New TV Show Cancellations

dollhouse1-752371

Another week and another crop of shows have bitten the dust.   And now as that Queen song ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ bounces around my head, it will become apparent to most why a couple of these shows got the axe.   It’s always hard to see a bunch of shows go, even if they more than rightly deserved it.   To see something fail that people put time and effort and love into is a sad thing to have to witness.   So let’s get on with it and pay our respects to a few more fallen shows.

1. Hank- There was really no hope for this middling laugh track infested sitcom starring Kelsey Grammer about an executive who has to move his family back to the town he grew up in.   I’m not sad to see sitcoms facing death after death while more cutting edge comedies, with zero laugh tracks to hear from, thrive on and upwards.   Maybe it’s just I’m not a big fan of Grammer but I think his time for leading sitcoms has come and gone.   I found Back to You to be that not that bad but nowhere close to his glory days of Cheers and Frasier.   This show dies as well as his possibilities of ever getting another sitcom.

2. Eastwick- A few more people might care about this show because it at least had a bit more of an interesting concept than Hank did.   Basically inspired by the book and movie “The Witches of Eastwick”, the show followed a group of women living in New England with magical powers.   The show got very mixed reviews and apparently couldn’t attract a decent following even though it had the incredibly hot Rebecca Romijn leading the cast.   Even worse is that the show was so quickly yanked from the schedule that the few fans there were won’t even get a decent wrap up episode. Witches just aren’t as in as vampires right now I guess.

3. Doll House- Now here’s the one I really hate to have to report on.   I love Joss Whedon and really anything he did for TV was very special and inventive and never pandered to formulaic concepts.   Hmm, I wonder why this show got canceled then.   As Firefly before it, Doll House has is now facing the chopping block, but at least it got a better un out of it then that beloved sci-fi opus.   Eliza Dusku will be missed as she ran around in tight out fit after tight out fit and smart, edgy sci-fi takes another hit, which I fear Fringe might not be too far from sharing.   Potentially this show could’ve been saved if it hadn’t been relegated to its Friday death march, but there was probably nothing that really could’ve saved this very liked cult followed show.   It just doesn’t have the appeal of D-list stars dancing and making fools of themselves that apparently is the only thing people want to see right now.   FOX will graciously be airing the rest of the season come the beginning of December so enjoy this gem while it lasts.

New Season Surprises, and Some Not So Surprising

glee2

With all the new shows that the networks put out it can be hard to tell which ones will be sure fire hits and which ones just won’t click with anybody, not no way not no how.   So I decided to look at the new shows this season, the ones that are still around anyway, and look at the new stock that are doing surprisingly well and the ones that shouldn’t be too surprising are hits.   And I’d like to give a shout out to Trauma. Sorry Trauma, but it looks like the world doesn’t need yet another medical show, but at least Mercy seems to be hanging in there for the moment.

The Surprising:

1. Cougar Town- I’m sorry but I thought this show had disaster written all over it.   Mostly for the fact that its main focus is to just jumping on a fad that has sprouted up in recent years, a fad of super hot older women.   I guess that shouldn’t be too surprising of a draw but it just seems like the light version of Desperate Housewives with a one joke premise.   Plus after the failure of her show Dirt I’m surprised anyone really wanted to see Courtney Cox helming yet another show.

2. FlashForward-I really thought that this show was going to face an almost expected Heroes like failure, even though Heroes is still on but look at the ratings.   This show on the other hand has ratings to spare.   I guess maybe it’s just it has a Lost style of appeal and a catchy sci-fi plot that people really seem to be digging.   I haven’t really watched it and I’ve heard it’s good so I will at least give it props for that.   But usually good and sci-fi-ish plot don’t mix well with network viewers on a mass scale.

The Not So Surprising:

1.NCIS:Los Angeles-This really has to be at the top of the list because who wouldn’t have seen this being a monster huge hit? It’s become a tired and true formula.take a popular procedural, slap another cities name on the end, and boom you’ve got yourself an all new sure fire ratings hit.   I’m not a huge fan of procedurals or the fact that everyone else seems to love them and watch everyone stupid spin off they shoot down the line.   This one even has the added benefit of Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool Jfor your team up of having two washed up stars being the leads.

