Box office winner and Golden Globe nominee Will Ferrell (GET HARD, ANCHORMAN 1 and 2) will star in the comedy TOM’S DAD to be directed by Oscar nominated director Lasse Hallström (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY).

Principal photography on the feature film is slated to begin early next year, with further casting underway.

Set in 1960s Nevada, Arthur (Ferrell) is a struggling nightclub performer hoping to make it big with his stage act involving circus animals. He is forced to reconnect with his estranged 12-year old son, Tom, when his ex-wife departs on a three week trip, leaving the pair to rekindle their father-son relationship.

It was announced today by producers Joni Levin and Keith Clarke (THE WAY BACK, upcoming BEN HUR) of Point Blank Productions, Christi Dembrowski and Johnny Depp of Infinitum Nihil (HUGO, RUM DIARY, DARK SHADOWS) and Arsenal’s John Ptak (LET ME IN, THE WAY BACK).

Fortitude International, co-founded by Nadine de Barros, Robert Ogden Barnum and Daniel Wagner, is handling foreign sales on the project and is presenting it to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. De Barros is supported by her sales team including Katie Irwin, VP of International and Samantha Peel, Director of International Sales and Marketing.

Peter D. Graves (TERMINATOR SALVATION, W.) is executive producing, as well as providing marketing and distribution oversight.

Emmy-Award winning production designer Thomas A. Walsh (ABC’s “Desperate Housewives,” A&E’s “Longmire”) will co-produce.

UTA Independent Film Group is handling North American rights.

Martin Casella (ONE NIGHT STAND) wrote the original screenplay with revisions by Clarke.

“When great talent like Will Ferrell and Lasse Hallström connect so personally to great material, you have to believe the movie Gods are on your side,” said Levin.

“Will Ferrell is one of the most in demand actors working today who drives audiences to theatres given his likeable and charismatic persona. Combined with the sensibility and artistry of director Lasse Hallström, TOM’S DAD promises to be both entertaining and delightfully heartfelt,” said de Barros.

Amassing over $1 billion at the US box office, Will Ferrell has starred in an impressive list of successful blockbusters while also producing and managing his hugely popular website, Funny or Die. Most recently, he lent his voice to the box office smash THE LEGO MOVIE and starred in the hit GET HARD with comedian Kevin Hart. He next stars in DADDY’S HOME, with Mark Wahlberg for Paramount Pictures, which is scheduled for a late 2015 release and is currently filming the highly anticipated sequel, ZOOLANDER 2, opposite Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. His other credits include ANCHORMAN 1 and 2, THE OTHER GUYS, STEP BROTHERS, STRANGER THAN FICTION and ELF.

Swedish film director Lasse Hallström has been nominated for three Oscars during his distinguished career. He directed the classic THE CIDER HOUSE RULES starring Michael Caine in an Oscar-winning performance. The film also won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in addition to being nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. Hallström was previously nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for MY LIFE AS DOG. Last summer, Hallström’s film, THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY, starring Oscar winner Helen Mirren became a critical and box office success worldwide. His other directing credits include DEAR JOHN, CHOCOLAT and WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE.

Former CAA agent, John Ptak, founded Arsenal in 2006, which advises producers and filmmakers on the financing, marketing and distribution arrangements of independent films. Titles include Terry Gilliam’s THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSAS, LET ME IN, THE WAY BACK, WILD and U2 3D.

Producer Joni Levin and writer/producer Keith Clarke are founders of film and television production company Point Blank Productions. Their credits include THE WAY BACK directed by Peter Weir, starring Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Saoirse Ronan and Mark Strong and BEN HUR starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Houston, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, written by Clarke and produced by Levin currently shooting.

EVERY SECRET THING – The Review

eGF0haBgvVlk4YxRWpW-pzdtZOhK84ZpnNjQscV_w1c

Eight years ago, a baby went missing and two young girls Ronnie and Alice (Dakota Fanning and Danielle Macdonald) were convicted of the crime and placed in juvenile detention. They’re now both 18 and are trying to move on with their lives after having served their time. Detective Nancy Porter (Elizabeth Banks) thinks history is repeating itself when another young girl goes missing in the same town. Of course the two main suspects are Ronnie and Alice. But as Porter begins to investigate the girls and their families, especially Alice’s mother (Diane Lane), they unearth a web of secrets and deceptions that calls everything into question.

