Bryan Singer Could Return for X-MEN 4

bryan singer xmen

It doesn’t take a skilled critic of the  art form  of motion pictures to see the  drop off  that occurred between X2: X-MEN UNITED and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND.  Anyone who knows anything about the franchise realizes that drop off came at the absence of direction by one Bryan Singer.  Now, four years after leaving the franchise, the USUAL SUSPECTS and VALKYRIE filmmaker is talking return.

I’m still looking to possibly returning to the X-MEN franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it.

Singer spoke those words at the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea.  The Hollywood Reporter picked up the story courtesy of the Associated Press.  Singer said he enjoys working in the genre of science fiction and fantasy, because the outrageous stories allow him to discuss social issues and the human condition.

While there are no set-in-stone plans for a fourth X-MEN film, the spin-off side of the story is close to taking off like gangbusters.  A second WOLVERINE film has been green-lit, David Goyer is still set to direct a MAGNETO film, Ryan Reynolds is set to star in a DEADPOOL film, and THE NEW MUTANTS is also on tap for pre-production.

“Chaos Reigns” the New “I Drink Your Milkshake”

antichrist fox

Look at that cute, little fella.  Poor guy only had one line in all of Lars Von Trier’s latest film, ANTICHRIST.  But don’t pity the little guy, because that one line is becoming an institution all on its own.  The brewing of the line of dialogue, “Chaos reigns” was noticed a few weeks back during Fantastic Fest, and Variety is now reporting that it has grown into a full-blown, t-shirt stands nightmare.

Says Ryan Werner, marketing head for IFC, who picked up the film for domestic distribution:

We’ve been saying it in the office since we bought the movie, so it’s funny that it took off in Fantastic Fest.  We knew things would happen, just because I’ve worked on other controversial movies before like THE BROWN BUNNY, and they kind of take a life of their own once you start throwing stuff out there.

You can look fashionable in your very own “Chaos Reigns” t-shirt courtesy of Mondo Tees.  Also in red, which, if you’ve seen the movie, seems more apropos.

Marshall and Raimi Up for a 3-D BURST

neil marshall

Neil Marshall and Sam Raimi are coming together to throw a little 3-D spontaneous combustion our way.  Lionsgate announced on Friday that they picked up distribution rights to BURST 3-D, a horror film that is to be produced by Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and directed by DESCENT and DOOMSDAY director Marshall.

Written by Gary Dauberman(BLOODMONKEY), BURST 3-D centers on a group of travelers who are stranded in a blizzard and find themselves stalked by an evil force that causes them to spontaneously combust.

Says Mike Paseornek, President of Motion Picture Production for Lionsgate:

We are thrilled to be working again with Neil Marshall, a modern master of horror, suspense and action. With Neil at the helm of BURST 3-D, horror fans are guaranteed one of the most terrifying and innovative experiences of their moviegoing lives.

Says Ghost House partner Robert Taper:

Mike Paseornek and the Lionsgate team are leaders in the horror space. This, along with the opportunity to work closely with Joe again, were motivating factors in our desire to partner with Lionsgate on BURST 3-D. We hope to continue the partnership with Lionsgate on other projects like this.

Ivan Reitman Confirmed for GHOSTBUSTERS 3, But For What?

ivan reitman

Sometimes, a bit of news comes along of which you’re not quite sure what to make.  According to Bloody Disgusting, Ivan Reitman, director of GHOST BUSTERS and GHOSTBUSTERS 2, is confirmed for GHOSTBUSTERS 3.  It’s probably just better to run some quotes here rather than try to explain his role in the film.

have straight up confirmed, 100%, without a shadow of a doubt that Ivan Reitman, director of Ghost Busters and Ghostbusters II, is in fact attached to get behind the camera for GHOSTBUSTERS 3. While he’s attached, the word is that he hasn’t decided whether or not he really wants to direct, yet.

Does this mean Reitman may be stepping into the role of director of photography on the film with someone else serving as director?  If so, it would be Reitman’s first time acting as cinematographer since the 1969, X-rated THE COLUMBUS OF SEX.

Bloody Disgusting also conjured up a synopsis on the new GHOSTBUSTERS film.  Evidently, it will take place years after the Ghost Busters headquarters has been shut down.  The film would deal with a new threat that forces the paranormal investigators to reopen their doors.

As confirmed throughout the years of the film’s gestation, all principal players will be returning.

