THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES First Trailer

Screen Gems has released the first trailer for the fantasy-action film THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES from director Harald Zwart (THE KARATE KID 2010). The film stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Lena Headey, Kevin Durand, Aidan Turner, Jemima West, Godfrey Gao, with CCH Pounder, with Jared Harris, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

It’s really trying to be the next TWILIGHT, isn’t it. Although CCH Pounder and Jared Harris add a little more weight to what could be the next big series for young adults.

Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Lily Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

Based on the worldwide best-selling book series by Cassandra Clare, her Mortal Instruments series is compiled of City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire. The prequels to the Mortal Instruments series are called The Infernal Devices (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, and Clockwork Princess). The last book of the Infernal Devices, Clockwork Princess, will be released March 19, 2013.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES is in theaters August 23, 2013.

WAMG Talks To HAYLIE DUFF

In celebration of LOVE COMES SOFTLY 10th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION and LOVES CHRISTMAS JOURNEY just being released on DVD, I got the chance to talk with Haylie Duff, who plays Annie in LOVE FINDS A HOME and LOVE TAKES WINGS.

Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the original LOVE COMES SOFTLY movie by reliving your favorite moments from the most-inspirational film series of the past decade with a new 10-Disc DVD Gift Set. The perfect gift to give a loved one or yourself this Christmas. Over 18 hours of beloved, heartwarming movies provides more value than ever! Each of the 10 movies are inspired by the best-selling book series from Janette Oke and include an all-star cast including: Katherine Heigl, Lou Diamond Philips, January Jones, Cheryl Ladd and many more.

Check out my interview with Haylie Duff here:

Being an actress, you get a lot of scripts. What was it about the character of Annie, and this script, that made you want to be a part of this?

Haylie Duff: Well, I knew as soon as I read this, I was definitely drawn to her and her relationships in the movie, and her being a pioneer in her day and age. A woman being a doctor, you know how difficult that is. I was also drawn to the fact that it was set in the 1800’s, and that they got to live through a time that’s so different from ours.

Several of your projects have been more Christian-friendly, such as “Seventh Heaven”, “Joan of Arcadia”, and this project as well. Is being Christian-friendly (when selecting projects) important to you, or is this more of a coincidence?

Haylie Duff: I think that it’s a fair amount of both. I think that it’s important to put out content that encourages people to believe in something, no matter, really, what it is… to find something that they really believe in, and encouraging people to be good to each other. The flip side of that is that I never really choose anything based on it being spiritual, I normally choose it based on the character. For me, with “Seventh Heaven”, I grew up watching that show, and I was a huge fan of it as a kid. When the role of Candy came along… she’s this girl who finds herself in this situation that a lot of girls… well, hopefully not a lot of girls… they find themselves in this situation being in college or in high school, and ending up pregnant. Dealing with that, and just how difficult that can be… but also how rewarding that can be without trying to glamorize it. It just shows that there are people who can get through it, and it gives them something to relate to. I tend to look for roles that tend to have something like that in them.

You mentioned that this is set in the 1800’s. What was the biggest challenge filming on a set portraying this time period?

Haylie Duff: The biggest challenge was erasing any sign of modern time. We don’t even think about some of the things we do, such as hand gestures, or certain inflections in things that you say. Something as simple as rolling your eyes isn’t something that was happening then. Things like that I definitely had to take into consideration. (Laughs).

I don’t know if I could do that! (Laughs)

Haylie Duff: (Laughs) It definitely took everyone looking out for each other and saying “Whoa! You did something that stood out!”

You recently got to go back and revisit your character of Summer in the animated version of “Napoleon Dynamite”. Did you have any idea that NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE would become the cult classic that it is?

Haylie Duff: I wanna say that we all kind of knew… There was definitely this feeling on set of unity. Everyone was really excited about what we were making, and [there was] a lot of laughter. I don’t think anyone knew that it would grow to what it has become. We all feel that it’s such a special thing, and I have life-long friendships from that movie. Efren Ramirez and Tina Majorino are two of my best friends, to this day. You know, I wanna say that we knew, but I don’t think any of us knew exactly what it was. To be able to go back, however many years later, and do it again was really special.

