THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES Takes Home Top Prize At 49th Annual Annie Awards
Netflix was the big winner at the 49th Annual Annie Awards Saturday evening garnering top honors in 20 categories with the brilliant The Mitchells vs. The Machines taking home the top prize for Best Animated Feature. Produced by Oscar winners Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), the delightful film tells the story of a quirky, dysfunctional family’s road trip that’s upended when they find themselves in the middle of the robot apocalypse and suddenly become humanity’s unlikeliest last hope. The Mitchells vs. The Machine features the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Beck Bennett, Fred Armisen, Eric Andre, and Oscar winner Olivia Colman
The film’s eight Annie Awards include Best Feature (Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix), Best FX – Feature (Production Company: Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, FX Production Company: Sony Pictures Imageworks- Christopher Logan, Man-Louk Chin, Devdatta Nerurkar, Pav Grochola, Filippo Maccari), Best Character Design – Feature, Best Direction – Feature (Mike Rianda, Jeff Rowe), Best Production Design – Feature, Best Voice Acting – Feature (Abbi Jacobson (Katie Mitchell)), Best Writing – Feature, and Best Editorial – Feature.
Over on the TV side Netflix’s “Arcane” took home nine awards for Best TV/Media – General Audience, Best FX – TV/Media. Best Character Animation – TV/Media, Best Character Design – TV/Media, Best Production Design – TV/Media, Best Storyboarding – TV/Media, Best Voice Acting – TV/Media, Best Writing – TV/Media.
The Annie for Best Character Animation – Live Action went to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Production Company: Marvel Entertainment, FX Production Company: Weta Digital- Karl Rapley, Sebastian Trujillo, Richard John Moore, Merlin Bela Wassilij Maertz, Pascal Raimbault).
Marvel Studios received the Annie for Best Editorial – TV/Media for the amazing series “What If…?”(Episode: What If…Ultron Won?) “What If…?” flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. Directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer, “What If…?” launched exclusively on Disney+ on August 11, 2021.
