In Case You Missed It: ‘The Snowball Effect: The Story of ‘Clerks”

incaseyoumisseditsnowball

Being a huge fan of Kevin Smith(both literally and figuratively) I must own every version of their Kevin Smith dvd releases. In 2004 they released ‘Clerks X’ to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of its release, and if it featured this badass, feature full length documentary called ‘The Snowball Effect: The Story of ‘Clerks”.

The documentary is a very in depth look at how ‘Clerks’ all came about, from getting written, financed, edited, and eventually picked up. We all pretty much know the story of how it came to fruitition but its still badass to see all the behind the scenes stuff that comes along with this doc.

I wish all directors went through the trouble of putting stuff like this on their DVD releases because it really adds value and rewatchability, which is something that is missing from alot of bare bones releases out there. Smith is well known for his love for the fans and this documentary just proves that again.

The documentary takes its name from a specific line in the film, if you dont know what that is, or dont remember then I cant take pitty on your soul and you should sit down to rewatch this classic. If you want to see this documentary for yourself you have to go out and buy ‘Clerks X’ which is something every movie geek should already own because the 3 disc set is ridiculously great. ‘Spread’ poster has arrived

spreadonesheet

I am not usually a fan of Ashton Kutcher films just because they are usually pretty cheesy, however I got a chance to see ‘Spread’ at Sundance and although I gave it a 3.5 rating, I would probably bump it up to a 4 now just because it has grown on my quite a bit. Kutcher plays a womanizing playboy who sleeps with rich single women in LA, who in turn provide him a stable place to live, money to buy clothes and food, and sometimes even a cars to drive. I know it seems like it would be a stretch for him to play this character(joking).

What do you guys think of the poster?

What’s going on with ‘G.I. Joe’?

Remember before ‘Punisher: Warzone’ came out there were all sorts of rumors floating around that it was so horrible they fired Lexi Alexander and were recutting it to be’ PG-13′? Then about a week later all the rumors were called out, Lexi was still on board and the movie released with an ‘R’ rating. Yeah, so that same thing is now happening with ‘G.I. Joe’ and depsite the fact that I am not excited at all about this film, it still doesnt deserve the rumor report which everyone is running.

When there is an official statement from Paramount that they have fired Stephen Sommers because ‘G.I. Joe’ had the lowest test ratings in the history of Paramount Pictures and they have brought someone else on board to re-cut the film then we will run it. Until then we are just going to say: What the hell is going on with ‘G.I. Joe’?

DVD Review: ‘Nobel Son’

The Movie

This film has an action packed cast, killer soundtrack that was done by Paul Oakenfold, and a plot that keeps you wanting more..but it did horribly everywhere it played, will it still do horribly on DVD? I dont think so..

‘Nobel Son’ was shot and finished in 2005, but just saw its DVD release on June 9th, almost 4 years later. To say the road for this movie has been rough would be an epic understatement. It was initially released in 2007 at the Tribeca Film Festival and met with a rash of negative reviews. It is also currently sitting at 25% of Rotten Tomatoes, so I needed to see what all the fuss was about.

The movie stars Alan Rickman as Eli Michaelson who is your typical sleeze ball professor, one that sleeps with his students and give good grades in return. When it is announced that he has won the Nobel Prize someone takes advange of the situation, kidnaps his son and demands a ransom, which just so happens to be the same amount that comes along with winning the Nobel Prize.

The kidnapper believes the ideas that helped him win the Nobel Prize were stolen from his dad, and he wants to bring some due justice to the memory of his father. When his son learns of the reason for his kidnapping he decides to join in on the whole thing and plays along to get half of the money.

Without revealing the entire plot line I will stop giving it all away, but there are a lot of plot twists and some of it is more difficult to digest than others but its a roller coaster ride that is worth giving a shot. I have no idea why so many people have it out for the film but I thought it was fun, smart and really enjoyable. Looking over the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes I see that some of the really big dogs(Roger Ebert) gave it a positive rating so maybe the great minds(myself) just think alike.

The Features

You would assume that a movie that has had such a wild ride to its eventual direct to dvd release would be action packed with bonus features, well you would be mistaken sir! The only feature that was worthwile was the commentary track featuring Randall Miller (Director, Writer, Producer, Editor), Jody Savin (Writer, Producer and wife of Randall Miller), Bryan Greenberg, Mike Ozier (Cinematographer), and Eliza Dushku (Current “It” girl, and costar of the film)

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5

JJ Abrams talking with Tom Cruise about ‘Mission Impossible 4’?

missionimpossible41

Empire news is reporting(via TV Guide Magazine) that Tom Cruise has been talking to JJ Abrams about coming back to do MI4. It would mark the only director to do a ‘Mission Impossible’ installment 2 in a row if they does sign on for it.

Here is what Empire posted about it:

Abrams reveals that he and the Cruiser have come up with “a really cool idea” and says that he’s “incredibly honored” to have been invited back.

It seems unlikely that Abrams would return to the franchise (of which he directed the really rather good part 3) as director though. A producer credit is more likely, leaving directing duties up for grabs. As producer, Tom Cruise’s previous modus operandi for the series was to give each episode a particular director’s stamp: hence the very stylistically different series entries from Abrams, Brian De Palma (part 1) and John Woo (part 2).

I wouldnt mind a 4th because I still really dig this franchise, especially if Abrams is on board to do it. What do you guys think?
