“Fanboys” on it’s way !

The geeks have been heard!

Faced with a grassroots boycott of its films, bicoastal protests at screenings of its Friday opener “Superhero Movie” and a campaign calling its co-chairman “Darth Weinstein,” indie studio Weinstein Co. said Monday that it now plans to release two versions of its “Star Wars”-inspired comedy “Fanboys.”

Weinstein said it will release the two versions on DVD, and a studio source later said that is exploring two theatrical versions.

“Fanboys,” about four diehard “Star Wars” fans who break into George Lucas‘ Skywalker Ranch in order to see “The Phantom Menace” on the eve of its release, wrapped production two years ago and has been stuck in limbo as a tug-of-war between Harvey Weinstein and the filmmakers waged over competing versions of the movie.

The latest announcement did nothing to satisfy the filmmakers, who accuse the company of only putting out the announcement in order to sidestep a meltdown at this weekend’s box office.

“This is more about avoiding picket lines at ‘Superhero’ than it was about making a decision about the release of our movie,” said Kevin Mann, one of the producers.

Mann — along with producer Matthew Perniciaro, director Kyle Newman and writer Ernie Cline, who originated the story — worked on “Fanboys” in 2003 with Kevin Spacey‘s Trigger Street production company coming on board in 2005. The cast, including then up-and-comers Jay Baruchel, Kristen Bell, Seth Rogen and Dan Fogler, all signed up for a script that one year made the Blacklist, the annual industry ranking of the top scripts in town. Footage began making the rounds at “Star Wars” festivals, while 40 minutes of “Fanboys”‘ rough cut was screened at Star Wars Celebration and Comic-Con, where it was enthusiastically received by a standing-room-only crowd last year.

The Weinstein Co. picked up the project in late 2005, and following production slated “Fanboys” for release August 17, 2007. That got pushed back to a January 18 release. Then it went off the grid altogether.

Insiders said the root of the problem was Weinstein’s issue with the underlying story in “Fanboys.” The cross-country adventure is put in motion because one of the characters is facing cancer. Late last year, the company decided it would do reshoots, hiring Judd Apatow‘s producing partner Shauna Robertson to oversee a $2 million reshoot of four scenes done by director Steve Brill (“Drillbit Taylor”). That, combined with re-editing, created a version that excised the cancer subplot.

“Harvey feels it’s hard to market, especially with this cast,” an insider said. “He wants to market to a more teen audience. The filmmakers wanted a dramedy along the vein of ‘Stand by Me.”‘

The Weinstein Co. this year began testing both versions. Unprompted by the filmmakers, “Star Wars” fans began uniting to oppose the noncancer version, led by the 501st, a “Star Wars” fan group named after a fictional battalion. The group created the Web site http://committed.to/stopdarthweinstein that provided updates on developments while also lampooning Harvey Weinstein by Photoshopping him in Darth Vader drag.

The test screenings yielded a minuscule win for the noncancer version — one insider said the difference was only two test points — but that only emboldened the geeks. And some of the producers remained unmoved.

“The original reason we wanted to get involved with this script was because it was a comedy with heart,” Mann said. “In my opinion, when the cancer was taken out, the heart went with it.”

The fans’ ire was raised even more when they discovered that Brill had joined a chat session under the screen name “GL,” which fans interpreted to be George Lucas. The online discussion turned nasty with threats from both sides.

The new announcement still leaves the movie up in the air. It still has no release date, only a promise that both versions will be available on DVD. Late Monday, a Weinstein source said, “We’re making a very strong attempt to make both films available theatrically as well.”

The 501st was unimpressed with the Weinstein Co.’s move.

“This is clearly a vain attempt by the Weinstein Co. to avert ‘Star Wars’ fans’ impending boycott of all of their films,” the group said. “It’s not going to work, Darth Weinstein. There was never any doubt that you would release both versions of the movie on DVD, probably months apart, so as to leech as much money from ‘Star Wars’ fans as possible. Our boycott will continue until the Weinstein Co. announces that they are returning control of ‘Fanboys’ to the ‘Star Wars’ fans who made it, releasing the original version in theaters and doing away with their anti-fan version of the film altogether.”