What begins as a slow and meditative character piece – showing how traumatic events from your past can affect your day-to-day life – evolves into a police procedural mystery without much intrigue. In fact, it doesn’t take long for the film to completely flat-line, never gaining any form of life after initially introducing the characters. Most of the time EVERY SECRET THING feels like it’s going through the motions. For a story filled with high stakes and heightened emotions, there isn’t much gusto behind the proceedings. A story filled with cold characters and harsh consequences is presented in an even colder light. I’m usually a fan of films that explore the dark underbelly of suburbia. Denis Vileneuve’s 2013 film PRISONERS is an excellent example of this type of film done right. Unfortunately director Amy Berg never gives the audience a character to care for or a reason to care about their outcome.

All the performances are on point; especially Fanning. Even if she’s practically typecast as the waifish, insecure girl who mopes around more often than not, you can see she’s trying to breathe life into this underwritten character. Newcomer Danielle Macdonald on the other hand is garishly over the top most of the time. She plays a character that is longing for attention, but instead comes across as an actress vying for attention in a film with bigger name actors. The rest of the cast delivers the script in appropriate fashion, but competent actors aren’t enough to fill the gaps in this film.

6ZYzVjZ9zVdAMeqSA2fOsaeax4R5gwUcrrPSBozVJYc

One of my least favorite elements to a mystery is keeping a fact that most of the characters know on-screen except the audience until late in a film for a reveal. Over an hour into a 90-minute film a secret is revealed about a character to add motivation for their actions. Sometimes this act of deception can work and add depth to previous events, whereas other times it just feels like a cheap ploy. The latter is the case in EVERY SECRET THING. Keeping a secret motivation like the one here from the audience for the majority of the film feels too much like the murderer in an Agatha Christie novel going on a lengthy monologue towards the end of the story explaining what their diabolical plan was all along.

For all that doesn’t work in EVERY SECRET THING, the film does show how easily someone can misread another’s personality, and how some stories can be misconstrued by others or the media. Amy Berg’s background working as a documentary filmmaker (especially her film WEST OF MEMPHIS) certainly helped with that. But what made those previous films work so well is that you got to know the people in front of the camera; you understood their problems but got to see them as real people as well. Even though EVERY SECRET THING is based on an acclaimed novel, I found myself caring less and less about the characters and their story as the film went on. It almost makes you wonder if Berg felt this same fatigue while making it. EVERY SECRET THING shows that you can have a talented filmmaker at the helm directing a talented cast and yet things can still not quite come together.

Oscar nominee Uma Thurman (NYMPHOMANIAC: VOL. I, KILL BILL: VOL 1-2, PULP FICTION) and Emmy and Tony Award winning actress Kristin Chenoweth (ABC’s “Pushing Daisies,” Fox’s “Glee”)  are set to star in the comedy THE BRITS ARE COMING, it was announced today by producers Cassian Elwes (DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, Lee Daniels’ THE BUTLER), JC Chandor (A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, ALL IS LOST), Robert Ogden Barnum (MARGIN CALL, LAWLESS), and Will Clevinger (upcoming LIFE AT THESE SPEEDS, MATERNAL BONDS).

In this broad comedy, an eccentric British con-artist couple, Harriet (Thurman) and Peter Fox, flee to Los Angeles to get away from paying a large debt to a notorious gangster after a failed poker game.  With the gangster hot on their trail, the pair scheme to win back the money by executing a jewel theft operation involving Peter’s ex-wife and her new husband, Gabriel. Chenoweth will play Gabriel’s pill-popping assistant, Gina.

Slated to start shooting in July, the comedy will be directed by James Oakley who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Michaelides. Further casting on the project is underway.

Fortitude International, co-founded by Barnum, Nadine de Barros and Daniel Wagner, will handle foreign rights to the project and will present it to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. De Barros will be supported by her sales team including Katie Irwin, VP of International and Samantha Peel, Director of International Sales and Marketing.

Oakley is a protégé of Chandor and previously produced and directed THE DEVIL YOU KNOW starring Rosamund Pike, Lena Olin and Jennifer Lawrence which Michaelides also wrote.

This new feature film is part of an ongoing collaboration between Fortitude International and producer Cassian Elwes. They previously collaborated on DAUGHTER OF GOD with Keanu Reeves, Ana de Armas (KNOCK KNOCK) and Mira Sorvino, which is in post-production.