2. Glee-Who doesn’t love Glee?   This show had hit written all over it the second it aired on the tube.   You’ve got your basic High School drama that all the teens love these days.   Then you have kids singing harmonized versions of hit songs that I will admit that I even love.   And for added effect you thrown in a little Jane Lynch as one of the best and kookiest villains this side of John Adams High, Boy Meets World reference for all you TV geeks.   So that’s all you really need to have probably the best new show of the season and its future secure for quite awhile.

3. Modern Family-It’s a really a how the whole “modern” family can love.   God I can’t believe I went with that pun.   Anyway, this show is a no surprise hit for a very good reason, it does its humor smart.  It keeps it very family oriented and never going too vulgar but also keeps the jokes fresh and inventive and always with a witty tone.   I watched the pilot and have to say I was convinced enough of the goodness of the show and usually the pilot is the weakest of the episodes you can get.   So it should be no surprise that it keeps chugging along as a hit and one of the better reviewed shows of the season so far.

Thursday Night Scares Up Some Good Comedy

COMMUNITY-on-NBC-Halloween-Epis-8-550x366

There are two bits of good news to report about NBC’s Thursday night comedies.   One is that every single show was able to pull off their Halloween episodes perfectly and they were all hilarious as ever, even you Community.   The second piece of news is that NBC has decided to order full seasons of Community and Parks and Recreation! YAY!!   This is really good news for Parks and Recreation which, even though having an amazingly gut-busting season this year, has been struggling hard in the ratings.   There was even a worry that this show might be on the chopping block of shows to soon get the axe but it appears rave critical reviews and a loyal fan base will at least allow it to finish out the year.   And now for the cavalcade of Halloween episodes!

I did like Community’s attempt at a Halloween episode as it featured everything you think would go wrong at a Community College Extra Credit Earning Spanish Class Halloween Party hosted by Annie the jittery ex high school nerd.   You have Chevy Chase’s character accidentally taking some ecstacy and losing it while dressed in a pretty hilarious Beastmaster outfit.  Then there’s Jeff thinking of himself yet again as he tries to score with his insanely hot History teacher but failing on all cylinders.   And Brita dressed in a pretty odd squirrel costume, though I did love the giant acorn, as she tries to stop Shirley from messing up Jeff’s moves.   All in all a good episode which was completely saved by Ahmed dressing up as Batman and of course putting on a whole Dark Knight routine but he did save Jeff and Chevy from a pretty horrible fate and that was pretty brilliant.

Parks and Recreation also went with the Halloween party route as Anne through one of the lamest parties imaginable.   Luckily Tom showed up dressed as T-Pain and saved that party like only a rapper could, he turned on music, that’s pretty much all you have to do.   We did get a little bit more info on Tom and his wife’s fake marriage and how they are going to get divorced and the look on Tom’s face shows he’s not ready for that loss. Leslie, on the other hand, was not able to attend the party as she and her new cop boyfriend attempted to stop some punk kid from vandalizing a statue and failed miserable in the process.   Probably the best bit of the show is when they had Andy try to interrogate the kid and he pretended to be an FBI agent.

The Office on the other hand only spent the first bit before the opening credits on their Halloween party which was pretty good as I liked everyone’s costumes with Michael as a dick in the box guy, Dwight as the Jigsaw puppet, and even Kelly bringing back the chick from The Fifth Element. I wish they had spent more of the episode on Halloween stuff because then it pretty much devolved into just a regular episode of The Office with Michael falling into a coy pond and everyone making fun of him for it.   Also Andy and Pam have to go on a sales call and get mistaken for a couple since Pam is pregnant and some awkward shenanigans arise from there.   All in all not a bad episode and I did like how they are kind of pushing for Andy to go out with the new receptionist because I like his character and would like to see him get some.