The company Monday acknowledged that it had received more than 300,000 e-mails, which factored in its decision.

“While the later version tested very well with audiences, the grassroots support we have received for the first version simply cannot be ignored,” a Weinstein spokesman said.

The filmmakers had a more measured response than the fans, hoping to be given a chance to work the film some more.

“If they want to excise the cancer or reshoot again, I’ll cooperate,” Trigger Street producer Dana Brunetti said. “One tested better than the other, so I see both sides to it.

“We’re too close to the movie to be objective, but we know which we consider better,” he added with a laugh. “I’ve always been content with the (original cut of) the movie.”

Harvey Weinstein has a history of tangling with filmmakers over their films’ edits, earning him the moniker “Harvey Scissorhands” in some circles, but he seems to have met his match with a legion of “Star Wars” fans.

The possibility of a theatrical release was encouraging to both Newman and Brunetti.

“It will be interesting to see what version comes out theatrically, if it does at all,” Brunetti said. “We’re hoping to meet somewhere in the middle between the two.”

“Friday the 13th” is IMMORTAL !!

**Not Official Poster**Horror fans of the world unite! CLASSIC “Friday the 13th”(1980) is being re-created, and  a 2009 re-launch of the  Franchise is  COMING!

Now, I’ve literally grown up with Jason Voorhees. From Watching every film, to  dressing as him for Halloween, and  even recall playing “Friday the 13th” on the original Nintendo. So, being a die-hard fan  I wanted to find all the info I could on the Franchise re-launch, and here’s what  I could find…

From IMDB: It has been announced by Producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form that this film will be a ‘sequel to a remake of the original film, which never existed.’ So in a sense, it will be a remake/re-imagining of the second, third, and fourth films in the franchise, all that takes place with in a period of one week’s time. In this time period, Jason will first appear, he will don the hockey mask and sack, he will run rampant around Crystal Lake, and Tommy Jarvis will appear.

At first it was announced as a prequel/remake/re-imagining, much like the Rob Zombie “Halloween” film was. As of December 2007, it is still unclear as to what this movie will follow. All that is known is that Jason will wear the pillow case (which he only wore in “Friday the 13th Part 2” (1981)) as well as the hockey mask (which was introduced in “Friday the 13th Part III” (1982) and has been worn since by Jason). It has also been stated that Jason’s psychotic mother, Pamela Voorhees (originally playing the antagonist in the original “Friday the 13th” (1980) film) and his regarded nemesis Tommy Jarvis (introduced in “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” (1984) and appearing in “Friday the 13th: A New Beginning” (1985) and “Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives” (1986)) will most likely make an appearance.

Since the sac, the hockey mask, Pamela, Tommy, and Jason were all staples introduced in different films of the first four movies in the franchise, it can be assumed that this movie will be a re-imagining of the first four movies completely, or at least a re-imagining of the second, third, and fourth films.

Another bit of information that makes this film take place in a different continuity is because it was stated that it will take place around the events of Parts 2-4 but will also take place at Camp Crystal Lake. In the original series, during Parts 2-5, Camp Crystal Lake was abandoned following the murders of the original film. It was not re-opened until “Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives”, where it took under a different name.

  Casting List: Jared Padalecki (TV’s “Supernatural”, “Cry Wolf” (2005)) and Odette Yustman (“Cloverfield” (2008)) are in final negotiations to being cast but the roles they are playing are still unspecified, however these are character that have been confirmed to make an appearance;

WHITNEY Caucasian. Mid 20s. Younger sister to Clay. Pretty and strong girl. She has the smarts and the will to survive in the most desperate of circumstances.

CLAY Caucasian. Late 20s. Older brother of Whitney. He’s good-looking and has a quiet inner confidence. He’s a dedicated and smart guy. All the girls definitely find him attractive.

