Win A Family Four-Pack To The Advance Screening Of Disney’s WRECK-IT RALPH In St. Louis

©2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan – win a medal – but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?

WRECK-IT RALPH is in theaters in 3D November 2, 2012.

“Ralph is the bad guy in an old 1980s arcade game who’s wondering—after 30 years of playing his assigned role—‘Is this it?’” says director Rich Moore. “So, like a lot of us, he tries to solve an internal problem with an external solution: he’s going to try to win a medal—if he could win just one, he thinks he’ll earn the kind of love and respect Felix gets.”

“So Ralph embarks on this journey across the arcade to try to earn that medal,” says  producer Clark Spencer. “Of course, the real journey is for him—and everyone else—to realize that while he’s programmed to be one thing, it doesn’t mean that’s what he is on the inside.”

On his quest, Ralph meets tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty, and feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz from the candy-coated cart-racing game Sugar Rush, who may just be his first real friend. But everything changes when a deadly enemy is unleashed, threatening the entire arcade and Vanellope herself. Ralph finally gets his chance to save the day—but can he do it in time?

John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, is the executive producer of “Wreck-It Ralph.” “A good animated film like this does three things really well,” says Lasseter. “It tells a compelling story that’s unpredictable and keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, it populates the story with really memorable and appealing characters, and it puts that story and those characters in a believable world.

©2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

“One of the things I love about ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’” continues Lasseter, “is that we have four really unique worlds. One is the 8-bit world of Fix-It Felix Jr., one is the hyper-realistic world of Hero’s Duty, and one is the super-cute Sugar Rush that has a Japanese anime flavor. The fourth world is Game Central Station, which is inspired by Grand Central Station in New York.”

According to Lasseter, filmmakers pulled out all the stops—visual development, art direction, animation, character development, visual effects, lighting, cinematography and music—to shape and differentiate each of the worlds. Nearly 190 unique characters populate the worlds—three times that of any other WDAS film—each designed to fit within its own world. Tying it all together is Ralph, who’s on an epic journey to find acceptance.

“‘Wreck-It Ralph’ is a road movie,” says screenwriter Phil Johnston. “It’s just a little more complicated with four different worlds. But whether your character’s stuck in a small town or in a land made of candy, someone has left home in search of something bigger. Ralph may go to these fantastic, diverse places, but he’s always true to himself—even as his character evolves.

“One of the really cool things about this movie is that the characters are real—despite being arcade-game characters,” continues Johnston. “They’re real people with real feelings.”

That emotion is what will most appeal to audiences, says Lasseter. “The hallmark of a Disney film is the heart and it’s the foundation of ‘Wreck-It Ralph.’ It is one of the funniest films I’ve ever been associated with—so clever and beautiful. But it’s the heart that just catches you by surprise.”

©2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Adds Spencer, “The film takes place in the world of arcade-game characters with all the fun that goes with that, but at its core, it’s really a relatable story. We’ve all wondered at some point in our lives if maybe there’s something more out there. We’ve all imagined taking off on that adventure.”

“A good movie makes the audience feel like they’ve journeyed with the characters,” says Moore. “I think the audience will expect comedy and action. They’ll expect the state-of-the-art animation and spectacle that’ll blow them away. But I think they’ll be surprised by how much they’re going to love these characters.”

“Wreck-It Ralph” is directed by Moore (“The Simpsons,” “Futurama”), who won a directing Emmy® Award in the category of Outstanding Animated Program for “Futurama’s” “Roswell That Ends Well.” Moore also directed an Emmy® Award-winning episode of “The Simpsons” titled “Homer vs. Lisa and the Eighth Commandment.” Spencer (“Bolt,” “Lilo & Stitch”) produces. The screenplay was written by Phil Johnston and Jennifer Lee based on a story by Moore, Johnston and Jim Reardon.

Providing the voice of Wreck-It Ralph is John C. Reilly, who received an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the musical “Chicago” and starred in films including “Carnage,” “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “The Aviator” and “Step Brothers.” Emmy®-winning actress and comedian Sarah Silverman gives voice to Vanellope von Schweetz. Silverman starred in her own Comedy Central show, “The Sarah Silverman Program.,” and can be seen in the drama feature “Take This Waltz.” Tapped to voice Fix-It Felix, Jr. is Jack McBrayer, an Emmy® nominee for his role on “30 Rock” who can be seen in “The Campaign” and “The To-Do List.” Jane Lynch, who gives voice to Sergeant Calhoun, won Emmy® and Golden Globe® Awards for her role in “Glee.”

