Written and directed by Chazelle, LA LA LAND (review) tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.
The Golden Globe for Best Drama went to director Barry Jenkins’ MOONLIGHT. A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, MOONLIGHT chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.
Casey Affleck won Best Actor for his work in Kenneth Lonergan’s MANCHESTER BY THE SEA.
After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.
Best Actress went to Isabelle Huppert for ELLE. Michèle seems indestructible. Head of a leading video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle’s life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game-a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control. The film, which also won Best Foreign Language, is directed by Paul Verhoeven.
In the supporting acting categories, Viola Davis won for her work in FENCES while Aaron Taylor-Johnson took home a Globe for NOCTURNAL ANIMALS.
The Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature was awarded to ZOOTOPIA.
First-time show host Jimmy Fallon led the star-studded event which aired on NBC live from The Beverly Hilton.
Meryl Streep was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. At the end of her acceptance speech, Streep said, “Once when I was standing around on the set one day, whining about something, you know, we were going to work through supper or the long hours or whatever, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, “Isn’t it such a privilege, Meryl, just to be an actor?” Yeah, it is, and we have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should all be very proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight. As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia said to me once, “Take your broken heart. Make it into art.” Thank you, friend.”
