Ben Affleck Stars In New ARGO Trailer – In Theaters October 12

Here’s your first look at Warner Bros. Pictures’ and GK Films’ dramatic thriller ARGO, directed by and starring Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (“The Town,” “Good Will Hunting”). The film is being produced by Academy Award winner George Clooney (“Syriana”), Oscar nominee Grant Heslov (“Good Night, and Good Luck.”) and Affleck.

Based on true events, ARGO chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis—the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

ARGO also stars Oscar winner Alan Arkin (“Little Miss Sunshine”), Bryan Cranston (TV’s “Breaking Bad”) and John Goodman (“You Don’t Know Jack”). The main cast also includes Kerry Bishé, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, Zeljko Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, and Taylor Schilling.

Affleck is directing the film from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, based on a selection from Master in Disguise by Antonio Mendez. David Klawans, Chris Brigham, Graham King, Tim Headington, Chay Carter and Nina Wolarsky are serving as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Rodrigo Prieto (“Brokeback Mountain”), production designer Sharon Seymour (“The Town”); Oscar-nominated editor William Goldenberg (“Seabiscuit,” “The Insider”); and Oscar-nominated costume designer Jacqueline West (“The Social Network,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”).

This film has been rated R for language and some violent images.

THE POSSESSION Official Poster

Based on a true story, have a look at the first official poster for THE POSSESSION – the terrifying story of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. A pretty creepy face-hugger, wouldn’t you say?

But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

Academy Award Best Picture Winner THE ARTIST Returns To Theaters This Mother’s Day Weekend

The Weinstein Company announced today the re-release of Academy Award®  Best Picture winner THE ARTIST nationwide this Friday, May 11, 2012. This will be the last chance for moviegoers to experience the 5 time Academy Award® winning love letter to films in a movie theater – the way it was intended to be experienced, and it is the perfect opportunity for a Mother’s Day outing.

Said TWC President of Marketing Stephen Bruno, “As Summer approaches, we wanted to give audiences across the country one more opportunity to experience THE ARTIST in a theater where it has charmed and entertained so many this year. This is the perfect family outing for Mother’s Day weekend.”

THE ARTIST is the winner of five Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Score and Best Costume Design. It is the recipient of three Golden Globe® Awards – more than any other picture – including Best Comedy, Best Actor and Best Score. Jean Dujardin also won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor, and the film won the Directors Guild of America’s pick for Best Feature Film.

THE ARTIST stars Jean Dujardin (George Valentin) and Bérénice Bejo (Peppy Miller), and features performances by: John Goodman (Al Zimmer); James Cromwell (Clifton); Penelope Ann Miller (Doris); Malcolm McDowell (the Butler); and Uggie the dog. For young extra Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), it seems the sky’s the limit – major movie stardom awaits. THE ARTIST tells the story of their interlinked destinies.

Can your pet do tricks like Uggie? His trainer/owner Omar Von Muller has some pointers:

  • How can I get a dog into show business? Unfortunately showbiz is not an easy business to get into with our dogs, there are a lot of very talented pooches out there that could be in pictures, the best advice that I could give to anybody would be to work with their dog as much as possible, do research on the different behaviors that are most commonly needed for studio work.  There are a lot of videos on YouTube on tricks and behaviors and tutorials on training.  Once you think that you have accomplished this, only then you will contact different animal companies that you can find on the LA411 (for example) and talk to them and send them pictures or videos of your dog.  Remember that the animal companies will push for their own animals to get the job before anybody else’s and they do have very well trained animals, so if your dog is as good or better than their dog they would love to use them.
  • What are the easiest tricks to teach a dog? Besides the obedience exercises like heel, sit down, stay, come, when it comes to tricks, the easiest ones are probably to give their paw, roll over, crawl, play dead and to beg.  To teach how to give paw, it’s better if the dog is in a sitting position and it could be as simple as to hold his paw with your hand then you would lift it, give him a treat and repeat it until the dog starts lifting his paw on his own and then you keep giving treats and praises every time he does it.  Rollover, crawl and play dead are all tricks that come from the down position.  Once the dog is laying down you can manipulate the dog to do all these three tricks with your hands and give him his treats and praise when he does it.