And finally on 30 Rock, Tracy Morgan did hid usual crazy bit by fearing that he will be the next celebrity to die after two have keeled over already.   In a really good bit he even calls Betty White and tries to scare her to death and she figures out what he’s doing and says she’s going to be the one to bury him.   Also Frank and the other writers are struggling to make their Halloween party less nerdy and pathetic, I loved Lutz dressed as Boba Fett, and realize that gay guys hang out with Jenna and have amazing Halloween parties that hot girls show up to so they befriend her.   Then there’s Liz and Jack who are still trying to find a new cast mate for the show and for some reason head down to Kenneth’s old neck of the woods and find a ventriloquist act.   Now I’m not a fan of Jeff Dunham and I’m not sure if they were making fun of his act or not but what Jack does to his puppet at the end had me applauding.   Well that wraps up another good year of Halloween comedy episodes and a Happy Halloween to all you blog readers.

The Thursday Night Goods, for The Most Part

6b52ccaa9ab90484_jim-pam-dwight

Well it was yet again another well done Thursday night of comedy as pretty much every show on NBC’s line up performed fairly decently.   Sadly I can’t go so far as to say they are all performing decently in the ratings and it leaves me a bit ticked off.   The only one of the shows doing well is The Office.   I don’t know what it is but people still love them some Office.   I can’t say the same for its counter part show Parks and Recreation, which I always find to be the highlight of the night, as this season has only been able to draw in about half of the Office’s audience and is facing a possible cancellation.   Even 30 Rock, which has won the best comedy Emmy yet again, has lower ratings so far this year than from the previous one.

And even though I’m not a huge fan of Community, though it is growing on me, it too can’t hold down decent numbers but I guess is fairing decently for an NBC show.   I don’t know what it is but people seem to have an adverse reaction when they tune in to NBC.   Its always struggling along and can’t really find any shows that click with people anymore.   Sadly shows that are clicking with people are overly wrought procedurals and some of the dumbest reality shows known to man.   I will give it to NBC that they do keep up their credibility with far more engaging and plot driven shows.   But enough about all that unpleasantness, lets discuss the shows.

As far as Community goes, as stated above, it’s growing on me only from a sense that they have fine tuned their comedy from the dregs that was the first episode.   The gags are getting a lot cleverer and the characters are getting deeper personalities and not just your usual plot filler.   This episode was pretty good as we saw Jeff trying to convince Troy to join the lackluster community college football team, I do believe one of the players is full on pregnant, because he didn’t want the dean to send out flyers for the college with his face all over them.   Through this we got some good back story on Anna which has been lacking in the past and the Arab buy was mostly absent from this episode which I liked because I don’t find him a particularly appealing character.   There were also some decent moments with Chevy Chase and the dean trying to come up with a mascot in a very warped way and also Brita not quite understanding the whole women going to the bathroom together thing.   All in all not a bad time spent.

As for Parks and Recreation and The Office, Parks episode wasn’t as funny as last weeks, but how could it be with Fred Armisen’s guest appearance one of the funniest I’ve seen this year, but The Office’s was definitely much better than the rather week one that was given to us last week.   In Parks we had Leslie trying to fill the pit after an inspirational building crew called Kaboom! built a play ground in a day.   Sadly as it’s getting filled they dump dirt all over Andy who is still living in it and he plans to sue the city.   Luckily things get all worked out and we get closer to getting that park done from last season.   On The Office, its revealed that Michael is dating Pam’s mom and it pretty much destroys Pam, which is to be expected.   There are some great moments in this episode as when Dwight tries to bug Jim’s office with a wooden mallard and I thought Ryan’s whole shtick with a fedora was pretty inspired.

30 Rock’s episodes so far this year, I will admit, haven’t been performing as well as I thought they would.   They are pretty funny but they aren’t as bust a gut funny as so many of the last seasons have been, though I did really enjoy Jenna going to Iceland to film a werewolf movie only for it to be sabotaged with a sun that won’t set.   Also Liz finally gets her book out on the shelves which causes men all over the office to attack her verbally, physically, and with a torrent of garbage.   Even Tracy ends up having to move in with Liz and as can be expected is about the worst house guest you could ever have.   Not a bad episode but not even the guest appearance of Will Arnett as the gay Devon was as good as his previous appearances.   But I know the show will start to pick up because it really is one of the funniest shows on TV right now and they always pull through with some pretty hilarious bits.

