ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Script Being Written

arrested development

An ‘Arrested Development’ feature film adaptation has been in development for so long, it’s become newsworthy when any indication of progression on the project comes out.   Oh, look!   Mitchell Hurwitz typed up a scene!   OMG, James Vallely added a comma!

So, excuse any lack of enthusiasm that comes out when I read The Hollywood Reporter saying Hurwitz and Vallely, the creator and co-executive producer, respectively, have begun work on the screenplay.   While production is likely to begin in the Spring, don’t hold your breath, as most of the show’s main cast (ie Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Will Arnett, etc.) have seen their stock grow since the show’s debut in 2003.   Nonetheless, the two are working on the screenplay, and Ron Howard’s Imagine Pictures is set to produce alongside Fox Searchlight.

Hurwitz and Vallely have stated time and again that a feature film adaptation of the show would not happen unless all, main cast members were on board.   A few have held out for awhile, but it looks like everyone is back on board the film that will show the continuing adventures of the Bluth clan.

Hurwitz is set to direct the film.

Stellan Skarsgård Takes On THOR

stellan skarsgard

Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd är klar för en roll i actionfilmen “Thor”.

For those of you who can’t translate Swedish, that bit of gobbledygook basically says Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd may be returning to the scruffy, Nordic look you see him in above from 2005’s ‘Beowulf & Grendel.’   SkarsgÃ¥rd has revealed he has a role in the Kenneth Branagh-directed adaptation of Marvel Comics’ ‘Thor.’   He made the announcement to TT Spektra, and the news was picked up by website Ystads Allehanda.

Says Skarsgård about the casting:

They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy.

Skarsgård joins a cast that already includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and Samuel L. Jackson.

‘Thor’ ar satt att slappas den 20 maj 2011.   Yes, evidently “release” sounds like “slap-ass” in Swedish.

‘Paranormal Activity’ Expanding This Weekend

paranormal_activity

If you aren’t in, or within sufficient driving distance, to one of the 33 cities that hosted midnight screening of ‘Paranormal Activity’ this past weekend, you may not have to wait much longer to get the pants scared off you.   Thanks to the word of mouth that drove every showing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to sell out, Paramount Pictures has decided to give the film a wider release beginning this weekend, October 9th.   The film, which earned $16,000 per screen and $535,000 total, will be playing in 40 markets with showing happening throughout the day, not just at midnight.   Thanks can also go to everyone who registered and “demanded” the film over at Eventful.

You can check out our boy, Nick’s, review of the film right here.   As someone lucky enough to check out one of these midnight shows, I can safely say that the film is truly terrifying.   The same air of suspense and overbearing terror that filled the final ten minutes of ‘The Blair Witch Project’ can be found throughout the entirety of ‘Paranormal Activity.’   If you are a horror fan who hasn’t been scared for quite a while, do yourself a favor and check out this film as soon as you can.   I guarantee, after seeing it, you will begin hearing strange noises in your house, and you will have more than a little difficulty sleeping comfortably for the next couple of days.

You can check out the film’s official website right here.

New CLASH OF THE TITANS Stills

Louis Leterrier’s remake of ‘Clash of the Titans’ certainly looks stylish. Judging from these new pics, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly and Empire Online, you can certainly see the craftsmanship from production designer Martin Laing (‘Terminator Salvation’) and costume designer Lindy Hemming (‘The Dark Knight’).

Check out the rest of these images that includes our first looks at Liam Neeson as Zeus and the three witches:

Fox Hatching a SPORE Movie

spore

20th Century Fox is developing a movie called ‘Spore.’   It is to be followed by a sequel titled ‘Mold’ with a third film to follow called ‘Fungus.’   And, if you catch that joke, you’re instantly in my cool book.

But, seriously, according to Heat Vision Blog, Fox has acquired the rights to the popular video game, ‘Spore,’ developed by Mr. Sim himself, Will Wright.   The new film is to be developed as a CG-animated feature that will be directed by Chris Wedge, Fox Animation’s go-to guy who gave us the ‘Ice Age’ series and ‘Robots.’   The screenwriters behind Disney’s upcoming ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, are set to pen the screenplay.

The original game gave the player the power of evolution, letting them create a creature from the cellular level all the way up to global colonization.   Not sure how they’re going to get a narrative out of that, but it sounds like it has potential to be fun.   Personally, I’d love to see a ‘Planet Earth’-type film with completely made up creatures, but I’m not writing it.   Erb and Oreland are, so, Yay them!

Electronic Arts and Blue Sky Studios are co-producing.

