Fathom Events Bringing RUDY Back To Theaters August 28 And September 2
He’s five-feet-nothin’, a hundred and nothin’ and barely has a speck of athletic ability, but Rudy Ruettiger still became a sports legend. As the 2018 football season begins, the film that introduced the world to “Rudy” will return to movie theaters nationwide for two days only on August 28 and September 2, in celebration of its 25th anniversary.
Accompanying these theatrical screenings of “Rudy” is an introduction featuring the real-life Rudy Ruettiger and a Q&A hosted by Michael Phillips, film critic for the Chicago Tribune, and filmed in front of a live audience at Chicago’s historic Music Box Theatre.
Tickets for “Rudy” are available now at www.FathomEvents.com and participating theater box offices.
Fathom Events and Sony Pictures Entertainment present “Rudy” in more than 600 select movie theaters on Tuesday, August 28, and Sunday, September 2, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time (both days) through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network (DBN). A complete list of theater locations will be available July 27 on the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).
“Rudy” will play in theaters just as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish play their first game of the year on September 1, facing the Michigan Wolverines and continuing a rivalry that dates back to 1887.
It’s been 43 years since Rudy Ruettiger became the first player to be carried off the field in Notre Dame history during the Notre Dame-Georgia Tech game in November 1975. The film “Rudy” was originally released in October 1993, and stars Sean Astin as Ruettiger, whose dream of making the football team at Notre Dame seems entirely out of reach. Through his relentless determination and exuberant spirit, Rudy endures every possible obstacle to follow his life’s true passion – a dream he refuses to let die.
Directed by David Anspaugh (Hoosiers) and written by Angelo Pizzo, “Rudy” has experienced both critical acclaim and enduring popularity among movie and sports fans. Roger Ebert wrote that “Rudy” is “more than simply sports sentiment. It’s a small but powerful illustration of the human spirit.” Moreover, “Rudy” has been named one of the best sports films of all time by Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, the Los Angeles Times,Esquire and Bleacher Report. It was WAMG’s number one football movie.
With an impressive cast that includes Ned Beatty, Charles S. Dutton, Robert Prosky, Jon Favreau and Lili Taylor, “Rudy” also features a rousing, enduring musical score by Academy Award® winner Jerry Goldsmith.
“This is truly one of the most popular and well-loved sports movies ever made, and it’s a spectacular way to usher in the football season,” Fathom Events VP of Studio Relations Tom Lucas said. “Seeing ‘Rudy’ on the big screen, with an audience of people equally inspired by Rudy Ruettiger and his ambition, is an experience no movie or sports fan will want to miss.”