CHUMBLER Caucasian, early to mid-20s. A little chubby, but he wears his size well, along with his cool chin beard. He has a tendency to make wear his attraction to attractive girls on his sleeve. He has no shame. Please submit your funniest character actors.

TRENT Caucasian, early to mid-20s. The Alpha-Male. He’s got money, and he wants you to be his friend… especially if you can do something for him.

JENNA Caucasian, early to mid-20s. Trent’s date for the weekend. She’s great-looking, athletic, and the adventurous type. We wonder why she would be with Trent.

LAWRENCE Black, early to mid-20s. Good-looking and funny as hell. He’s smart and is already trying to get his own company started. He puts on a white sounding “good ol’ boy” voice when talking to his business associates.

NOLAN He wears a T-shirt that says *beep* CHRISTMAS – The asterisks are snowflakes. But when an older woman walks by, he crosses his arms, covering it. Nolan poses as a rebel, but he’s just as square as the rest of us.

CHELSEA Attractive college girl. Friends with BREE, but not as sexy. PARTIAL NUDITY REQUIRED

BREE Attractive friend to Chelsea, definitely the sexier of the two, and she dresses to make sure you can tell the difference. Hot as Hell!

WADE Caucasian, mid-20s. He’s technologically inclined… at least enough to use a GPS Receiver. He knows the story about Camp Crystal Lake and he tells it to his crew around a campfire.

MIKE Caucasian, mid-20s. Whitney’s boyfriend. He’s a genuine and logical guy. He makes sure that his friends, and especially Whitney, are safe and taken care of. He’s a really nice guy.

AMANDA Caucasian, mid-20s, voluptuous. Perfectly tanned and sexy. She’s into Richie…at least for the weekend. PARTIAL NUDITY REQUIRED

RICHIE Caucasian, mid-20s. Funny and definitely attracted to Amanda. He doesn’t waste time making a move on her.

It is believed that Padalecki will be playing Clay and Yustman will be playing Whitney.

Courtesy of Wikipedia:In January 2007, producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller outlined their intended goal to bring the remake to life. Fuller and Form were approached by New Line to create a remake, but because Paramount still owned certain copyrights to the first film the remake would not be able to use anything from the original film. Paramount, who wanted to be included in the remake, approached the producers and gave them license to use anything from the original films, including the title. With Paramount on board, Fuller and Form decided they wanted to use pieces from each of the first three films. Fuller stated, “I think there are moments we want to address, like how does the hockey mask happen. It’ll happen differently in our movie than in the third one. Where is Jason from, why do these killings happen, and what is Crystal Lake?” The producers expressed an interest in using the character of Tommy Jarvis, and stated that they were currently trying to figure out an origin story for Jason that would make sense.

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, writers of Freddy vs. Jason, were announced in October 2007 to have been hired to pen a script for the remake. The film was reported to focus on Jason Voorhees, and that he will keep his trademark hockey-mask. The film is being produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller through Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes, for New Line Cinema. Director Jonathan Liebesman was originally in negotiations to direct the remake in February 2006, but in November 2007, Marcus Nispel, director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake of 2003, replaced Liebesman. On January 29, 2008, Variety reported that Odette Yustman had been cast for the film, although no role was specified and that filming would begin in April 2008. On March 21, 2008, it was confirmed that Jared Padalecki was in final negotiations to star as the lead who investigates what happened at Crystal Lake.

With the Franchise doing a Worldwide Box Office total of over $350 million this was a lock for a re-imagining. No confirmation yet on who will  take on  the hood/mask as Jason himself, but fans are crying out for 6’3 1/2″ Kane Hodder who donned the mask for four consecutive films, before being snubbed for “Jason vs. Freddy”(2003). Time will tell.

Latest T4 News!