The voice cast also includes Alan Tudyk (“Suburgatory”) as King Candy, Mindy Kaling (“The Office”) as Taffyta Muttonfudge, Joe Lo Truglio (“Wanderlust”) as Markowski, Ed O’Neill (“Modern Family”) as arcade owner Mr. Litwak, Dennis Haysbert (“The Unit”) as General Hologram, Adam Carolla (“The Adam Carolla Project”) as Wynnchel, Rachael Harris (“The Hangover”) as Deanna, Edie McClurg (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) as Mary, Horatio Sanz (“Saturday Night Live”) as Duncan and Stefanie Scott (“A.N.T. Farm”) as Moppet Girl.

“Wreck-It Ralph” features cameos from both classic and modern real-life games. Lending their voices, among others, are Roger Craig Smith (Ezio from franchise “Assassin’s Creed”) as Sonic The Hedgehog, and from “Street Fighter,” Reuben Langdon as Ken, Kyle Hebert as Ryu and Gerald C. Rivers as M. Bison.

HEATHCLIFF Coming To Big Screen; Mischievous Cat Latest to Join Family Friendly Slate Including “Mr. Ed” and “ The Brave Little Toaster”

Family-based production outfit Waterman Entertainment has secured the feature rights to the iconic comic strip character HEATHCLIFF, it was announced today by the company’s Head of Development, Cooper Waterman. The acquisition comes on the heels of the company making similar feature film deals with rights holders of the iconic family brands including THE BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER and MR. ED. As is the case with those titles, HEATHCLIFF will be reimagined as a CGI/live action film with contemporary storylines, while preserving the original essence that the respective right’s holders created for each of the characters.

George Gately created the comic strip in 1973. Heathcliff was born on the wrong side of the tracks in the bad part of town. When both his parents were locked up by the law, little Heathcliff was left to fend for himself. He grew up quick and he grew up mean, until one day he was rescued by a loving family: the Nutmegs. They welcomed him into their home where he was treated with kindness and love for the first time in his young life. Though Heathcliff loved his new family, he would never lose his street-wise, tough guy beginnings

Waterman commented, “When working in concert with the creators and rights holders, you are able to tap their wealth of knowledge on the character and ensure the storylines remain true to the brand and their global fan base. This will allow us to confidently present ‘Heathcliff’ to a new generation and excite fans with new stories and plots.” Waterman made the deal directly with rights holder, Peter Gallagher.

Additionally, Waterman Entertainment retains global licensing and merchandising rights to HEATHCLIFF which they will leverage through producing thirteen original episodes of the wisecracking cat’s adventures for television. TOASTER, ED and HEATHCLIFF represent an arsenal of existing and successful family brands that can be developed into live action/CGI feature film properties. Steve Waterman has served as an Executive Producer on theatrical features including CASPER with Universal; ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED with 20th Century Fox; and STUART LITTLE and STUART LITTLE 2 with Columbia Pictures.

Scheduled to start production in late February 2013, 5 TO 7 is set in New York, where an aspiring novelist (Yelchin) has a cinq-a-sept affair with the beautiful wife of a French diplomat (Kruger). Cultures, world views, personal ethics and dietary preferences clash as love deepens, with remarkable results in this romantic comedy.

“Vic Levin’s script has us in tears — we’re just not sure if it’s from laughing or crying. We’re excited about the grace and intelligence that he, Diane and Anton will bring to their interpretations of his beautiful story,” said Curtis and Lynn.

“This is just a great script with a wonderful cast attached and filmmakers involved who have a fantastic track record. It exactly matches our criteria of offering only the very best in independent filmmaking to our clients. The response to the project has been overwhelming,” said Wilson and Nestel.

Acclaimed international actress Diane Kruger received critical recognition for her performance in Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, sharing a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. She was most recently seen in Benoît Jacquot’s FAREWELL, MY QUEEN co-starring Léa Seydoux which opened the 2012 Berlin Film Festival and was released domestically in July 2012 by Cohen Media Group. Her upcoming projects include the highly anticipated THE HOST, based on Stephenie Meyer’s new trilogy, alongside Saoirse Ronan, set for a 2013 release by Open Road Films, A.J. Edward’s THE GREEN BLADE RISES, where she will play Abraham Lincoln’s mother opposite Jason Clarke, currently in production and the newly announced THE BRIDGE for FX.

Anton Yelchin is a rising young actor who starred in the critically acclaimed indie hit LIKE CRAZY opposite Felicity Jones as well as Disney/Dreamworks’ FRIGHT NIGHT opposite Colin Farrell and Toni Collette. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL – The Blu Review

In 1982, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial became the biggest blockbuster of the year, and the world fell in love with a strange little creature, and the family who took him in. 30 years later, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is being brought to audiences like never before… on a 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray.