Four Course Meal of Comedy!

ac67821d07db380b_30-rock

Thursday night is officially back to Comedy Night Done Right with all four NBC comedies finally back on one night.   No more half hour Weekend Update episodes and most likely no more hour long comedy episodes, at least until sweeps anyway.   And if experience has taught us anything those hour long episodes can either be pure genius or make you feel that part of your life force has been sucked away.   I’ve been waiting since the beginning of the season for them to get back to this old, but perfect formula, and have four good half hour programs of hilarity.    We are now back to a good ol four course meal of comedy.

First off is Community which is like a nice appetizer as its light and not what you’re always looking forward to but usually comes off nice and easy.   I’ve found myself liking this show as the season progresses and I’m glad for that because it could’ve been a train wreck from beginning to end like I thought it would be.   Though I still think they need to tone down the insanity of Ken Jeong’s Asian Spanish teacher, he wasn’t overly annoying in this episode as he went way overboard after finding someone had cheated on his Spanish test.   Jeff then used his questionable powers of attorney to defend said person in some funny scenes involving a disciplinary board and a swimming pool.   I also liked how Chevy Chase’s character got himself roped into coming up with a song for the college and just kept ripping off other song’s tunes.   But, again, the least interesting part was the Arab kid as he used yet another tired plot device to try to trick Troy into thinking he was an alien in scene after scene that remained unfunny.

Then Parks and Recreation comes at you like the pre-main course salad because everyone loves a salad and it’s great to have around right before you get that big old steak.   This episode I thought was really the highlight of the night and was really the funniest episode of the season so far.   It was great to see Fred Armisen play the Venezuelan Parks and Recreation person from Pawnee’s sister city.   All he had to do through the episode was to completely insult Pawnee and America and everybody in the town and he did it perfectly.   I also loved how one of the Venezuelans went head over heals for the intern girl’s character and she acts so apathetically to it all.   Also when they think Tom is a servant and he hates it at first but then realizes these guys are loaded and tip him for every little thing that he does.   This show has really been on its game lately and continues to deliver perfect episode after perfect episode.

Then we have the big main course of the evening being the episode of The Office.   Sadly I wish I had done this whole meal analogy when they had a better episode on because you might want to complain to the waiter how bland it was.   It was just one of those episodes where it really feels like they just put it in there to take up time.   All that was the plot focus was Michael thinking he was getting a shake down from the mob and Dwight and Andy pushing this belief so Michael can do stupid thing after yet again stupid thing.   It did have its good moments though and I wouldn’t say it was the worst episode I’ve ever seen but it all felt so pointless in the end.   Though by the end Michael was showing more confidence in his wheelings and dealings and there was a great bit with different people from the office in some way screwing up Jim and Pam’s honeymoon for them.

And then for that sweet desert that you know you really want there was the premiere of 30 Rock to get all excited about.   Yes the show I know I’ve been waiting the most to come back on the air is finally back and it didn’t disappoint in the least. Mostly the episode followed Liz and Pete being forced by Jack to find a new cast mate and then everybody thinking that the two of them are having an affair together because they don’t want anybody to know they are looking for a new cast member.   This leads to a great part with Pete’s wife showing up just as they are lying to the writers and saying they are sleeping together and she kind of invites Liz to join them.   Also Kenneth and all the NBC pages go on strike leaving Jack to figure some way bribe Kenneth into calling it quits and we have yet another cameo by Steve Buscemi as the getting weirder private eye we first saw in the second season.   All, of course, leads to hilarious moment after hilarious moment in the show that has yet again won the Emmy for best comedy, and it’s easy to see why that is.

HEROES Episode Review: Acceptance and Hysterical Blindness

NUP_136321_0187

Well you can definitely say things are heating up on Heroes, even with the slow simmer that was this week, and the week priors, episode.   Even though every episode ends with their usual “To Be Continued…” moniker, these past two episodes really seemed like they fit a little bit more into the two-parter mold.   Mostly because the characters from last weeks and this weeks episodes were prominent in both and it didn’t really veer off into what the overall arc of what this season is about.   And what is this season really about?   So far they have been taking their time with what could possibly be the life ending, earth shattering point of it all.   Not that I really have a problem with a nice, good build up but I’m really dying to know what’s up with that compass and what the final motives of Samuel and his circus are.