Academy’s New “Film-To-Film” Preservation Includes THE LADY EVE, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, AIRPLANE!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has undertaken a unique expansion in film preservation. As the rise of digital technology drastically reduces the availability of film stock, the project accelerates the work of the Academy Film Archive to acquire and create new archival film masters and prints from at-risk elements. Under the banner “Film-to-Film,” the $2 million initiative, approved by the Academy’s Board of Governors, focuses largely on Academy Award®-winning and nominated films from across motion picture history, including works made as recently as the 1990s.

“This is a moment of great transition for our industry, and we are responding to the urgency of that moment,” said Dawn Hudson, Academy CEO. “By increasing our preservation efforts now, we are building a vital pipeline of films and film elements that we will not only safeguard, but also make available for audiences well into the future.”

Until recently, the mass production of film stock required for theatrical exhibition made this resource widely available and affordable for preservation work. However, as the industry continues its rapid transition to digital technology, film prints and the film stock required to create them are becoming increasingly scarce. The Academy’s Film-to-Film project is intended to take advantage of the remaining availability of celluloid stock to preserve a diverse slate of important works on film. At the same time, the initiative also ensures that high quality film elements will exist for easier, more cost-effective digitization in the future.

“Film-to-Film represents an extraordinary commitment to preserving our film heritage on film, but it’s also a part of our digital future,” noted Academy Film Archive director Mike Pogorzelski. “Once the industry has resolved the challenges still posed by digital preservation, including the lack of standard file formats and continuous technology migration, we will be able to scan these films without relying on brittle, fragile, or deteriorated elements.”

Between 1992 and the launch of the Film-to-Film project, the Academy Film Archive had preserved approximately 1,000 titles. Under Film-to-Film initiative, which began in 2011, the Archive has preserved or acquired about 300 more, including feature films, documentaries, experimental works, shorts and the home movies of Hollywood luminaries. A number of the initiative’s preservation projects are being conducted in partnership with other institutions, including the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the British Film Institute, as well as other archives in countries including Hungary, Norway, Sweden and Japan.

The initiative’s most significant feature film preservation efforts include “Sleuth” (1972), which earned four Academy Award nominations; “The Cardinal” (1963), which earned six nominations including Best Director and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Otto Preminger and John Huston, respectively; and “Cock of the Air” (1932), a comedy produced by Howard Hughes prior to the advent of the Production Code Administration.

Academy Award-nominated shorts under-going preservation includes Saul Bass’s landmark “Notes on the Popular Arts” (1977) and four short subject comedies from 1933 and 1935 currently on loan from the Library of Congress. Notable silent films include “The Mark of Zorro” (1920), featuring Douglas Fairbanks; “The Blazing Trail” (1921), which marked the screen debut of silent star Mary Philbin; and “A Famous Duel” (1911), a short directed by industry pioneer Edwin S. Porter.

Efforts are also underway to preserve a number of Academy Award-nominated documentary shorts including “The Odds Against” (1966) and “Naked Yoga” (1975), and the Oscar®-winning “Young at Heart” (1987), which chronicles two octogenarians’ romance.

The project is preserving a host of experimental and avant-garde works by such filmmakers as Stan Brakhage, Will Hindle, Nina Menkes, Penelope Spheeris and others; and reels of home movies from the collections of Steve McQueen, Esther Williams, William Wyler, Sam Fuller and James Wong Howe. Other reels being preserved document a range of subjects that includes Grauman’s Chinese Theater in 1926, Japanese-American life in Southern California prior to World War II, and behind-the-scenes footage from “My Blue Heaven” (1950), “The Prisoner of Zenda” (1937) and “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1968).

As part of the Film-to-Film project, the Academy has acquired a diverse slate of 35mm prints including “42nd Street” (1933), “The Asphalt Jungle” (1950), “Barry Lyndon” (1975), “Grease” (1978), “The Princess Bride” (1987) and others.

Dedicated to the preservation, restoration, documentation, exhibition and study of motion pictures, the Academy Film Archive is home to one of the most diverse and extensive motion picture collections in the world, including the personal collections of such filmmakers as Alfred Hitchcock, Cecil B. DeMille, George Stevens, Fred Zinnemann, Sam Peckinpah and Jim Jarmusch.
