BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Release: November 2, 2018
Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury’s lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that were always more like a family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.
BRIAN MAY (LEAD GUITARIST, QUEEN)
“I’m thrilled with the way our Freddie film is shaping up. Much more than a documentary of someone’s life, it’s a piece of pure art, chiselled out of solid rock. It speaks of families and relationships and hopes and dreams, and heartache and disappointment, and ultimately of victory and fulfilment, in a way that everyone can connect to. It hasn’t been an easy journey –  but all the most worthwhile journeys are like that! Rami and Lucy and the boys give monumental performances – more than worthy of the originals !!”

THE HATE U GIVE

FALL 2018

SYNOPSIS
Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.  Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right. THE HATE U GIVE is based on the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller by Angie Thomas and stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall, Common, Anthony Mackie and Issa Rae.
THE BOOK
Author Angie Thomas initially developed the project as a short story for her senior project in Belhaven University’s creative writing program. After graduation, she expanded it into a novel which led to 13 publishing houses bidding for the book.
The Hate U Give was published on February 28, 2017 and opened at number one on The New York Times young adult best-seller list. It is Thomas’ debut novel.
Critics widely praised the book. In The Globe and Mail, Shannon Ozirny wrote, “Ignore the YA label – this should be the one book everyone reads this year.”
While Katie Ward Beim-Esche of the Christian Science Monitor wrote, “Believe the hype: The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas’s extraordinary and fearless debut, really is that good.”
The book remains in the bestseller list and has won numerous awards including the William C. Morris Award, the Michael L. Printz Award, the Coretta Scott King Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
THE FILM
The film is directed by George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food, Men of Honor, Notorious) from a screenplay by Tina Mabry (Insecure, Queen Sugar, Mississippi Damned) and Audrey Wells (Under the Tuscan Sun).
It stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr Carter, with Regina Hall and Russell Hornsby as Starr’s parents Lisa and Maverick. Additional cast members include Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, Sabrina Carpenter, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common.
GEORGE TILLMAN, JR (DIRECTOR)
“For me, it all began in January 2016 when I got a call to read an unpublished book by a new author called Angie Thomas. I was finishing another project at the time on a snowy day in Brooklyn and was reluctant to give my attention to it, but something inside told me to take 30 minutes to read it. These 30 minutes changed my life.”
“I vividly remember the opening lines of the novel when the protagonist Starr Carter says: ‘I shouldn’t have come to this house party. I’m not even sure I belong at this party. That’s not on some bougie shit, either. There are just some places where it’s not enough to be me. Either versions of me.’ “
“That statement “it’s not enough to be me” really hit home. As an African-American who grew up in Milwaukee and moved to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking, I’ve always connected with that feeling of not thinking I’m enough. Struggling with the idea of trying to be two people. I think this is something a lot of individuals, but especially black people and other minorities in America can relate to. That one phrase instantly fostered a strong emotional connection within me, and I knew this was a story I had to tell.”
“This is a story about finding your voice. About family. About identity. I’ve been fueled by immense passion and purpose to bring the incredible story that Angie Thomas has created to the screen so the world can see not only this young woman’s struggle and pain but also the awakening and resilience that every human has.”