Terminator 4Â  **Not Official Poster**

After searching high, and low for the latest info on this newest “Terminator” installment, and it seems all the best news has been compiled on Wikipedia, and that reads:Â

Terminator 4 (previously known as Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, but now rumored to be Terminator: The Return of the Terminator) is the upcoming fourth installment to the Terminator film series, scheduled to be released on May 22, 2009. It is written by David Campbell Wilson, John Brancato, and Michael Ferris, directed by Joseph “McG” McGinty Nichol, and stars Christian Bale as John Connor. Anton Yelchin is in talks for the role of Kyle Reese, who befriends Marcus, an early Terminator. Sam Worthington is playing Marcus; he was personally recommended to McG by Terminator creator James Cameron. Josh Brolin has been mentioned in a possible role as the Terminator. Shooting of the film is expected to start on May 5, 2008 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Stan Winston will supervise the visual effects. Anton Yelchin has been confirmed to appear as a teenaged Kyle Reese.

The plot and storyline of the film takes place around 2019 and focuses mainly on the war between humanity and Skynet in the post-apocalyptic world. John Connor will continue to be the central character along with a new character named Marcus, who will have “equal presence.” However, other sources confirmed that Kyle Reese would be the central character and that he’ll have a huge part in not just this movie, but in future Terminator movies as well. James Middleton, the associate producer of the film, stated that “It’s really about the birth of a new hero,” and McG said that it will also be about the development of the Model 101 Terminator. Paul Haggis is currently in talks to rewrite the script.

On May 9, 2007, it was announced that rights to the Terminator series had passed hands from producers Andrew G. Vajna and Mario Kassar to The Halcyon Company and Derek Anderson. In the Variety article detailing the purchase, it states the fourth film will focus on an older John Connor in what the producers hope will be a new trilogy. Series creator James Cameron is currently not involved with the project; however, he did encourage McG on the project.

On July 19, 2007, the Terminator 4 project was in legal limbo due to a lawsuit between MGM and Halcyon subsidiary T Asset. According to the article, MGM has an exclusive window of 30 days to negotiate for distribution of the Terminator films. When negotiating for Terminator 4, Halcyon rejected their initial proposal, and MGM suspended negotiations. After the 30 days were over, MGM claimed that the period during which negotiations were suspended did not count and their exclusive period is still open. Halcyon was asking a court for an injunction allowing them to approach other distributors. However, Warner Bros. Pictures will be handling the North American distribution, while Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the film overseas.

Still no word on who will step into the shoes of Claire Danes for the role of  Katherine Brewster. Anyone have a preference ? Feel free to comment your ideas for what will undoubtedly have to be  ONE BAD CHICK!

Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day; a GO!

Troy Duffy  Writer/Director of “Boondock Saints”(1999) posted a new video on his Youtube Account where  Duffy made the announcement  on St. Patrick’s Day that  “Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day”  will FINALLY be made. Duffy has claimed that  Sony Picture Studios has greenlit a much-anticipated sequel to the fantastically crafted cult film. It is being rumored the original cast is “Excited to return”  (sans Willem Dafoe). Duffy claims that the film will begin shooting Summer 2008.

I, for one, CAN NOT WAIT !

Yes, Folks…“Dr. Seuss` Horton Hears a Who”  reigns once again with  little sign of slowing! Once again a G Rating, and timeless tale proved   to dominate at the theaters. Tyler Perry offering his newest fare in “Meet the Browns”, which was the only film that even came close to claiming the crown with a $20 million  dollar take.  20th Century Fox’s  remake film “Shutter” fronted by Joshua Jackson (of Dawson’s Creek fame) did an expected $10 million,  coming to nearly a tie with Paramount’s “Drillbit Taylor”. “10,000 B.C.” drops three slots to no. 5, bringing that to a total of $76 million to date domestically, and $150.5 million worldwide(credit).   “Never Back Down” continues to fight it out to remain on the Top 10, and again beat out “College Road Trip”,“The Bank Job”,and  “Vantage Point” which is looking to retire from the Top 10 next week, but has already hit $65 million in what is it’s 5th week of release. The mutual release between Weinstein & Fox Searchlight of “Under The Same Moon” about a Mother who comes to America to work towards  providing a better life for her family back home…leaving her son behind with his grandmother, who later passes away, forcing  the son  to fend for himself.  Ã‚  This took in only $2.7 million, however did this in 266 theaters 10% the theaters of some of the others.