As an actress, is there any particular type of role that you would love to play, that you haven’t already? Or are there any new career ventures that you would like to embark on?

Haylie Duff: There are all kinds of things like that. They happen to change every so often. Right now, I’m focusing on my food blog called Real Girls Kitchen, and I am focusing on that. I just sold my first book. I just turned in my first draft this week. There are definitely aspirations.

In the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life and presidency, the full measure of the man—his passion and his humanity—came to bear on his defining battle: to plot a forward path for a shattered nation, against overwhelming odds and extreme public and personal pressure.

Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN provides an intimate immersion into the American leader’s most perilous and revealing moments, at a time when the dark shadow of slavery lifts and a country torn by war must be made whole.

A rich human drama plays out as Lincoln doubles down to end the devastating Civil War not merely by ending the war but by fighting to pass the 13th Amendment, permanently abolishing slavery. It will be an act of true national daring. He will have to call upon all the skill, courage and moral fortitude for which he’ll become legend. He will grapple with the impact of his actions on the world and on those he loves. But what lies in the balance is what always mattered most to Lincoln: to compel the American people, and those in his government of opposite persuasions, to alter course and aim higher, toward a greater good for all mankind.

Brought to life via a layered screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, Spielberg’s starkly human storytelling and the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis leading an accomplished cast, the film invites audiences directly into the heart and soul of Lincoln’s final achievements. The Lincoln who emerges is a man of raw paradoxes: funny and solemn, a playful storyteller and fierce power broker, a shrewd commander and a vulnerable father. But in his nation’s darkest hour, when the times demand the very best of people, he reaches from within himself for something powerful and everlasting.

Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones, LINCOLN is produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The DreamWorks Pictures/Twentieth Century Fox film, in association with Participant Media, releases in U.S. theaters this Friday, November 16, 2012.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY Spectacular Bloomingdale’s Holiday Windows In NYC

Photos: Kristina Bumphrey / Starpix for Paramount Pictures.

Bloomingdales unveiled their 2012 Holiday windows celebrating CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY, in New York City on Tuesday, November 13th, 2012. See the windows through the holidays at the store on 59th and Lexington in NYC!

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY, from Paramount Pictures and James Cameron, will be in theaters on December 21st, 2012.

From the big top to the big screen, Academy Award®-nominated director Andrew Adamson and visionary filmmaker James Cameron invite audiences on an all-new 3D adventure – CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY. Two young people journey through the astonishing and dreamlike worlds of Cirque du Soleil to find each other as audiences experience the immersive 3D technology that allows them to leap, soar, swim and dance with the performers.

Unique in scope, this immersive experience melds acts from seven live Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas — “O,” KÀ, Mystère, Viva ELVIS, CRISS ANGEL Believe, Zumanity and The Beatles LOVE — into a circus love story produced, written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). The film stars Cirque du Soleil strap aerialists Igor Zaripov (The Aerialist) and former artist Erica Kathleen Linz (Mia) as the young couple.

When Adamson chose acts from the seven live Cirque shows to use in the film, he picked those that would lend themselves to the storyline of Mia searching for the Aerialist from tent to tent. Each time she peels back the curtain and steps inside, another Cirque du Soleil world opens to her. These worlds are:

  • “O”“Water represents both life and the unconscious, the dream state and illusion because of its reflection,” says Pierre Parisien, Cirque du Soleil senior artistic director. ”It’s sort of the unseen realm of spirits, of ghosts, and the flying boat is like The Flying Dutchman. They are trying to lure Mia aboard but she won’t go.” It is the first tent Mia visits after she falls into an alternate desert wasteland populated by six big tops, “six kinds of limbos,” says Linz.
  • To Adamson was about spectacle, with a stage a quarter of the size of a football field that lifts vertically, spins around and changes. “What I wanted to capture wasn’t just the act and the performers but the ingenuity. Part of what Cirque does so well is combine art and technology and present you with this completely different imagery you’ve never seen before.”
  • MystèreMystère is highly acrobatic, the most acrobatic show we have,” says James Hadley, Cirque du Soleil’s senior artistic director for resident shows in North America. It is also the longest running Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas. Hanging from a cube in mid-air, an aerialist performs a ballet with seemingly effortless maneuvers, foreshadowing what is to come for the star-crossed lovers.
  • Viva ELVIS In the film, a mysterious self-propelled tricycle leads Mia to the Viva Elvis tent, where performers dressed as super heroes fly off trampolines to the music of Elvis.
  • CRISS ANGEL BELIEVE Mia travels through six Cirque du Soleil tents that occupy a limbo state between life and death in search of love lost. The seventh element is not a tent but Cirque du Soleil’s very own peculiar White Rabbit, a dancing disembodied bunny head from CRISS ANGEL Believe, who makes a timely appearance, beckoning her to follow.
  • zumanity “The act that we’re using from Zumanity is very small and contained, but it fits thematically well where we’ve placed it,” says Adamson. What first appears to be water on the moon transforms into a water-filled glass container from which a seductive contortionist entices the Aerialist to join her.
  • The Beatles love The act built around the song Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite is “a circus-based theme,” says Adamson, “so it tied us back into the beginning of our opening circus.” Hadley adds, “Actually Mr. Kite, of all the acts that we filmed, probably has the biggest number of artists in one act.”

Presented by Paramount Pictures and Academy Award® winner James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic), the film is a Cirque du Soleil production in association with Reel FX Inc., Strange Weather Films and CAMERON | PACE Group. Produced by Cirque du Soleil producer Martin Bolduc, Adamson and his Strange Weather Films’ partner Aron Warner, Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away is captured in 3D by executive producer Cameron and his CAMERON | PACE Group partner Vincent Pace, the film’s 3D executive producer. Executive producers are Cameron, Jacques Méthé, Cary Granat and Ed Jones. Director of photography is Brett Turnbull. Composer Benoit Jutras (Cirque du Soleil shows Quidam, “O,”. La Nouba and, as co-writer, Mystère) wrote the score and the opening song.   Stephen Barton contributed additional music to the final strap act. The editor is Sim Evan-Jones.

LOVE SICK LOVE – SLIFF Review

Review by Dana Jung

Just when you thought it was safe to settle back and enjoy a nice indie romantic comedy full of witty and insightful commentary on the nature of modern relationships, along comes the new film LOVE SICK LOVE. This is a movie that goes from plot twist to plot twisted.

The story begins with Dori, an attractive woman in the big city, phoning her current love interest, Norman. It is immediately established (with some humorous assistance from a co-worker played by comedian Jim Gaffigan) that Norman is a player. He has an eye for the ladies, is sleeping with his ex, and regards Dori as ‘casual sex’ as the cliche goes. Dori obviously feels differently, and invites Norman away to a secluded country home for the weekend. Ignoring Dori’s clear signals of attachment, Norman accepts and is soon plunged into a single man’s nightmare of dating and demented holiday celebrations.

To give any more away would spoil the many surprises concocted by director Christian Charles and screenwriter Ryan Oxford. They are aided immensely by good performances from a talented cast. Matthew Settle , a TV vet with credits from BAND OF BROTHERS to GOSSIP GIRL, plays Norman as a smooth and confident skirt-chaser, eventually breaking down into a foul-mouthed loser. Also on hand are seasoned pros M. Emmett Walsh and Charlotte Rae delivering some pretty hilarious lines. But the movie really belongs to Swedish actress Katia Winter (currently seen in the new season of DEXTER) as Dori. The film begins and ends with her philosophical narration on love’s sometimes strange turns in modern times, and we immediately identify with her plight – and that of all single women. Winter’s performance is key to holding the entire movie together, and keeping the tone on an even keel that does not tip too far into either farce or oversentimentality, showing just the right amount of outrage at the lack of commitment in most people. Right through to the end, we are rooting for her to find happiness. An intriguing mix of funny, dark, and poignant, LOVE SICK LOVE turns the rom-com formula inside out, and dissects it with a sharp eye on the nature of love.

LOVE SICK LOVE screens a part of the St. Louis International Film Festival on Thursday, Nov 15th at 9:00pm at Webster U./Moore and Sunday, Nov 18th at 8:30pm at the Tivoli Theatre