TOOTH FAIRY Trailer is Painful

Nothing like a hurts donut just before the weekend starts.   To that end, excuse me if I’m being a little lazy, but I’m going to reiterate the same discussion I ran with the poster for this Rock-starring, kiddy-friendly snoozefest.   This comes just as the trailer for ‘The Tooth Fairy’ is hitting the Inter-waves via Yahoo! Movies.

Is it the skates?  Is it the wings?  Is it the horrid tagline?  What about this new poster trailer for ‘The Tooth Fairy’ is it that just makes us cringe so much?  If you picked any of those three, you’d be wrong?  It’s the fact that we remember a day about six years ago when ‘The Rundown’ came out, and a scene early in the film had a passing of the baton of sorts between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  Knowing the ‘Jingle All the Way’ and ‘Junior’ path Schwarzenegger took later in his career, we were worried then, and it seems our worries have come to fruition.

See that cute, little PG tag in the bottom left-hand corner of the poster at the start of the clip?  That means the baton has truly been passed.  Johnson could have been a second coming for a lot of action fans, but he has jump-started the rear trajectory on a career that could have made him an icon.  It’s been happening for a long time, and some of always had hope that Johnson would snap back, take back the action reigns, and rule alongside guys like Jet Li and Jason Statham.  Alas, that is not to be, and we are sure to see more rather than less of those goofy scowls and muscled up & folded arms.

Now feast your optics on this bit of cardboard:

I…it…when he jumps off…with the wings…

Words fail me.

‘The Tooth Fairy’ comes out on January 22nd.

Review: WHIP IT

whip it

There are two kinds of first-time directors.  There are the directors who have a vision, a story that is wrapped up in the tangles of their mind waiting to be presented via the medium of motion pictures.  Then there are the directors who do it just because it seems the thing to do.  They either admire the glamour and glory that comes from the profession and they want a taste, or they are already in the business and feel it is time for them to transition into the big chair.  Judging by the new film, ‘Whip It,’ Drew Barrymore is in that latter of the latter choice, a first-time director who has worn a number of other hats in the industry and felt it was time to make her move.  However, despite the force of an inventive story and commendable performances, that move she makes doesn’t seem to get her very far along the track.

Ellen Page plays Bliss Cavendar, a small-town, Texas girl whose mother, played by Marcia Gay Harden, wants nothing more for her daughter than to see her become a success.  Bliss has other interests, namely indie rock and grunge boots.  So, you can imagine how quickly Bliss jumps at the chance when she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.  Bliss joins the team, convincing her mother her late nights are spent at an SAT class.  It isn’t long before Bliss is a rookie of the year of sorts, and she must choose between living her own life and giving in to the desires of her mother.

Nothing in the film moves smoothly, and, unfortunately, some of the blame does rest with the screenplay by Shauna Cross who is adapting her own novel here.  That aspect of the film is purely adequate, and Cross never succeeds in pulling off as much inventiveness in the story arcs as she does the overall narrative.  The film is really two stories in one, one about a girl learning to live her own life and the other a typical sports movie where the ending can follow one of two paths.  While the idea of roller derby has never been done in this way before, there is just something about Cross’ screenplay that cries stale.  You never get the sense of originality that you probably should.

‘Whip It’ is a film full of distractions.  Most of them come from Barrymore and her direction.  There’s no style.  It all seems put together in a flurry of stand-alone shots.  Let’s just say, she’s anything but erudite when it comes to the craft.  There is noticeably very little in the way of vision with Barrymore’s direction, and it seems you could stump the actress-turned-director by asking her for many of the film’s shots reasons for being.  The film holds on awkward expressions, actors looking blankly just off camera, and goofy antics that just seemed to happen between the times she said “Action” and “Cut.”  Any level of fluidity goes right out the window the moment we sense there’s no point in what we are seeing, and, unfortunately, this happens far too often with this film.

Not even the “actiony” roller derby scenes seem to have much flow.  Made up of choppy bits that make it progressively more difficult to tell who is who, it ends up coming off like Michael Bay directing battling robots.  It doesn’t matter that the teams are wearing completely different colors.  It is still difficult to tell what is going on.  Much like the remainder of the film, the roller derby scenes in ‘Whip It’ give gawk a whole new meaning.  Barrymore’s direction is an oaf, lumbering around the screenplay, which, in comparison, seems downright rigorous.