“Uma Thurman is a gifted actress who excels in all genres and will showcase her comedic skills in THE BRITS ARE COMING, a hugely entertaining and hilarious script. Kristin Chenoweth is the perfect counterpart given her undeniable wit and charm which has been on display across television, film and stage productions,” said Barnum.

Uma Thurman is known to audiences for her memorable performance in Quentin Tarantino’s cult classics KILL BILL: VOL 1 and 2 as well as the acclaimed PULP FICTION which earned her an Oscar nomination. She was last seen in Lars von Trier’s NYMPHOMANIAC: VOL. 1 and will next star in The Weinstein Company’s ADAM JONES opposite Bradley Cooper, Jamie Dornan and Sienna Miller, coming to theatres in October 2015.

Kristin Chenoweth is a renowned award-winning actress who has worked across television, film and theatre. She won an Emmy for her performance on the ABC series “Pushing Daisies” and was nominated for two Emmys for her guest performance on Fox’s hit series “Glee.” She also originated the role of Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, which led to a Tony nomination and subsequently won the award for her role in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. She is currently appearing on Broadway in On the Twentieth Century for which she has earned another Tony Award nomination. Her recent feature film credits include 20th Century Fox’s box office hit RIO 2 and Universal’s THE BOY NEXT DOOR. This summer, Chenoweth will star in the Disney Channel’s live-action original movie DESCENDANTS.

Thurman is repped by Untitled Entertainment and Chenoweth by ICM Partners and Untitled Entertainment.

Production Begins On Andy Samberg’s TOP SECRET UNTITLED LONELY ISLAND MOVIE; Judd Apatow To Produce

wack-album-cover.original

Universal Pictures today announced that production begins this week on TOP SECRET UNTITLED LONELY ISLAND MOVIE, starring digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who are collectively known as The Lonely Island.

Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone, the comedy from producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Bridesmaids, upcoming Trainwreck) will be set in the world of music.

Taccone, Samberg and Schaffer have been friends since junior high school in Berkeley, California.  In 2000, the trio began writing, directing and producing its own brand of comedy and showcasing it on www.thelonelyisland.com.  The three writing partners are responsible for creating the popular SNL “Digital Shorts,” which reinvigorated the series and spurred many water-cooler moments over the past decade.

Some of the most notable shorts include their Emmy-winning “D**k in a Box” (with Justin Timberlake), “Lazy Sunday” (a rap about The Chronicles of Narnia) and “The Natalie Portman Rap,” “YOLO (featuring Adam Levine & Kendrick Lamar),” “I Just Had Sex (featuring Akon)” and “I’m on a Boat (featuring T-Pain).”  The Lonely Island’s debut album, “Incredibad,” was released by Universal Republic in February 2009 and is the first comedy album to reach No. 1 on iTunes.

“Not to be hyperbolic, but we are seriously zazzed about this movie,” said The Lonely Island.

“I have begged these fine gentlemen to allow me to produce one of their films since day one,” said Apatow, “and finally they decided my whining needed to come to an end.”

Joining the behind-the-scenes crew of THE LONELY ISLAND are director of photography Brandon Trost (This Is the End, Neighbors); editors Jamie Gross (Role Models, upcoming Vacation), Stacey Schroeder (Grudge Match, TV’s Key and Peele) and Zene Baker(This Is the End, Neighbors); production designer Jon Billington (World War Z, The Interview) and costume designer Sophie De Rakoff (Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama).

The feature film will be produced by Apatow, Rodney Rothman (producer of Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall; co-writer of 22 Jump Street), Samberg, Taccone and Schaffer and executive produced by Morgan Sackett (TV’s Parks and RecreationSeinfeld).

The TOP SECRET UNTITLED LONELY ISLAND MOVIE will be released by Universal Pictures worldwide.

Heading to theaters this summer on July 10th, watch the all-new trailer for MINIONS.

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s MINIONS begins at the dawn of time.  Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters.  Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain.  They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today, MINIONS is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda.  Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film.

WAMG Interview: Actor Michael Rooker – GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, Walking Dead

rooker-header

Pop culture comes to life in St. Louis next month! It’s the Wizard World COMIC CON May 22nd through the 24th at America’s Center downtown (701 Convention Plaza – St. Louis, MO 63101). As usual, Wizard World has an impressive line-up of celebrity guests including Elvira, Christian Kane, and George Romero, but the star I’m most excited to meet is actor Michael Rooker.