Nominated for nine Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Writing and Best Screenplay, the film took home four statuettes for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Sound and Best Music for John Williams’ (Jaws) memorable score. The unforgettable cast includes the adorable Drew Barrymore (He’s Just Not That Into You, Charlie’s Angels), Henry Thomas (Dear John, Legends of the Fall), Dee Wallace (10, “Sons and Daughters”) and Peter Coyote (“Law & Order: LA,” Jagged Edge).

Recently, I got the chance to sit down with Dee Wallace and speak with her about the film. Check that out here:

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL ANNIVERSARY EDITION BLU-RAY

Oh E.T., you haven’t aged a day! As for the Blu-Ray, the 1080p/AVC-encoded video transfer looks superb. You can’t really ask for anything better, especially when it was approved by Steven Spielberg himself. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround sound audio has been cleaned up as much as it can be for a 30-year-old movie. Still, the film has never sounded better. Check out how great this film looks in the clips below.

I DECLARE WAR – Fantastic Fest Review

If you’re school was anything like mine growing up, you may have been assigned to read William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, but if not, maybe you’ve seen one of two film adaptations that have been made. This serves as a jumping off point for better understanding I DECLARE WAR. No, this isn’t another remake of LORD OF THE FLIES, but it does share some of the classic thematic content. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s all right. It’s far from mandatory for enjoying this hidden gem.

Written by Jason Lapeyre and co-directed with Robert Wilson, I DECLARE WAR tackles the darker heart of what happens when innocent fun evolves into real-life danger. I can imagine the contemporary societal obsession with video games and the abundance of violence prevalent in these games as having an inspiration, but are the video games really the focal point? I think not. With the world we live in becoming increasingly violent and the access to real-time, uncensored live media not slowing, it could be read as commentary on what led these children to the film’s climax. Even this, as logical as it sounds, I don’t believe is at the heart of the film.

I DECLARE WAR follows a group of pre-teen aged kids in the midst of war. Not a “real war” — although an argument could be made that it becomes just that — but a “war game.” Here we have two opposing forces, in this case a band of 5-6 kids on either side, both led by their respective generals. For the group of kids through whose perspective the story is being told, the general is PK, played by Gage Munroe. If this kid looks familiar, you may have seen him in IMMORTALS (2011) on on the TV series ALPHAS. However, Munroe also has one of those faces that encourages a sense of deja vu, while his talent is impressive for delivering sophisticated lines of military dialogue with accuracy and conviction while still allowing the viewer to believe he’s just a kid.

As PK leads his troops through the local woods in search of the enemy’s base, which of course holds the all-important “flag,” they get ambushed by Skinner, played by Michael Friend. Skinner is not the opposing general, but rather one of his ranks gone rogue. Skinner and his small band of soldiers of fortune take PK’s best friend Kwon (Siam Yu) prisoner with the intent of getting him to talk, revealing the location of his base and therefor securing victory over the yet-to-be-defeated General PK.

Quinn (Aidan Gouveia), the general challenging PK’s undefeated status, desires to best him at his own game, proving he has the military mustard. Unfortunately, Skinner proves to be an obstacle that destroys Quinn’s hopes and threatens more than the fate of a game for Kwon and PK. When the game begins to unravel, the reality of childhood emotions begin to take over. Fear, paranoia, envy and anger become the driving force in a battle that turns ugly, pitting wits against rage. Meanwhile, Jess (McKenzie Munroe) becomes a wild card that could turn the tables of this war either direction with her cunning tactics driven by love.

I DECLARE WAR works so well, not just for the talent of its young cast, but because the filmmakers chose to make a family-friendly — that is, with parental guidance — film that takes on such a subject, but did so without dumbing it down or lightening it up. This is a rather dark, but realistically portrayed story of a series of events that I can absolutely see occurring in real life. No real guns are ever used by the characters, but their imaginations are depicted in such a way that the viewer is transported into their minds, allowing us to perceive the sticks and other various objects thrown together to vaguely resemble a gun, with creativity filling in the details.

While the film clearly focuses on children, I DECLARE WAR could also be considered a commentary on adults. Everything that occurs in this film, occurs between adults in real life. Simply change the setting and what’s at stake, and you have the rat race, etc. The film actually paints a pretty vivid portrait of a society that, for the most part, never truly grows up emotionally. We may think we do, but in most cases we just give these conflicts grown up names to make ourselves feel better. Food for thought.