The Neil Marshall Post-Apocalyptic Action-er “Doomsday”  gets Honorable mention this week if for no other reason than it’s meteoric descent  from the charts. In only it’s second week “Doomsday” now sits at no.11 with an appalling  $8.9 million.  I really had higher hopes, and expectations  for this one, and perceive it doing better on DVD.

Hitting theaters this week is: “21” Starring Kevin Spacey & Kate Bosworth, a true tale of a group of MIT students training to, and eventually taking  Vegas for millions.  Simon Pegg  steps out of his usual style of film, and into “Run, Fat Boy, Run” a David Schwimmer directed  comedy following an overweight man’s run back into the heart of his love. Paramount & MTV films is releasing “Stop-Loss” starring Ryan Phillippe as a soldier coming home from a tour of Iraq, and refuses to go back after he is re-deployed. We’ll also be seeing the newest Spoof film poking fun at the latest in Superhero movies “Superhero Movie”. All these hitting in wide release March 28th. In limited release: “American Zombie” is a mockumentary about the everyday struggle of Zombies to “Live”  in a human dominated L.A.  &  Demi Moore, and Michael Caine “Flawless” is being described as a Heist-Thriller, and should be watchable.

See you at the movies!

The Patriot Act  has been upgraded to a new agency known as US-IDENT, which keeps constant tabs on citizens – even to the extent of censoring the Internet and using fingerprints in order to access computers and bank accounts. In order to be able to respond to a new-found fuel shortage, the German company Treer designs a generator of inexhaustible energy which is propelled by ocean currents, entitled “Fluid Karma.” Unbeknown to them, the generators alter the currents and cause the Earth to spiral out of control through space, ripping holes in the fabric of space and time.

In Los Angeles, a city on the brink of chaos, we follow the criss-crossed destinies of Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action film actor stricken with amnesia; Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), ex-porn star in the midst of reconverting; and twin brothers Roland and Ronald Taverner (both played by Seann William Scott), whose destinies – on one evening – become intertwined with that of all mankind.Southland tales

WAMG First Look: Ridley Scott Upcoming Projects

Ridley Scott

Ridley Scottis in the process of finishing, working on, and starting  three different films that he’ll be personally helming as director. We won’t get into the EIGHT other projects he is producing.

Body of Lies (Releasing 10/10)

In this Spy/Drama Scott pairs Leonardo DiCaprio  & Russel Crowe who form an uneasy alliance. Leo plays Roger Ferris, a former journalist who is  recruited into the CIA to track a high-ranking member of Al Qaeda in Jordan. Crowe, is Ed Hoffman, Head of Jordan’s Covert Operations, which lead the two to  clash over  their cultural, and moral differences. Based on a book of the same name by David Ignatius.

Nottingham (2009)

Russell Crowe again teaming with Scott  for this unique spin on the  classic, and well-known  tale of Robin Hood. In this Crowe is   Sir Robert Tornham, The Sheriff of Nottingham, but not the evil villain we have come to expect from that title. This Sheriff is much more a noble gentleman than dirty scoundrel. We see a love triangle formed between Robin Hood, The Sheriff, and of course our Maid Marion. Sounds like a fun idea.

Blood Meridian (2009)

With a story from  novelist Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old) adapted for film by William Monahan (The Departed, Body of Lies) This seems to be a can’t miss. Blood Meridian  though based on historical fact is the fictional tale of (Billy?) the Kid joining up with the notorious Glanton gang  as they carve a violent, and bloody path through a late 1840’s Texas/Mexico border. Said to be a very realistic portrayal of early American expansion, and depravity.