And why did these episodes fit so well into two parts?   Well from where last weeks episode left off, it made it such the perfect cliff hanger for this weeks episode.   But let me start off by jumping back to last week and throwing in some explanation.   Mostly the episode centered around Nathan as he continues to figure out he might not all be right in the head and slowly Sylar is creeping out.   He also starts to get visions of an accidental death that he was involved with that may have been erased from his memory.   But once he goes digging for answers and talking to all the wrong people, Swoosie Kurtz among them, his fate at the end of the episode doesn’t bode well for return.   We also see Hiro as he continues the only slightly interesting “Dial a Hero” story line he’s been given as well as facing the fact that his power is now slowly killing him.  And speaking of powers not going to right, we also get Tracy trying to work some angle with H.R.G. and her powers start to back fire on her.

Then we have this weeks episode which was pretty good and that was mostly do to the fact that Madeline Zima’s character professed her interest in Claire and they had that girl on girl kiss that we got a glimpse of from last week.   Of course Claire also suspects her of being a nut job stalker trying to take people out to be close to her but later its revealed other hands are involved with those more dastardly deeds.   There’s also the continuation of Peter and the new girl on the block with powers as they have a slow build up to hooking up, come on its soooo going to happen.   Now Sylar is also back in the game and they work the amnesia angle for a little bit but hopefully that will be cast aside rather quickly because if there’s anything that’s more overused then amnesia in TV I’d like to hear about it.   Well sadly I looked at the numbers and not even a pretty hot girl on girl kiss was enough to bring in too many big numbers for the show this week, a pretty sad 5.6 million, so I don’t know how long Heroes may be fated to last.   It’s sad because it’s up against stiff yet ridiculously dumb competition.   I can’t profess how much I hate Dancing with the Stars and all the IQ lowering stupidity that show offers, and yet there’s really no other place to move Heroes.   Yet again, crappy reality programming reigns supreme over shows that can actually offer a stimulating story line.

Jim and Pam Get married, Office Style

6a00d834518cc969e20120a5ffc213970c-500pi

Well the moment many have been waiting for, for about five years now, has finally come.   The Jim and Pam wedding celebration came in the form of an hour long episode of The Office.   The strange thing was it all felt very low key to me.   They didn’t go as outrageous as I almost felt they should’ve with such a monumental event.   Of course you had Michael screwing things up left in right with his speeches and his usual failure to impress the opposite sex.   I’m not exactly sure why any woman would sleep with Dwight, the man looks like the spitting image of a child predator, but I guess it’s a true testament to how low a woman’s standards will go when they see another woman getting married off.

Probably my favorite bit was when Andy tried to impress the new secretary with his dance moves and tore a very unfortunate part of himself requiring Pam to take him to the hospital the night before her wedding.  I will say though that they don’t really use any of Pam and Jim’s parents to any real funny use and maybe that’s what they were going for since they didn’t get any real big stars for the parts.   Pam’s dad ended up bringing a far much younger than him date and they really only briefly touched on that when they could’ve milked that for some decent awkward comedy.   I did like the brief exchange Michael had with Pam’s mom right before the ceremony about old women carrying food in their purse.   All in all a good wedding episode that didn’t do anything too over the top and now we just have to wait for Pam to pluck out that baby which I’m sure will be done in the shows usual painfully awkward fashion.

Now for the big surprise of the night, I actually found myself enjoying the night’s episode of Community.   Mostly because it did what I’ve been saying they needed to do all along and that’s incorporate every character into the episode and give them all pretty much the same screen time.   My whole problem with the show so far has been they’ve left it up to McHale to take the whole brunt of the episodes but with everybody doing their equal share, the show flows a lot better.   Though I will say there are those few characters I find annoying and useless still.   Such as Troy who was still not overly used well here and the Arab kid who I still find the slightest bit annoying.   Also they need to axe off Ken Jeong’s Asian Spanish teacher character because all he does is expect to get laughs from yelling.   I did find myself though like McHale’s interactions with Shirley as they found the only thing they really have in common is talking dirt about everyone else.   Also I think the episode was saved by the return of John Oliver from The Daily Show who I really liked from the first episode who returns here with a pretty decent bit about scientific research and testing.

