The GEORGE MALICH FILM FESTIVAL Every Wednesday in March – Online and at The Royale
George Malich was a prolific and well-respected actor in the St. Louis area who passed away July 26, 2012, at the age of 55. Beginning tomorrow night, March 3rd, George’s friends and coworkers are throwing a film festival to showcase the actor’s work.
Every Wednesday in March Poetry Scores and The Royale will present the 2021 George Malich Free Film Festival with free outdoor screenings at 6 p.m. every Wednesday in March in the courtyard at The Royale and free public streams on The Royale’s YouTube and Facebook pages (https://tinyurl.com/RoyaleTube and https://m.facebook.com/royalestl/). The festival will focus on the four feature movies in which St. Louis actor George Malich – who passed away July 26, 2012, at the age of 55 – appeared. On the final Wednesday, we will screen the improv mini-series about his brain tumor that George directed in the last months of his life (and selected shorts).
The screening schedule:
· 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 3: The Bunglers (Meg Halski, 2005)
· 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 10: A: Anonymous (Daniel Bowers, 2006)
· 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 17: Speak Easy (Billy Benner, 2011)
· 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 24: Go South for Animal Index (Chris King, 2013)
· 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 31: Life is Meant for Living (George Malich, 2013).
“George was acting in Poetry Scores’ movie Go South for Animal Index when he was diagnosed with the brain tumor that took him away from us, and as his condition worsened it became clear that our movie would be the last feature that George worked on. I found that very moving and set about learning what other feature-length movies George had acted in, with the idea that they should all be screened as a group,” Chris King, co-founder of Poetry Scores, said when organizing the inaugural George Malich Free Film Festival in March 2013 at Mad Art Gallery. “Since George gave his time as an actor so freely, I thought it was important that all the screenings be free.” “George was so eager to dive deep into his character as The Bunglers was his feature debut, not to mention my directing debut, which is now my full-time profession,” said Meg Halski, George’s first director in a feature film. “Needless to say, we were finding our ways together, but directing George made me realize how much I love working with actors who are ALL IN on a character. I am so happy to get to celebrate such a gem of a man.” NOTE: The in-person screenings at The Royale will be free, early (6 p.m.) and outdoors in the courtyard. A simple drinks menu will be available for sale, but no food will be served. Guests are welcome to bring their own food. *Poetry Scores is a disincorporated all-volunteer international arts collective that builds community by translating poetry into other media.