Michael Rooker was born in Jasper, Alabama in 1955. He has eight brothers and sisters. His parents divorced when he was 13 years old, and he moved with his mother and siblings to Chicago, Illinois, where he studied at the Goodman School of Drama. Rooker made his feature film debut by playing the title character in the gritty 1985 horror classic HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER. He followed this with significant big-screen roles in TOMBSTONE, DAYS OF THUNDER, CLIFFHANGER, JFK, MISSISSIPPI BURNING, SEA OF LOVE, THE DARK HALF, MALLRATS, THE BONE COLLECTOR, SLITHER, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA, SUPER and most recently as the alien Yondu in last year’s top-grossing smash GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but it’s his role as Merle Dixon in the first three seasons of The Walking Dead that’s really made him a household name

In advance of his appearance at the Wizard World Comic Con in St. Louis May 22nd-24th, Mr. Rooker took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to We Are Movie Geeks.

Interview conducted by Tom Stockman April 22nd, 2015

Rooker-in--Guardians-of-the-Galaxy---photo----Disney-Marvel--jpg

We Are Movie Geeks: I hear you’re coming to St. Louis soon.

Michael Rooker: That’s the story!

WAMG: Have you ever been to St. Louis before?

MR: Yes I have. I love St. Louis

WAMG: Your buddy James Gunn is from St. Louis.

MR: Indeed he is.

WAMG: How long have you been friends with James?

MR: He directed me in a movie called SLITHER about eight years ago and we became good friends.

Rooker-Stevie-2-1024x682

WAMG: And you’ve been in all of his films sits then. I thought you were great in SUPER.

MR: Oh yeah, thanks.

WAMG: Do you ever get tired of talking about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and The Walking Dead?

MR: Never, that’s such an awesome TV show and really a great film too so I never get tired of talking about that stuff.

WAMG: When you’re out on the street, what do most people recognize you from?

MR: Usually it’s the The Walking Dead but then after we start talking they realize that I was Yondu in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY which sometimes freaks people out when they make that connection.

Rooker3

WAMG: I’m an older fan. I saw HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER the weekend it opened.

MR: Right on man!

WAMG: It’s one of my favorite movies. How did you get the role of Henry?

MR: I was doing a theater piece in the time in Chicago. The director of that play actually did the prosthetic work for the film and he turned me on to the producers. They were having a hard time casting Henry so he suggested I go over there and meet with them. At that time, I had not acted in a film or any TV shows at all, so this was a great role for me to kick off my career with.

WAMG: Did you do some research on the real Henry Lee Lucas?

MR: A little bit. The director, John McNaughton, had some information for me and I looked up some myself as well. Lucas had done an interview with Barbara Walters and I watched that and I also watched some footage of him being interrogated by some Texas rangers. All that footage and all those interviews really helped me get a good handle on the role.

WAMG: I believe Lucas was still alive at that point.

MR: Yes he was, he died in prison about 10 years later I believe from heart disease.

rooker5

WAMG: It was a shame about Tom Towles, did you guys remain friends after filming the movie?

MR: Oh yeah, we stayed good friends after the movie. He and I and John McNaughton, we all hung out whenever we were in the same city and we saw a lot of each other when we were at different conventions and fan gatherings.

WAMG: Have your daughters seen HENRY and what do they think about it?

MR: Yeah they’ve seen it. It’s not their cup of tea but they understand it was just a role and they like some of the things I do in it. Most of my friends like everything I’ve done but my daughters are kind of picky.

WAMG: You got some great non-villain rolls after HENRY in films such as THE MUSIC BOX, CLIFFHANGER and DAYS OF THUNDER. I would have thought you would’ve been more of a horror guy. Did you turn down a lot of horror roles after that?

rooker6

MR: I did. I turned down a lot of roles that were basically the same kind of stuff, the same character. I could have done more stuff like that but I wanted to make sure that I didn’t get too pigeonholed in the horror genre or any genre really. If you look at my resume, you’ll see a lot of different types of films that I was in around that time. I was fortunate to be cast in the movie EIGHT MEN OUT. That was an important role for me to get because that’s the part that ended up getting me my agent and after that my career really snowballed and I kept getting role after role after role often in some pretty prestigious movies

WAMG: I watched JFK again recently. Your part in that film is huge. You have a lot of dialogue.

MR: Yes, JFK was a great role for me.

WAMG: What was it like working for Oliver Stone?

