New Wave Chic From ’83 – LIQUID SKY Screens Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

By  |

“That’s really quite a world that you’ve shown me. German scientists are as tall as the Empire State Building, and aliens are as big as jumbo shrimp.”

LIQUID SKY (1983) plays midnights this weekend (June 15th and 16th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

Equal parts satire, self-parody, and science fiction, LIQUID SKY was considered ‘New Wave’ chic back in ’83. I saw it then when it played at The Varsity on Delmar and it should be interesting to see how it’s aged. Aliens are after the heroin-like substance produced by the human brain at the point of orgasm. Anne Carlisle, who cowrote the screenplay, plays a lesbian punk model and also male homosexual punk model (talk about range!). As a woman, Carlisle discovers a special sexual power. At orgasm she can make her lover disappear into thin air, courtesy of some low-tech special effects. A subplot involves Otto von Wernherr, a government scientist investigating the UFO on Carlisle’s roof. He holes up across the street in the apartment of a horny and hysterically funny socialite, Susan Doukas, whose very vocal expressions of frustration he balances with a great low-key performance. This offbeat film was directed by Slava Tsukerman, a classically trained Soviet-born filmmaker. His observations of modern America, as well as the beautiful New York City photography, should make for interesting viewing. LIQUID SKY has a cult following but has been difficult to see for the past several years. Here’s your first chance in 35 years to catch it on the big screen.
