while the love theme appears repeatedly throughout the movie, it is actually not heard in its entirety.  I wrote it away from picture and there was never a scene long enough to play it. However by repeating the opening phrases of the love theme, it has a quality of getting stuck in the ‘starting out’ mode, which is fitting for Adaline, who is stuck in time, repeating things in her life over and over, now a woman resistant to letting anything develop.“

Jean Dujardin Stars In THE CONNECTION Trailer

TheConnection_FinalPoster

From Drafthouse Films comes the new trailer & poster for THE CONNECTION, the action-packed European flip side to The French Connection, starring Academy Award winner Jean Dujardin.

Directed and co-written by Cédric Jimenez, THE CONNECTION was entirely shot on 35 mm and is the European flipside to William Friedkin’s The French Connection.

A stylish, 70’s-period crime thriller inspired by true events, it tells the story of real-life Marseilles magistrate Pierre Michel (Jean Dujardin) and his relentless crusade to dismantle the most notorious drug smuggling operation in history: the French Connection.

In his crosshairs is charismatic and wealthy kingpin, Gatean “Tany” Zampa (Gilles Lellouche), who runs the largest underground heroin trade into the States. Though the fearless and tenacious Michel, aided by a task force of elite cops, will stop at nothing–including boldly orchestrated drug raids, devastating arrests, and exacting interrogations–to ensure the crime ring’s demise, Zampa’s “La French” always seems one step ahead.

As La French mounts its retaliation, Michel will be forced to make the most difficult decision of his life: to continue waging his war, or ensure his family’s safety, before it’s too late.

The exciting FURIOUS 7 takeover also provides guests with an exclusive opportunity to get up close and personal with genuine artifacts from the new movie, including the 1967 Camaro that character Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) drives. Located on CityWalk, outside the AMC Theatre, the grey muscle car—with its 500 horsepower and 4×4 tires—offers fans a picture perfect photo opp through Sunday, April 5.

Authentic wardrobe worn by Dominic “Dom” Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) will also be on display exclusively at the AMC Theatres from Friday, March 20 through Friday, April 10.

The non-stop action and charged atmosphere shift into high gear as CityWalk’s state of the art outdoor concert venue, “5 Towers,” celebrates the FURIOUS 7 takeover with a D.J. party spinning songs from the film series’ entire music library, including new sounds from the latest movie soundtrack as part of the opening weekend festivities from Thursday, April 2 through Saturday, April 4.

Furious 7

Universal Studios Hollywood will join in on the takeover as the theme park prepares to introduce its all-original thrill ride “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” on Thursday, June 25.

“Fast & Furious—Supercharged” is a technologically advanced, epic ride that reunites stars from the Fast & Furious series in a groundbreaking mega-attraction, conceived as a new installment to the dynamic Fast & Furious films that can only be experienced at The Entertainment Capital of L.A.  Featuring characters made famous by Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Luke Evans, “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” will catapult guests into the high-stakes underground world of fast cars in a harrowing escapade—at perceived speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour—to save one of their own from an international crime cartel.

Located within Universal Plaza, a convergence of original Fast & Furious prop cars will be on display for guests and fans of the film series, including Dom’s 1970 Dodger Charger R/T.  The black, V8-powered car first appeared in The Fast and the Furious and has been a mainstay in every action-packed film since. The grey 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner that Dom first drove in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift will also be on display, along with the 1970 Plymouth Barracuda that belonged to Letty in Fast & Furious 6.  The car display will be available throughout the summer.

Check out this behind-the-scenes look at “Fast & Furious—Supercharged.” The 90-second footage offers insightful perspective on the making of this adrenaline-charged attraction along with interviews with Fast & Furious franchise cast members and stars of the ride, including Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson.

Fox Searchlight Pictures Acquires Davis Guggenheim’s HE NAMED ME MALALA

Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula announced today that the company has acquired worldwide rights less France and other French-speaking territories to the documentary HE NAMED ME MALALA, directed by Academy Award-winner Davis Guggenheim. Studiocanal will distribute the film in France.

HE NAMED ME MALALA is scheduled to be released in 2015.

The documentary, produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald under their long-term production partnership with Image Nation Abu Dhabi and co-financed by Participant Media, is an intimate portrait of Malala Yousafzai, who was wounded when Taliban gunmen opened fire on her and her friends’ school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley.

The then 15-year-old teenager, who had been targeted for speaking out on behalf of girls’ education in her region of Swat Valley in Pakistan, was shot in the head, sparking international media outrage. An educational activist in Pakistan, Yousafzai has since emerged as a leading campaigner for the rights of children worldwide and in December 2014, became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

“Malala’s incredible journey is both heartbreaking and inspiring. Her bravery in the face of adversity brought us to tears. The chance to bring her story to a global audience will be an honor for all of us here at Searchlight,” said Gilula and Utley.

“Spending the last 18 months with Malala, her father Ziauddin and their family has been one of the great experiences of my life. Now that Fox Searchlight is joining Image Nation and Participant Media, we have the opportunity to share their moving story with the world,” said Guggenheim.

“This project has been an incredible journey and we’re now pleased to be joined by Fox Searchlight Pictures, whose expertise will help ensure the film reaches as many people as possible with its inspiring message,” said Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of Image Nation Abu Dhabi.

Jeff Skoll, Participant Media’s Founder & Chairman commented, “Participant is thrilled that Fox Searchlight has joined this incredible team bringing Malala’s voice, and her efforts to insure that every young woman in the world has a chance to get an education, to audiences everywhere.”

The film’s producers are Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Executive producers include Mohamed Al Mubarak and Michael Garin from Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Jeff Skoll for Participant Media.

In a call to millions of other girls around the world and those who stand with them, the film will also launch an international advocacy and fundraising campaign in partnership with the Malala Fund, Malala’s nonprofit organization working to empower adolescent girls globally through a quality secondary education.

The deal was brokered by Fox Searchlight’s Executive Vice President of Worldwide Acquisitions, Tony Safford; Senior Vice President of Business Affairs, Megan O’Brien; and Senior Vice President of Acquisitions & Co-Productions Ray Strache, and Julian Zajfen at Ziffren Brittenham, which represented the filmmakers.