To that end, it does seem that most of the people involved in the film were having a fun time of it.  Most of the cast members breeze through their respective roles without much effort, particularly Ellen Page who can play this kind of rebellious teen in her sleep.  Gay Harden and Daniel Stern do justice to their roles as Bliss’ parents, though Gay Harden’s role is wholly thankless and it’s a foregone conclusion that Stern can play clueless without issue.  Alia Shawkat plays Pash, Bliss’ best friend, who has a bit more wit than your typical, sidekick role.  As the team, Barrymore plays stoner Smashley Simpson, Eve plays the muscle Rosa Sparks, and Zoe Bell plays Bloody Holly each with their own level of sufficiency.  No one really stands out, not even Kristen Wiig as Maggie Mayhem, who has probably the deepest character arc found in the film.  Andrew Wilson nearly steels the show as Razor, the coach, Juliette Lewis plays bitchy well as the leader of a rival team, and singer/songwriter Landon Pigg plays Bliss’ new love interest, a character, who, unfortunately, is destined to go only one of one direction.  The less said about Jimmy Fallon’s annoying performance as the MC of the roller derby, the better.

Never allowing itself much style or sense of vision, ‘Whip It’ is a film whose movement seemed stifled at the concept stage.  Cross had a vision with her novel, and, unfortunately, lackluster screenwriting and a complete lack of experienced filmmaking came together to create something that, sadly, falls noticeably short of its goals.  It’s a shame really.  You see what the film was trying to do, you recognize its end-point, but, like a spectator cheering on a losing team, you know all the effort and good nature in the world can’t make up for poor craftsmanship.  You want to root a movie like ‘Whip It’ on, but desire for something to be good only gets you so far.  Unfortunately, what is at work here just doesn’t get it any further.

THE CRAZIES Trailer Hits

crazies olyphant

The trailer for Overture’s remake of George Romero’s ‘The Crazies’ has been released.  You can check it out in all its HD glory over at Apple, or you can check out the embedded version right here.

Let’s get to that, shall we:

All in all, this looks to be a pretty nice, small-town, horror movie.  Romero’s original is a forgotten classic, probably the best work the director did outside of the “…of the Dead” series.  You have to wonder how smart the reactive use of Gary Jules’ take on “Mad World” is.  Seriously, Donnie Darko was eight years ago.  Surely, we can find a different, creepy and melodic song to use over images of horror.

But that really has nothing to do with the film itself.  Speaking of which, the film’s official website has gone live, as well.

‘The Crazies’ is set for release on February 26th, 2010.  Gary Jules’ “Mad World” will stop being used around 2352.

Michael Bay Announces TRANSFORMERS 3 Release Date

michael bay

Indiscernible robots punching and kicking each other round 3 will be hitting our movie theaters sooner than we may think.  Michael Bay announced via his official blog that not only is ‘Transformers 3’ coming, but a release date is set.  That date would be July 1st, 2011.

But, don’t take our word for it.  Read it straight from the man himself:

Well its official: We have a great Transformers 3 story. The release date is now July 1st 2011. Not 2012.

Today is Day One. This morning started with an ILM meeting for five hours in San Francisco. Currently I’m flying with writer Ehren Kruger to Rhode Island to talk to Hasbro about new characters.

P.S. Megan Fox, welcome back. I promise no alien robots will harm you in any way during the production of this motion picture. Please consult your Physician when working under my direction because some side effects can occur, such as mild dizziness, intense nausea, suicidal tendencies, depression, minor chest hair growth, random internal hemorrhaging and inability to sleep. As some directors may be hazardous to your health, please consult your Doctor to determine if this is right for you.

Pain and Gain is right after shooting of Trans 3.

Michael

Awwww.  Ain’t that sweet.  He’s already begun the “hitting on Megan” phase.

Seriously, as if there wasn’t reason enough for concern about this film, hearing that he and screenwriter Ehren Kruger are meeting with Hasbro to talk about characters twists my nerves, as it should any lover of movies, really.  How about a story first?  Can we deal with a solid story before we begin talking about the latest, goofy Autobots that are going to be either annoying us or beating the crap out of goofy Decepticons?

Anyway, I guess ‘Transformers 3’ is hitting on July 1st.

Empire Unveils New CLASH OF THE TITANS Images

clash of the titans

Empire Online rolled out a few new photos of Sam Worthington as Perseus within which he is carrying a strange sack.  Judging by the shape of the sack and the stern look on Worthington’s face, the only logical answer is that what is inside the sack is a head with a hair full of snakes that can turn any creature, big or small, into stone.

The latest Empire magazine also features Worthington’s Persus on its cover.