MR: He was a really cool dude, and great as a director. If you were in the zone, he would leave you alone. But if you were somebody who wasn’t putting out or being where you were supposed to be, he would let you know.

rooker4

WAMG: Were you offered the sequel to HENRY that was made a few years later?

MR: They talked to me briefly about it, but by then they couldn’t afford me.

WAMG: Are there any roles that you turn down that you regret?

MR: Yes but the HENRY sequel was not one of them! But sure, there were a few.

WAMG: Yeah, that Henry sequel wasn’t very good.

MR: Unfortunately you have a certain element that makes a good movie work and they didn’t have that element. They didn’t have me! Not to best my own drum, but after you do such an iconic roll like that, you can’t have someone else play that role. And you didn’t have the same director, John McNaughton. He and I were the key to the success of that movie. That combination was a magical one. It just worked.

WAMG: Who have been some of your favorite costars that you have worked with? I know you worked with Gene Hackman in MISSISSIPPI BURNING, and you worked with Kevin Costner.

MR: Oh, I pretty much get along with everybody. I do what I do and I have fun doing what I do but I don’t think I have any favorites.

rooker.660;660;7;70;0

WAMG: What was Hackman like to work with?

MR: I don’t know. I just had a couple of scenes in MISSISSIPPI BURNING and didn’t get to work with him. It’s unfortunate that Hackman has retired. He’s an incredibly talented actor but I guess if he doesn’t want to work anymore we have to respect that.

WAMG: You were certainly memorable in MISSISSIPPI BURNING.

MR: Thanks, that was a dynamite roll, I played a scary guy.

WAMG: You’re in St. Louis May 22nd–24th for Wizard world, Comic Con. Do you enjoy doing these types of conventions?

MR: If I didn’t enjoy them I wouldn’t do them. Absolutely! They are a lot of fun. There is a lot of energy at these things. They’re sort of exhausting but you’re meeting so many fans and I’ve built up a huge, massive fan base over the years and a lot of that is from meeting people at these things and getting pictures taken and such. It’s great to meet these guys and gals at the shows, if it wasn’t for the fans, actors would have nothing.

rooker1

WAMG: What do you think of the reception that The Walking Dead stars have been getting at these conventions? I went to Horrorhound convention last year and all the stars had decent lines of fans to meet them but Norman Reedus, his line went outside and snaked around the building.

MR: It happens. The Walking Dead for me and Norman, we became fan favorites right off the bat. As soon as people saw us together and saw the conflicts that were going on, it was just nuts and it still is. My character has been dead since the end of season three yet fans are still all in. Dixon brothers! Dixon power! It just amazes me. Doing the show was great while it lasted.

WAMG: What do you like to do in your free time?

MR: Oh, I do a lot of things in my free time. I’ll tell you what I don’t do. I don’t surf. I don’t swim anywhere where I’m not the head of the food chain. I love to shoot. I love all of the shooting sports. I am an avid gun enthusiast. I really enjoy the process of going out on the range and spending money on ammunition and shooting it all up.

WAMG: Have you had a film role where you had to do a lot of shooting?

MR: Yeah, I started shooting mainly because of the film roles I was getting. I started learning more and more about firearms and safety factors and how to make sure you’re in a safe environment when other people have weapons around you from a movie like TOMBSTONE for example, or any of these other cop dramas I’ve done. I grew up with five sisters so I’m used to looking out for people.

WAMG: What’s next for Michael Rooker?

rooker7

MR: I think I’m going to do MALLRATS 2.

WAMG: With Kevin Smith?

MR: Yeah, after 20 years! That movie’s fan base is now massive for such a tiny little movie. The fans of MALLRATS want to see a sequel, they want to see these characters come back so we’re going to do it. Kevin, and myself, I think we’re getting everybody involved.

WAMG: I think MALLRATS is a movie that most people did not like when it first came out.

MR: You’re right, it was not well received but it turned out to be just stupid enough that people have gathered around it and supported it and now we’re doing a sequel.

WAMG: Maybe it was ahead of its time.

MR: Oh it was definitely ahead of its time. But a lot of my movies seem to be ahead of their time.

rooker2

WAMG: What about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2?

MR: There’s been a lot of talk about it. James Gunn just did an interview where he talked about the characters and how he was going to expand on them, And Yondu, my character, is one of the two or three that you will learn more about for the next film.

WAMG: Well good luck with your appearance here in St. Louis May 22-24. I look forward to meeting you.

MR: Oh, St. Louis is going to be great.