TOY STORY 3 Character Poster for Jessie

Expect a whole boat-load of these to hit the net in the next couple of weeks.  Yesterday, we brought you the new character poster for Rex, today, courtesy of our friends over at Coming Soon.net, we have this character poster for Jessie.  While Joan Cusack isn’t exactly a favorite of mine, in fact, she can sometimes be downright annoying, the Jessie character arc was one of the more poignant moments of TOY STORY 2.  Here’s hoping she can bring on the water works just as much for the third film.

TOY STORY 3 is set for release in 3D on June 18th, 2010.

Anvil Set to Explode in GREEN HORNET

anvil

The Canadian metal band, Anvil, has been waiting decades to explode, and, thanks to Michel Gondry and THE GREEN HORNET, they’ll get their chance to do just that.  An article in the LA Times about the documentary about the band, ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL, also makes mention the band has filmed a cameo for the Seth Rogen-starring superhero movie.  There is no mention who the band will be playing specifically, whether it be themselves or a made-up band for the film.  What the article does say, however, is that the band will (literally) explode during their cameo at a rock club.  Nothing like dying doing what you love, right?

While this news of Anvil’s cameo in THE GREEN HORNET was brought up as an aside in the article, the main focus is the fact that ANVIL! has become the first screener sent out to Academy Awards voters.  The film is available on DVD, and is deserving of any Oscar recommendations it can get.  It truly is a real life version of THIS IS SPINAL TAP.  You can check out Tom’s review of it right here, and you can order the DVD right here.

THE GREEN HORNET is set for release on December 22nd, 2010.

Joss Whedon’s CABIN IN THE WOODS Pushed Back a Year

cabin in the woods

If you were waiting with baited breath for Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s CABIN IN THE WOODS, you’re just going to have to wait a little bit longer. It appears the almighty dollar has won out. Shock Till You Drop is reporting that the horror film, initially set to scare its way into theaters on February 5th, 2010, has been pushed back nearly a full year to January 14th, 2011. The reason? According to MGM reps, early buzz on the film has been phenomenal, and the studio wants the time to convert the film over to 3-D.

Now, it is no surprise how I feel about films that are transferred over to 3-D after the fact. It’s one thing to have a film like AVATAR that was born and bred to play via the latest, state-of-the-art format of 3-D. It’s another thing entirely to take an already established film and filter it through the 3-D gimmickry that is seeming to inundate the filmmaking universe. This news comes just a little over a week after the news broke that the Weinsteins were halting production on HALLOWEEN 3 to give director Patrick Lussier ample time to work the 3-D into that film.

Of course, some are already speculating that MGM, who is having noted financial difficulties as of late, could just want to push CABIN IN THE WOODS back to their 2011 fiscal year.  Either way you slice it, the film is coming out a year after its anticipated release date. And, whether we like it or not, it will, evidently, be presented in 3-D.

Twisted Pictures Take on TEXAS CHAINSAW Franchise

texas chainsaw

Sometimes a production company just can’t get enough saws under its belt.   Take Twisted Pictures, for instance.   Not only do they have a new entry into the SAW franchise every next to last weekend in October, now, according to Variety, they are scooping up the saws deep in the heart of the South.   The production company is close to closing a deal to partner with Lionsgate to take on the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE franchise.

The idea is to bring the franchise up to date with…wait for it…you guessed it…3D technology.   The plan right now is to have THE GRUDGE screenwriter Stephen Susco to work on the script with Carl Mazzocone, Mark Burg, and Oren Koules serving as producers.   The deals set in place with Michael Bay’s company Platinum Dunes were for a per-pic basis with rights-holders Bob Kuhn and Kim Henkel.   Henkel co-wrote the original, 1974 TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE with Tobe Hooper.   Twisted is setting a multiple-pictures deal for the rights.

No dates production or release dates have been announced yet.

TOY STORY 3 Character Poster for Rex

toy story 3 rex poster

Just last week, a few of us were discussing how great Wallace Shawn is as an actor.   Even when he’s providing a voice for characters like TOY STORY’s Rex, he brings his A-game.   So, it is awesome to notice how much the marketing behind TOY STORY 3 is behind Rex the Green Dinosaur.

Today, we bring you the first of, probably, many character posters for TOY STORY 3.   This comes to us today courtesy of the Trailer Park on Myspace, and it features none other than Rex front and center.   They also announced on the site that the full trailer for the new film will be unveiled on Monday, October 12th, at 9AM PT/12PM ET, so be sure to check back on Monday.

TOY STORY 3 hits theaters on June 18th.