Three films with powerhouse possibilities. I’m looking forward to seeing all of them.

WAMG First Look & (a little) Who is that guy?

Nelson McCormick is stepping out of the television box, and on to the Big Screen with not one, but two remakes of Cult Classics “Prom Night” (1980) & “The Stepfather“(1987) both of which delivered numerous sequels.

Synopsis from Shocktillyoudrop:  Ã‚

Prom Night Prom Night

(Opening 4/11)

Donna’s senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life, one of magic, beauty, and love. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of her past. But when the night turns from magic to murder there is only one man who could be responsible…the man she thought was gone forever. Now, Donna and her friends must find a way to escape the sadistic rampage of a killer, and survive their Prom Night.

The Stepfather

David Harris, very much a “family values” man, mysteriously comes into the lives of single mothers with children and becomes the dream man they always wanted. When he woos Susan Harding and eventually moves in with her family, her teenage son Michael begins to suspect that David is not quite the dream man he pretends to be. Along with his girlfriend Kelly and Susan’s friends they slowly start to piece together the mystery of the man who is set to become their stepfather, but they may be too late in getting to the truth.

If you are unfamiliar with Nelson McCormick’s body of work, he’s been directing some of America’s favorite television shows. McCormick’s credits include episodes of Prison Break, Nip/Tuck, ER, The West Wing, Cold Case, Third Watch, CSI, CSI:NY, House M.D., NYPD Blue, along with Sheena: The Series, and V.I.P. starring Pamela Anderson. Which make me wonder a little.

So, it will be interesting to see how well, given his history,  his abilities will translate when he jumps into a big screen situation.

Dr. Seuss rules at the box office!

With an entirely respectable $45 million take for the opening weekend  “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who”  blasts into the number one spot this week. The adaptation of the widely popular children’s book of the same name dethroned  the  previous week’s king “10,000 B.C.” which still held up to the competition earning $16 million bringing it’s total to $61 million in it’s second week. In a personal surprise the PG-13  action/adventure fight film  “Never Back Down” overtakes the Martin Lawrence &  Raven Symone Family Comedy “College Road Trip” for the no. 3 slot. Sony’s Pictures thriller “Vantage Point” hit no.5  , and is nearing the $60 million mark  in it’s own right. Jason Statham, and Lionsgate have not done nearly as well as estimated with a meager $13 million thus far for “The Bank Job”. Shockingly, the much-hyped Neil Marshall directed  viral outbreak flick “Doomsday”  did a POOR   $4.7 million sinking it to a no.7 debut. “Semi-Pro” starring Will Ferrell continues to plummet as “The Other Boleyn Sister”, and Paramount’s “The Spiderwick Chronicles” snag no. 9 & no. 10 respectively. “Jumper” fell off this week, but still snagged no. 11, totaling a very decent $75million overall.

This coming week could bring some contenders as Paramount gives us the new Owen Wilson comedy “Drillbit Taylor” which looks promising. 20th Century Fox hits us with “Shutter”, Joshua Jackson stars in  this American remake of a Thai horror. Tyler Perry drops “Meet the Browns” on us, and his stuff usually does well enough.  Should be interesting!

Don’t count Ferrell out!

Will Ferrell  aims to  avenge the sub-par box office  performance of “Semi-Pro” with two upcoming  projects. The first of which has Ferrell  uncredited  as Writer/Director Adam McKay (Talladega Nights, Anchorman) steps  into the front-man role as  a behind-in-rent tenant being terrorized by his landlord, aptly titled “Landlord” which is set for an April release. The second of which is the tae of two spoiled/grown men who become competitive after their single parents’ marriage. The latter has the winning combo of John C. Riley (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) and Ferrell with Adam McKay helming this and he, along with Ferrell, taking the writing credit on BOTH films. We will have a bit of a wait on “Step Brothers” as it won’t be released until Late-July.