And let’s not forget about Parks and Recreation people.   I’ve seen the numbers for this show and they are down significantly.   I have actually grown a pretty big fondness for this show, which is probably not good because when I do that the show usually ends up getting axed, I miss you Reaper!   But even this episode was great as the people of the Parks Department all tried to find dirt on each other and we learn some dark secrets about Ron the boss and the lothario Tom whose marriage is not all what it seems.   Also we get probably the best date preparation I’ve ever seen as Leslie is so nervous about her date that she goes on a practice run with Anne and it becomes such a befuddled mess.   So lets keep all the good comedy coming and I hope everybody is psyched for the return of 30 Rock next week!

Comedy Night Done Right-ish

parksandrecreation

Let me start off by saying shame on NBC Saint Louis for showing special news coverage on the Taste of Saint Louis and some weird mom, baby thing for the first hour of NBC’s Comedy Night Done Right.   Now I don’t mind so much that I missed the Half Hour Weekend Update at seven, but forcing me to miss Parks and Recreation and being forced to have to wait to watch it the next day on the Internet all for some stupid mom, baby special is abominable.   They’re just lucky they pulled it this past week instead of when 30 Rock was going to premiere because they might have received a pretty strongly worded email.   Anyway I hate to say but watching the Parks and Recreation on the Internet the next day was the only real highlight of the night.

I have to say Parks and Recreation has been stepping up their game this season and keeping their episodes intriguing, fairly tight, and of course, awkwardly hilarious.   The whole set up this week had Leslie and Tom as judges for the Miss Pawnee Beauty Pageant.   Of course the hottest girl in the show, who happened to have zero talent in the talent competition and zero class all together, came to be the front runner, with Leslie pulling for the more matronly looking of the girls.   All of it ended in a slight nod to 12 Angry Men with Leslie desperately trying to convince the judges to very little avail.   I especially loved the former beauty pageant winning judge who was pulling for the hottie and admitted her talent had been packing a suitcase.   We also get to see Louis C.K. popping back in as the dim bulb police officer now trying to win Leslie’s affections.   This is all done pretty cute and will be pretty fun to watch throughout the rest of the season.

Now on the more dull side of the comedy spectrum, I wasn’t overly blown away by the nights episode of The Office.   Frankly it was hard for them to make a whole episode about who should get raises or not funny and they did try their best.   But when that is what the whole episode is devoted to it gets to be a bit much when that’s all they are willing to do for the whole half hour.   Though this is so far about the only episode I really haven’t liked for the season they are still doing pretty good for themselves and I know not everyone is going to be a winner.

Now for Community.   Oh Community, how you strive to be better and better and yet you only inch your way there episode by episode.   I will admit, this weeks episode was stepping it up and was working a little bit better for me.   We got a little bit more going with the Arab kid and find out some more stuff about his background.   But it sadly only consists of the old plot device of the parent that doesn’t believe in the kids actual dream and wants them to work in the family business.   Though I will give it to him that the documentary he filmed was creepily clever and funny.   The only problem is they still don’t know to do with the myriad of side characters they have and the jittery girl and the in her thirties black woman still had nothing to do.   I’m expecting they’ll get more attention in later episodes but right now they are highly unutilized in dull side plots.   I think one had to do with how a person sneezed like a girl or something, I don’t know.   Just get 30 Rock back and get this definitely back to Comedy Night Done Right.

HEROES Episode Review: ‘Ink’

heroes24-155b

I hope some of the naysayers out there are watching this new season of Heroes because all I can say is that, so far, it’s delivering on pretty much every level.   It really seems like they have learned from their mistakes from seasons past and actually discovered how to kick off an engrossing season.   There are definitely some good things they did right off the bat this time that saved their asses from falling into yet another disappointing season.   For one it seems like they might have completely written out Dr. Suresh.   He was never a terrible character but they did just keep give him bad story line after bad story line.   That whole him turning into a monster was just a sad and pathetic rip off of The Fly.   Also they seem to be keeping these episodes so far pretty tight and not letting them meander over too much useless story filler.   What helps is that they don’t seem to be trying to cram every character into every episode anymore like they used to.

