Watch Viggo Mortensen In First CAPTAIN FANTASTIC Trailer
Bleecker St. Films has released the first trailer and poster for their upcoming gem of a film, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC.
The movie stars Viggo Mortensen, Frank Langella, George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso, Nicholas Hamilton, Shree Crooks, Charlie Shotwell, Ann Dowd, Erin Moriarty, Missi Pyle, with Kathryn Hahn and Steve Zahn.
Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society, a devoted father (Viggo Mortensen) dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults. But when a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent and brings into question everything he’s taught them.
In his Sundance 2016 review, Brian Moylan says the film is, “Gorgeously shot and peppered with genuine emotion, this is a great sophomore effort for writer/director Matt Ross, better known as an actor for his roles in Big Love, Silicon Valley and American Horror Story. Finely wrought and inventive, Captain Fantastic surely earns the lofty praise of its title.”
For Ross the story is an exploration of the choices that parents make for their children. “I’m fascinated by all the issues that revolve around parenting,” Ross says. “Ben has given up the outside world and whatever personal ambitions it held for him to devote his life to being the best father he thinks he can be. The question becomes: is he the best father in the world or the worst? Is what he’s doing insane or insanely great?”
Mortensen was intrigued by what he says is a unique screenplay about a remarkable family. “It’s not only intelligent, it’s also well-constructed and emotional,” the actor explains. “I laughed as much as I cried and I trust audiences will as well. We were true to the screenplay and tried to amplify all the positive aspects as we filmed. Hopefully it will make audiences question their assumptions.”
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC opens in theaters July 8.
