DOLEMITE The Kung-fu Fighting Pimp Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah
“I wanna let you know that Dolemite is my name, and f***in’ up motherf***ers is my game!”
DOLEMITE screens Midnights this weekend (February 9th and 10th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.
DOLEMITE (1975) has everything: a gang of karate-fighting prostitutes, Dolemite punching his fist through Willie Green’s (director D’Urville Martin) stomach, high pumps and 100 gallon Dalmatian-print hats. Also, some of the best characters to ever grace a movie, such as the horny preacher, the hamburger pimp and, of course, “the one who no one knows until it’s time.”
Rudy Ray Moore, in a role that transcends Academy Awards, stars as Dolemite, the baddest cat in the universe. He gets out of prison and with his stable of karate chopping call girls, he is on his path to revenge and street justice. He clearly does not take any jive from no turkey and proves it with his powers of rapping, pimping, and kung-fu skills. DOLEMITE is blaxploitation at its absolute finest, a shining example of the genre with its low budget, continuity errors, and hatred for rat-soup eating honkey mother****ers. The true Godfather of Rap (not this newer nonsense), Moore, who lived here in St. Louis in the early ‘90s, is something of a juxtaposition of acting technique; somehow managing simultaneously to be the most charismatic and awful actor of the 1970’s, and that’s saying something. This one is HIGHLY recommended folks, if not for the one-liners alone. The action scenes are pretty poorly staged, but the characters’ dialogue when they’re talking trash more than makes up for it. It’s full of strange little details – like the fact that the Hamburger Pimp is wearing a Dolemite T-shirt inside out (was this intentional or did the guy just pick up whatever shirt was lying on the set and put it on?) that keep you coming back to watch it again and again. Don’t miss your chance to see it on the big screen this weekend at The Moolah!