Take Monday night’s episode ‘Ink’ for instance.   They really only focused on three of the characters and had a few others intermingle among those three story lines.   No sign of Hiro or Ando in this one nor Tracy Strauss doing her water tricks and looking sexy as hell for all them heroes.   It really helps the show to just stay focused on each episode and keeps it from getting too bogged down in what every character is doing towards their eventual goal and plot line of the season.   I especially liked Parkman’s story line this week as he now has Sylar pretty much permanently stuck in his brain and destroying Matt’s mind mentally in the hopes of being able to get back into his body.   Matt assumes he’s just an irritating figment he can just ignore but Matt soon finds out he can do much more and make his life so much worse.

Even Peter who’s story line didn’t amount to too much more than himself running into this seasons latest villain was enough to hold my attention.   Partly because this ink man villain is actually pretty bad ass I gotta say.   It may just be the actor being able to do a kick ass performance with the part, but there’s just something about him that makes you feel the foreboding around him.   Also I liked Peter’s other run in with the entrance of yet another person with abilities at his work, a deaf woman that has the ability to see sound in light or something and can play one of hell of a cello without any lessons.   I’m not exactly sure what her powers are exactly but I am excited to see more.   We also get to see a little bit more of Claire interacting with her new friend played by Madeline Zima, who I absolutely love in almost anything, and basically we get to see them become chummier after she saw Claire fall out a window and put herself back together.   Keep on keeping on Heroes and try to make it so this season rivals the first in being just plain bad ass.

“Community” Still Struggling Along

Community-1

Well I was willing to give Community another chance and I will say I’m seeing a few glimmers of hope, but sadly I have to say there’s a huge gaping hole where a really good show should be.   First off, they’re still not doing anything with their secondary characters and the little they are doing just didn’t work at all in this episode.   The Indian guy and the still wearing a letterman’s jacket African American guy were used for one Spanish dialogue bit that was decently funny, but then they were barely seen in the episode otherwise.   And as for the highly peppy girl and the in her thirties lady their use was kind of more annoying than anything as they, for some reason,  get super excited about protesting something or other and putting tape over their mouths.   At least that will keep them from spitting out the less than impressive dialogue that was written for them.

If you didn’t notice I didn’t write any of these characters names because they have made it so their names are almost instantly forgettable with the little they’ve been given to do.   And the reason for all of this being this episode was clearly all about Joel McHale and Chevy Chase’s characters bonding together over a Spanish class assignment.   They are both very entertaining to watch though and I will give it to the presentation they give at their class which is pretty funny and oddly set to Aimee Mann’s “It’s Not Going to Stop”.    Also the teacher played by Ken Jeong, the guy from The Hangover and about a million other movies, really seems like he’s struggling to make his bit funny.   I’m not exactly sure why it’s funny to have an Asian man rattling on about how funny and weird it is for an Asian to be teaching Spanish.   Really all they need to do to save the show is figure out exactly where this show is going.   I know it’s only two episodes in but I kind of want to know were this show is going with the whole season overall.

In brighter news I have to give it to Parks and Recreation for being one of those shows that completely turned itself around and is one I look forward to seeing every week.   This week they introduced Louis C.K. as a Pawnee police officer who may have a thing for Leslie Knope after an awkward incident involving a community garden and marijuana. I hope he will be a recurring character as Louis C.K. can be pretty funny and his little monologue at the end was pretty tongue-tied and funny.  Also the boss Ron had a great bit involving sneezing and his bad hernia which he uses to great effect throughout the episode.   Also on The Office side of life, it was a bit of a grueling episode as Michael was left out of a meeting with Jim and the head boss and he tries to sneak in every chance he can. Toby and Dwight have a great Hardy Boys moment as they try to figure out if Darryl is lying about his on the job work accident and end up insulting his sister pretty badly.   So Office and Parks, keep doing what you’re doing cause its working for you and I’m still holding out hope for Community.
